In Jos 11:21, Jos 11:22, the destruction of the Anakites upon the mountains of Judah and Israel is introduced in a supplementary form, which completes the history of the subjugation and extermination of the Canaanites in the south of the land (Josh 10). This supplement is not to be regarded either as a fragment interpolated by a different hand, or as a passage borrowed from another source. On the contrary, the author himself thought it necessary, having special regard to Num 13:28, Num 13:31., to mention expressly that Joshua also rooted out from their settlements the sons of Anak, whom the spies in the time of Moses had described as terrible giants, and drove them into the Philistine cities of Gaza, Bath, and Ashdod. "At that time" points back to the "long time," mentioned in Jos 11:18, during which Joshua was making war upon the Canaanites. The words "cut off," etc., are explained correctly by Clericus: "Those who fell into his hands he slew, the rest he put to flight, though, as we learn from Jos 15:14, they afterwards returned." (On the Anakim, see at Num 13:22.) They had their principal settlement upon the mountains in Hebron (el Khulil, see Jos 10:3), Debir (see at Jos 10:38), and Anab. The last place (Anab), upon the mountains of Judah (Jos 15:50), has been preserved along with the old name in the village of Anb, four or five hours to the south of Hebron, on the eastern side of the great Wady el Khulil, which runs from Hebron down to Beersheba (Rob. Pal. ii. p. 193). "And from all (the rest of) the mountains of Judah, and all the mountains of Israel:" the latter are called the mountains of Ephraim in Jos 17:15. The two together form the real basis of the land of Canaan, and are separated from one another by the large Wady Beit Hanina (see Rob. Pal. ii. p. 333). They received their respective names from the fact that the southern portion of the mountain land of Canaan fell to the tribe of Judah as its inheritance, and the northern part to the tribe of Ephraim and other tribes of Israel. (Note: The distinction here made may be explained without difficulty even from the circumstances of Joshua's own time. Judah and the double tribe of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) received their inheritance by lot before any of the others. But whilst the tribe of Judah proceeded into the territory allotted to them in the south, all the other tribes still remained in Gilgal; and even at a later period, when Ephraim and Manasseh were in their possessions, all Israel, with the exception of Judah, were still encamped at Shiloh. Moreover, the two parts of the nation were now separated by the territory which was afterwards assigned to the tribe of Benjamin, but had no owner at this time; and in addition to this, the altar, tabernacle, and ark of the covenant were in the midst of Joseph and the other tribes that were still assembled at Shiloh. Under such circumstances, then, would not the idea of a distinction between Judah, on the one hand, and the rest of Israel, in which the double tribe of Joseph and then the single tribe of Ephraim acquired such peculiar prominence, on the other, shape itself more and more in the mind, and what already existed in the germ begin to attain maturity even here? And what could be more natural than that the mountains in which the "children of Judah" had their settlements should be called the mountains of Judah; and the mountains where all the rest of Israel was encamped, where the "children of Israel" were gathered together, be called the mountains of Israel, and, as that particular district really belonged to the tribe of Ephraim, the mountains of Ephraim also? (Jos 19:50; Jos 20:7; also Jos 24:30.)) Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod were towns of the Philistines; of these Gaza and Ashdod were allotted to the tribe of Judah (Jos 15:47), but were never taken possession of by the Israelites, although the Philistines were sometimes subject to the Israelites (see at Jos 13:3). - With Jos 11:23, "thus Joshua took the whole land" etc., the history of the conquest of Canaan by Joshua is brought to a close; and Jos 11:23, "and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel," forms a kind of introduction to the second part of the book. The list of the conquered kings in Josh 12 is simply an appendix to the first part. The taking of the whole land does not imply that all the towns and villages to the very last had been conquered, or that all the Canaanites were rooted out from every corner of the land, but simply that the conquest was of such a character that the power of the Canaanites was broken, their dominion overthrown, and their whole land so thoroughly given into the hands of the Israelites, that those who still remained here and there were crushed into powerless fugitives, who could neither offer any further opposition to the Israelites, nor dispute the possession of the land with them, if they would only strive to fulfil the commandments of their God and persevere in the gradual extermination of the scattered remnants. Moreover, Israel had received the strongest pledge, in the powerful help which it had received from the Lord in the conquests thus far obtained, that the faithful covenant God would continue His help in the conflicts which still remained, and secure for it a complete victory and the full possession of the promised land. Looking, therefore, at the existing state of things from this point of view, Joshua had taken possession of the whole land, and could now proceed to finish the work entrusted to him by the Lord, by dividing the land among the tribes of Israel. Joshua had really done all that the Lord had said to Moses. For the Lord had not only promised to Moses the complete extermination of the Canaanites, but had also told him that He would not drive out the Canaanites at once, or "in one year," but only little by little, until Israel multiplied and took the land (Exo 23:28-30; cf. Deu 7:22). Looking at this promised, therefore, the author of the book could say with perfect justice, that "Joshua took the whole land according to all that (precisely in the manner in which) the Lord had said to Moses." But this did not preclude the fact, that a great deal still remained to be done before all the Canaanites could be utterly exterminated from every part of the land. Consequently, the enumeration of towns and districts that were not yet conquered, and of Canaanites who still remained, which we find in Jos 13:1-6; Jos 17:14., Jos 18:3; Jos 23:5, Jos 23:12, forms no discrepancy with the statements in the verses before us, so as to warrant us in adopting any critical hypotheses or conclusions as to the composition of the book by different authors. The Israelites could easily have taken such portions of the land as were still unconquered, and could have exterminated all the Canaanites who remained, without any severe or wearisome conflicts; if they had but persevered in fidelity to their God and in the fulfilment of His commandments. If, therefore, the complete conquest of the whole land was not secured in the next few years, but, on the contrary, the Canaanites repeatedly gained the upper hand over the Israelites; we must seek for the explanation, not in the fact that Joshua had not completely taken and conquered the land, but simply in the fact that the Lord had withdrawn His help from His people because of their apostasy from Him, and had given them up to the power of their enemies to chastise them for their sins. - The distribution of the land for an inheritance to the Israelites took place "according to their divisions by their tribes." מחלקות denote the division of the twelve tribes of Israel into families, fathers' houses, and households; and is so used not only here, but in Jos 12:7 and Jos 18:10. Compare with this Ch1 23:6; Ch1 24:1, etc., where it is applied to the different orders of priests and Levites. "And the land rested from war:" i.e., the war was ended, so that the peaceable task of distributing the land by lot could now be proceeded with (vid., Jos 14:15; Jdg 3:11, Jdg 3:30; Jdg 5:31).

