Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
that deceived--Greek, "that deceiveth."
lake of fire--his final doom: as "the bottomless pit" (Rev 20:1) was his temporary prison.
where--so Coptic. But A, B, Vulgate, and Syriac read, "where also."
the beast and the false prophet are-- (Rev 19:20).
day and night--figurative for without intermission (Rev 22:5), such as now is caused by night interposing between day and day. The same phrase is used of the external state of the blessed (Rev 4:8). As the bliss of these is eternal, so the woe of Satan and the lost must be. As the beast and the false prophet led the former conspiracy against Christ and His people, so Satan in person heads the last conspiracy. Satan shall not be permitted to enter this Paradise regained, to show the perfect security of believers, unlike the first Adam whom Satan succeeded in robbing of Paradise; and shall, like Pharaoh at the Rod Sea, receive in this last attempt his final doom.
for ever and ever--Greek, "to the ages of the ages." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And the devil that deceived them - See the notes on Rev 20:3, Rev 20:8.
Was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone - In Rev 19:20, it is said of the beast and the false prophet that they were "cast alive into a lake of fire, burning with brimstone." Satan, on the other hand, instead of being doomed at once to that final ruin, was confined for a season in a dark abyss, Rev 20:1-3. As the final punishment, however, he is appropriately represented as consigned to the same doom as the beast and the false prophet, that those great enemies of God, that had been associated and combined in deceiving the nations, might share the same appropriate punishment in the end. Compare Rev 16:13-14.
Where the beast and the false prophet are - See the notes on Rev 19:20.
And shall be tormented day and night forever - Compare the notes on Rev 14:11. All the great enemies of the church are destroyed, and henceforward there is to be no array of hostile forces; no combination of malignant powers against the kingdom of God. The gospel triumphs; the way is prepared for the final consummation.
Section d. - Condition of things in the period referred to in Rev 20:9-10;
(1) There will be, after the release of Satan, and of course at the close of the millennial period properly so called, a state of things which may be well represented by the invasion of a country by hostile, formidable forces. This, as shown in the exposition, need not be supposed to be literal; but it is implied that there will be decided hostility against the true religion. It may be an organization and consolidation, so to speak, of infidel principles, or a decided worldly spirit, or some prevalent form of error, or some new form of depravity that shall be developed by the circumstances of that age. What it will be it is impossible now to determine; but, as shown above (section c, (4)), it is by no means improbable that this will occur even at the close of the millennium.
(2) there will be a decided defeat of these forces thus combined, "as if" fire should come down from heaven to destroy an invading army. The "mode" in which this will be done is not indeed stated, for there is no necessity of understanding the statement in Rev 20:9 "literally," anymore than the other parts of the chapter. The fair inference, however, is that it will be by a manifest divine agency; that it will be sudden, and that the destruction will be entire. We have no reason, therefore, to suppose that the outbreak will be of long continuance, or that it will very materially disturb the settled order of human affairs on the earth - anymore than a formidable invasion of a country does, when the invading army is suddenly cut off by some terrible judgment from heaven.
(3) this overthrow of the enemies of God and of the church will be "final." Satan will be "cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, to be tormented day and night forever." The beast and the false prophet are already there Rev 19:20; that is, they will have ceased long since, even before the beginning of the millennial period (Rev 19:20, compared with Rev 20:1-3), to have opposed the progress of truth in the world, and their power will have been brought to an end. Satan now, the last enemy, will be doomed to the same hopeless woe; and all the enemies that have ever opposed the church - in all forms of paganism, Mohammedanism, Popery, and delusion - will be destroyed forever. The world then will have peace; the church will have rest; the great triumph will have been achieved.
