Many will say to me in that day--What day? It is emphatically unnamed. But it is the day to which He had just referred, when men shall "enter" or not enter "into the kingdom of heaven." (See a similar way of speaking of "that day" in Ti2 1:12; Ti2 4:8). Lord, Lord--The reiteration denotes surprise. "What, Lord? How is this? Are we to be disowned?" have we not prophesied--or, "publicly taught." As one of the special gifts of the Spirit in the early Church, it has the sense of "inspired and authoritative teaching," and is ranked next to the apostleship. (See Co1 12:28; Eph 4:11). In this sense it is used here, as appears from what follows. in thy name--or, "to thy name," and so in the two following clauses--"having reference to Thy name as the sole power in which we did it." and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works--or, miracles. Devils devils, lit demons. To the reality and personality of demons the New Testament scriptures bear abundant testimony. As to their origin nothing is clearly revealed, but they are not to be confounded with the angels mentioned in (Pe2 2:4); (Jde 1:6). Summary: Demons are spirits (Mat 12:43); (Mat 12:45) are Satan's emissaries; (Mat 12:26-27); (Mat 25:41) and so numerous as to make Satan's power practically ubiquitous. (Mar 5:9). They are capable of entering and controlling both men and beasts (Mar 5:8); (Mar 5:11-13) and earnestly seek embodiment, without which, apparently, they are powerless for evil. (Mat 12:43-44); (Mar 5:10-12). Demon influence and demon possession are discriminated in the New Testament instances of the latter are; (Mat 4:24); (Mat 8:16); (Mat 8:28); (Mat 8:33); (Mat 9:32); (Mat 12:22); (Mar 1:32); (Mar 5:15-16); (Mar 5:18); (Luk 8:35); (Act 8:7); (Act 16:16). They are unclean, sullen, violent, and malicious; (Mat 8:28); (Mat 9:23); (Mat 10:1); (Mat 12:43); (Mar 1:23); (Mar 5:3-5); (Mar 9:17); (Mar 9:20); (Luk 6:18); (Luk 9:39). They know Jesus Christ as Most High God, and recognize His supreme authority; (Mat 8:31-32); (Mar 1:24); (Act 19:15); (Jam 2:19). They know their eternal fate to be one of torment; (Mat 8:29); (Luk 8:31). They inflict physical maladies; (Mat 12:22); (Mat 17:15-18); (Luk 13:16), but mental disease is to be distinguished from the disorder of mind due to demonical control. Demon influence may manifest itself in religion asceticism and formalism (Ti1 4:1-3) degenerating into uncleanness (Pe2 2:10-12). The sign of demon influence in religion is departing from the faith, that is, the body of revealed truth in the Scriptures. (Ti1 4:1). The demons maintain especially a conflict with believers who would be spiritual. (Eph 6:12); (Ti1 4:1-3). All unbelievers are open to demon possession (Eph 2:2). The believer's resources, prayer and bodily control (Mat 17:21) "the whole armour of God" (Eph 6:13-18). Exorcism in the name of Jesus Christ (Act 16:18) was practised for demon possession. One of the awful features of the apocalyptic judgments in which this age will end is an irruption of demons out the abyss. (Rev 9:1-11).

Have we not (οὐ) That form of the negative is used which expects an affirmative answer. It therefore pictures both the self-conceit and the self-deception of these persons. "Surely we have prophesied," etc.

¹² And [2532] all [3956] the devils [1142] besought [3870] him [846], saying [3004], Send [3992] us [2248] into [1519] the swine [5519], that [2443] we may enter [1525] into [1519] them [846].

⁴³ [1161] When [3752] the unclean [169] spirit [4151] is gone [1831] out of [575] a man [444], he walketh [1330] through [1223] dry [504] places [5117], seeking [2212] rest [372], and [2532] findeth [2147] none [3756].
⁴⁴ Then [5119] he saith [3004], I will return [1994] into [1519] my [3450] house [3624] from whence [3606] I came out [1831]; and [2532] when he is come [2064], he findeth [2147] it empty [4980], swept [4563], and [2532] garnished [2885].

¹³ And [2532] forthwith [2112] Jesus [2424] gave [2010] them [846] leave [2010]. And [2532] the unclean [169] spirits [4151] went out [1831], and entered [1525] into [1519] the swine [5519]: and [2532] the herd [34] ran [3729] violently down [2596] a steep place [2911] into [1519] the sea [2281], [1161] (they were [2258] about [5613] two thousand [1367];) and [2532] were choked [4155] in [1722] the sea [2281].

⁸ For [1063] he said [3004] unto him [846], Come [1831] out of [1537] the man [444], thou unclean [169] spirit [4151].

⁹ And [2532] he asked [1905] him [846], What [5101] is thy [4671] name [3686]? And [2532] he answered [611], saying [3004], My [3427] name [3686] is Legion [3003]: for [3754] we are [2070] many [4183].

²⁷ And [2532] if [1487] I [1473] by [1722] Beelzebub [954] cast out [1544] devils [1140], by [1722] whom [5101] do your [5216] children [5207] cast them out [1544]? therefore [5124] [1223] they [846] shall be [2071] your [5216] judges [2923].

⁴⁵ Then [5119] goeth he [4198], and [2532] taketh [3880] with [3326] himself [1438] seven [2033] other [2087] spirits [4151] more wicked [4191] than himself [1438], and [2532] they enter in [1525] and dwell [2730] there [1563]: and [2532] the last [2078] state of that [1565] man [444] is [1096] worse than [5501] the first [4413]. Even so [3779] shall it be [2071] also [2532] unto this [5026] wicked [4190] generation [1074].

⁶ And [5037] the angels [32] which kept [5083] not [3361] their [1438] first estate [746], but [235] left [620] their own [2398] habitation [3613], he hath reserved [5083] in everlasting [126] chains [1199] under [5259] darkness [2217] unto [1519] the judgment [2920] of the great [3173] day [2250].

⁴ For [1063] if [1487] God [2316] spared [5339] not [3756] the angels [32] that sinned [264], but [235] cast them down to hell [5020], and delivered [3860] them into chains [4577] of darkness [2217], to be reserved [5083] unto [1519] judgment [2920];
