Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them--astonished at such a spectacle.
O generation of vipers--"Viper brood," expressing the deadly influence of both sects alike upon the community. Mutually and entirely antagonistic as were their religious principles and spirit, the stem prophet charges both alike with being the poisoners of the nation's religious principles. In Mat 12:34; Mat 23:33, this strong language of the Baptist is anew applied by the faithful and true Witness to the Pharisees specifically--the only party that had zeal enough actively to diffuse this poison.
who hath warned you--given you the hint, as the idea is.
to flee from the wrath to come?--"What can have brought you hither?" John more than suspected it was not so much their own spiritual anxieties as the popularity of his movement that had drawn them thither. What an expression is this, "The wrath to come!" God's "wrath," in Scripture, is His righteous displeasure against sin, and consequently against all in whose skirts sin is found, arising out of the essential and eternal opposition of His nature to all moral evil. This is called "the coming wrath," not as being wholly future--for as a merited sentence it lies on the sinner already, and its effects, both inward and outward, are to some extent experienced even now--but because the impenitent sinner will not, until "the judgment of the great day," be concluded under it, will not have sentence publicly and irrevocably passed upon him, will not have it discharged upon him and experience its effects without mixture and without hope. In this view of it, it is a wrath wholly to come, as is implied in the noticeably different form of the expression employed by the apostle in Th1 1:10. Not that even true penitents came to John's baptism with all these views of "the wrath to come." But what he says is that this was the real import of the step itself. In this view of it, how striking is the word he employs to express that step--fleeing from it--as of one who, beholding a tide of fiery wrath rolling rapidly towards him, sees in instant flight his only escape! |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Pharisees and Sadducees - The Jews were divided into three great sects - the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes. In addition to these, some smaller sects are mentioned in the New Testament and by Josephus: the Herodians, probably political friends of Herod; the Galileans, a branch of the Pharisees; and the Therapeutae, a branch of the Essenes, but converts from the Greeks. The three principal sects are supposed to have originated about 150 years before Christ, as they are mentioned by Josephus at that time in his history. Of course nothing is said of them in the Old Testament, as that was finished about 400 years before the Christian era.
I. The Pharisees were the most numerous and wealthy sect of the Jews. They derived their name from the Hebrew word Pharash, which signifies to set apart, or to separate, because they separated themselves from the rest of their countrymen, and professedly devoted themselves to special strictness in religion. Their leading tenets were the following: that the world was governed by fate, or by a fixed decree of God; that the souls of men were immortal, and were either eternally happy or miserable beyond the grave; that the dead would be raised; that there were angels, good and bad; that God was under obligation to bestow special favor on the Jews; and that they were justified by their own conformity to the law. They were proud, haughty, self-righteous, and held the common people in great disrespect, Joh 7:49. They sought the offices of the state, and affected great dignity. They were ostentatious in their religious worship, praying in the corners of the streets, and seeking publicity in the bestowment of alms. They sought principally external cleanliness, and dealt much in ceremonial ablutions and washing.
They maintained some of the laws of Moses very strictly. In addition to the written laws, they held to a multitude which they maintained had come down from Moses by tradition. These they felt themselves as much bound to observe as the written Law. Under the influence of these laws they washed themselves before meals with great scrupulousness; they fasted twice a week - on Thursday, when they supposed that Moses ascended Mount Sinai, and on Monday, when he descended; they wore broad phylacteries, and enlarged the fringe or borders of their garments; they loved the chief rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues. In general, they were a corrupt, hypocritical, office-seeking, haughty class of men. There are, however, some honorable exceptions recorded, Act 5:34; perhaps, also, Mar 15:43; Luk 2:25; Luk 23:51; Joh 19:38-42; Joh 3:1; Joh 7:50.