(4) for reasons stated in the analysis of the chapter, 5. (c), it is possible that there will be a long period of continued prosperity and peace between the events stated in Rev 20:9-10, and the final judgment, as described in Rev 20:11-15. If so, however, the purpose of the book did not require that that should be described at length, and it must be admitted that the most "obvious" interpretation of the New Testament would not be favorable to such a supposition. Compare Luk 17:26-30; Luk 18:8; Th1 5:2, Th1 5:3; Pe2 3:3-4. The great glory of the world will be the millennial period; when religion shall have the ascendency and the race shall have reached its highest point of progress on earth, and the blessings of liberty, intelligence, peace, and piety, shall have during that period been spread over the globe. In that long duration, who can estimate the numbers that shah be redeemed and saved? That period passed, the great purpose contemplated by the creation of the earth - the glory of God in the redemption of a fallen race, and in setting up a kingdom of righteousness in a world of apostasy - will have been accomplished, and there will be no reason why the final judgment should not then occur. "The work of redemption will now be finished. The end for which the means of grace have been instituted shall be obtained. All the effect which was intended to be accomplished by them shall now be accomplished. All the great wheels of Providence have gone round all things are ripe for Christ's coming to judgment" (President Edwards' History of Redemption). |

devil
Satan, Summary:
This fearful being, apparently created one of the cherubim
(See Scofield) - (Eze 1:5).
(See Scofield) - (Eze 28:12).
and anointed for a position of great authority, perhaps over the primitive creation, (note 3);
(See Scofield) - (Gen 1:2); (Eze 28:11-15).
fell through pride; (Isa 14:12-14); His "I will" (Isa 14:13) marks the introduction of sin into the universe. Cast out of heaven, (Luk 10:18), he makes earth and air the scene of his tireless activity. (Eph 2:2); (Pe1 5:8). After the creation of man he entered into the serpent.
(See Scofield) - (Gen 3:1).
and, beguiling Eve by his subtilty, secured the downfall of Adam and through him of the race, and the entrance of sin into the world of men. (Rom 5:12-14).
The Adamic Covenant
(See Scofield) - (Gen 3:14).
Promised the ultimate destruction of Satan through the "Seed of the woman." Then began his long warfare against the work of God in behalf of humanity, which still continues. The present world-system (Rev 13:8) organized upon the principle of force, greed, selfishness, ambition, and sinful pleasure, is his work and was the bribe which he offered to Christ. (Mat 4:8); (Mat 4:9). Of that world-system, he is prince; (Joh 14:30); (Joh 16:11) and god (Co2 4:4). As "prince of the power of the air", (Eph 2:2), he is at the head of vast host of demons.
(See Scofield) - (Mat 7:22).
To him, under God, was committed upon earth the power of death. (Heb 2:14). Cast out of heaven as his proper sphere and "first estate," he still has access to God as the "accuser of the brethren" (Rev 12:10) and is permitted a certain power of sifting or testing the self-confident and carnal among believers; (Job 1:6-11); (Luk 22:31); (Luk 22:32); (Co1 5:5); (Ti1 1:20); but this is strictly permissive and limited power, and believers so sifted are kept in faith through the advocacy of Christ. (Luk 22:31); (Luk 22:32).
(See Scofield) - (Jo1 2:1).
At the beginning of the great tribulation, Satan's privilege of access to God as accuser will be withdrawn. (Rev 12:7-12). At the return of Christ in glory, Satan will be bound for one thousand years (Rev 20:2) after which he will be "loosed for a little season" (Rev 20:3); (Rev 20:7); (Rev 20:8) and will become the head of final effort to overthrow the kingdom. Defeated in this, he will be finally cast into the lake of fire, his final doom. The notion that he reigns in hell is Miltonic, not biblical. He is prince of this present world-system, but will be tormented in the lake of fire. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
And they - All these. Shall be tormented day and night - That is, without any intermission. Strictly speaking, there is only night there: no day, no sun, no hope! |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
And the devil - was cast onto the lake - Before Satan was bound, that is, his power was curtailed and restrained; now, he is cast into the lake of fire, his power being totally taken away. |
8 And [2532] the four [5064] beasts [2226] had [2192] each [303] [1520] of them [2596] [1438] six [1803] wings [4420] about [2943] him; and [2532] they were full [1073] of eyes [3788] within [2081]: and [2532] they rest [372] not [3756] [2192] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571], saying [3004], Holy [40], holy [40], holy [40], Lord [2962] God [2316] Almighty [3841], which [3588] was [2258] [3801], and [2532] is [5607] [3801], and [2532] is to come [2064] [3801].
