Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
THE SIN OF RESPECT OF PERSONS: DEAD, UNWORKING FAITH SAVES NO MAN. (Jam. 2:1-26)
brethren--The equality of all Christians as "brethren," forms the groundwork of the admonition.
the faith of . . . Christ--that is, the Christian faith. James grounds Christian practice on Christian faith.
the Lord of glory--So Co1 2:8. As all believers, alike rich and poor, derive all their glory from their union with Him, "the Lord of glory," not from external advantages of worldly fortune, the sin in question is peculiarly inconsistent with His "faith." BENGEL, making no ellipsis of "the Lord," explains "glory" as in apposition with Christ who is THE GLORY (Luk 2:32); the true Shekinah glory of the temple (Rom 9:4). English Version is simpler. The glory of Christ resting on the poor believer should make him be regarded as highly by "brethren" as his richer brother; nay, more so, if the poor believer has more of Christ's spirit than the rich brother.
with respect of persons--literally, "in respectings of persons"; "in" the practice of partial preferences of persons in various ways and on various occasions. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
My brethren - Perhaps meaning brethren in two respects - as Jews, and as Christians. In both respects the form of address would be proper.
Have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ - Faith is the distinguishing thing in the Christian religion, for it is this by which man is justified, and hence, it comes to be put for religion itself. Notes, Ti1 3:9. The meaning here is, "do not hold such views of the religion of Christ, as to lead you to manifest partiality to others on account of their difference of rank or outward circumstances."
The Lord of glory - The glorious Lord; he who is glorious himself, and who is encompassed with glory. See the notes at Co1 2:8. The design here seems to be to show that the religion of such a Lord should be in no way dishonored.
With respect of persons - That is, you are not to show respect of persons, or to evince partiality to others on account of their rank, wealth, apparel, etc. Compare Pro 24:23; Pro 28:21; Lev 19:15; Deu 1:17; Deu 10:17; Ch2 19:7; Psa 40:4. See the subject explained in the Act 10:34 note; Rom 2:11 note. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
the Lord of glory
The Glory, that is, in the sense of (Heb 1:3) as taking the place of the shekinah.
with respect
In the presence of Christ the Glory, earthly distinctions disappear. |
Vincent's Word Studies, by Marvin R. Vincent [1886] |
Have (ἔχετε)
Rev., hold, not in the sense of hold fast, cleave to, but of possessing, occupying, and practising, as a matter of habit. Thus we say that a man holds his property by a certain tenure. A rented estate is a holding. So of an opinion, or set of opinions, with which one is publicly identified. We say that he holds thus and so.
With respect of persons (ἐν προσωπολημψίαις)
From πρόσωπον, the countenance, and λαμβάνω, to receive. To receive the countenance is a Hebrew phrase. Thus Leviticus 19:15 (Sept.): Οὐ λήψῃ προσωπον πτωχοῦ: Thou shalt not respect the person (receive the countenance) of the poor. Compare Luk 20:21; Rom 2:11; and Jde 1:16.
The Lord of glory
Compare Co1 2:8; Act 7:2; Eph 1:17. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
My brethren - The equality of Christians, intimated by this name, is the ground of the admonition. Hold not the faith of our common Lord, the Lord of glory - Of which glory all who believe in him partake. With respect of persons - That is, honour none merely for being rich; despise none merely for being poor. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
My brethren, have not - This verse should be read interrogatively: My brethren, do ye not make profession of the faith or religion of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with acceptance of persons? That is, preferring the rich to the poor merely because of their riches, and not on account of any moral excellence, personal piety, or public usefulness. Πιστις, faith, is put here for religion; and της δοξης, of glory, should, according to some critics, be construed with it as the Syriac and Coptic have done. Some connect it with our Lord Jesus Christ - the religion of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. Others translate thus, the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus. There are many various readings in the MSS. and versions on this verse: the meaning is clear enough, though the connection be rather obscure. |
4 Who [3748] are [1526] Israelites [2475]; to whom [3739] pertaineth the adoption [5206], and [2532] the glory [1391], and [2532] the covenants [1242], and [2532] the giving of the law [3548], and [2532] the service [2999] of God, and [2532] the promises [1860];
32 A light [5457] to [1519] lighten [602] the Gentiles [1484], and [2532] the glory [1391] of thy [4675] people [2992] Israel [2474].