II. The Sadducees are supposed to have taken their name from Sadok, who flourished about 260 years before the Christian era. He was a pupil of Antigonus Sochaeus, president of the sanhedrin, or great council of the nation. He had taught the duty of serving God disinterestedly, without the hope of reward or the fear of punishment. Sadok, not properly understanding the doctrine of his master, drew the inference that there was no future state of rewards or punishments, and on this belief he founded the sect. The other notions which they held, all to be traced to this leading doctrine, were:
1. That there is no resurrection, neither angel nor spirit Mat 22:23; Act 23:8; and that the soul of man perishes with the body.
2. They rejected the doctrine of fate or decrees.
3. They rejected all traditions, and professed to receive only the books of the Old Testament. They were far less numerous than the Pharisees, but their want of numbers was compensated, in some degree, by their wealth and standing in society. Though they did not generally seek office, yet several of them were advanced to the high priesthood.
III. The Essenes, a third sect of the Jews, are not mentioned in the New Testament. They differed from both the Pharisees and the Sadducees. They were Jewish monks or hermits, passing their time little in society, but mostly in places of obscurity and retirement. It is not probable, therefore, that our Saviour often, if ever, encountered them; and this, it is supposed, is the reason why they are not mentioned in the New Testament. They were a contemplative sect, having little to do with the common business of life. The property which they possessed they held in common. They denied themselves, in a great measure, the usual comforts of life, and were exceedingly strict in the observance of the duties of religion. They were generally more pure than the rest of the Jews, and appear to have been an unambitious, a modest, and retiring sort of people. The two sexes were not in company except on the Sabbath, when they partook of their coarse fare (only bread and salt) together. They practiced dancing in their worship. Few of them were married; they were opposed to oaths, and they asserted that slavery was repugnant to nature. In regard to doctrine, they did not differ materially from the Pharisees, except that they objected to the sacrifices of slain animals, and of course did not visit the temple, and were not, therefore, likely to come into public contact with the Saviour. They perpetuated their sect by proselytes, and by taking orphan children to train up.
The other sects of the Jews were too insignificant to demand any particular notice here. It may be said of the Jews generally that they possessed little of the spirit of religion; that they had corrupted some of the most important doctrines of the Bible; and that they were an ignorant, proud, ambitious, and sensual people. There as great propriety, therefore, in John's proclaiming to them the necessity of repentance.
Generation of vipers - Vipers are a species of serpents, from 2 to 5 feet in length and about an inch thick, with a flat head. They are of an ash or yellowish color, speckled with long brown spots. There is no serpent that is more poisonous. The person bitten by them swells up almost immediately, and falls down dead. See Act 28:6. The word "serpent," or "viper," is used to denote both cunning and malignancy. In the phrase "be ye wise as serpents" Mat 10:16 it means be prudent, or wise, referring to the account in Gen 3:1-6. Among the Jews the serpent was regarded as the symbol of cunning, circumspection, and prudence. It was so regarded in the Egyptian hieroglyphics. In the phrase "generation of vipers" Mat 12:34, the viper is the symbol of wickedness, of envenomed malice - a symbol drawn from the venom of the serpent. It is not quite certain in which of these senses the phrase is used in this place. Probably it is used to denote their malignancy and wickedness.
Wrath to come - John expresses his astonishment that sinners so hardened and so hypocritical as they were should have been induced to flee from coming wrath. The wrath to come means the divine indignation, or the punishment that will come on the guilty. See Th1 1:10; Th2 1:8-9. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
Pharisees
So called from a Hebrew, word meaning "separate." After the ministry of the post-exilic prophets ceased, godly men called "Chasidim" (saints) arose who sought to keep alive reverence for the law amongst the descendants of the Jews who returned from the Babylonian captivity. This movement degenerated into the Pharisaism of our Lord's day -- a letter-strictness which overlaid the law with traditional interpretations held to have been communicated by Jehovah to Moses as oral explanations of equal authority with the law itself.
Compare (Mat 15:2-3); (Mar 7:8-13); (Gal 1:14).