5 And [2532] there shall be [2071] no [3756] night [3571] there [1563]; and [2532] they need [5532] no [3756] candle [3088] [2192], neither [2532] light [5457] of the sun [2246]; for [3754] the Lord [2962] God [2316] giveth [5461] them [846] light [5461]: and [2532] they shall reign [936] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
1 And [2532] I saw [1492] an angel [32] come down [2597] from [1537] heaven [3772], having [2192] the key [2807] of the bottomless pit [12] and [2532] a great [3173] chain [254] in [1909] his [846] hand [5495].
3 Knowing [1097] this [5124] first [4412], that [3754] there shall come [2064] in [1909] the last [2078] days [2250] scoffers [1703], walking [4198] after [2596] their [846] own [2398] lusts [1939],
4 And [2532] saying [3004], Where [4226] is [2076] the promise [1860] of his [846] coming [3952]? for [1063] since [575] [3739] the fathers [3962] fell asleep [2837], all things [3956] continue [3779] [1265] as they were from [575] the beginning [746] of the creation [2937].
3 For [1063] when [3752] they shall say [3004], Peace [1515] and [2532] safety [803]; then [5119] sudden [160] destruction [3639] cometh upon [2186] them [846], as [5618] travail [5604] upon [1722] a woman with child [1064] [2192]; and [2532] they shall [1628] not [3364] escape [1628].
2 For [1063] yourselves [846] know [1492] perfectly [199] that [3754] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] so [3779] cometh [2064] as [5613] a thief [2812] in [1722] the night [3571].
8 I tell [3004] you [5213] that [3754] he will [4160] avenge [1557] them [846] speedily [5034] [1722]. Nevertheless [4133] when [687] the Son [5207] of man [444] cometh [2064], shall he find [2147] faith [4102] on [1909] the earth [1093]?
26 And [2532] as [2531] it was [1096] in [1722] the days [2250] of Noe [3575], so [3779] shall it be [2071] also [2532] in [1722] the days [2250] of the Son [5207] of man [444].
27 They did eat [2068], they drank [4095], they married wives [1060], they were given in marriage [1547], until [891] the day [2250] that [3739] Noe [3575] entered [1525] into [1519] the ark [2787], and [2532] the flood [2627] came [2064], and [2532] destroyed [622] them all [537].
28 Likewise [3668] also [2532] as [5613] it was [1096] in [1722] the days [2250] of Lot [3091]; they did eat [2068], they drank [4095], they bought [59], they sold [4453], they planted [5452], they builded [3618];
29 But [3739] [1161] the same day [2250] that Lot [3091] went [1831] out of [575] Sodom [4670] it rained [1026] fire [4442] and [2532] brimstone [2303] from [575] heaven [3772], and [2532] destroyed [622] them all [537].
30 Even [2596] thus [5024] shall it be [2071] in the day [3739] [2250] when the Son [5207] of man [444] is revealed [601].
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] a great [3173] white [3022] throne [2362], and [2532] him that sat [2521] on [1909] it [846], from [575] whose [3739] face [4383] the earth [1093] and [2532] the heaven [3772] fled away [5343]; and [2532] there was found [2147] no [3756] place [5117] for them [846].
12 And [2532] I saw [1492] the dead [3498], small [3398] and [2532] great [3173], stand [2476] before [1799] God [2316]; and [2532] the books [975] were opened [455]: and [2532] another [243] book [975] was opened [455], which [3739] is [2076] the book of life [2222]: and [2532] the dead [3498] were judged [2919] out of [1537] those things which were written [1125] in [1722] the books [975], according to [2596] their [846] works [2041].
