Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Translate, "the lawless one"; the embodiment of all the godless "lawlessness" which has been working in "mystery" for ages (Th2 2:7) : "the man of sin" (Th2 2:3).
whom the Lord--Some of the oldest manuscripts read, "the Lord Jesus." How awful that He whose very name means God-Saviour, should appear as the Destroyer; but the salvation of the Church requires the destruction of her foe. As the reign of Israel in Canaan was ushered in by judgments on the nations for apostasy (for the Canaanites were originally worshippers of the true God: thus Melchisedek, king of Salem, was the "priest of the most high God," Gen 14:18 : Ammon and Moab came from righteous Lot), so the Son of David's reign in Zion and over the whole earth, is to be ushered in by judgments on the apostate Christian world.
consume . . . and . . . destroy--So Dan 7:26, "consume and destroy"; Dan 11:45. He shall "consume" him by His mere breath (Isa 11:4; Isa 30:33) : the sentence of judgment being the sharp sword that goeth out of His mouth (Rev 19:15, Rev 19:21). Antichrist's manifestation and destruction are declared in the same breath; at his greatest height he is nearest his fall, like Herod his type (Isa 1:24-27; Act 12:20-23). As the advancing fire, while still at a distance consumes little insects [CHRYSOSTOM] by its mere heat, so Christ's mere approach is enough to consume Antichrist. The mere "appearance of the coming" of the Lord of glory is sufficient to show to Antichrist his perfect nothingness. He is seized and "cast alive into the take of fire" (Rev 19:20). So the world kingdoms, and the kingdom of the beast, give place to that of the Son of man and His saints. The Greek for "destroy" means "abolish" (the same Greek is so translated, Ti2 1:10); that is, cause every vestige of him to disappear. Compare as to Gog attacking Israel and destroyed by Jehovah (Eze. 38:1-39:29), so as not to leave a vestige of him.
with the brightness of his coming--Greek, "the manifestation, (or appearance) of His presence": the first outburst of His advent--the first gleam of His presence--is enough to abolish utterly all traces of Antichrist, as darkness disappears before the dawning day. Next, his adherents are "slain with the sword out of His mouth" (Rev 19:21). BENGEL'S distinction between "the appearance of His coming" and the "coming" itself is not justified by Ti1 6:14; Ti2 1:10; Ti2 4:1, Ti2 4:8; Tit 2:13, where the same Greek for "appearing" (English Version, here "the brightness") plainly refers to the coming itself. The expression, "manifestation (appearing) of His presence," is used in awful contrast to the revelation of the wicked one in the beginning of the verse. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And then shall that Wicked be revealed - ὁ ἄνομος ho anomos - "the wicked one," referring to the "man of sin," and called "the wicked one" because of the eminent depravity of the system of which he was to be the head; see the notes on Th2 2:3.
Whom the Lord shall consume - The Lord Jesus; see the notes on Act 1:24. The word "consume" here - ἀναλώσει analōsei - means "to destroy;" see Gal 5:15; Luk 9:54. The word would be applicable to any kind of destruction. The methods by which this will be done are immediately specified - and it is of much importance to understand them, if this refers to the papacy. "With the spirit of his mouth." What goes out of his mouth, or what he speaks; that is, word, truth, command, or gospel - all of which he may be regarded as speaking. In Rev 1:16; Rev 19:15, Rev 19:21, it is said of the Redeemer that "a sharp two-edged sword goeth out of his mouth;" that is, his word, doctrine, or command - what he speaks - is like a sharp sword. It will cut deep; will lay open the heart; will destroy his enemies. Compare Isa 11:4, "With the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked." The reference in the passage before us is to one of the methods which would be employed to "destroy" the man of sin; and the sense is, that it would be by what is spoken by the Redeemer. This may refer either to what he will say at his coming, or to his truth - already spoken; to what has gone from his lips, by whomsoever uttered; and the meaning then is, that one of the grand agencies for destroying this anti-Christian power is the truth spoken or revealed by the Saviour - that is, his pure gospel.