The Pharisees were strictly a sect. A member was "chaber" (i.e. "knit together,") (Jdg 20:11) and took an obligation to remain true to the principles of Pharisaism. They were correct, moral, zealous, and self-denying, but self-righteous (Luk 18:9) and destitute of the sense of sin and need (Luk 7:39). They were the foremost prosecutors of Jesus Christ and the objects of His unsparing denunciation (for example); (Mat 23:13-29); (Luk 11:42-43).
Sadducees
Not strictly a sect, but rather those amongst the Jews who denied the existence of angels or other spirits, and all miracles, especially the resurrection. They were the religious rationalists of the time (Mar 12:18-23); (Act 5:15-17); (Act 23:8) and strongly entrenched in the Sanhedrin and priesthood; (Act 4:1); (Act 5:17). They are identified with no affirmative doctrine, but were mere deniers of the supernatural. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The Pharisees were a very ancient sect among the Jews. They took their name from a Hebrew word, which signifies to separate, because they separated themselves from all other men. They were outwardly strict observers of the law, fasted often, made long prayers, rigorously kept the Sabbath, and paid all tithe, even of mint, anise, and cummin. Hence they were in high esteem among the people. But inwardly, they were full of pride and hypocrisy. The Sadducees were another sect among the Jews, only not so considerable as the Pharisees. They denied the existence of angels, and the immortality of the soul, and by consequence the resurrection of the dead. Ye brood of vipers - In like manner, the crafty Herod is styled a fox, and persons of insidious, ravenous, profane, or sensual dispositions, are named respectively by him who saw their hearts, serpents, dogs, wolves, and swine; terms which are not the random language of passion, but a judicious designation of the persons meant by them. For it was fitting such men should be marked out, either for a caution to others, or a warning to themselves. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Pharisees - A very numerous sect among the Jews, who, in their origin, were, very probably, a pure and holy people. It is likely that they got the name of Pharisees, i.e. Separatists, (from פרש pharash, to separate), from their separating themselves from the pollution of the Jewish national worship; and hence, the word in the Anglo-saxon version is, holy persons who stand apart, or by themselves: but, in process of time, like all religious sects and parties, they degenerated: they lost the spirit of their institution, they ceased to recur to first principles, and had only the form of godliness, when Jesus Christ preached in Judea; for he bore witness, that they did make the outside of the cup and platter clean - they observed the rules of their institution, but the spirit was gone.
Sadducees - A sect who denied the existence of angels and spirits, consequently all Divine influence and inspiration, and also the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees of that time were the Materialists and Deists of the Jewish nation. When the sect of the Pharisees arose cannot be distinctly ascertained; but it is supposed to have been some time after the Babylonish captivity. The sect of the Sadducees were the followers of one Sadok, a disciple of Antigonus Sochaeus, who flourished about three centuries before Christ. There was a third sect among the Jews, called the Essenes or Essenians, of whom I shall have occasion to speak on Mat 19:12.
Come to his baptism - The Ethiopic version adds the word privately here, the translator probably having read λαθρα in his copy, which gives a very remarkable turn to the passage. The multitudes, who had no worldly interest to support, no character to maintain by living in their usual way, came publicly, and openly acknowledged that they were Sinners; and stood in need of mercy. The others, who endeavored to secure their worldly interests by making a fair show in the flesh, are supposed to have come privately, that they might not be exposed to reproach; and that they might not lose their reputation for wisdom and sanctity, which their consciences, under the preaching of the Baptist, told them they had no right to. See below.
O generation of vipers - Γεννηματα εχιδνων. A terribly expressive speech. A serpentine brood, from a serpentine stock. As their fathers were, so were they, children of the wicked one. This is God's estimate of a Sinner, whether he wade in wealth, or soar in fame. The Jews were the seed of the serpent, who should bruise the heel of the woman's seed, and whose head should be bruised by him.
