Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
To regard the observance of certain days as in itself meritorious as a work, is alien to the free spirit of Christianity. This is not incompatible with observing the Sabbath or the Christian Lord's day as obligatory, though not as a work (which was the Jewish and Gentile error in the observance of days), but as a holy mean appointed by the Lord for attaining the great end, holiness. The whole life alike belongs to the Lord in the Gospel view, just as the whole world, and not the Jews only, belong to Him. But as in Paradise, so now one portion of time is needed wherein to draw off the soul more entirely from secular business to God (Col 2:16). "Sabbaths, new moons, and set feasts" (Ch1 23:31; Ch2 31:3), answer to "days, months, times." "Months," however, may refer to the first and seventh months, which were sacred on account of the number of feasts in them.
times--Greek, "seasons," namely, those of the three great feasts, the Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.
years--The sabbatical year was about the time of writing this Epistle, A.D. 48 [BENGEL]. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Ye observe - The object of this verse is to specify some of the things to which they had become enslaved.
Days - The days here referred to are doubtless the days of the Jewish festivals. They had numerous days of such observances, and in addition to those specified in the Old Testament, the Jews had added many others as days commemorative of the destruction and rebuilding of the temple, and of other important events in their history. It is not a fair interpretation of this to suppose that the apostle refers to the Sabbath, properly so called, for this was a part of the Decalogue; and was observed by the Saviour himself, and by the apostles also. It is a fair interpretation to apply it to all those days which are not commanded to be kept holy in the Scriptures; and hence, the passage is as applicable to the observance of saints' days, and days in honor of particular events in sacred history, as to the days observed by the Galatians. There is as real servitude in the observance of the numerous festivals, and fasts in the papal communion and in some Protestant churches, as there was in the observance of the days in the Jewish ecclesiastical calendar, and for anything that I can see, such observances are as inconsistent now with the freedom of the gospel as they were in the time of Paul. We should observe as seasons of holy time what it can be proved God has commanded us, and no more.
And months - The festivals of the new moon, kept by the Jews. Num 10:10; Num 28:11-14. On this festival, in addition to the daily sacrifice, two bullocks, a ram, and seven sheep of a year old were offered in sacrifice. The appearance of the new-moon was announced by the sound of trumpets. See Jahn, Archae. 352.
And times - Stated times; festivals returning periodically, as the Passover, the Feast of Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. See Jahn, Archae. chap. 3. 346-360.
And years - The sabbatical year, or the year of jubilee. See Jahn as above. |
Vincent's Word Studies, by Marvin R. Vincent [1886] |
Ye observe (παρατήρεισθε)
See on Mar 3:2, and see on Joh 18:12, and comp. Joseph. Ant. 3:5, 5, παρατηρεῖν τὰς ἑβδομάδας to watch the weeks. The word denotes careful, scrupulous observance, an intent watching lest any of the prescribed seasons should be overlooked. A merely legal or ritual religion always develops such scrupulousness.
Days
Sabbaths, fast-days, feast-days, new moons. Comp. Rom 14:5, Rom 14:6; Col 2:16.
Months
Sacred months. Comp. Isa 66:23. In the preexilic time the months were mostly not named but numbered first, second, third, etc., and this usage appears also in the post-exilic writings of the O.T. Only four months had special names: the first, Abib, the ear month, which marked the beginning of harvest (Exo 13:4; Exo 23:15; Exo 34:18): the second, Sif or Zv, the flower month (Kg1 6:1, Kg1 6:37): the seventh, Ethanum, the month of streaming rivers fed by the autumnal rains (Kg1 8:2): the eighth, Bul, the month of rain (Kg1 6:38). In the post-exilic time names for all the months came into use, the most of which appear in the Palmyrene inscriptions and among the Syrians. According to the Talmud, the returning Jews brought these names from Babylon. The names of all are found in a month table discovered at Nineveh. Nsan corresponds to Abib (Neh 2:1; Est 3:7), answering to the latter part of March and April. Jjar answered to Ziv (Targ. Ch2 30:2), our May. Tisri to Ethanim, the seventh month of the ecclesiastical, and the first of the civil year, corresponding to October. Marcheschwan (see Joseph. Ant. 1:3, 3) answered to Bul and November. Tisri, being the seventh or sabbatical month, was peculiarly sacred, and the fourth (Sivan, June), fifth (Ab, August), and tenth (Tebeth, January) were distinguished by special fasts.
