A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head--Few as there were of the scribes who attached themselves to Jesus, it would appear, from his calling Him Teacher, that this one was a "disciple" in that looser sense of the word in which it is applied to the crowds who flocked after Him, with more or less conviction that His claims were well founded. But from the answer which he received we are led to infer that there was more of transient emotion--of temporary impulse--than of intelligent principle in the speech. The preaching of Christ had riveted and charmed him; his heart had swelled; his enthusiasm had been kindled; and in this state of mind he will go anywhere with Him, and feels impelled to tell Him so. "Wilt thou?" replies the Lord Jesus. "Knowest thou whom thou art pledging thyself to follow, and whither haply He may lead thee? No warm home, no downy pillow has He for thee: He has them not for Himself. The foxes are not without their holes, nor do the birds of the air lack their nests; but the Son of man has to depend on the hospitality of others, and borrow the pillow whereon He lays His head." How affecting is this reply! And yet He rejects not this man's offer, nor refuses him the liberty to follow Him. Only He will have him know what he is doing, and "count the cost." He will have him weigh well the real nature and the strength of his attachment, whether it be such as will abide in the day of trial. If so, he will be right welcome, for Christ puts none away. But it seems too plain that in this case that had not been done. And so we have called this the Rash or Precipitate Disciple.

II. The Procrastinating or Entangled Disciple (Mat 8:21-22).

As this is more fully given in Luke (Luk 9:59), we must take both together. "And He said unto another of His disciples, Follow Me. But he said,"

Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead--or, as more definitely in Luke, "Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God" (Luk 9:60). This disciple did not, like the former, volunteer his services, but is called by the Lord Jesus, not only to follow, but to preach Him. And he is quite willing; only he is not ready just yet. "Lord, I will; but"--"There is a difficulty in the way just now; but that once removed, I am Thine." What now is this difficulty? Was his father actually dead--lying a corpse--having only to be buried? Impossible. As it was the practice, as noticed on Luk 7:12, to bury on the day of death, it is not very likely that this disciple would have been here at all if his father had just breathed his last; nor would the Lord, if He was there, have hindered him discharging the last duties of a son to a father. No doubt it was the common case of a son having a frail or aged father, not likely to live long, whose head he thinks it his duty to see under the ground ere he goes abroad. "This aged father of mine will soon be removed; and if I might but delay till I see him decently interred, I should then be free to preach the kingdom of God wherever duty might call me." This view of the case will explain the curt reply, "Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God." Like all the other paradoxical sayings of our Lord, the key to it is the different senses--a higher and a lower--in which the same word "dead" is used: There are two kingdoms of God in existence upon earth; the kingdom of nature, and the kingdom of grace: To the one kingdom all the children of this world, even the most ungodly, are fully alive; to the other, only the children of light: The reigning irreligion consists not in indifference to the common humanities of social life, but to things spiritual and eternal: Fear not, therefore, that your father will in your absence be neglected, and that when he breathes his last there will not be relatives and friends ready enough to do to him the last offices of kindness. Your wish to discharge these yourself is natural, and to be allowed to do it a privilege not lightly to be foregone. But the kingdom of God lies now all neglected and needy: Its more exalted character few discern; to its paramount claims few are alive: and to "preach" it fewer still are qualified and called: But thou art: The Lord therefore hath need of thee: Leave, then, those claims of nature, high though they be, to those who are dead to the still higher claims of the kingdom of grace, which God is now erecting upon earth--Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And so have we here the genuine, but Procrastinating or Entangled Disciple.

The next case is recorded only by Luke:

III. The Irresolute or Wavering Disciple (Luk 9:61-62)

Luk 9:61 :

And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house.

Luk 9:62 :