Who hath warned you - Or, privately shown you. Τις υπεδιξεν - from υπο, under, and δεικνυμαι, to show. Does not this seem to allude to the reading of the Ethiopic noticed above? They came privately: and John may be supposed to address them thus: "Did any person give you a private warning? No, you received your convictions under the public ministry of the word. The multitudes of the poor and wretched, who have been convinced of sin, have publicly acknowledged their crimes, and sought mercy - God will unmask you - you have deceived the people - you have deceived yourselves - you must appear just what you are; and, if you expect mercy from God, act like the penitent multitude, and bring forth Fruit worthy of repentance. Do not begin to trifle with your convictions, by thinking, that because you are descendants of Abraham, therefore you are entitled to God's favor; God can, out of these stones (pointing probably to those scattered about in the desert, which he appears to have considered as an emblem of the Gentiles) raise up a faithful seed, who, though not natural descendants of your excellent patriarch, yet shall be his worthy children, as being partakers of his faith, and friends of his God." It should be added, that the Greek word also signifies plain or ample information. See on Luk 6:47 (note).
The wrath to come? - The desolation which was about to fall on the Jewish nation for their wickedness, and threatened in the last words of their own Scriptures. See Mal 4:6. Lest I come and smite the earth את הארץ (et ha-arets, this very land) with a curse. This wrath or curse was coming: they did not prevent it by turning to God, and receiving the Messiah, and therefore the wrath of God came upon them to the uttermost. Let him that readeth understand. |
10 And [2532] to wait for [362] his [846] Son [5207] from [1537] heaven [3772], whom [3739] he raised [1453] from [1537] the dead [3498], even Jesus [2424], which [3588] delivered [4506] us [2248] from [575] the wrath [3709] to come [2064].
33 Ye serpents [3789], ye generation [1081] of vipers [2191], how [4459] can ye [5343] escape [575] the damnation [2920] of hell [1067]?
34 O generation [1081] of vipers [2191], how [4459] can ye [1410], being [5607] evil [4190], speak [2980] good things [18]? for [1063] out of [1537] the abundance [4051] of the heart [2588] the mouth [4750] speaketh [2980].
8 In [1722] flaming [5395] fire [4442] taking [1325] vengeance [1557] on them that know [1492] not [3361] God [2316], and [2532] that obey [5219] not [3361] the gospel [2098] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547]:
9 Who [3748] shall be punished [1349] [5099] with everlasting [166] destruction [3639] from [575] the presence [4383] of the Lord [2962], and [2532] from [575] the glory [1391] of his [846] power [2479];
34 O generation [1081] of vipers [2191], how [4459] can ye [1410], being [5607] evil [4190], speak [2980] good things [18]? for [1063] out of [1537] the abundance [4051] of the heart [2588] the mouth [4750] speaketh [2980].
1 Now the serpent [05175] was [01961] more subtil [06175] than any beast [02416] of the field [07704] which the LORD [03068] God [0430] had made [06213]. And he said [0559] unto the woman [0802], Yea [0637], hath God [0430] said [0559], Ye shall not eat [0398] of every tree [06086] of the garden [01588]?
2 And the woman [0802] said [0559] unto the serpent [05175], We may eat [0398] of the fruit [06529] of the trees [06086] of the garden [01588]:
3 But of the fruit [06529] of the tree [06086] which is in the midst [08432] of the garden [01588], God [0430] hath said [0559], Ye shall not eat [0398] of it, neither shall ye touch [05060] it, lest [06435] ye die [04191].
4 And the serpent [05175] said [0559] unto the woman [0802], Ye shall not surely [04191] die [04191]:
5 For God [0430] doth know [03045] that in the day [03117] ye eat [0398] thereof, then your eyes [05869] shall be opened [06491], and ye shall be as gods [0430], knowing [03045] good [02896] and evil [07451].
6 And when the woman [0802] saw [07200] that the tree [06086] was good [02896] for food [03978], and that it [01931] was pleasant [08378] to the eyes [05869], and a tree [06086] to be desired [02530] to make one wise [07919], she took [03947] of the fruit thereof [06529], and did eat [0398], and gave [05414] also [01571] unto her husband [0376] with her; and he did eat [0398].
