THE STORY IS CONTINUED. (Deu. 2:1-37)

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea--After their unsuccessful attack upon the Canaanites, the Israelites broke up their encampment at Kadesh, and journeying southward over the west desert of Tih as well as through the great valley of the Ghor and Arabah, they extended their removals as far as the gulf of Akaba.

we compassed mount Seir many days--In these few words Moses comprised the whole of that wandering nomadic life through which they passed during thirty-eight years, shifting from place to place, and regulating their stations by the prospect of pasturage and water. Within the interval they went northward a second time to Kadesh, but being refused a passage through Edom and opposed by the Canaanites and Amalekites, they again had no alternative but to traverse once more the great Arabah southwards to the Red Sea, where turning to the left and crossing the long, lofty mountain chain to the eastward of Ezion-geber (Num 21:4-5), they issued into the great and elevated plains, which are still traversed by the Syrian pilgrims in their way to Mecca. They appear to have followed northward nearly the same route, which is now taken by the Syrian hadji, along the western skirts of this great desert, near the mountains of Edom [ROBINSON]. It was on entering these plains they received the command, "Ye have compassed this mountain (this hilly tract, now Jebel Shera) long enough, turn ye northward" [Deu 2:3].

3 Ye have compassed [05437] this mountain [02022] long enough [07227]: turn [06437] you northward [06828].
4 And they journeyed [05265] from mount [02022] Hor [02023] by the way [01870] of the Red [05488] sea [03220], to compass [05437] the land [0776] of Edom [0123]: and the soul [05315] of the people [05971] was much discouraged [07114] because of the way [01870].
5 And the people [05971] spake [01696] against God [0430], and against Moses [04872], Wherefore have ye brought us up [05927] out of Egypt [04714] to die [04191] in the wilderness [04057]? for there is no bread [03899], neither is there any water [04325]; and our soul [05315] loatheth [06973] this light [07052] bread [03899].
8 And when we passed [05674] by from our brethren [0251] the children [01121] of Esau [06215], which dwelt [03427] in Seir [08165], through the way [01870] of the plain [06160] from Elath [0359], and from Eziongaber [06100], we turned [06437] and passed [05674] by the way [01870] of the wilderness [04057] of Moab [04124].
18 Then they went along [03212] through the wilderness [04057], and compassed [05437] the land [0776] of Edom [0123], and the land [0776] of Moab [04124], and came [0935] by the east side [04217] [08121] of the land [0776] of Moab [04124], and pitched [02583] on the other side [05676] of Arnon [0769], but came [0935] not within the border [01366] of Moab [04124]: for Arnon [0769] was the border [01366] of Moab [04124].
37 And they removed [05265] from Kadesh [06946], and pitched [02583] in mount [02022] Hor [02023], in the edge [07097] of the land [0776] of Edom [0123].
22 And the children [01121] of Israel [03478], even the whole congregation [05712], journeyed [05265] from Kadesh [06946], and came [0935] unto mount [02022] Hor [02023].
2 And the LORD [03068] spake [0559] unto me, saying [0559],
3 Ye have compassed [05437] this mountain [02022] long enough [07227]: turn [06437] you northward [06828].
1 Then we turned [06437], and took our journey [05265] into the wilderness [04057] by the way [01870] of the Red [05488] sea [03220], as the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto me: and we compassed [05437] mount [02022] Seir [08165] many [07227] days [03117].