13 And [2532] the sea [2281] gave up [1325] the dead [3498] which [3588] were in [1722] it [846]; and [2532] death [2288] and [2532] hell [86] delivered up [1325] the dead [3498] which [3588] were in [1722] them [846]: and [2532] they were judged [2919] every man [1538] according to [2596] their [846] works [2041].
14 And [2532] death [2288] and [2532] hell [86] were cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442]. This [3778] is [2076] the second [1208] death [2288].
15 And [2532] whosoever [1536] was [2147] not [3756] found [2147] written [1125] in [1722] the book [976] of life [2222] was cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442].
9 And [2532] they went up [305] on [1909] the breadth [4114] of the earth [1093], and [2532] compassed [2944] the camp [3925] of the saints [40] about [2944], and [2532] the beloved [25] city [4172]: and [2532] fire [4442] came down [2597] from [575] God [2316] out of [1537] heaven [3772], and [2532] devoured [2719] them [846].
10 And [2532] the devil [1228] that deceived [4105] them [846] was cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442] and [2532] brimstone [2303], where [3699] the beast [2342] and [2532] the false prophet [5578] are, and [2532] shall be tormented [928] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
1 And [2532] I saw [1492] an angel [32] come down [2597] from [1537] heaven [3772], having [2192] the key [2807] of the bottomless pit [12] and [2532] a great [3173] chain [254] in [1909] his [846] hand [5495].
2 And [2532] he laid hold on [2902] the dragon [1404], that old [744] serpent [3789], which [3739] is [2076] the Devil [1228], and [2532] Satan [4567], and [2532] bound [1210] him [846] a thousand [5507] years [2094],
3 And [2532] cast [906] him [846] into [1519] the bottomless pit [12], and [2532] shut [2808] him [846] up [2808], and [2532] set a seal [4972] upon [1883] him [846], that [3363] he should deceive [4105] the nations [1484] no [3363] more [2089], till [891] the thousand [5507] years [2094] should be fulfilled [5055]: and [2532] after [3326] that [5023] he [846] must [1163] be loosed [3089] a little [3398] season [5550].
11 And [2532] the smoke [2586] of their [846] torment [929] ascendeth up [305] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165]: and [2532] they have [2192] no [3756] rest [372] day [2250] nor [2532] night [3571], who [3588] worship [4352] the beast [2342] and [2532] his [846] image [1504], and [2532] whosoever [1536] receiveth [2983] the mark [5480] of his [846] name [3686].
13 And [2532] I saw [1492] three [5140] unclean [169] spirits [4151] like [3664] frogs [944] come out of [1537] the mouth [4750] of the dragon [1404], and [2532] out of [1537] the mouth [4750] of the beast [2342], and [2532] out of [1537] the mouth [4750] of the false prophet [5578].
14 For [1063] they are [1526] the spirits [4151] of devils [1142], working [4160] miracles [4592], which go forth [1607] [3739] [1607] unto [1909] the kings [935] of the earth [1093] and [2532] of the whole [3650] world [3625], to gather [4863] them [846] to [1519] the battle [4171] of that [1565] great [3173] day [2250] of God [2316] Almighty [3841].
8 And [2532] shall go out [1831] to deceive [4105] the nations [1484] which [3588] are in [1722] the four [5064] quarters [1137] of the earth [1093], Gog [1136] and [2532] Magog [3098], to gather [4863] them [846] together [4863] to [1519] battle [4171]: the number [706] of whom [3739] is as [5613] the sand [285] of the sea [2281].
7 And [2532] when [3752] the thousand [5507] years [2094] are expired [5055], Satan [4567] shall be loosed [3089] out of [1537] his [846] prison [5438],
3 And [2532] cast [906] him [846] into [1519] the bottomless pit [12], and [2532] shut [2808] him [846] up [2808], and [2532] set a seal [4972] upon [1883] him [846], that [3363] he should deceive [4105] the nations [1484] no [3363] more [2089], till [891] the thousand [5507] years [2094] should be fulfilled [5055]: and [2532] after [3326] that [5023] he [846] must [1163] be loosed [3089] a little [3398] season [5550].