16 Behold [2400], I [1473] send [649] you [5209] forth [649] as [5613] sheep [4263] in [1722] the midst [3319] of wolves [3074]: be ye [1096] therefore [3767] wise [5429] as [5613] serpents [3789], and [2532] harmless [185] as [5613] doves [4058].
6 Howbeit [1161] they looked [4328] when he [846] should [3195] have swollen [4092], or [2228] fallen down [2667] dead [3498] suddenly [869]: but [1161] after they [846] had looked [4328] a great while [1909] [4183], and [2532] saw [2334] no [3367] harm [824] come [1096] to [1519] him [846], they changed their minds [3328], and said [3004] that he [846] was [1511] a god [2316].
8 For [1063] [3303] the Sadducees [4523] say [3004] that there is [1511] no [3361] resurrection [386], neither [3366] angel [32], nor [3383] spirit [4151]: but [1161] the Pharisees [5330] confess [3670] both [297].
23 The same [1722] [1565] day [2250] came [4334] to him [846] the Sadducees [4523], which [3588] say [3004] that there is [1511] no [3361] resurrection [386], and [2532] asked [1905] him [846],
50 Nicodemus [3530] saith [3004] unto [4314] them [846], (he that came [2064] to Jesus [846] by [4314] night [3571], being [5607] one [1520] of [1537] them [846],)
1 [1161] There was [2258] a man [444] of [1537] the Pharisees [5330], named [3686] [846] Nicodemus [3530], a ruler [758] of the Jews [2453]:
38 And [1161] after [3326] this [5023] Joseph [2501] of [575] Arimathaea [707], being [5607] a disciple [3101] of Jesus [2424], but [1161] secretly [2928] for [1223] fear [5401] of the Jews [2453], besought [2065] Pilate [4091] that [2443] he might take away [142] the body [4983] of Jesus [2424]: and [2532] Pilate [4091] gave him leave [2010]. He came [2064] therefore [3767], and [2532] took [142] the body [4983] of Jesus [2424].
39 And [1161] there came [2064] also [2532] Nicodemus [3530], which [3588] at the first [4412] came [2064] to [4314] Jesus [2424] by night [3571], and brought [5342] a mixture [3395] of myrrh [4666] and [2532] aloes [250], about [5616] an hundred [1540] pound [3046] weight.
40 Then [3767] took they [2983] the body [4983] of Jesus [2424], and [2532] wound [1210] it [846] in linen clothes [3608] with [3326] the spices [759], as [2531] the manner [1485] of the Jews [2453] is [2076] to bury [1779].
41 Now [1161] in [1722] the place [5117] where [3699] he was crucified [4717] there was [2258] a garden [2779]; and [2532] in [1722] the garden [2779] a new [2537] sepulchre [3419], wherein [1722] [3739] was [5087] never [3764] man [3762] yet [3764] laid [5087].
42 There [1563] laid they [5087] Jesus [2424] therefore [3767] because [1223] of the Jews [2453]' preparation [3904] day; for [3754] the sepulchre [3419] was [2258] nigh at hand [1451].
51 (The same [3778] had [4784] not [3756] consented [4784] [2258] to the counsel [1012] and [2532] deed [4234] of them [846];) he was of [575] Arimathaea [707], a city [4172] of the Jews [2453]: [2532] who [3739] also [2532] himself [846] waited for [4327] the kingdom [932] of God [2316].
25 And [2532], behold [2400], there was [2258] a man [444] in [1722] Jerusalem [2419], whose [3739] name [3686] was Simeon [4826]; and [2532] the same [3778] man [444] was just [1342] and [2532] devout [2126], waiting [4327] for the consolation [3874] of Israel [2474]: and [2532] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] was [2258] upon [1909] him [846].