At that time - In that war, but in divers years. The mountain - Or, mountains, the singular number for the plural; these barbarous and monstrous persons either chose to live in the dens or caves, which were frequent in the mountains of those parts, or else they were driven thither by the arms and success of the Israelites. From Debir - From the territories belonging to these cities, as we have often seen in this history, cities mentioned for the country subject to them. The mountains of Israel - It doth not follow from hence, that this book was written by some other person long after Joshua's death, even after the division of the Israelites into two kingdoms. of Israel and Judah; but only that this was one of those clauses which were added by Ezra or some other prophet; though that be not necessary: for since it was evident to Joshua, from Gen 49:10, &c. that the tribe of Judah was to be the chief of all these tribes, and some dawnings of its eminency appeared in that time, in their having the first lot in the land of Canaan, Jos 15:1, and the largest inheritance, Jos 19:9, it is no wonder that it is mentioned apart, and distinguished from the rest of the tribes of Israel, though that also be one of them. But how could Joshua utterly destroy these, when Caleb and Othniel destroyed some of them after Joshua's death? Jos 14:12; Jdg 1:10-12. This might be, either Because these places being in part destroyed and neglected by the Israelites, were repossessed by the giants, and by them kept 'till Caleb destroyed them. Or rather Because this work, though done by the particular valour of Caleb, is ascribed to Joshua as the general of the army, according to the manner of all historians; and therefore it is here attributed to Joshua, though afterwards, that Caleb might not lose his deserved honour, the history is more particularly described, and Caleb owned as the great instrument of it, Jos 14:6-15 and Jdg 1:12-20.

