Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly--The apostle encourages the Romans to persevere in resisting the wiles of the devil with the assurance that, as good soldiers of Jesus Christ, they are "shortly" to receive their discharge, and have the satisfaction of "putting their feet upon the neck" of that formidable enemy--symbol familiar, probably, in all languages to express not only the completeness of the defeat, but the abject humiliation of the conquered foe. (See Jos 10:24; Sa2 22:41; Eze 21:29; Psa 91:13). Though the apostle here styles Him who is thus to bruise Satan, the God of peace," with special reference to the "divisions" (Rom 16:17) by which the church at Rome was in danger of being disturbed, this sublime appellation of God has here a wider sense, pointing to the whole "purpose for which the Son of God was manifested, to destroy the works of the devil" (Jo1 3:8); and indeed this assurance is but a reproduction of the first great promise, that the Seed of the woman should bruise the Serpent's head (Gen 3:15).
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen--The "Amen" here has no manuscript authority. What comes after this, where one would have expected the epistle to close, has its parallel in Phi 4:20, &c., and being in fact common in epistolary writings, is simply a mark of genuineness. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And the God of peace - The God who promotes peace; Rom 15:33.
Will bruise - The "language" here refers to the prediction in Gen 3:15. It here means to "subdue, to gain the victory over." It denotes Paul's confidence that they "would" gain the victory, and would be able to overcome all the arts of those who were endeavoring to sow discord and contention among them.
Satan - The word "Satan" is Hebrew, meaning originally "an accuser, a calumniator," and then "an enemy." It is given to the prince of evil spirits from this enmity to God and human beings. He is here regarded as the "author" of all attempts to promote discord in the church, by whomsoever those attempts were made. Hence, they who attempt to produce divisions are called "his ministers;" Co2 11:15. God would disappoint their malignant purposes, and promote the prevalence of peace.
The grace - The favor; the mercy, etc. The Lord Jesus is the Prince of peace (Isa 9:6; compare Luk 2:14; Joh 14:27), and this expression is "a prayer" to him, or an earnest wish expressed, that the design of his coming might be accomplished in promoting the prevalence of order and peace; compare Co1 16:23; Rev 22:21. |

Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
And the God of peace - The Author and Lover of it, giving a blessing to your discretion. Shall bruise Satan under your feet - Shall defeat all the artifices of that sower of tares, and unite you more and more together in love. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The God of peace - Who neither sends nor favors such disturbers of the tranquillity of his Church.
Shall bruise Satan - Shall give you the dominion over the great adversary of your souls, and over all his agents who, through his influence, endeavor to destroy your peace and subvert your minds.
Several critics suppose that the word Satan is a sort of collective term here, by which all opposers and adversaries are meant; and especially those false teachers to whom he refers above.
The grace of our Lord - That you may be truly wise simple, obedient, and steady in the truth, may the favor or gracious influence of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you! without which you cannot be preserved from evil, nor do any thing that is good.
Here the apostle appears to have intended to conclude his epistle; but afterwards he added a postscript, if not two, as we shall see below. Several ancient MSS. omit the whole of this clause, probably thinking that it had been borrowed from Rom 16:24; but on the ground that the apostle might have added a postscript or two, not having immediate opportunity to send the epistle there is no need for this supposition. |
20 Now [1161] unto God [2316] and [2532] our [2257] Father [3962] be glory [1391] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165]. Amen [281].
15 And I will put [07896] enmity [0342] between thee and the woman [0802], and between thy seed [02233] and her seed [02233]; it shall bruise [07779] thy head [07218], and thou shalt bruise [07779] his heel [06119].
8 He that committeth [4160] sin [266] is [2076] of [1537] the devil [1228]; for [3754] the devil [1228] sinneth [264] from [575] the beginning [746]. For [1519] this purpose [5124] the Son [5207] of God [2316] was manifested [5319], that [2443] he might destroy [3089] the works [2041] of the devil [1228].
17 Now [1161] I beseech [3870] you [5209], brethren [80], mark [4648] them which cause [4160] divisions [1370] and [2532] offences [4625] contrary [3844] to the doctrine [1322] which [3739] ye [5210] have learned [3129]; and [2532] avoid [1578] them [575] [846].
13 Thou shalt tread [01869] upon the lion [07826] and adder [06620]: the young lion [03715] and the dragon [08577] shalt thou trample under feet [07429].
29 Whiles they see [02372] vanity [07723] unto thee, whiles they divine [07080] a lie [03577] unto thee, to bring [05414] thee upon the necks [06677] of them that are slain [02491], of the wicked [07563], whose day [03117] is come [0935], when [06256] their iniquity [05771] shall have an end [07093].
41 Thou hast also given [05414] me the necks [06203] of mine enemies [0341], that I might destroy [06789] them that hate [08130] me.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out [03318] those kings [04428] unto Joshua [03091], that Joshua [03091] called [07121] for all the men [0376] of Israel [03478], and said [0559] unto the captains [07101] of the men [0582] of war [04421] which went [01980] with him, Come near [07126], put [07760] your feet [07272] upon the necks [06677] of these kings [04428]. And they came near [07126], and put [07760] their feet [07272] upon the necks [06677] of them.
21 The grace [5485] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] be with [3326] you [5216] all [3956]. Amen [281].
23 The grace [5485] of our Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] be with [3326] you [5216].
27 Peace [1515] I leave [863] with you [5213], my [1699] peace [1515] I give [1325] unto you [5213]: not [3756] as [2531] the world [2889] giveth [1325], give [1325] I [1473] unto you [5213]. Let [5015] not [3361] your [5216] heart [2588] be troubled [5015], neither [3366] let it be afraid [1168].
14 Glory [1391] to God [2316] in [1722] the highest [5310], and [2532] on [1909] earth [1093] peace [1515], good will [2107] toward [1722] men [444].
6 For unto us a child [03206] is born [03205], unto us a son [01121] is given [05414]: and the government [04951] shall be upon his shoulder [07926]: and his name [08034] shall be called [07121] Wonderful [06382], Counsellor [03289], The mighty [01368] God [0410], The everlasting [05703] Father [01], The Prince [08269] of Peace [07965].
15 Therefore [3767] it is no [3756] great thing [3173] if [1499] his [846] ministers [1249] also [1499] be transformed [3345] as [5613] the ministers [1249] of righteousness [1343]; whose [3739] end [5056] shall be [2071] according [2596] to their [846] works [2041].
15 And I will put [07896] enmity [0342] between thee and the woman [0802], and between thy seed [02233] and her seed [02233]; it shall bruise [07779] thy head [07218], and thou shalt bruise [07779] his heel [06119].
33 Now [1161] the God [2316] of peace [1515] be with [3326] you [5216] all [3956]. Amen [281].
39 And [2532], lo [2400], a spirit [4151] taketh [2983] him [846], and [2532] he suddenly [1810] crieth out [2896]; and [2532] it teareth [4682] him [846] that he foameth [876] again [3326], and [2532] bruising [4937] him [846] hardly [3425] departeth [672] from [575] him [846].
4 Because [1223] that he [846] had been often [4178] bound [1210] with fetters [3976] and [2532] chains [254], and [2532] the chains [254] had been plucked asunder [1288] by [5259] him [846], and [2532] the fetters [3976] broken in pieces [4937]: neither [2532] could [2480] any man tame [1150] him [846] [3762].
24 The grace [5485] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] be with [3326] you [5216] all [3956]. Amen [281].
