Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
And Deborah, a prophetess--A woman of extraordinary knowledge, wisdom, and piety, instructed in divine knowledge by the Spirit and accustomed to interpret His will; who acquired an extensive influence, and was held in universal respect, insomuch that she became the animating spirit of the government and discharged all the special duties of a judge, except that of military leader.
the wife of Lapidoth--rendered by some, "a woman of splendors." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Deborah, a prophetess - Her name, meaning a bee, is the same as that of Rebekah's nurse (marginal reference). The reason of her preeminence is added. She was "a woman, a prophetess," like Miriam Exo 15:20; Huldah Kg2 22:14, etc. In Jdg 4:6, Jdg 4:9,Jdg 4:14, we have examples of her prophetic powers, and in Judg. 5 a noble specimen of prophetic song. Though the other Judges are not called prophets, yet they all seem to have had direct communications from God, either of knowledge or power, or both (compare Jdg 3:10 note). |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
At that time the Israelites were judged by Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, who dwelt under the Deborah-palm between Ramah (er Rm: see at Jos 18:25) and Bethel (Beitin: see at Jos 7:2) in the tribe of Benjamin, upon the mountains of Ephraim. Deborah is called נמיאה אשּׁה on account of her prophetic gift, like Miriam in Exo 15:20, and Hulda the wife of Shallum in Kg2 22:14. This gift qualified her to judge the nation (the participle שׁפטה expresses the permanence of the act of judging), i.e., first of all to settle such disputes among the people themselves as the lower courts were unable to decide, and which ought therefore, according to Deu 17:8, to be referred to the supreme judge of the whole nation. The palm where she sat in judgment (cf. Psa 9:5) was called after her the Deborah-palm. The Israelites went up to her there to obtain justice. The expression "came up" is applied here, as in Deu 17:8, to the place of justice, as a spiritual height, independently of the fact that the place referred to here really stood upon an eminence. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
A prophetess - As there were men - prophets, so there were also women - prophetesses, as Miriam, Exo 15:20. Huldah, Kg2 22:14, and divers others; but the word prophets or prophetesses is ambiguous, sometimes being used of persons extraordinarily inspired by God, and endowed with the power of working miracles, and foretelling things to come; and sometimes of persons endowed with special gifts or graces, for the better understanding and discoursing about the word and mind of God. Of this sort were the sons of the prophets, or such as were bred in the schools of the prophets. who are often called prophets, as Sa1 10:5, Sa1 10:10. And because we read nothing of Deborah's miraculous actions, perhaps she was only a woman of eminent holiness, and knowledge of the holy scriptures, by which she was singularly qualified for judging the people according to the laws of God. Judged Israel - That is, determined causes and controversies arising among the Israelites, as is implied, Jdg 4:5. And this Jabin might suffer to be done, especially by a woman. Yet the frequent discharge of this part of the judge's office, whereby she gained great power and authority with the people, did notably (though not observed by the tyrant) prepare the way for her sliding into the other part of her office, which was to defend and rescue the people from their enemies. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Deborah, a prophetess - One on whom the Spirit of God descended, and who was the instrument of conveying to the Israelites the knowledge of the Divine will, in things sacred and civil.
She judged Israel - This is, I believe, the first instance of gynaecocrasy, or female government, on record. Deborah seems to have been supreme both in civil and religious affairs; and Lapidoth, her husband, appears to have had no hand in the government. But the original may as well be translated a woman of Lapidoth, as the wife of Lapidoth. |
10 And the Spirit [07307] of the LORD [03068] came upon him, and he judged [08199] Israel [03478], and went out [03318] to war [04421]: and the LORD [03068] delivered [05414] Chushanrishathaim [03573] king [04428] of Mesopotamia [0763] into his hand [03027]; and his hand [03027] prevailed [05810] against Chushanrishathaim [03573].