Cut off the Anakims - from Hebron, from Debir - This is evidently a recapitulation of the military operations detailed Jos 10:36-41. Destroyed - their cities - That is, those of the Anakims; for from Jos 11:13 we learn that Joshua preserved certain other cities.

⁵⁰ According to the word [06310] of the LORD [03068] they gave [05414] him the city [05892] which he asked [07592], even Timnathserah [08556] in mount [02022] Ephraim [0669]: and he built [01129] the city [05892], and dwelt [03427] therein.

¹⁵ And Joshua [03091] answered [0559] them, If thou be a great [07227] people [05971], then get thee up [05927] to the wood [03293] country, and cut down [01254] for thyself there in the land [0776] of the Perizzites [06522] and of the giants [07497], if mount [02022] Ephraim [0669] be too narrow [0213] for thee.

⁵⁰ And Anab [06024], and Eshtemoh [0851], and Anim [06044],

³⁸ And Joshua [03091] returned [07725], and all Israel [03478] with him, to Debir [01688]; and fought [03898] against it:

¹⁴ And Caleb [03612] drove [03423] thence the three [07969] sons [01121] of Anak [06061], Sheshai [08344], and Ahiman [0289], and Talmai [08526], the children [03211] of Anak [06061].

¹⁸ Joshua [03091] made [06213] war [04421] a long [07227] time [03117] with all those kings [04428].

³¹ But the men [0582] that went up [05927] with him said [0559], We be not able [03201] to go up [05927] against the people [05971]; for they are stronger [02389] than we.

²⁸ Nevertheless [0657] the people [05971] be strong [05794] that dwell [03427] in the land [0776], and the cities [05892] are walled [01219], and very [03966] great [01419]: and moreover we saw [07200] the children [03211] of Anak [06061] there.

²² There was none of the Anakims [06062] left [03498] in the land [0776] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478]: only in Gaza [05804], in Gath [01661], and in Ashdod [0795], there remained [07604].

²¹ And at that time [06256] came [0935] Joshua [03091], and cut off [03772] the Anakims [06062] from the mountains [02022], from Hebron [02275], from Debir [01688], from Anab [06024], and from all the mountains [02022] of Judah [03063], and from all the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478]: Joshua [03091] destroyed them utterly [02763] with their cities [05892].

