And they answered [06030] Joshua [03091], and said [0559], Because it was certainly [05046] told [05046] thy servants [05650], how that the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] commanded [06680] his servant [05650] Moses [04872] to give [05414] you all the land [0776], and to destroy [08045] all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] from before [06440] you, therefore we were sore [03966] afraid [03372] of our lives [05315] because [06440] of you, and have done [06213] this thing [01697]. |

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. |
Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
It was mere fear which drove the Gibeonites to act as they did. They sought for union with God's people, not for its own sake, but to save their lives. Rahab's motives were higher (Jos 2:9 ff). Hence, she was adopted into Israel; the Gibeonites remained forever bondsmen of Israel. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The Gibeonites offered this excuse for their conduct, that having heard of the command of God which had been issued through Moses, that all the Canaanites were to be destroyed (Deu 7:1; Deu 20:16-17), they had feared greatly for their lives, and readily submitted to the resolution which Joshua made known to them. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
We were sore afraid of our lives - Self-preservation, which is the most powerful law of nature, dictated to them those measures which they adopted; and they plead this as the motive of their conduct. |
9 And she said [0559] unto the men [0582], I know [03045] that the LORD [03068] hath given [05414] you the land [0776], and that your terror [0367] is fallen [05307] upon us, and that all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] faint [04127] because [06440] of you.
16 But of the cities [05892] of these people [05971], which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] doth give [05414] thee for an inheritance [05159], thou shalt save alive [02421] nothing that breatheth [05397]:
17 But thou shalt utterly [02763] destroy [02763] them; namely, the Hittites [02850], and the Amorites [0567], the Canaanites [03669], and the Perizzites [06522], the Hivites [02340], and the Jebusites [02983]; as the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath commanded [06680] thee:
1 When the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] shall bring [0935] thee into the land [0776] whither thou goest [0935] to possess [03423] it, and hath cast out [05394] many [07227] nations [01471] before [06440] thee, the Hittites [02850], and the Girgashites [01622], and the Amorites [0567], and the Canaanites [03669], and the Perizzites [06522], and the Hivites [02340], and the Jebusites [02983], seven [07651] nations [01471] greater [07227] and mightier [06099] than thou;