Times (καιροὺς)
Better, seasons. See on Mat 12:1; see on Eph 1:10, and comp. Lev 23:4. The holy, festal seasons, as Passover Pentecost, Feast of Tabernacles. See Ch2 8:13.
Years (ἐνιαυτούς)
Sabbatical years, occurring every seventh year. Not years of Jubilee, which had ceased to be celebrated after the time of Solomon. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Ye observe days - Jewish sabbaths. And months - New moons. And times - As that of the passover, pentecost, and the feast of tabernacles. And years - Annual solemnities. it does not mean sabbatic years. These were not to be observed out of the land of Canaan. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Ye observe days - Ye superstitiously regard the Sabbaths and particular days of your own appointment;
And months - New moons; times - festivals, such as those of tabernacles, dedication, passover, etc.
Years - Annual atonements, sabbatical years, and jubilees. |
3 He appointed also the king's [04428] portion [04521] of his substance [07399] for the burnt offerings [05930], to wit, for the morning [01242] and evening [06153] burnt offerings [05930], and the burnt offerings [05930] for the sabbaths [07676], and for the new moons [02320], and for the set feasts [04150], as it is written [03789] in the law [08451] of the LORD [03068].
31 And to offer [05927] all burnt sacrifices [05930] unto the LORD [03068] in the sabbaths [07676], in the new moons [02320], and on the set feasts [04150], by number [04557], according to the order [04941] commanded unto them, continually [08548] before [06440] the LORD [03068]:
16 Let [2919] no [3361] man [5100] therefore [3767] judge [2919] you [5209] in [1722] meat [1035], or [2228] in [1722] drink [4213], or [2228] in [1722] respect [3313] of an holyday [1859], or [2228] of the new moon [3561], or [2228] of the sabbath [4521] days:
11 And in the beginnings [07218] of your months [02320] ye shall offer [07126] a burnt offering [05930] unto the LORD [03068]; two [08147] young [01241] bullocks [06499], and one [0259] ram [0352], seven [07651] lambs [03532] of the first [01121] year [08141] without spot [08549];
12 And three [07969] tenth deals [06241] of flour [05560] for a meat offering [04503], mingled [01101] with oil [08081], for one [0259] bullock [06499]; and two [08147] tenth [06241] deals of flour [05560] for a meat offering [04503], mingled [01101] with oil [08081], for one [0259] ram [0352];
13 And a several tenth deal [06241] of flour [05560] mingled [01101] with oil [08081] for a meat offering [04503] unto one [0259] lamb [03532]; for a burnt offering [05930] of a sweet [05207] savour [07381], a sacrifice made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
14 And their drink offerings [05262] shall be half [02677] an hin [01969] of wine [03196] unto a bullock [06499], and the third [07992] part of an hin [01969] unto a ram [0352], and a fourth [07243] part of an hin [01969] unto a lamb [03532]: this is the burnt offering [05930] of every month [02320] throughout the months [02320] of the year [08141].
10 Also in the day [03117] of your gladness [08057], and in your solemn days [04150], and in the beginnings [07218] of your months [02320], ye shall blow [08628] with the trumpets [02689] over your burnt offerings [05930], and over the sacrifices [02077] of your peace offerings [08002]; that they may be to you for a memorial [02146] before [06440] your God [0430]: I am the LORD [03068] your God [0430].
13 Even after a certain rate [01697] every day [03117], offering [05927] according to the commandment [04687] of Moses [04872], on the sabbaths [07676], and on the new moons [02320], and on the solemn feasts [04150], three [07969] times [06471] in the year [08141], even in the feast [02282] of unleavened bread [04682], and in the feast [02282] of weeks [07620], and in the feast [02282] of tabernacles [05521].
4 These are the feasts [04150] of the LORD [03068], even holy [06944] convocations [04744], which ye shall proclaim [07121] in their seasons [04150].
10 That in [1519] the dispensation [3622] of the fulness [4138] of times [2540] he might gather together in one [346] all things [3956] in [1722] Christ [5547], both [5037] which [3588] are in [1722] heaven [3772], and [2532] which [3588] are on [1909] earth [1093]; even in [1722] him [846]:
1 At [1722] that [1565] time [2540] Jesus [2424] went [4198] on the sabbath day [4521] through [1223] the corn [4702]; and [1161] his [846] disciples [3101] were an hungred [3983], and [2532] began [756] to pluck [5089] the ears of corn [4719], and [2532] to eat [2068].