And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. But for the very different replies given, we should hardly have discerned the difference between this and the second case: the one man called, indeed, and the other volunteering, as did the first; but both seemingly alike willing, and only having a difficulty in their way just at that moment. But, by help of what is said respectively to each, we perceive the great difference between the two cases. From the warning given against "looking back," it is evident that this man's discipleship was not yet thorough, his separation from the world not entire. It is not a case of going back, but of looking back; and as there is here a manifest reference to the case of "Lot's wife" (Gen 19:26; and see on Luk 17:32), we see that it is not actual return to the world that we have here to deal with, but a reluctance to break with it. The figure of putting one's hand to the plough and looking back is an exceedingly vivid one, and to an agricultural people most impressive. As ploughing requires an eye intent on the furrow to be made, and is marred the instant one turns about, so will they come short of salvation who prosecute the work of God with a distracted attention, a divided heart. The reference may be chiefly to ministers; but the application at least is general. As the image seems plainly to have been suggested by the case of Elijah and Elisha, a difficulty may be raised, requiring a moment's attention. When Elijah cast his mantle about Elisha, which the youth quite understood to mean appointing him his successor, he was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, the last pair held by himself. Leaving his oxen, he ran after the prophet, and said, "Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and [then] I will follow thee." Was this said in the same spirit with the same speech uttered by our disciple? Let us see. "And Elijah said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee." Commentators take this to mean that Elijah had really done nothing to hinder him from going on with all his ordinary duties. But to us it seems clear that Elijah's intention was to try what manner of spirit the youth was of:--"Kiss thy father and mother? And why not? By all means, go home and stay with them; for what have I done to thee? I did but throw a mantle about thee; but what of that?" If this was his meaning, Elisha thoroughly apprehended and nobly met it. "He returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen (the wood of his ploughing implements), and gave unto the people, and they did eat: then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him" (Kg1 19:19-21). We know not if even his father and mother had time to be called to this hasty feast. But this much is plain, that, though in affluent circumstances, he gave up his lower calling, with all its prospects, for the higher and at that time perilous, office to which he was called. What now is the bearing of these two cases? Did Elisha do wrong in bidding them farewell with whom he was associated in his early calling? Or, if not, would this disciple have done wrong if he had done the same thing, and in the same spirit, with Elisha? Clearly not. Elisha's doing it proved that he could with safety do it; and our Lord's warning is not against bidding them farewell which were at home at his house, but against the probable fatal consequences of that step; lest the embraces of earthly relationship should prove too strong for him, and he should never return to follow Christ. Accordingly, we have called this the Irresolute or Wavering Disciple.

