A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
they that weep . . . wept not--(Compare Co2 6:10).

they that buy . . . possessed not--(Compare Isa 24:1-2). Christ specifies as the condemning sin of the men of Sodom not merely their open profligacy, but that "they bought, they sold," &c., as men whose all was in this world (Luk 17:28). "Possessed" in the Greek implies a holding fast of a possession; this the Christian will not do, for his "enduring substance" is elsewhere (Heb 10:34).

34 For [2532] [1063] ye had compassion [4834] of me in my [3450] bonds [1199], and [2532] took [4327] joyfully [3326] [5479] the spoiling [724] of your [5216] goods [5224], knowing [1097] in [1722] yourselves [1438] that ye have [2192] in [1722] heaven [3772] a better [2909] and [2532] an enduring [3306] substance [5223].
28 Likewise [3668] also [2532] as [5613] it was [1096] in [1722] the days [2250] of Lot [3091]; they did eat [2068], they drank [4095], they bought [59], they sold [4453], they planted [5452], they builded [3618];
1 Behold, the LORD [03068] maketh the earth [0776] empty [01238], and maketh it waste [01110], and turneth [05753] it upside down [06440], and scattereth abroad [06327] the inhabitants [03427] thereof.
2 And it shall be, as with the people [05971], so with the priest [03548]; as with the servant [05650], so with his master [0113]; as with the maid [08198], so with her mistress [01404]; as with the buyer [07069], so with the seller [04376]; as with the lender [03867], so with the borrower [03867]; as with the taker of usury [05383], so [0834] with the giver of usury [05378] to him.
10 As [5613] sorrowful [3076], yet [1161] alway [104] rejoicing [5463]; as [5613] poor [4434], yet [1161] making [4148] many [4183] rich [4148]; as [5613] having [2192] nothing [3367], and [2532] yet possessing [2722] all things [3956].