2 And [2532] he laid hold on [2902] the dragon [1404], that old [744] serpent [3789], which [3739] is [2076] the Devil [1228], and [2532] Satan [4567], and [2532] bound [1210] him [846] a thousand [5507] years [2094],
7 And [2532] there was [1096] war [4171] in [1722] heaven [3772]: Michael [3413] and [2532] his [846] angels [32] fought [4170] against [2596] the dragon [1404]; and [2532] the dragon [1404] fought [4170] and [2532] his [846] angels [32],
8 And [2532] prevailed [2480] not [3756]; neither [3777] was [2147] their [846] place [5117] found [2147] any more [2089] in [1722] heaven [3772].
9 And [2532] the great [3173] dragon [1404] was cast out [906], that old [744] serpent [3789], called [2564] the Devil [1228], and [2532] Satan [4567], which [3588] deceiveth [4105] the whole [3650] world [3625]: he was cast out [906] into [1519] the earth [1093], and [2532] his [846] angels [32] were cast out [906] with [3326] him [846].
10 And [2532] I heard [191] a loud [3173] voice [5456] saying [3004] in [1722] heaven [3772], Now [737] is come [1096] salvation [4991], and [2532] strength [1411], and [2532] the kingdom [932] of our [2257] God [2316], and [2532] the power [1849] of his [846] Christ [5547]: for [3754] the accuser [2723] of our [2257] brethren [80] is cast down [2598], which [3588] accused [2725] them [846] before [1799] our [2257] God [2316] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571].
11 And [2532] they [846] overcame [3528] him [846] by [1223] the blood [129] of the Lamb [721], and [2532] by [1223] the word [3056] of their [846] testimony [3141]; and [2532] they loved [25] not [3756] their [846] lives [5590] unto [891] the death [2288].
12 Therefore [1223] [5124] rejoice [2165], ye heavens [3772], and [2532] ye that dwell [4637] in [1722] them [846]. Woe [3759] to the inhabiters [2730] of the earth [1093] and [2532] of the sea [2281]! for [3754] the devil [1228] is come down [2597] unto [4314] you [5209], having [2192] great [3173] wrath [2372], because he knoweth [1492] that [3754] he hath [2192] but a short [3641] time [2540].
1 My [3450] little children [5040], these things [5023] write I [1125] unto you [5213], that [3363] ye sin [264] not [3363]. And [2532] if [1437] any man [5100] sin [264], we have [2192] an advocate [3875] with [4314] the Father [3962], Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] the righteous [1342]:
32 But [1161] I [1473] have prayed [1189] for [4012] thee [4675], that [3363] thy [4675] faith [4102] fail [1587] not [3363]: and [2532] when [4218] thou [4771] art converted [1994], strengthen [4741] thy [4675] brethren [80].
31 And [1161] the Lord [2962] said [2036], Simon [4613], Simon [4613], behold [2400], Satan [4567] hath desired [1809] to have you [5209], that he may sift [4617] you as [5613] wheat [4621]:
20 Of whom [3739] is [2076] Hymenaeus [5211] and [2532] Alexander [223]; whom [3739] I have delivered [3860] unto Satan [4567], that [2443] they may learn [3811] not [3361] to blaspheme [987].
5 To deliver [3860] such an one [5108] unto Satan [4567] for [1519] the destruction [3639] of the flesh [4561], that [2443] the spirit [4151] may be saved [4982] in [1722] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424].
6 Now there was a day [03117] when the sons [01121] of God [0430] came [0935] to present [03320] themselves before the LORD [03068], and Satan [07854] came [0935] also among [08432] them.