2 For the king [04428] had taken counsel [03289], and his princes [08269], and all the congregation [06951] in Jerusalem [03389], to keep [06213] the passover [06453] in the second [08145] month [02320].
7 In the first [07223] month [02320], that is, the month [02320] Nisan [05212], in the twelfth [08147] [06240] year [08141] of king [04428] Ahasuerus [0325], they cast [05307] Pur [06332], that is, the lot [01486], before [06440] Haman [02001] from day [03117] to day [03117], and from month [02320] to month [02320], to the twelfth [08147] [06240] month, that is, the month [02320] Adar [0143].
1 And it came to pass in the month [02320] Nisan [05212], in the twentieth [06242] year [08141] of Artaxerxes [0783] the king [04428], that wine [03196] was before [06440] him: and I took up [05375] the wine [03196], and gave [05414] it unto the king [04428]. Now I had not been beforetime sad [07451] in his presence [06440].
38 And in the eleventh [0259] [06240] year [08141], in the month [03391] Bul [0945], which is the eighth [08066] month [02320], was the house [01004] finished [03615] throughout all the parts [01697] thereof, and according to all the fashion [04941] of it. So was he seven [07651] years [08141] in building [01129] it.
2 And all the men [0376] of Israel [03478] assembled [06950] themselves unto king [04428] Solomon [08010] at the feast [02282] in the month [03391] Ethanim [0388], which is the seventh [07637] month [02320].
37 In the fourth [07243] year [08141] was the foundation [03245] of the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] laid [03245], in the month [03391] Zif [02099]:
1 And it came to pass in the four [0702] hundred [03967] [08141] and eightieth [08084] year [08141] after the children [01121] of Israel [03478] were come out [03318] of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], in the fourth [07243] year [08141] of Solomon's [08010] reign [04427] over Israel [03478], in the month [02320] Zif [02099], which is the second [08145] month [02320], that he began to build [01129] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
18 The feast [02282] of unleavened bread [04682] shalt thou keep [08104]. Seven [07651] days [03117] thou shalt eat [0398] unleavened bread [04682], as I commanded [06680] thee, in the time [04150] of the month [02320] Abib [024]: for in the month [02320] Abib [024] thou camest out [03318] from Egypt [04714].
15 Thou shalt keep [08104] the feast [02282] of unleavened bread [04682]: (thou shalt eat [0398] unleavened bread [04682] seven [07651] days [03117], as I commanded [06680] thee, in the time appointed [04150] of the month [02320] Abib [024]; for in it thou camest out [03318] from Egypt [04714]: and none shall appear [07200] before [06440] me empty [07387]:)
4 This day [03117] came ye out [03318] in the month [02320] Abib [024].
23 And it shall come to pass, that from [01767] one new moon [02320] to another [02320], and from [01767] one sabbath [07676] to another [07676], shall all flesh [01320] come [0935] to worship [07812] before [06440] me, saith [0559] the LORD [03068].
6 He that regardeth [5426] the day [2250], regardeth [5426] it unto the Lord [2962]; and [2532] he that regardeth [5426] not [3361] the day [2250], to the Lord [2962] he doth [5426] not [3756] regard [5426] it. He that eateth [2068], eateth [2068] to the Lord [2962], for [1063] he giveth God [2316] thanks [2168]; and [2532] he that eateth [2068] not [3361], to the Lord [2962] he eateth [2068] not [3756], and [2532] giveth God [2316] thanks [2168].
5 One [3303] man [3739] esteemeth [2919] one day [2250] above [3844] another [2250]: [1161] another [3739] esteemeth [2919] every [3956] day [2250] alike. Let [4135] every man [1538] be fully persuaded [4135] in [1722] his own [2398] mind [3563].
12 Then [3767] the band [4686] and [2532] the captain [5506] and [2532] officers [5257] of the Jews [2453] took [4815] Jesus [2424], and [2532] bound [1210] him [846],
2 And [2532] they watched [3906] him [846], whether [1487] he would heal [2323] him [846] on the sabbath day [4521]; that [2443] they might accuse [2723] him [846].