If this latter is the true interpretation, it may mean that the process for his destruction may have commenced long anterior to the personal appearing of the Redeemer, but that the complete destruction of this power will be accomplished by the splendor of his second coming. It cannot be denied, however, that the most obvious interpretation is that which refers both clauses in the sentence to the same period - that of his second coming. Still, it is not improper to suppose that it may be implied that his power will be weakened and diminished by the influence of the gospel, though it may not be wholly destroyed until the second coming of the Saviour.
And shall destroy - καταργήσει katargēsei. Shall bring to nothing; cause to cease; put an end to. This is, in some respects, a stronger word than that which in the former part of the verse is rendered "consume." It denotes a more entire destruction than that, though it does not refer so much to any positive agency by which it will be done. In the former word, the attention is directed more to the agency by which the destruction will be effected - to the exertion of some kind of power to do it; in this word the attention is directed rather to the entireness or totality of the destruction. The anti-Christian domination will wholly cease, or be entirely destroyed. The words would naturally harmonize with the idea that there would be a somewhat gradual process under the operation of truth toward the destruction of the man of sin, but that the complete annihilation of his power would be by some more manifest exhibition of the personal glory of the Saviour.
With the brightness of his coming - This is evidently a Hebraism, meaning his splendid or glorious appearing. The Greek word, however, rendered "brightness" (ἐπιφανεία epiphaneia - epiphany) - means merely "an appearing," or "appearance." So it is used in Ti1 6:4; Ti2 1:10; Ti2 4:1, Ti2 4:8; Tit 2:13, in all which places it is rendered appearing, and refers to the manifestation of the Saviour when he shall come to judge the world. It is used nowhere else in the New Testament. There is no necessary idea of splendor in the word, and the idea is not, as our translation would seem to convey, that there would be such a dazzling light, or such unsufferable brightness that all would be consumed before it, but that he would appear, and that this anti-Christian power would be destroyed by his appearing; that is, by himself when he would return. The agency in doing it would not be his brightness, but himself. It would seem to follow from this, that, however this enormous power of wickedness might be weakened by truth, the final triumph over it would be reserved for the Son of God himself on his second return to our world. Yet, if this be so, it need not lessen our zeal in endeavoring to diminish the power of these corruptions; to establish and spread the truth, or to convert the defenders of these errors to a better faith. |

Consume (ἀνελεῖ)
Better, slay, as Mat 2:16; Luk 22:2; Act 5:33.
Spirit (πνεύματι)
Better, breath. Πνεῦμα, almost always translated spirit, is from πνεῖν to breathe or blow. Frequent in class. in this sense. Comp. Joh 3:8; Heb 1:7. lxx, Psa 147:7; Ep. of Jer. 61. Philo says "the spirit of God signifies, in one sense, the air, the third element; and it is used in this sense in the beginning of Genesis... for air, being light, is born up, and uses water as its basis. In the other sense it is the pure wisdom in which every wise man participates" (De Gigantibus, 5). See on Rom 8:4.
Shall destroy (καταργήσει)
See on cumbereth, Luk 13:7 and see on make without effect, Rom 3:3.
With the brightness (τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ)
See on Ti1 6:14. Rev., correctly, manifestation. See lxx, Est 5:1; Amo 5:22; 2 Macc. 2:21; 3 Macc. 2:9. In class. (but late) of deities appearing to a worshipper (Plut. Themistocles, 30): of the sudden appearance of an enemy (Polyb. i. 54, 2): of a manifestation of Providence (Diod. Sic. i. 15): of the heathen gods assuming shape and appearing in order to work mischief (Just. Mart. Apol. i. 5). In N.T. of the parousia. See Ti1 6:14; Ti2 1:10; Ti2 4:1, Ti2 4:8; Tit 2:13. In Ti2 1:10, of Christ's historical manifestation. So ἐπιφαίνω, Tit 2:11; Tit 3:4. Only here in Paul.
Coming (παρουσίας)
Or presence, which is the original meaning. In N.T. with a few exceptions, of the second coming of Christ. The combination manifestation of his presence (only here) appears to emphasize the resistless power of the Son of man, not (as Lightfoot) his splendor and glory. The mere appearing of his presence suffices to destroy his adversary. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
And then - When every prince and power that restrains is taken away. Will that wicked one - Emphatically so called, be revealed. Whom the Lord will soon consume with the spirit of his mouth - His immediate power. And destroy - With the very first appearance of his glory. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Whom the Lord shall consume - He shall blast him so, that he shall wither and die away; and this shall be done by the spirit of his mouth - the words of eternal life, the true doctrine of the Gospel of Jesus; this shall be the instrument used to destroy this man of sin: therefore it is evident his death will not be a sudden but a gradual one; because it is by the preaching of the truth that he is to be exposed, overthrown, and finally destroyed.
The brightness of his coming - This may refer to that full manifestation of the truth which had been obscured and kept under by the exaltation of this man of sin. |
13 Looking for [4327] that blessed [3107] hope [1680], and [2532] the glorious [1391] appearing [2015] of the great [3173] God [2316] and [2532] our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547];
8 Henceforth [3063] there is laid up [606] for me [3427] a crown [4735] of righteousness [1343], which [3739] the Lord [2962], the righteous [1342] judge [2923], shall give [591] me [3427] at [1722] that [1565] day [2250]: and [1161] not [3756] to me [1698] only [3440], but [235] unto all them [3956] also [2532] that love [25] his [846] appearing [2015].
1 I [1473] charge [1263] thee therefore [3767] before [1799] God [2316], and [2532] the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3588] shall [3195] judge [2919] the quick [2198] and [2532] the dead [3498] at [2596] his [846] appearing [2015] and [2532] his [846] kingdom [932];
10 But [1161] is [5319] now [3568] made manifest [5319] by [1223] the appearing [2015] of our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3303] hath abolished [2673] death [2288], and [1161] hath brought [5461] life [2222] and [2532] immortality [861] to light [5461] through [1223] the gospel [2098]:
14 That thou [4571] keep [5083] this commandment [1785] without spot [784], unrebukeable [423], until [3360] the appearing [2015] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547]:
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
20 And [1161] Herod [2264] was [2258] highly displeased [2371] with them of Tyre [5183] and [2532] Sidon [4606]: but [1161] they came [3918] with one accord [3661] to [4314] him [846], and [2532], having made [3982] Blastus [986] the king's [935] chamberlain [1909] [2846] their friend [3982], desired [154] peace [1515]; because [1223] their [846] country [5561] was nourished [5142] by [575] the king's [937] country.
21 And [1161] upon a set [5002] day [2250] Herod [2264], arrayed [1746] in royal [937] apparel [2066], sat [2523] upon [1909] his throne [968], and [2532] made an oration [1215] unto [4314] them [846].
22 And [1161] the people [1218] gave a shout [2019], saying, It is the voice [5456] of a god [2316], and [2532] not [3756] of a man [444].
23 And [1161] immediately [3916] the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] smote [3960] him [846], because [473] [3739] he gave [1325] not [3756] God [2316] the glory [1391]: and [2532] he was [1096] eaten of worms [4662], and gave up the ghost [1634].
24 Therefore saith [05002] the Lord [0113], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], the mighty One [046] of Israel [03478], Ah [01945], I will ease [05162] me of mine adversaries [06862], and avenge [05358] me of mine enemies [0341]:
25 And I will turn [07725] my hand [03027] upon thee, and purely [01253] purge away [06884] thy dross [05509], and take away [05493] all thy tin [0913]:
26 And I will restore [07725] thy judges [08199] as at the first [07223], and thy counsellors [03289] as at the beginning [08462]: afterward [0310] thou shalt be called [07121], The city [05892] of righteousness [06664], the faithful [0539] city [07151].
27 Zion [06726] shall be redeemed [06299] with judgment [04941], and her converts [07725] with righteousness [06666].
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
33 For Tophet [08613] is ordained [06186] of old [0865]; yea, for the king [04428] it is prepared [03559]; he hath made it deep [06009] and large [07337]: the pile [04071] thereof is fire [0784] and much [07235] wood [06086]; the breath [05397] of the LORD [03068], like a stream [05158] of brimstone [01614], doth kindle [01197] it.
4 But with righteousness [06664] shall he judge [08199] the poor [01800], and reprove [03198] with equity [04334] for the meek [06035] of the earth [0776]: and he shall smite [05221] the earth [0776] with the rod [07626] of his mouth [06310], and with the breath [07307] of his lips [08193] shall he slay [04191] the wicked [07563].
45 And he shall plant [05193] the tabernacles [0168] of his palace [0643] between the seas [03220] in the glorious [06643] holy [06944] mountain [02022]; yet he shall come [0935] to his end [07093], and none shall help [05826] him.
26 But the judgment [01780] shall sit [03488], and they shall take away [05709] his dominion [07985], to consume [08046] and to destroy [07] it unto [05705] the end [05491].
18 And Melchizedek [04442] king [04428] of Salem [08004] brought forth [03318] bread [03899] and wine [03196]: and he was the priest [03548] of the most high [05945] God [0410].
3 Let [1818] no [3361] man [5100] deceive [1818] you [5209] by [2596] any [3367] means [5158]: for [3754] that day shall not come, except [3362] there come [2064] a falling away [646] first [4412], and [2532] that man [444] of sin [266] be revealed [601], the son [5207] of perdition [684];
7 For [1063] the mystery [3466] of iniquity [458] doth [1754] already [2235] work [1754]: only [3440] he who now [737] letteth [2722] will let, until [2193] he be taken [1096] out of [1537] the way [3319].
13 Looking for [4327] that blessed [3107] hope [1680], and [2532] the glorious [1391] appearing [2015] of the great [3173] God [2316] and [2532] our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547];
1 I [1473] charge [1263] thee therefore [3767] before [1799] God [2316], and [2532] the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3588] shall [3195] judge [2919] the quick [2198] and [2532] the dead [3498] at [2596] his [846] appearing [2015] and [2532] his [846] kingdom [932];
4 He is proud [5187], knowing [1987] nothing [3367], but [235] doting [3552] about [4012] questions [2214] and [2532] strifes of words [3055], whereof [1537] [3739] cometh [1096] envy [5355], strife [2054], railings [988], evil [4190] surmisings [5283],
4 But with righteousness [06664] shall he judge [08199] the poor [01800], and reprove [03198] with equity [04334] for the meek [06035] of the earth [0776]: and he shall smite [05221] the earth [0776] with the rod [07626] of his mouth [06310], and with the breath [07307] of his lips [08193] shall he slay [04191] the wicked [07563].
16 And [2532] he had [2192] in [1722] his [846] right [1188] hand [5495] seven [2033] stars [792]: and [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] went [1607] a sharp [3691] twoedged [1366] sword [4501]: and [2532] his [846] countenance [3799] was as [5613] the sun [2246] shineth [5316] in [1722] his [846] strength [1411].
54 And [1161] when his [846] disciples [3101] James [2385] and [2532] John [2491] saw [1492] this, they said [2036], Lord [2962], wilt thou [2309] that we command [2036] fire [4442] to come down [2597] from [575] heaven [3772], and [2532] consume [355] them [846], even [2532] as [5613] Elias [2243] did [4160]?
15 But [1161] if [1487] ye bite [1143] and [2532] devour [2719] one another [240], take heed [991] that ye be [335] not [3361] consumed [355] one [240] of [5259] another [240].
24 And [2532] they prayed [4336], and said [2036], Thou [4771], Lord [2962], which knowest the hearts [2589] of all [3956] men, shew [322] whether [3739] [1520] of [1537] these [5130] two [1417] thou hast chosen [1586],
3 Let [1818] no [3361] man [5100] deceive [1818] you [5209] by [2596] any [3367] means [5158]: for [3754] that day shall not come, except [3362] there come [2064] a falling away [646] first [4412], and [2532] that man [444] of sin [266] be revealed [601], the son [5207] of perdition [684];
4 But [1161] after [3753] that the kindness [5544] and [2532] love [5363] of God [2316] our [2257] Saviour [4990] toward man [5363] appeared [2014],
11 For [1063] the grace [5485] of God [2316] that bringeth salvation [4992] hath appeared [2014] to all [3956] men [444],
10 But [1161] is [5319] now [3568] made manifest [5319] by [1223] the appearing [2015] of our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3303] hath abolished [2673] death [2288], and [1161] hath brought [5461] life [2222] and [2532] immortality [861] to light [5461] through [1223] the gospel [2098]:
13 Looking for [4327] that blessed [3107] hope [1680], and [2532] the glorious [1391] appearing [2015] of the great [3173] God [2316] and [2532] our [2257] Saviour [4990] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547];
1 I [1473] charge [1263] thee therefore [3767] before [1799] God [2316], and [2532] the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who [3588] shall [3195] judge [2919] the quick [2198] and [2532] the dead [3498] at [2596] his [846] appearing [2015] and [2532] his [846] kingdom [932];
22 Though ye offer [05927] me burnt offerings [05930] and your meat offerings [04503], I will not accept [07521] them: neither will I regard [05027] the peace offerings [08002] of your fat beasts [04806].
1 Now it came to pass on the third [07992] day [03117], that Esther [0635] put on [03847] her royal [04438] apparel, and stood [05975] in the inner [06442] court [02691] of the king's [04428] house [01004], over against [05227] the king's [04428] house [01004]: and the king [04428] sat [03427] upon his royal [04438] throne [03678] in the royal [04438] house [01004], over against [05227] the gate [06607] of the house [01004].
14 That thou [4571] keep [5083] this commandment [1785] without spot [784], unrebukeable [423], until [3360] the appearing [2015] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547]:
3 For [1063] what [5101] if [1487] some [5100] did not believe [569]? [3361] shall [2673] their [846] unbelief [570] make [2673] the faith [4102] of God [2316] without effect [2673]?
7 Then [1161] said he [2036] unto [4314] the dresser of his vineyard [289], Behold [2400], these three [5140] years [2094] I come [2064] seeking [2212] fruit [2590] on [1722] this [5026] fig tree [4808], and [2532] find [2147] none [3756]: cut [1581] it [846] down [1581]; why [2444] [2532] cumbereth [2673] it [846] the ground [1093]?
4 That [2443] the righteousness [1345] of the law [3551] might be fulfilled [4137] in [1722] us [2254], who walk [4043] not [3361] after [2596] the flesh [4561], but [235] after [2596] the Spirit [4151].
7 Sing [06030] unto the LORD [03068] with thanksgiving [08426]; sing praise [02167] upon the harp [03658] unto our God [0430]:
7 And [2532] of [4314] [3303] the angels [32] he saith [3004], Who maketh [4160] his [846] angels [32] spirits [4151], and [2532] his [846] ministers [3011] a flame [5395] of fire [4442].
8 The wind [4151] bloweth [4154] where [3699] it listeth [2309], and [2532] thou hearest [191] the sound [5456] thereof [846], but [235] canst [1492] not [3756] tell [1492] whence [4159] it cometh [2064], and [2532] whither [4226] it goeth [5217]: so [3779] is [2076] every one [3956] that is born [1080] of [1537] the Spirit [4151].
33 When [1161] they heard [191] that, they were cut [1282] to the heart, and [2532] took counsel [1011] to slay [337] them [846].
2 And [2532] the chief priests [749] and [2532] scribes [1122] sought [2212] how [4459] they might kill [337] him [846]; for [1063] they feared [5399] the people [2992].
16 Then [5119] Herod [2264], when he saw [1492] that [3754] he was mocked [1702] of [5259] the wise men [3097], was exceeding [3029] wroth [2373], and [2532] sent forth [649], and slew [337] all [3956] the children [3816] that were in [1722] Bethlehem [965], and [2532] in [1722] all [3956] the coasts [3725] thereof [846], from [575] two years old [1332] and [2532] under [2736], according [2596] to the time [5550] which [3739] he had diligently enquired [198] of [3844] the wise men [3097].