43 Joseph [2501] of [575] Arimathaea [707], an honourable [2158] counsellor [1010], which [3739] also [2532] [846] waited [4327] for [2258] the kingdom [932] of God [2316], came [2064], and went in [1525] boldly [5111] unto [4314] Pilate [4091], and [2532] craved [154] the body [4983] of Jesus [2424].
34 Then [1161] stood there up [450] one [5100] in [1722] the council [4892], a Pharisee [5330], named [3686] Gamaliel [1059], a doctor of the law [3547], had in reputation [5093] among all [3956] the people [2992], and commanded [2753] to put [4160] the apostles [652] forth [1854] a [5100] little space [1024];
49 But [235] this [3778] people [3793] who [3588] knoweth [1097] not [3361] the law [3551] are [1526] cursed [1944].
17 Then [1161] the high priest [749] rose up [450], and [2532] all they [3956] that were with [4862] him [846], (which [3588] is [5607] the sect [139] of the Sadducees [4523],) and were filled [4130] with indignation [2205],
1 And [1161] as they [846] spake [2980] unto [4314] the people [2992], the priests [2409], and [2532] the captain [4755] of the temple [2411], and [2532] the Sadducees [4523], came upon [2186] them [846],
8 For [1063] [3303] the Sadducees [4523] say [3004] that there is [1511] no [3361] resurrection [386], neither [3366] angel [32], nor [3383] spirit [4151]: but [1161] the Pharisees [5330] confess [3670] both [297].
15 Insomuch [5620] that they brought forth [1627] the sick [772] into [2596] the streets [4113], and [2532] laid [5087] them on [1909] beds [2825] and [2532] couches [2895], that [2443] at the least [2579] the shadow [4639] of Peter [4074] passing by [2064] might overshadow [1982] some [5100] of them [846].
16 [1161] There came [4905] also [2532] a multitude [4128] out of the cities [4172] round about [4038] unto [1519] Jerusalem [2419], bringing [5342] sick [772] folks, and [2532] them which were vexed [3791] with [5259] unclean [169] spirits [4151]: and they [3748] were healed [2323] every one [537].
17 Then [1161] the high priest [749] rose up [450], and [2532] all they [3956] that were with [4862] him [846], (which [3588] is [5607] the sect [139] of the Sadducees [4523],) and were filled [4130] with indignation [2205],
18 Then [2532] come [2064] unto [4314] him [846] the Sadducees [4523], which [3748] say [3004] there is [1511] no [3361] resurrection [386]; and [2532] they asked [1905] him [846], saying [3004],
19 Master [1320], Moses [3475] wrote [1125] unto us [2254], If [3754] [1437] a man's [5100] brother [80] die [599], and [2532] leave [2641] his wife [1135] behind him, and [2532] leave [863] no [3361] children [5043], that [2443] his [846] brother [80] should take [2983] his [846] wife [1135], and [2532] raise up [1817] seed [4690] unto his [846] brother [80].
20 Now there were [2258] seven [2033] brethren [80]: and [2532] the first [4413] took [2983] a wife [1135], and [2532] dying [599] left [863] no [3756] seed [4690].
21 And [2532] the second [1208] took [2983] her [846], and [2532] died [599], [2532] neither [3761] left [863] he [846] any seed [4690]: and [2532] the third [5154] likewise [5615].
22 And [2532] the seven [2033] had [2983] her [846], and [2532] left [863] no [3756] seed [4690]: last [2078] of all [3956] the woman [1135] died [599] also [2532].
23 In [1722] the resurrection [386] therefore [3767], when [3752] they shall rise [450], whose [5101] wife [1135] shall she be [2071] of them [846]? for [1063] the seven [2033] had [2192] her [846] to wife [1135].
42 But [235] woe [3759] unto you [5213], Pharisees [5330]! for [3754] ye tithe [586] mint [2238] and [2532] rue [4076] and [2532] all manner [3956] of herbs [3001], and [2532] pass over [3928] judgment [2920] and [2532] the love [26] of God [2316]: these [5023] ought ye [1163] to have done [4160], and not [3361] to leave [863] the other [2548] undone [863].