7 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Satan [07854], Whence [0370] comest [0935] thou? Then Satan [07854] answered [06030] the LORD [03068], and said [0559], From going to and fro [07751] in the earth [0776], and from walking up and down [01980] in it.
8 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Satan [07854], Hast thou considered [07760] [03820] my servant [05650] Job [0347], that there is none like him in the earth [0776], a perfect [08535] and an upright [03477] man [0376], one that feareth [03373] God [0430], and escheweth [05493] evil [07451]?
9 Then Satan [07854] answered [06030] the LORD [03068], and said [0559], Doth Job [0347] fear [03372] God [0430] for nought [02600]?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge [07753] about him, and about [01157] his house [01004], and about all that he hath on every side [05439]? thou hast blessed [01288] the work [04639] of his hands [03027], and his substance [04735] is increased [06555] in the land [0776].
11 But [0199] put forth [07971] thine hand [03027] now, and touch [05060] all that he hath, and he will curse [01288] [03808] thee to thy face [06440].
14 Forasmuch [1893] then [3767] as the children [3813] are partakers [2841] of flesh [4561] and [2532] blood [129], he [3348] also [2532] himself [846] likewise [3898] took part [3348] of the same [846]; that [2443] through [1223] death [2288] he might destroy [2673] him that had [2192] the power [2904] of death [2288], that is [5123], the devil [1228];
22 Many [4183] will say [2046] to me [3427] in [1722] that [1565] day [2250], Lord [2962], Lord [2962], have we [4395] not [3756] prophesied [4395] in thy [4674] name [3686]? and [2532] in thy [4674] name [3686] have cast out [1544] devils [1140]? and [2532] in thy [4674] name [3686] done [4160] many [4183] wonderful works [1411]?
2 Wherein [1722] [3739] in time past [4218] ye walked [4043] according to [2596] the course [165] of this [5127] world [2889], according to [2596] the prince [758] of the power [1849] of the air [109], the spirit [4151] that now [3568] worketh [1754] in [1722] the children [5207] of disobedience [543]:
4 In [1722] whom [3739] the god [2316] of this [5127] world [165] hath blinded [5186] the minds [3540] of them which believe not [571], lest [1519] [3361] the light [5462] of the glorious [1391] gospel [2098] of Christ [5547], who [3739] is [2076] the image [1504] of God [2316], should shine [826] unto them [846].
11 Of [4012] [1161] judgment [2920], because [3754] the prince [758] of this [5127] world [2889] is judged [2919].
30 Hereafter [3765] I will [2980] not [3765] talk [2980] much [4183] with [3326] you [5216]: for [1063] the prince [758] of this [5127] world [2889] cometh [2064], and [2532] hath [2192] [3756] nothing [3762] in [1722] me [1698].
9 And [2532] saith [3004] unto him [846], All [3956] these things [5023] will I give [1325] thee [4671], if [1437] thou wilt fall down [4098] and worship [4352] me [3427].
8 Again [3825], the devil [1228] taketh [3880] him [846] up [3880] into [1519] an exceeding [3029] high [5308] mountain [3735], and [2532] sheweth [1166] him [846] all [3956] the kingdoms [932] of the world [2889], and [2532] the glory [1391] of them [846];
8 And [2532] all [3956] that dwell [2730] upon [1909] the earth [1093] shall worship [4352] him [846], whose [3739] names [3686] are [1125] not [3756] written [1125] in [1722] the book [976] of life [2222] of the Lamb [721] slain [4969] from [575] the foundation [2602] of the world [2889].