19 So he departed [03212] thence, and found [04672] Elisha [0477] the son [01121] of Shaphat [08202], who was plowing [02790] with twelve [08147] [06240] yoke [06776] of oxen before [06440] him, and he with the twelfth [08147] [06240]: and Elijah [0452] passed [05674] by him, and cast [07993] his mantle [0155] upon him.
20 And he left [05800] the oxen [01241], and ran [07323] after [0310] Elijah [0452], and said [0559], Let me, I pray thee, kiss [05401] my father [01] and my mother [0517], and then I will follow [03212] [0310] thee. And he said [0559] unto him, Go back [03212] again [07725]: for what have I done [06213] to thee?
21 And he returned back [07725] from him [0310], and took [03947] a yoke [06776] of oxen [01241], and slew [02076] them, and boiled [01310] their flesh [01320] with the instruments [03627] of the oxen [01241], and gave [05414] unto the people [05971], and they did eat [0398]. Then he arose [06965], and went [03212] after [0310] Elijah [0452], and ministered [08334] unto him.
32 Remember [3421] Lot's [3091] wife [1135].
26 But his wife [0802] looked back [05027] from behind him [0310], and she became a pillar [05333] of salt [04417].
62 And [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto [4314] him [846], No man [3762], having put [1911] his [846] hand [5495] to [1909] the plough [723], and [2532] looking [991] back [1519] [3694], is [2076] fit [2111] for [1519] the kingdom [932] of God [2316].
61 And [1161] another [2087] also [2532] said [2036], Lord [2962], I will follow [190] thee [4671]; but [1161] let [2010] me [3427] first [4412] go bid them farewell [657], which are at home at [1519] my [3450] house [3624].
61 And [1161] another [2087] also [2532] said [2036], Lord [2962], I will follow [190] thee [4671]; but [1161] let [2010] me [3427] first [4412] go bid them farewell [657], which are at home at [1519] my [3450] house [3624].
12 Now [1161] when [5613] he came nigh [1448] to the gate [4439] of the city [4172], behold [2532] [2400], there was [1580] a dead man [2348] carried out [1580], the only [3439] son [5207] of his [846] mother [3384], and [2532] she [846] was [2258] a widow [5503]: and [2532] much [2425] people [3793] of the city [4172] was [2258] with [4862] her [846].
60 [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto him [846], Let [863] the dead [3498] bury [2290] their [1438] dead [3498]: but [1161] go [565] thou [4771] and preach [1229] the kingdom [932] of God [2316].
59 And [1161] he said [2036] unto [4314] another [2087], Follow [190] me [3427]. But [1161] he said [2036], Lord [2962], suffer [2010] me [3427] first [4412] to go [565] and bury [2290] my [3450] father [3962].
21 And [1161] another [2087] of his [846] disciples [3101] said [2036] unto him [846], Lord [2962], suffer [2010] me [3427] first [4412] to go [565] and [2532] bury [2290] my [3450] father [3962].
22 But [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto him [846], Follow [190] me [3427]; and [2532] let [863] the dead [3498] bury [2290] their [1438] dead [3498].
7 Awake [05782], O sword [02719], against my shepherd [07462], and against the man [01397] that is my fellow [05997], saith [05002] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]: smite [05221] the shepherd [07462], and the sheep [06629] shall be scattered [06327]: and I will turn [07725] mine hand [03027] upon the little ones [06819].
2 And a man [0376] shall be as an hiding place [04224] from the wind [07307], and a covert [05643] from the tempest [02230]; as rivers [06388] of water [04325] in a dry place [06724], as the shadow [06738] of a great [03515] rock [05553] in a weary [05889] land [0776].
6 For unto us a child [03206] is born [03205], unto us a son [01121] is given [05414]: and the government [04951] shall be upon his shoulder [07926]: and his name [08034] shall be called [07121] Wonderful [06382], Counsellor [03289], The mighty [01368] God [0410], The everlasting [05703] Father [01], The Prince [08269] of Peace [07965].
7 Of the increase [04766] of his government [04951] and peace [07965] there shall be no end [07093], upon the throne [03678] of David [01732], and upon his kingdom [04467], to order [03559] it, and to establish [05582] it with judgment [04941] and with justice [06666] from henceforth even for [05704] ever [05769]. The zeal [07068] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] will perform [06213] this.
14 Therefore the Lord [0136] himself shall give [05414] you a sign [0226]; Behold, a virgin [05959] shall conceive [02030], and bear [03205] a son [01121], and shall call [07121] his name [08034] Immanuel [06005] [0410].
17 Let thy hand [03027] be upon the man [0376] of thy right hand [03225], upon the son [01121] of man [0120] whom thou madest strong [0553] for thyself.
4 What is man [0582], that thou art mindful [02142] of him? and the son [01121] of man [0120], that thou visitest [06485] him?
3 And I will bless [01288] them that bless [01288] thee, and curse [0779] him that curseth [07043] thee: and in thee shall all families [04940] of the earth [0127] be blessed [01288].
15 And I will put [07896] enmity [0342] between thee and the woman [0802], and between thy seed [02233] and her seed [02233]; it shall bruise [07779] thy head [07218], and thou shalt bruise [07779] his heel [06119].
26 And God [0430] said [0559], Let us make [06213] man [0120] in our image [06754], after our likeness [01823]: and let them have dominion [07287] over the fish [01710] of the sea [03220], and over the fowl [05775] of the air [08064], and over the cattle [0929], and over all the earth [0776], and over every creeping thing [07431] that creepeth [07430] upon the earth [0776].
22 For [1063] [3761] the Father [3962] judgeth [2919] no man [3762], but [235] hath committed [1325] all [3956] judgment [2920] unto the Son [5207]:
23 That [2443] all [3956] men should honour [5091] the Son [5207], even as [2531] they honour [5091] the Father [3962]. He that honoureth [5091] not [3361] the Son [5207] honoureth [5091] not [3756] the Father [3962] which [3588] hath sent [3992] him [846].
