In the Sermon on the Mount the benediction is pronounced upon the "poor in spirit" and those who "hunger and thirst after righteousness" (Mat 5:3, Mat 5:6). Here it is simply on the "poor" and the "hungry now." In this form of the discourse, then, our Lord seems to have had in view "the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love Him," as these very beatitudes are paraphrased by James (Jam 2:5).

Matthew has expressed more fully what Luke has briefly, but there is no contradiction. Luk 6:24-26 These verses have been omitted by Matthew. They seem to have been spoken to the Pharisees. Who are rich - In this world's goods. They loved them; they had sought for them; they found their consolation in them. It implies, farther, that they would not seek or receive consolation from the gospel. They were proud, and would not seek it; satisfied, and did not desire it; filled with cares, and had no time or disposition to attend to it. All the consolation which they had reason to expect they had received. Alas! how poor and worthless is such consolation, compared with that which the gospel would give! Woe unto you that are full! - Not hungry. Satisfied with their wealth, and not feeling their need of anything better than earthly wealth can give. Many, alas! are thus "full." They profess to be satisfied. They desire nothing but wealth, and a sufficiency to satisfy the wants of the body. They have no anxiety for the riches that shall endure forever. Ye shall hunger - Your property shall be taken away, or you shall see that it is of little value; and then you shall see the need of something better. You shall feel your want and wretchedness, and shall "hunger" for something to satisfy the desires of a dying, sinful soul. That laugh now - Are happy, or thoughtless, or joyful, or filled with levity. Shall mourn and weep - The time is coming when you shall sorrow deeply. In sickness, in calamity, in the prospect of death, in the fear of eternity, your laughter shall be turned into sorrow. "There is" a place where you cannot laugh, and there you will see the folly of having passed the "proper time" of preparing for such scenes in levity and folly. Alas! how many thus spend their youth! and how many weep when it is too late! God gives them over, and "laughs" at their "calamity," and mocks when their fear comes, Pro 1:26. To be happy in "such scenes," it is necessary to be sober, humble, pious in early life. "Then" we need not weep in the day of calamity; then there will be no terror in death; then there will be nothing to fear in the grave. The kingdom of God in its present development is not identical with the Church. It is a larger movement which includes the Church. The Church is identified with the kingdom to the degree in which it is under the power of the spirit of Christ. "As the Old Testament kingdom of God was perfected and completed when it ceased to be external, and became internal by being enthroned in the heart, so, on the other hand, the perfection of the New Testament kingdom will consist in its complete incarnation and externalization; that is, when it shall attain an outward manifestation, adequately expressing, exactly corresponding to its internal principle" (Tholuck). In the following verses our Lord, in the audience of his newly - chosen disciples, and of the multitude, repeats, standing on the plain, many remarkable passages of the sermon he had before delivered, sitting on the mount. He here again pronounces the poor and the hungry, the mourners, and the persecuted, happy; and represents as miserable those who are rich, and full, and joyous, and applauded: because generally prosperity is a sweet poison, and affliction a healing, though bitter medicine. Let the thought reconcile us to adversity, and awaken our caution when the world smiles upon us; when a plentiful table is spread before us, and our cup is running over; when our spirits are gay; and we hear (what nature loves) our own praise from men. Happy are ye poor - The word seems here to be taken literally: ye who have left al] for me. Mat 5:3.

²⁷ And the kingdom [04437] and dominion [07985], and the greatness [07238] of the kingdom [04437] under [08460] the whole [03606] heaven [08065], shall be given [03052] to the people [05972] of the saints [06922] of the most High [05946], whose kingdom [04437] is an everlasting [05957] kingdom [04437], and all [03606] dominions [07985] shall serve [06399] and obey [08086] him.

²⁰ And [2532] he [846] lifted up [1869] his [846] eyes [3788] on [1519] his [846] disciples [3101], and said [3004], Blessed [3107] be ye poor [4434]: for [3754] yours [5212] is [2076] the kingdom [932] of God [2316].

³ Blessed [3107] are the poor [4434] in spirit [4151]: for [3754] theirs [846] is [2076] the kingdom [932] of heaven [3772].

²¹ Neither [3761] shall they say [2046], Lo [2400] here [5602]! or [2228], lo [2400] there [1563]! for [1063], behold [2400], the kingdom [932] of God [2316] is [2076] within [1787] you [5216].

¹⁶ The law [3551] and [2532] the prophets [4396] were until [2193] John [2491]: since [575] that time [5119] the kingdom [932] of God [2316] is preached [2097], and [2532] every man [3956] presseth [971] into [1519] it [846].

²⁰ But [1161] if [1487] I with [1722] the finger [1147] of God [2316] cast out [1544] devils [1140], no doubt [686] the kingdom [932] of God [2316] is come [5348] upon [1909] you [5209].

⁴⁴ And in the days [03118] of these [0581] kings [04430] shall the God [0426] of heaven [08065] set up [06966] a kingdom [04437], which shall never [05957] [03809] be destroyed [02255]: and the kingdom [04437] shall not [03809] be left [07662] to other [0321] people [05972], but it shall break in pieces [01855] and consume [05487] all [03606] these [0459] kingdoms [04437], and it [01932] shall stand [06966] for ever [05957].

²⁵ That they shall drive [02957] thee from [04481] men [0606], and thy dwelling [04070] shall be [01934] with [05974] the beasts [02423] of the field [01251], and they shall make thee to eat [02939] grass [06211] as oxen [08450], and they shall wet [06647] thee with the dew [02920] of heaven [08065], and seven [07655] times [05732] shall pass [02499] over [05922] thee, till [05705] thou know [03046] that the most High [05943] ruleth [07990] in the kingdom [04437] of men [0606], and giveth [05415] it to whomsoever [04479] he will [06634].

²⁶ But the judgment [01780] shall sit [03488], and they shall take away [05709] his dominion [07985], to consume [08046] and to destroy [07] it unto [05705] the end [05491].
²⁷ And the kingdom [04437] and dominion [07985], and the greatness [07238] of the kingdom [04437] under [08460] the whole [03606] heaven [08065], shall be given [03052] to the people [05972] of the saints [06922] of the most High [05946], whose kingdom [04437] is an everlasting [05957] kingdom [04437], and all [03606] dominions [07985] shall serve [06399] and obey [08086] him.

¹⁰ The sceptre [07626] shall not depart [05493] from Judah [03063], nor a lawgiver [02710] from between his feet [07272], until [03588] Shiloh [07886] come [0935]; and unto him shall the gathering [03349] of the people [05971] be.

⁹ O Zion [06726], that bringest good tidings [01319], get thee up [05927] into the high [01364] mountain [02022]; O Jerusalem [03389], that bringest good tidings [01319], lift up [07311] thy voice [06963] with strength [03581]; lift it up [07311], be not afraid [03372]; say [0559] unto the cities [05892] of Judah [03063], Behold your God [0430]!