43 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], Pharisees [5330]! for [3754] ye love [25] the uppermost seats [4410] in [1722] the synagogues [4864], and [2532] greetings [783] in [1722] the markets [58].
13 But [1161] woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye shut up [2808] the kingdom [932] of heaven [3772] against [1715] men [444]: for [1063] ye [5210] neither [3761] go in [1525] yourselves, neither [3756] suffer ye [863] them that are entering [1525] to go in [1525].
14 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye devour [2719] widows [5503]' houses [3614], and [2532] for a pretence [4392] make [4336] long [3117] prayer [4336]: therefore [1223] [5124] ye shall receive [2983] the greater [4055] damnation [2917].
15 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye compass [4013] sea [2281] and [2532] land [3584] to make [4160] one [1520] proselyte [4339], and [2532] when [3752] he is made [1096], ye make [4160] him [846] twofold more [1362] the child [5207] of hell [1067] than yourselves [5216].
16 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], ye blind [5185] guides [3595], which [3588] say [3004], Whosoever [3739] [302] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the temple [3485], it is [2076] nothing [3762]; but [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the gold [5557] of the temple [3485], he is a debtor [3784] !
17 Ye fools [3474] and [2532] blind [5185]: for [1063] whether [5101] is [2076] greater [3187], the gold [5557], or [2228] the temple [3485] that sanctifieth [37] the gold [5557]?
18 And [2532], Whosoever [3739] [1437] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the altar [2379], it is [2076] nothing [3762]; but [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] sweareth [3660] by [1722] the gift [1435] that is upon [1883] it [846], he is guilty [3784].
19 Ye fools [3474] and [2532] blind [5185]: for [1063] whether [5101] is greater [3187], the gift [1435], or [2228] the altar [2379] that sanctifieth [37] the gift [1435]?
20 Whoso therefore [3767] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the altar [2379], sweareth [3660] by [1722] it [846], and [2532] by [1722] all things [3956] thereon [1883] [846].
21 And [2532] whoso shall swear [3660] by [1722] the temple [3485], sweareth [3660] by [1722] it [846], and [2532] by [1722] him that dwelleth [2730] therein [846].
22 And [2532] he that shall swear [3660] by [1722] heaven [3772], sweareth [3660] by [1722] the throne [2362] of God [2316], and [2532] by [1722] him that sitteth [2521] thereon [1883] [846].
23 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye pay tithe [586] of mint [2238] and [2532] anise [432] and [2532] cummin [2951], and [2532] have omitted [863] the weightier [926] matters of the law [3551], judgment [2920], [2532] mercy [1656], and [2532] faith [4102]: these [5023] ought ye [1163] to have done [4160], and not [3361] to leave [863] the other [2548] undone [863].
24 Ye blind [5185] guides [3595], which strain at [1368] a gnat [2971], and [1161] swallow [2666] a camel [2574].
25 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye make clean [2511] the outside [1855] of the cup [4221] and [2532] of the platter [3953], but [1161] within [2081] they are full [1073] of [1537] extortion [724] and [2532] excess [192].
26 Thou blind [5185] Pharisee [5330], cleanse [2511] first [4412] that which is within [1787] the cup [4221] and [2532] platter [3953], that [2443] the outside [1622] of them [846] may be [1096] clean [2513] also [2532].
27 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye are like [3945] unto whited [2867] sepulchres [5028], which [3748] indeed [3303] appear [5316] beautiful [5611] outward [1855], but [1161] are within [2081] full [1073] of dead [3498] men's bones [3747], and [2532] of all [3956] uncleanness [167].
28 Even so [3779] ye [5210] also [2532] [3303] outwardly [1855] appear [5316] righteous [1342] unto men [444], but [1161] within [2081] ye are [2075] full [3324] of hypocrisy [5272] and [2532] iniquity [458].