¹² And Caleb [03612] said [0559], He that smiteth [05221] Kirjathsepher [07158], and taketh [03920] it, to him will I give [05414] Achsah [05915] my daughter [01323] to wife [0802].
¹³ And Othniel [06274] the son [01121] of Kenaz [07073], Caleb's [03612] younger [06996] brother [0251], took [03920] it: and he gave [05414] him Achsah [05915] his daughter [01323] to wife [0802].
¹⁴ And it came to pass, when she came [0935] to him, that she moved [05496] him to ask [07592] of her father [01] a field [07704]: and she lighted [06795] from off her ass [02543]; and Caleb [03612] said [0559] unto her, What wilt thou?
¹⁵ And she said [0559] unto him, Give [03051] me a blessing [01293]: for thou hast given [05414] me a south [05045] land [0776]; give [05414] me also springs [01543] of water [04325]. And Caleb [03612] gave [05414] her the upper [05942] springs [01543] and the nether [08482] springs [01543].
¹⁶ And the children [01121] of the Kenite [07017], Moses [04872]' father in law [02859], went up [05927] out of the city [05892] of palm trees [08558] [05899] with the children [01121] of Judah [03063] into the wilderness [04057] of Judah [03063], which lieth in the south [05045] of Arad [06166]; and they went [03212] and dwelt [03427] among [0854] the people [05971].
¹⁷ And Judah [03063] went [03212] with Simeon [08095] his brother [0251], and they slew [05221] the Canaanites [03669] that inhabited [03427] Zephath [06857], and utterly destroyed [02763] it. And the name [08034] of the city [05892] was called [07121] Hormah [02767].
¹⁸ Also Judah [03063] took [03920] Gaza [05804] with the coast [01366] thereof, and Askelon [0831] with the coast [01366] thereof, and Ekron [06138] with the coast [01366] thereof.
¹⁹ And the LORD [03068] was with Judah [03063]; and he drave out [03423] the inhabitants of the mountain [02022]; but could not [03808] drive out [03423] the inhabitants [03427] of the valley [06010], because they had chariots [07393] of iron [01270].
²⁰ And they gave [05414] Hebron [02275] unto Caleb [03612], as Moses [04872] said [01696]: and he expelled [03423] thence the three [07969] sons [01121] of Anak [06061].

⁶ Then the children [01121] of Judah [03063] came [05066] unto Joshua [03091] in Gilgal [01537]: and Caleb [03612] the son [01121] of Jephunneh [03312] the Kenezite [07074] said [0559] unto him, Thou knowest [03045] the thing [01697] that the LORD [03068] said [01696] unto Moses [04872] the man [0376] of God [0430] concerning me [0182] and thee [0182] in Kadeshbarnea [06947].
⁷ Forty [0705] years [08141] old [01121] was I when Moses [04872] the servant [05650] of the LORD [03068] sent [07971] me from Kadeshbarnea [06947] to espy out [07270] the land [0776]; and I brought [07725] him word [01697] again [07725] as it was in mine heart [03824].
⁸ Nevertheless my brethren [0251] that went up [05927] with me made the heart [03820] of the people [05971] melt [04529]: but I wholly [04390] followed [0310] the LORD [03068] my God [0430].
⁹ And Moses [04872] sware [07650] on that day [03117], saying [0559], Surely the land [0776] whereon thy feet [07272] have trodden [01869] shall be thine inheritance [05159], and thy children's [01121] for [05704] ever [05769], because thou hast wholly [04390] followed [0310] the LORD [03068] my God [0430].
¹⁰ And now, behold, the LORD [03068] hath kept me alive [02421], as he said [01696], these forty [0705] and five [02568] years [08141], even since [0227] the LORD [03068] spake [01696] this word [01697] unto Moses [04872], while the children of Israel [03478] wandered [01980] in the wilderness [04057]: and now, lo, I am this day [03117] fourscore [08084] and five [02568] years [08141] old [01121].
¹¹ As yet I am as strong [02389] this day [03117] as I was in the day [03117] that Moses [04872] sent [07971] me: as my strength [03581] was then, even so is my strength [03581] now, for war [04421], both to go out [03318], and to come in [0935].
¹² Now therefore give [05414] me this mountain [02022], whereof the LORD [03068] spake [01696] in that day [03117]; for thou heardest [08085] in that day [03117] how the Anakims [06062] were there, and that the cities [05892] were great [01419] and fenced [01219]: if so be [0194] the LORD [03068] will be with [0854] me, then I shall be able to drive them out [03423], as the LORD [03068] said [01696].
¹³ And Joshua [03091] blessed [01288] him, and gave [05414] unto Caleb [03612] the son [01121] of Jephunneh [03312] Hebron [02275] for an inheritance [05159].
¹⁴ Hebron [02275] therefore became the inheritance [05159] of Caleb [03612] the son [01121] of Jephunneh [03312] the Kenezite [07074] unto this day [03117], because that he wholly [04390] followed [0310] the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478].
¹⁵ And the name [08034] of Hebron [02275] before [06440] was Kirjatharba [07153]; which Arba was a great [01419] man [0120] among the Anakims [06062]. And the land [0776] had rest [08252] from war [04421].