24 Verily [281], verily [281], I say [3004] unto you [5213], [3754] He that heareth [191] my [3450] word [3056], and [2532] believeth [4100] on him that sent [3992] me [3165], hath [2192] everlasting [166] life [2222], and [2532] shall [2064] not [3756] come [2064] into [1519] condemnation [2920]; but [235] is passed [3327] from [1537] death [2288] unto [1519] life [2222].
25 Verily [281], verily [281], I say [3004] unto you [5213], [3754] The hour [5610] is coming [2064], and [2532] now [3568] is [2076], when [3753] the dead [3498] shall hear [191] the voice [5456] of the Son [5207] of God [2316]: and [2532] they that hear [191] shall live [2198].
26 For [1063] as [5618] the Father [3962] hath [2192] life [2222] in [1722] himself [1438]; so [2532] [3779] hath he given [1325] to the Son [5207] to have [2192] life [2222] in [1722] himself [1438];
27 And [2532] hath given [1325] him [846] authority [1849] to execute [4160] judgment [2920] also [2532], because [3754] he is [2076] the Son [5207] of man [444].
23 And [2532] when he [846] was entered [1684] into [1519] a ship [4143], his [846] disciples [3101] followed [190] him [846].
5 These [5128] twelve [1427] Jesus [2424] sent forth [649], and commanded [3853] them [846], saying [3004], Go [565] not [3361] into [1519] the way [3598] of the Gentiles [1484], and [2532] into [1519] any city [4172] of the Samaritans [4541] enter ye [1525] not [3361]:
6 But [1161] go [4198] rather [3123] to [4314] the lost [622] sheep [4263] of the house [3624] of Israel [2474].
40 Be [1096] ye [5210] therefore [3767] ready [2092] also [2532]: for [3754] [3739] the Son [5207] of man [444] cometh [2064] at an hour [5610] when ye think [1380] not [3756].
37 But [1161] as [5618] the days [2250] of Noe [3575] were, so [3779] shall [2071] also [2532] the coming [3952] of the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071].
38 For [1063] as [5618] in [1722] the days [2250] that were [2258] before [4253] the flood [2627] they were eating [5176] and [2532] drinking [4095], marrying [1060] and [2532] giving in marriage [1547], until [891] the day [2250] that [3739] Noe [3575] entered [1525] into [1519] the ark [2787],
39 And [2532] knew [1097] not [3756] until [2193] the flood [2627] came [2064], and [2532] took [142] them all [537] away [142]; so [3779] shall [2071] also [2532] the coming [3952] of the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071].
40 Then [5119] shall [2071] two [1417] be [2071] in [1722] the field [68]; the one [1520] shall be taken [3880], and [2532] the other [1520] left [863].
41 Two [1417] women shall be grinding [229] at [1722] the mill [3459]; the one [3391] shall be taken [3880], and [2532] the other [3391] left [863].
42 Watch [1127] therefore [3767]: for [3754] ye know [1492] not [3756] what [4169] hour [5610] your [5216] Lord [2962] doth come [2064].
43 But [1161] know [1097] this [1565], that [3754] if [1487] the goodman of the house [3617] had known [1492] in what [4169] watch [5438] the thief [2812] would come [2064], he would [302] have watched [1127], and [2532] would [302] not [3756] have suffered [1439] his [846] house [3614] to be broken up [1358].
44 Therefore [1223] [5124] be [1096] ye [5210] also [2532] ready [2092]: for [3754] in such [3739] an hour [5610] as ye think [1380] not [3756] the Son [5207] of man [444] cometh [2064].
2 Ye know [1492] that [3754] after [3326] two [1417] days [2250] is [1096] the feast of the passover [3957], and [2532] the Son [5207] of man [444] is betrayed [3860] to [1519] be crucified [4717].
18 Behold [2400], we go up [305] to [1519] Jerusalem [2414]; and [2532] the Son [5207] of man [444] shall be betrayed [3860] unto the chief priests [749] and [2532] unto the scribes [1122], and [2532] they shall condemn [2632] him [846] to death [2288],
40 For [1063] as [5618] Jonas [2495] was [2258] three [5140] days [2250] and [2532] three [5140] nights [3571] in [1722] the whale's [2785] belly [2836]; so [3779] shall the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071] three [5140] days [2250] and [2532] three [5140] nights [3571] in [1722] the heart [2588] of the earth [1093].
10 For [1063] the Son [5207] of man [444] is come [2064] to seek [2212] and [2532] to save [4982] that which was lost [622].
19 The Son [5207] of man [444] came [2064] eating [2068] and [2532] drinking [4095], and [2532] they say [3004], Behold [2400] a man [444] gluttonous [5314], and [2532] a winebibber [3630], a friend [5384] of publicans [5057] and [2532] sinners [268]. But [2532] wisdom [4678] is justified [1344] of [575] her [846] children [5043].
45 And [2532] so [3779] it is written [1125], The first [4413] man [444] Adam [76] was made [1096] [1519] a living [2198] soul [5590]; the last [2078] Adam [76] was made [1519] a quickening [2227] spirit [4151].
46 Howbeit [235] that was not [3756] first [4412] which is spiritual [4152], but [235] that which is natural [5591]; and afterward [1899] that which is spiritual [4152].
47 The first [4413] man [444] is of [1537] the earth [1093], earthy [5517]: the second [1208] man [444] is the Lord [2962] from [1537] heaven [3772].
1 And he said [0559] unto me, Son [01121] of man [0120], stand [05975] upon thy feet [07272], and I will speak [01696] unto thee.
58 And [2532] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto him [846], Foxes [258] have [2192] holes [5454], and [2532] birds [4071] of the air [3772] have nests [2682]; but [1161] the Son [5207] of man [444] hath [2192] not [3756] where [4226] to lay [2827] his head [2776].
13 I saw [01934] [02370] in the night [03916] visions [02376], and, behold [0718], one like the Son [01247] of man [0606] came [0858] with [05974] the clouds [06050] of heaven [08065], and came [04291] to [05705] the Ancient [06268] of days [03118], and they brought him near [07127] before [06925] him.
5 For thou hast made him a little [04592] lower [02637] than the angels [0430], and hast crowned [05849] him with glory [03519] and honour [01926].