14 And the LORD [03068] God [0430] said [0559] unto the serpent [05175], Because thou [0859] hast done [06213] this, thou art cursed [0779] above all cattle [0929], and above every beast [02416] of the field [07704]; upon thy belly [01512] shalt thou go [03212], and dust [06083] shalt thou eat [0398] all the days [03117] of thy life [02416]:
12 Wherefore [1223] [5124], as [5618] by [1223] one [1520] man [444] sin [266] entered [1525] into [1519] the world [2889], and [2532] death [2288] by [1223] sin [266]; and [2532] so [3779] death [2288] passed [1330] upon [1519] all [3956] men [444], for [1909] that [3739] all [3956] have sinned [264]:
13 (For [1063] until [891] the law [3551] sin [266] was [2258] in [1722] the world [2889]: but [1161] sin [266] is [1677] not [3756] imputed [1677] when there is [5607] no [3361] law [3551].
14 Nevertheless [235] death [2288] reigned [936] from [575] Adam [76] to [3360] Moses [3475], even [2532] over [1909] them that had [264] not [3361] sinned [264] after [1909] the similitude [3667] of Adam's [76] transgression [3847], who [3739] is [2076] the figure [5179] of him that was to come [3195].
1 Now the serpent [05175] was [01961] more subtil [06175] than any beast [02416] of the field [07704] which the LORD [03068] God [0430] had made [06213]. And he said [0559] unto the woman [0802], Yea [0637], hath God [0430] said [0559], Ye shall not eat [0398] of every tree [06086] of the garden [01588]?
8 Be sober [3525], be vigilant [1127]; because [3754] your [5216] adversary [476] the devil [1228], as [5613] a roaring [5612] lion [3023], walketh about [4043], seeking [2212] whom [5101] he may devour [2666]:
2 Wherein [1722] [3739] in time past [4218] ye walked [4043] according to [2596] the course [165] of this [5127] world [2889], according to [2596] the prince [758] of the power [1849] of the air [109], the spirit [4151] that now [3568] worketh [1754] in [1722] the children [5207] of disobedience [543]:
18 And [1161] he said [2036] unto them [846], I beheld [2334] Satan [4567] as [5613] lightning [796] fall [4098] from [1537] heaven [3772].
13 For thou hast said [0559] in thine heart [03824], I will ascend [05927] into heaven [08064], I will exalt [07311] my throne [03678] above [04605] the stars [03556] of God [0410]: I will sit [03427] also upon the mount [02022] of the congregation [04150], in the sides [03411] of the north [06828]:
12 How art thou fallen [05307] from heaven [08064], O Lucifer [01966], son [01121] of the morning [07837] [03213] ! how art thou cut down [01438] to the ground [0776], which didst weaken [02522] the nations [01471]!
14 I will ascend [05927] above the heights [01116] of the clouds [05645]; I will be like [01819] the most High [05945].
11 Moreover the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto me, saying [0559],
12 Son [01121] of man [0120], take up [05375] a lamentation [07015] upon the king [04428] of Tyrus [06865], and say [0559] unto him, Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Thou sealest up [02856] the sum [08508], full [04392] of wisdom [02451], and perfect [03632] in beauty [03308].
13 Thou hast been in Eden [05731] the garden [01588] of God [0430]; every precious [03368] stone [068] was thy covering [04540], the sardius [0124], topaz [06357], and the diamond [03095], the beryl [08658], the onyx [07718], and the jasper [03471], the sapphire [05601], the emerald [05306], and the carbuncle [01304], and gold [02091]: the workmanship [04399] of thy tabrets [08596] and of thy pipes [05345] was prepared [03559] in thee in the day [03117] that thou wast created [01254].
14 Thou art the anointed [04473] cherub [03742] that covereth [05526]; and I have set [05414] thee so: thou wast upon the holy [06944] mountain [02022] of God [0430]; thou hast walked up and down [01980] in the midst [08432] of the stones [068] of fire [0784].
15 Thou wast perfect [08549] in thy ways [01870] from the day [03117] that thou wast created [01254], till iniquity [05766] was found [04672] in thee.
2 And the earth [0776] was [01961] without form [08414], and void [0922]; and darkness [02822] was upon the face [06440] of the deep [08415]. And the Spirit [07307] of God [0430] moved [07363] upon [05921] the face [06440] of the waters [04325].