29 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! because [3754] ye build [3618] the tombs [5028] of the prophets [4396], and [2532] garnish [2885] the sepulchres [3419] of the righteous [1342],
39 Now [1161] when the Pharisee [5330] which [3588] had bidden [2564] him [846] saw [1492] it, he spake [2036] within [1722] himself [1438], saying [3004], This man [3778], if [1487] he were [2258] a prophet [4396], [302] would have known [1097] who [5101] and [2532] what manner [4217] of woman [1135] this is that [3748] toucheth [680] him [846]: for [3754] she is [2076] a sinner [268].
9 And [1161] he spake [2036] [2532] this [5026] parable [3850] unto [4314] certain [5100] which [3588] trusted [3982] in [1909] themselves [1438] that [3754] they were [1526] righteous [1342], and [2532] despised [1848] others [3062]:
11 So all the men [0376] of Israel [03478] were gathered [0622] against the city [05892], knit together [02270] as one [0259] man [0376].
14 And [2532] profited [4298] in [1722] the Jews' religion [2454] above [5228] many [4183] my equals [4915] in [1722] mine own [3450] nation [1085], being [5225] more exceedingly [4056] zealous [2207] of the traditions [3862] of my [3450] fathers [3967].
8 For [1063] laying aside [863] the commandment [1785] of God [2316], ye hold [2902] the tradition [3862] of men [444], as the washing [909] of pots [3582] and [2532] cups [4221]: and [2532] many [4183] other [243] such [5108] like things [3946] ye do [4160].
9 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], Full well [2573] ye reject [114] the commandment [1785] of God [2316], that [2443] ye may keep [5083] your own [5216] tradition [3862].
10 For [1063] Moses [3475] said [2036], Honour [5091] thy [4675] father [3962] and [2532] thy [4675] mother [3384]; and [2532], Whoso curseth [2551] father [3962] or [2228] mother [3384], let him die [5053] the death [2288]:
11 But [1161] ye [5210] say [3004], If [1437] a man [444] shall say [2036] to his father [3962] or [2228] mother [3384], It is Corban [2878], that is to say [3603], a gift [1435], by [1537] whatsoever [3739] [1437] thou mightest be profited by [5623] me [1700]; he shall be free.
12 And [2532] ye suffer [863] him [846] no more [3765] to do [4160] ought [3762] for his [846] father [3962] or [2228] his [846] mother [3384];
13 Making [208] the word [3056] of God [2316] of none effect [208] through your [5216] tradition [3862], which [3739] ye have delivered [3860]: and [2532] many [4183] such [5108] like things [3946] do ye [4160].
2 Why [1302] do thy [4675] disciples [3101] transgress [3845] the tradition [3862] of the elders [4245]? for [1063] they wash [3538] not [3756] their [846] hands [5495] when [3752] they eat [2068] bread [740].
3 But [1161] he answered [611] and said [2036] unto them [846], Why [1302] do ye [5210] also [2532] transgress [3845] the commandment [1785] of God [2316] by [1223] your [5216] tradition [3862]?
6 And he shall turn [07725] the heart [03820] of the fathers [01] to the children [01121], and the heart [03820] of the children [01121] to their fathers [01], lest I come [0935] and smite [05221] the earth [0776] with a curse [02764].
47 Whosoever [3956] cometh [2064] to [4314] me [3165], and [2532] heareth [191] my [3450] sayings [3056], and [2532] doeth [4160] them [846], I will shew [5263] you [5213] to whom [5101] he is [2076] like [3664]:
12 For [1063] there are [1526] some eunuchs [2135], which [3748] were so [3779] born [1080] from [1537] their mother's [3384] womb [2836]: and [2532] there are [1526] some eunuchs [2135], which [3748] were made eunuchs [2134] of [5259] men [444]: and [2532] there be [1526] eunuchs [2135], which [3748] have made [2134] themselves [1438] eunuchs [2134] for [1223] the kingdom [932] of heaven's sake [3772]. He that is able [1410] to receive [5562] it, let him receive [5562] it.