14 And Deborah [01683] said [0559] unto Barak [01301], Up [06965]; for this is the day [03117] in which the LORD [03068] hath delivered [05414] Sisera [05516] into thine hand [03027]: is not the LORD [03068] gone out [03318] before [06440] thee? So Barak [01301] went down [03381] from mount [02022] Tabor [08396], and ten [06235] thousand [0505] men [0376] after [0310] him.
9 And she said [0559], I will surely [01980] go [03212] with thee: notwithstanding [0657] the journey [01870] that thou takest [01980] shall not be for thine honour [08597]; for the LORD [03068] shall sell [04376] Sisera [05516] into the hand [03027] of a woman [0802]. And Deborah [01683] arose [06965], and went [03212] with Barak [01301] to Kedesh [06943].
6 And she sent [07971] and called [07121] Barak [01301] the son [01121] of Abinoam [042] out of Kedeshnaphtali [06943], and said [0559] unto him, Hath not the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] commanded [06680], saying, Go [03212] and draw [04900] toward mount [02022] Tabor [08396], and take [03947] with thee ten [06235] thousand [0505] men [0376] of the children [01121] of Naphtali [05321] and of the children [01121] of Zebulun [02074]?

8 If there arise a matter [01697] too hard [06381] for thee in judgment [04941], between blood [01818] and blood [01818], between plea [01779] and plea [01779], and between stroke [05061] and stroke [05061], being matters [01697] of controversy [07379] within thy gates [08179]: then shalt thou arise [06965], and get thee up [05927] into the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] shall choose [0977];
5 Thou hast rebuked [01605] the heathen [01471], thou hast destroyed [06] the wicked [07563], thou hast put out [04229] their name [08034] for ever [05769] and ever [05703].
8 If there arise a matter [01697] too hard [06381] for thee in judgment [04941], between blood [01818] and blood [01818], between plea [01779] and plea [01779], and between stroke [05061] and stroke [05061], being matters [01697] of controversy [07379] within thy gates [08179]: then shalt thou arise [06965], and get thee up [05927] into the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] shall choose [0977];
14 So Hilkiah [02518] the priest [03548], and Ahikam [0296], and Achbor [05907], and Shaphan [08227], and Asahiah [06222], went [03212] unto Huldah [02468] the prophetess [05031], the wife [0802] of Shallum [07967] the son [01121] of Tikvah [08616], the son [01121] of Harhas [02745], keeper [08104] of the wardrobe [0899]; (now she dwelt [03427] in Jerusalem [03389] in the college [04932];) and they communed [01696] with her.
20 And Miriam [04813] the prophetess [05031], the sister [0269] of Aaron [0175], took [03947] a timbrel [08596] in her hand [03027]; and all the women [0802] went out [03318] after [0310] her with timbrels [08596] and with dances [04246].
2 And Joshua [03091] sent [07971] men [0582] from Jericho [03405] to Ai [05857], which is beside [05973] Bethaven [01007], on the east side [06924] of Bethel [01008], and spake [0559] unto them, saying [0559], Go up [05927] and view [07270] the country [0776]. And the men [0582] went up [05927] and viewed [07270] Ai [05857].
25 Gibeon [01391], and Ramah [07414], and Beeroth [0881],
5 And she dwelt [03427] under the palm tree [08560] of Deborah [01683] between Ramah [07414] and Bethel [01008] in mount [02022] Ephraim [0669]: and the children [01121] of Israel [03478] came up [05927] to her for judgment [04941].
10 And when they came [0935] thither to the hill [01389], behold, a company [02256] of prophets [05030] met [07125] him; and the Spirit [07307] of God [0430] came [06743] upon him, and he prophesied [05012] among [08432] them.
5 After [0310] that thou shalt come [0935] to the hill [01389] of God [0430], where is the garrison [05333] of the Philistines [06430]: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither [0935] to the city [05892], that thou shalt meet [06293] a company [02256] of prophets [05030] coming down [03381] from the high place [01116] with a psaltery [05035], and a tabret [08596], and a pipe [02485], and a harp [03658], before [06440] them; and they shall prophesy [05012]:
