Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Therefore--God's sovereign choice of believers, so far from being a ground for inaction on their part, is the strongest incentive to action and perseverance in it. Compare the argument, Phi 2:12-13, "Work out your own salvation, FOR it is God which worketh in you," &c. We cannot fully explain this in theory; but to the sincere and humble, the practical acting on the principle is plain. "Privilege first, duty afterwards" [EDMUNDS].
stand fast--so as not to be "shaken or troubled" (Th2 2:2).
hold--so as not to let go. Adding nothing, subtracting nothing [BENGEL]. The Thessalonians had not held fast his oral instructions but had suffered themselves to be imposed upon by pretended spirit-revelations, and words and letters pretending to be from Paul (Th2 2:2), to the effect that "the day of the Lord was instantly imminent."
traditions--truths delivered and transmitted orally, or in writing (Th2 3:6; Co1 11:2; Greek, "traditions"). The Greek verb from which the noun comes, is used by Paul in Co1 11:23; Co1 15:3. From the three passages in which "tradition" is used in a good sense, Rome has argued for her accumulation of uninspired traditions, virtually overriding God's Word, while put forward as of co-ordinate authority with it. She forgets the ten passages (Mat 15:2-3, Mat 15:6; Mar 7:3, Mar 7:5, Mar 7:8-9, Mar 7:13; Gal 1:14; Col 2:8) stigmatizing man's uninspired traditions. Not even the apostles' sayings were all inspired (for example, Peter's dissimulation, Gal 2:11-14), but only when they claimed to be so, as in their words afterwards embodied in their canonical writings. Oral inspiration was necessary in their case, until the canon of the written Word should be complete; they proved their possession of inspiration by miracles wrought in support of the new revelation, which revelation, moreover, accorded with the existing Old Testament revelation; an additional test needed besides miracles (compare Deu 13:1-6; Act 17:11). When the canon was complete, the infallibility of the living men was transferred to the written Word, now the sole unerring guide, interpreted by the Holy Spirit. Little else has come down to us by the most ancient and universal tradition save this, the all-sufficiency of Scripture for salvation. Therefore, by tradition, we are constrained to cast off all tradition not contained in, or not provable by, Scripture. The Fathers are valuable witnesses to historical facts, which give force to the intimations of Scripture: such as the Christian Lord's day, the baptism of infants, and the genuineness of the canon of Scripture. Tradition (in the sense of human testimony) cannot establish a doctrine, but can authenticate a fact, such as the facts just mentioned. Inspired tradition, in Paul's sense, is not a supplementary oral tradition completing our written Word, but it is identical with the written Word now complete; then the latter not being complete, the tradition was necessarily in part oral, in part written, and continued so until, the latter being complete before the death of St. John, the last apostle, the former was no longer needed. Scripture is, according to Paul, the complete and sufficient rule in all that appertains to making "the man of God perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (Ti2 3:16-17). It is by leaving Paul's God-inspired tradition for human traditions that Rome has become the forerunner and parent of the Antichrist. It is striking that, from this very chapter denouncing Antichrist, she should draw an argument for her "traditions" by which she fosters anti-Christianity. Because the apostles' oral word was as trustworthy as their written word, it by no means follows that the oral word of those not apostles is as trustworthy as the written word of those who were apostles or inspired evangelists. No tradition of the apostles except their written word can be proved genuine on satisfactory evidence. We are no more bound to accept implicitly the Fathers' interpretations of Scripture, because we accept the Scripture canon on their testimony, than we are bound to accept the Jews' interpretation of the Old Testament, because we accept the Old Testament canon on their testimony.
our epistle--as distinguished from a "letter AS from us," Th2 2:2, namely, that purports to be from us, but is not. He refers to his first Epistle to the Thessalonians. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Therefore - In view of the fact that you are thus chosen from eternity, and that you are to be raised up to such honor and glory.
Stand fast - Amidst all the temptations which surround you; compare the notes on Eph 6:10-14. And hold the traditions which ye have been taught On the word "traditions," see the notes on Mat 15:2. It means properly things delivered over from one to another; then anything orally delivered - any precept, doctrine, or law. It is frequently employed to denote that which is not written, as contradistinguished from that which is written (compare Mat 15:2), but not necessarily or always; for here the apostle speaks of the "traditions which they had been taught by his epistle;" compare the notes, Co1 11:2. Here it means the doctrines or precepts which they had received from the apostle, whether when he was with them, or after he left them; whether communicated by preaching or by letter. This passage can furnish no authority for holding the "traditions" which have come down from ancient times, and which profess to have been derived from the apostles; because:
(1) there is no evidence that any of those traditions were given by the apostles;
(2) many of them are manifestly so trifling, false, and contrary to the writings of the apostles, that they could not have been delivered by them;
(3) if any of them are genuine, it is impossible to separate them from those which are false;
(4) we have all that is necessary for salvation in the written word; and,
(5) there is not the least evidence that the apostle here meant to refer to any such thing.
He speaks only of what had been delivered to them by himself, whether orally or by letter; not of what was delivered from one to another as from him. There is no intimation here that they were to hold anything as from him which they had not received directly from him, either by his own instructions personally or by letter. With what propriety, then, can this passage be adduced to prove that we are to hold the traditions which professedly come to us through a great number of intermediate persons? Where is the evidence here that the church was to hold those unwritten traditions, and transmit them to future times?
Whether by word - By preaching, when we were with you. It does not mean that he had sent any oral message to them by a third person.
Or our epistle - The former letter which he had written to them. |

Traditions (παραδόσεις)
See on Co1 11:2. Not emphasizing a distinction between written and oral tradition. Tradition, in the scriptural sense, may be either written or oral. It implies on the part of a teacher that he is not expressing his own ideas, but is delivering or handing over (παραδίδωμι) a message received from some one else. See Co1 11:23. The prominent idea of παράδοσις is therefore that of an authority external to the teacher. Comp. by word nor by letter, Th2 2:2. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Hold - Without adding to, or diminishing from, the traditions which ye have been taught - The truths which I have delivered to you. Whether by word or by our epistle - He preached before he wrote. And he had written concerning this in his former epistle. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Therefore, brethren, stand fast - Their obtaining eternal glory depended on their faithfulness to the grace of God; for this calling did not necessarily and irresistibly lead to faith; nor their faith to the sanctification of the spirit; nor their sanctification of the spirit to the glory of our Lord Jesus. Had they not attended to the calling, they could not have believed; had they not believed, they could not have been sanctified; had they not been sanctified they could not have been glorified. All these things depended on each other; they were stages of the great journey; and at any of these stages they might have halted, and never finished their Christian race.
Hold the traditions which ye have been taught - The word παραδοσις, which we render tradition, signifies any thing delivered in the way of teaching; and here most obviously means the doctrines delivered by the apostle to the Thessalonians; whether in his preaching, private conversation, or by these epistles; and particularly the first epistle, as the apostle here states. Whatever these traditions were, as to their matter, they were a revelation from God; for they came by men who spake and acted under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; and on this ground the passage here can never with any propriety be brought to support the unapostolical and anti-apostolical traditions of the Romish Church; those being matters which are, confessedly, not taken from either Testament, nor were spoken either by a prophet or an apostle. |
2 That [1519] ye [5209] be [4531] not [3361] soon [5030] shaken [4531] in [575] mind [3563], or [3383] be troubled [2360], neither [3383] by [1223] spirit [4151], nor [3383] by [1223] word [3056], nor [3383] by [1223] letter [1992] as [5613] from [1223] us [2257], as [5613] that [3754] the day [2250] of Christ [5547] is at hand [1764].
16 All [3956] scripture [1124] is given by inspiration of God [2315], and [2532] is profitable for [4314] doctrine [1319], for [4314] reproof [1650], for [4314] correction [1882], for [4314] instruction [3809] in [1722] righteousness [1343]:
17 That [2443] the man [444] of God [2316] may be [5600] perfect [739], throughly furnished [1822] unto [4314] all [3956] good [18] works [2041].
11 [1161] These [3778] were [2258] more noble [2104] than those in [1722] Thessalonica [2332], in that they [3748] received [1209] the word [3056] with [3326] all [3956] readiness of mind [4288], and searched [350] the scriptures [1124] daily [2250] [2596], whether [1487] those things [5023] were [2192] so [3779].
1 If there arise [06965] among [07130] you a prophet [05030], or a dreamer [02492] of dreams [02472], and giveth [05414] thee a sign [0226] or a wonder [04159],
2 And the sign [0226] or the wonder [04159] come to pass [0935], whereof he spake [01696] unto thee, saying [0559], Let us go [03212] after [0310] other [0312] gods [0430], which thou hast not known [03045], and let us serve [05647] them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken [08085] unto the words [01697] of that prophet [05030], or that dreamer [02492] of dreams [02472]: for the LORD [03068] your God [0430] proveth [05254] you, to know [03045] whether ye [03426] love [0157] the LORD [03068] your God [0430] with all your heart [03824] and with all your soul [05315].
4 Ye shall walk [03212] after [0310] the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and fear [03372] him, and keep [08104] his commandments [04687], and obey [08085] his voice [06963], and ye shall serve [05647] him, and cleave [01692] unto him.
5 And that prophet [05030], or that dreamer [02492] of dreams [02472], shall be put to death [04191]; because he hath spoken [01696] to turn [05627] you away from the LORD [03068] your God [0430], which brought you out [03318] of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], and redeemed [06299] you out of the house [01004] of bondage [05650], to thrust [05080] thee out of the way [01870] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] commanded [06680] thee to walk in [03212]. So shalt thou put [01197] the evil [07451] away [01197] from the midst [07130] of thee.
6 If thy brother [0251], the son [01121] of thy mother [0517], or thy son [01121], or thy daughter [01323], or the wife [0802] of thy bosom [02436], or thy friend [07453], which is as thine own soul [05315], entice [05496] thee secretly [05643], saying [0559], Let us go [03212] and serve [05647] other [0312] gods [0430], which thou hast not known [03045], thou, nor thy fathers [01];
11 But [1161] when [3753] Peter [4074] was come [2064] to [1519] Antioch [490], I withstood [436] him [846] to [2596] the face [4383], because [3754] he was [2258] to be blamed [2607].
12 For [1063] before [4253] that certain [5100] came [2064] from [575] James [2385], he did eat [4906] with [3326] the Gentiles [1484]: but [1161] when [3753] they were come [2064], he withdrew [5288] and [2532] separated [873] himself [1438], fearing [5399] them which were of [1537] the circumcision [4061].
13 And [2532] the other [3062] Jews [2453] dissembled [4942] likewise [2532] with him [846]; insomuch [5620] that Barnabas [921] also [2532] was carried away [4879] with their [846] dissimulation [5272].
14 But [235] when [3753] I saw [1492] that [3754] they walked [3716] not [3756] uprightly [3716] according to [4314] the truth [225] of the gospel [2098], I said [2036] unto Peter [4074] before [1715] them all [3956], If [1487] thou [4771], being [5225] a Jew [2453], livest [2198] after the manner of Gentiles [1483], and [2532] not [3756] as do the Jews [2452], why [5101] compellest thou [315] the Gentiles [1484] to live as do the Jews [2450]?
8 Beware [991] lest [3361] any man [5100] spoil [2071] [4812] you [5209] through [1223] philosophy [5385] and [2532] vain [2756] deceit [539], after [2596] the tradition [3862] of men [444], after [2596] the rudiments [4747] of the world [2889], and [2532] not [3756] after [2596] Christ [5547].
14 And [2532] profited [4298] in [1722] the Jews' religion [2454] above [5228] many [4183] my equals [4915] in [1722] mine own [3450] nation [1085], being [5225] more exceedingly [4056] zealous [2207] of the traditions [3862] of my [3450] fathers [3967].
13 Making [208] the word [3056] of God [2316] of none effect [208] through your [5216] tradition [3862], which [3739] ye have delivered [3860]: and [2532] many [4183] such [5108] like things [3946] do ye [4160].
8 For [1063] laying aside [863] the commandment [1785] of God [2316], ye hold [2902] the tradition [3862] of men [444], as the washing [909] of pots [3582] and [2532] cups [4221]: and [2532] many [4183] other [243] such [5108] like things [3946] ye do [4160].
9 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], Full well [2573] ye reject [114] the commandment [1785] of God [2316], that [2443] ye may keep [5083] your own [5216] tradition [3862].
5 Then [1899] the Pharisees [5330] and [2532] scribes [1122] asked [1905] him [846], Why [1302] walk [4043] not [3756] thy [4675] disciples [3101] according [2596] to the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245], but [235] eat [2068] bread [740] with unwashen [449] hands [5495]?
3 For [1063] the Pharisees [5330], and [2532] all [3956] the Jews [2453], except [3362] they wash [3538] their hands [5495] oft [4435], eat [2068] not [3756], holding [2902] the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245].
6 And [2532] honour [5091] not [3364] his [846] father [3962] or [2228] his [846] mother [3384], he shall be free. Thus [2532] have ye made [208] the commandment [1785] of God [2316] of none effect [208] by [1223] your [5216] tradition [3862].
2 Why [1302] do thy [4675] disciples [3101] transgress [3845] the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245]? for [1063] they wash [3538] not [3756] their [846] hands [5495] when [3752] they eat [2068] bread [740].
3 But [1161] he answered [611] and said [2036] unto them [846], Why [1302] do ye [5210] also [2532] transgress [3845] the commandment [1785] of God [2316] by [1223] your [5216] tradition [3862]?
3 For [1063] I delivered [3860] unto you [5213] first of all [1722] [4413] that which [3739] I [3880] also [2532] received [3880], how [3754] that Christ [5547] died [599] for [5228] our [2257] sins [266] according [2596] to the scriptures [1124];
23 For [1063] I [1473] have received [3880] of [575] the Lord [2962] that which [3739] also [2532] I delivered [3860] unto you [5213], That [3754] the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] the same night [3571] in [1722] which [3739] he was betrayed [3860] took [2983] bread [740]:
2 Now [1161] I praise [1867] you [5209], brethren [80], that [3754] ye remember [3415] me [3450] in all things [3956], and [2532] keep [2722] the ordinances [3862], as [2531] I delivered [3860] them to you [5213].
6 Now [1161] we command [3853] you [5213], brethren [80], in [1722] the name [3686] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], that ye withdraw [4724] yourselves [5209] from [575] every [3956] brother [80] that walketh [4043] disorderly [814], and [2532] not [3361] after [2596] the tradition [3862] which [3739] he received [3880] of [3844] us [2257].
12 Wherefore [5620], my [3450] beloved [27], as [2531] ye have [5219] always [3842] obeyed [5219], not [3361] as [5613] in [1722] my [3450] presence [3952] only [3440], but [235] now [3568] much [4183] more [3123] in [1722] my [3450] absence [666], work out [2716] your own [1438] salvation [4991] with [3326] fear [5401] and [2532] trembling [5156].
13 For [1063] it is [2076] God [2316] which [3588] worketh [1754] in [1722] you [5213] both [2532] to will [2309] and [2532] to do [1754] of [5228] his good pleasure [2107].
2 Now [1161] I praise [1867] you [5209], brethren [80], that [3754] ye remember [3415] me [3450] in all things [3956], and [2532] keep [2722] the ordinances [3862], as [2531] I delivered [3860] them to you [5213].
2 Why [1302] do thy [4675] disciples [3101] transgress [3845] the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245]? for [1063] they wash [3538] not [3756] their [846] hands [5495] when [3752] they eat [2068] bread [740].
2 Why [1302] do thy [4675] disciples [3101] transgress [3845] the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245]? for [1063] they wash [3538] not [3756] their [846] hands [5495] when [3752] they eat [2068] bread [740].
10 Finally [3063], my [3450] brethren [80], be strong [1743] in [1722] the Lord [2962], and [2532] in [1722] the power [2904] of his [846] might [2479].
11 Put on [1746] the whole armour [3833] of God [2316], that [4314] ye [5209] may be able [1410] to stand [2476] against [4314] the wiles [3180] of the devil [1228].
12 For [3754] we [2254] wrestle [3823] not [3756] against [2076] [4314] flesh [4561] and [2532] blood [129], but [235] against [4314] principalities [746], against [4314] powers [1849], against [4314] the rulers [2888] of the darkness [4655] of this [5127] world [165], against [4314] spiritual [4152] wickedness [4189] in [1722] high [2032] places.
13 Wherefore [1223] [5124] take unto you [353] the whole armour [3833] of God [2316], that [2443] ye may be able [1410] to withstand [436] in [1722] the evil [4190] day [2250], and [2532] having done [2716] all [537], to stand [2476].
14 Stand [2476] therefore [3767], having [4024] your [5216] loins [3751] girt about [4024] with [1722] truth [225], and [2532] having on [1746] the breastplate [2382] of righteousness [1343];