8 Which [3739] none [3762] of the princes [758] of this [5127] world [165] knew [1097]: for [1487] [1063] had they known [1097] it, they [302] would [4717] not [3756] have crucified [4717] the Lord [2962] of glory [1391].
11 For [1063] there is [2076] no [3756] respect of persons [4382] with [3844] God [2316].
34 Then [1161] Peter [4074] opened [455] his mouth [4750], and said [2036], Of [1909] a truth [225] I perceive [2638] that [3754] God [2316] is [2076] no [3756] respecter of persons [4381]:
4 Blessed [0835] is that man [01397] that maketh [07760] the LORD [03068] his trust [04009], and respecteth [06437] not the proud [07295], nor such as turn aside [07750] to lies [03577].
7 Wherefore now let the fear [06343] of the LORD [03068] be upon you; take heed [08104] and do [06213] it: for there is no iniquity [05766] with the LORD [03068] our God [0430], nor respect [04856] of persons [06440], nor taking [04727] of gifts [07810].
17 For the LORD [03068] your God [0430] is God [0430] of gods [0430], and Lord [0113] of lords [0113], a great [01419] God [0410], a mighty [01368], and a terrible [03372], which regardeth [05375] not persons [06440], nor taketh [03947] reward [07810]:
17 Ye shall not respect [05234] persons [06440] in judgment [04941]; but ye shall hear [08085] the small [06996] as well as the great [01419]; ye shall not be afraid [01481] of the face [06440] of man [0376]; for the judgment [04941] is God's [0430]: and the cause [01697] that is too hard [07185] for you, bring [07126] it unto me, and I will hear [08085] it.
15 Ye shall do [06213] no unrighteousness [05766] in judgment [04941]: thou shalt not respect [05375] the person [06440] of the poor [01800], nor honour [01921] the person [06440] of the mighty [01419]: but in righteousness [06664] shalt thou judge [08199] thy neighbour [05997].
21 To have respect [05234] of persons [06440] is not good [02896]: for for a piece [06595] of bread [03899] that man [01397] will transgress [06586].
23 These things also belong to the wise [02450]. It is not good [02896] to have respect [05234] of persons [06440] in judgment [04941].
8 Which [3739] none [3762] of the princes [758] of this [5127] world [165] knew [1097]: for [1487] [1063] had they known [1097] it, they [302] would [4717] not [3756] have crucified [4717] the Lord [2962] of glory [1391].
9 Holding [2192] the mystery [3466] of the faith [4102] in [1722] a pure [2513] conscience [4893].
3 Who [3739] being [5607] the brightness [541] of his glory [1391], and [2532] the express image [5481] of his [846] person [5287], and [5037] upholding [5342] all things [3956] by the word [4487] of his [846] power [1411], when he had [4160] [2512] by [1223] himself [1438] purged [4160] [2512] our [2257] sins [266], sat down [2523] on [1722] the right hand [1188] of the Majesty [3172] on [1722] high [5308];
17 That [2443] the God [2316] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], the Father [3962] of glory [1391], may give [1325] unto you [5213] the spirit [4151] of wisdom [4678] and [2532] revelation [602] in [1722] the knowledge [1922] of him [846]:
2 And [1161] he said [5346], Men [435], brethren [80], and [2532] fathers [3962], hearken [191]; The God [2316] of glory [1391] appeared [3700] unto our [2257] father [3962] Abraham [11], when he was [5607] in [1722] Mesopotamia [3318], before [4250] [2228] he [846] dwelt [2730] in [1722] Charran [5488],
8 Which [3739] none [3762] of the princes [758] of this [5127] world [165] knew [1097]: for [1487] [1063] had they known [1097] it, they [302] would [4717] not [3756] have crucified [4717] the Lord [2962] of glory [1391].
16 These [3778] are [1526] murmurers [1113], complainers [3202], walking [4198] after [2596] their own [846] lusts [1939]; and [2532] their [846] mouth [4750] speaketh [2980] great swelling [5246] words, having men's persons [4383] in admiration [2296] because [5484] of advantage [5622].
11 For [1063] there is [2076] no [3756] respect of persons [4382] with [3844] God [2316].
21 And [2532] they asked [1905] him [846], saying [3004], Master [1320], we know [1492] that [3754] thou sayest [3004] and [2532] teachest [1321] rightly [3723], [2532] neither [3756] acceptest thou [2983] the person [4383] of any, but [235] teachest [1321] the way [3598] of God [2316] truly [225] [1909]:
