again--Greek, "a second time."
rose up--Greek, "goeth up."
for ever and ever--Greek, "to the ages of the ages." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And again they said, Alleluia - See the notes on Rev 19:1. The event was so glorious and so important; the final destruction of the great enemy of the church was of so much moment in its bearing on the welfare of the world, as to call forth repeated expressions of praise.
And her smoke rose up forever and ever - See the notes on Rev 14:11. This is an image of final ruin; the image being derived probably from the description in Genesis of the smoke that ascended from the cities of the plain, Gen 19:28. On the joy expressed here in her destruction, compare the notes on Rev 18:20. |

Her smoke rose up - There was, and shall be, a continual evidence of God's judgments executed on this great whore or idolatrous city; nor shall it ever be restored. |

28 And he looked [08259] toward [06440] Sodom [05467] and Gomorrah [06017], and toward [06440] all the land [0776] of the plain [03603], and beheld [07200], and, lo, the smoke [07008] of the country [0776] went up [05927] as the smoke [07008] of a furnace [03536].
11 And [2532] the smoke [2586] of their [846] torment [929] ascendeth up [305] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165]: and [2532] they have [2192] no [3756] rest [372] day [2250] nor [2532] night [3571], who [3588] worship [4352] the beast [2342] and [2532] his [846] image [1504], and [2532] whosoever [1536] receiveth [2983] the mark [5480] of his [846] name [3686].
1 And [2532] after [3326] these things [5023] I heard [191] a great [3173] voice [5456] of much [4183] people [3793] in [1722] heaven [3772], saying [3004], Alleluia [239]; Salvation [4991], and [2532] glory [1391], and [2532] honour [5092], and [2532] power [1411], unto the Lord [2962] our [2257] God [2316]:
10 It shall not be quenched [03518] night [03915] nor day [03119]; the smoke [06227] thereof shall go up [05927] for ever [05769]: from generation [01755] to generation [01755] it shall lie waste [02717]; none shall pass through [05674] it for ever [05331] and ever [05331].