¹⁰ And Judah [03063] went [03212] against the Canaanites [03669] that dwelt [03427] in Hebron [02275]: (now the name [08034] of Hebron [02275] before [06440] was Kirjatharba [07153]:) and they slew [05221] Sheshai [08344], and Ahiman [0289], and Talmai [08526].
¹¹ And from thence he went [03212] against the inhabitants [03427] of Debir [01688]: and the name [08034] of Debir [01688] before [06440] was Kirjathsepher [07158]:
¹² And Caleb [03612] said [0559], He that smiteth [05221] Kirjathsepher [07158], and taketh [03920] it, to him will I give [05414] Achsah [05915] my daughter [01323] to wife [0802].

¹² Now therefore give [05414] me this mountain [02022], whereof the LORD [03068] spake [01696] in that day [03117]; for thou heardest [08085] in that day [03117] how the Anakims [06062] were there, and that the cities [05892] were great [01419] and fenced [01219]: if so be [0194] the LORD [03068] will be with [0854] me, then I shall be able to drive them out [03423], as the LORD [03068] said [01696].

⁹ Out of the portion [02256] of the children [01121] of Judah [03063] was the inheritance [05159] of the children [01121] of Simeon [08095]: for the part [02506] of the children [01121] of Judah [03063] was too much [07227] for them: therefore the children [01121] of Simeon [08095] had their inheritance [05157] within [08432] the inheritance [05159] of them.

¹ This then was the lot [01486] of the tribe [04294] of the children [01121] of Judah [03063] by their families [04940]; even to the border [01366] of Edom [0123] the wilderness [04057] of Zin [06790] southward [05045] was the uttermost part [07097] of the south coast [08486].

¹⁰ The sceptre [07626] shall not depart [05493] from Judah [03063], nor a lawgiver [02710] from between his feet [07272], until [03588] Shiloh [07886] come [0935]; and unto him shall the gathering [03349] of the people [05971] be.

¹³ But as for the cities [05892] that stood [05975] still in their strength [08510], Israel [03478] burned [08313] none of them, save [02108] Hazor [02674] only; that did Joshua [03091] burn [08313].

³⁶ And Joshua [03091] went up [05927] from Eglon [05700], and all Israel [03478] with him, unto Hebron [02275]; and they fought [03898] against it:
³⁷ And they took [03920] it, and smote [05221] it with the edge [06310] of the sword [02719], and the king [04428] thereof, and all the cities [05892] thereof, and all the souls [05315] that were therein; he left [07604] none remaining [08300], according to all that he had done [06213] to Eglon [05700]; but destroyed [02763] it utterly, and all the souls [05315] that were therein.
³⁸ And Joshua [03091] returned [07725], and all Israel [03478] with him, to Debir [01688]; and fought [03898] against it:
³⁹ And he took [03920] it, and the king [04428] thereof, and all the cities [05892] thereof; and they smote [05221] them with the edge [06310] of the sword [02719], and utterly destroyed [02763] all the souls [05315] that were therein; he left [07604] none remaining [08300]: as he had done [06213] to Hebron [02275], so he did [06213] to Debir [01688], and to the king [04428] thereof; as he had done [06213] also to Libnah [03841], and to her king [04428].
⁴⁰ So Joshua [03091] smote [05221] all the country [0776] of the hills [02022], and of the south [05045], and of the vale [08219], and of the springs [0794], and all their kings [04428]: he left [07604] none remaining [08300], but utterly destroyed [02763] all that breathed [05397], as the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] commanded [06680].
⁴¹ And Joshua [03091] smote [05221] them from Kadeshbarnea [06947] even unto Gaza [05804], and all the country [0776] of Goshen [01657], even unto Gibeon [01391].
