Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Jesus . . . said, &c.--The very same sublime words were uttered by our Lord on a former similar occasion (see on Mat 11:25-27); but (1) There we are merely told that He "answered and said" thus; here, He "rejoiced in spirit and said," &c. (2) There it was merely "at that time" (or season) that He spoke thus, meaning with a general reference to the rejection of His gospel by the self-sufficient; here, "In that hour Jesus said," with express reference probably to the humble class from which He had to draw the Seventy, and the similar class that had chiefly welcomed their message. "Rejoice" is too weak a word. It is "exulted in spirit"--evidently giving visible expression to His unusual emotions; while, at the same time, the words "in spirit" are meant to convey to the reader the depth of them. This is one of those rare cases in which the veil is lifted from off the Redeemer's inner man, that, angel-like, we may "look into it" for a moment (Pe1 1:12). Let us gaze on it with reverential wonder, and as we perceive what it was that produced that mysterious ecstasy, we shall find rising in our hearts a still rapture--"Oh, the depths!" |

Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Lord of heaven and earth - In both of which thy kingdom stands, and that of Satan is destroyed. That thou hast hid these things - He rejoiced not in the destruction of the wise and prudent, but in the display of the riches of God's grace to others, in such a manner as reserves to Him the entire glory of our salvation, and hides pride from man. Mat 11:25. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Rejoiced in spirit - Was truly and heartily joyous: felt an inward triumph. But τῳ πνευματι, τῳ ἁγιῳ, the Holy Spirit, is the reading here of BCDKL, six others; the three Syriac, later Persic, Coptic, Ethiopic, Armenian, Vulgate, all the Itala except one, and Augustin and Bede. These might be considered sufficient authority to admit the word into the text.
I thank thee - Bishop Pearce justly observes, the thanks are meant to be given to God for revealing them to babes, not for hiding them from the others. See on Mat 11:25 (note).
Thou hast hid - That is, thou hast not revealed them to the scribes and Pharisees, who idolized their own wisdom; but thou hast revealed them to the simple and humble of heart. |
12 Unto whom [3739] it was revealed [601], that [3754] not [3756] unto themselves [1438], but [1161] unto us [2254] they did minister [1247] the things [846], which [3739] are [312] now [3568] reported [312] unto you [5213] by [1223] them that have preached the gospel [2097] unto you [5209] with [1722] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] sent down [649] from [575] heaven [3772]; which things [3739] the angels [32] desire [1937] to look [3879] into [1519].
25 At [1722] that [1565] time [2540] Jesus [2424] answered [611] and said [2036], I thank [1843] thee [4671], O Father [3962], Lord [2962] of heaven [3772] and [2532] earth [1093], because [3754] thou hast hid [613] these things [5023] from [575] the wise [4680] and [2532] prudent [4908], and [2532] hast revealed [601] them [846] unto babes [3516].
26 Even so [3483], Father [3962]: for [3754] so [3779] it seemed [1096] good [2107] in thy [4675] sight [1715].
27 All things [3956] are delivered [3860] unto me [3427] of [5259] my [3450] Father [3962]: and [2532] no man [3762] knoweth [1921] the Son [5207], but [1508] the Father [3962]; neither [3761] knoweth [1921] any man [5100] the Father [3962], save [1508] the Son [5207], and he [2532] to [3739] whomsoever [1437] the Son [5207] will [1014] reveal [601] him.
17 For [1063] verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] many [4183] prophets [4396] and [2532] righteous [1342] men have desired [1937] to see [1492] those things which [3739] ye see [991], and [2532] have [1492] not [3756] seen [1492] them; and [2532] to hear [191] those things which [3739] ye hear [191], and [2532] have [191] not [3756] heard [191] them.
16 But [1161] blessed [3107] are your [5216] eyes [3788], for [3754] they see [991]: and [2532] your [5216] ears [3775], for [3754] they hear [191].
25 And [2532], behold [2400], a certain [5100] lawyer [3544] stood up [450], and [2532] tempted [1598] him [846], saying [3004], Master [1320], what [5101] shall I do [4160] to inherit [2816] eternal [166] life [2222]?
25 At [1722] that [1565] time [2540] Jesus [2424] answered [611] and said [2036], I thank [1843] thee [4671], O Father [3962], Lord [2962] of heaven [3772] and [2532] earth [1093], because [3754] thou hast hid [613] these things [5023] from [575] the wise [4680] and [2532] prudent [4908], and [2532] hast revealed [601] them [846] unto babes [3516].
6 Wherein [1722] [3739] ye greatly rejoice [21], though now [737] for a season [3641], if [1487] need [1163] be [2076], ye are in heaviness [3076] through [1722] manifold [4164] temptations [3986]:
25 At [1722] that [1565] time [2540] Jesus [2424] answered [611] and said [2036], I thank [1843] thee [4671], O Father [3962], Lord [2962] of heaven [3772] and [2532] earth [1093], because [3754] thou hast hid [613] these things [5023] from [575] the wise [4680] and [2532] prudent [4908], and [2532] hast revealed [601] them [846] unto babes [3516].
