Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus--From this it is clear that the genealogy here given is not that of Mary, but of Joseph; nor has this ever been questioned. And yet it is here studiously proclaimed that Joseph was not the natural, but only the legal father of our Lord. His birth of a virgin was known only to a few; but the acknowledged descent of his legal father from David secured that the descent of Jesus Himself from David should never be questioned. See on Mat 1:20.
who is called Christ--signifying "anointed." It is applied in the Old Testament to the kings (Sa1 24:6, Sa1 24:10); to the priests (Lev 4:5, Lev 4:16, &c.); and to the prophets (Kg1 19:16) --these all being anointed will oil, the symbol of the needful spiritual gifts to consecrate them to their respective offices; and it was applied, in its most sublime and comprehensive sense, to the promised Deliverer, inasmuch as He was to be consecrated to an office embracing all three by the immeasurable anointing of the Holy Ghost (Isa 61:1; compare Joh 3:34). |

Six Marys
Six Marys are to be distinguished in the New Testament:
(1) the mother of Jesus; always clearly identified by the context.
(2) Mary Magdalene, a woman of Magdala, "out of whom went seven demons" (Luk 8:2) She is never mentioned apart from the identifying word "Magdalene."
(3) The mother of James (called "the less," (Mar 15:40) and Joses, the apostles. A comparison of; (Joh 19:25); (Mat 27:56); (Mar 15:40) establishes the inference that this Mary, the mother of James the less, and of Joses was the wife of Alphaeus (called also Cleophas), (Joh 19:25) and a sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. Except in; (Mat 27:61); (Mat 28:1) where she is called "the other Mary (that is, "other" than her sister, Mary the Virgin); and (Joh 19:25) where she is called "of Cleophas," she is mentioned only in connection with one or both of her sons.
(4) Mary of Bethany, sister of Martha and Lazarus, mentioned by name only in (Luk 10:39-42); (Joh 11:1-2); (Joh 11:19); (Joh 11:20); (Joh 11:28); (Joh 11:31); (Joh 11:32); (Joh 11:45); (Joh 12:3) but referred to in (Mat 26:7); (Mar 14:3-9).
(5) The mother of John Mark and sister of Barnabas (Act 12:12).
(6) A helper of Paul in Rome (Rom 16:6).
of whom was born
The changed expression here is important. It is no longer, "who begat," but, "Mary, of whom was born Jesus." Jesus was not begotten of natural generation.
Christ
Christ (Greel, "Christos", means "anointed"), the Greek form of the Hebrew, "Messiah" (Dan 9:25-26) is the official name of our Lord, as Jesus is his human name; (Luk 1:31); (Luk 2:21). The name, or title, "Christ" connects Him with the entire Old Testament foreview
(See Scofield) - (Zac 12:8)
of a coming prophet (Deu 18:15-19); Priest (Psa 110:4) and king (Sa2 7:7-10). As these were typically anointed with oil; (Kg1 19:16); (Exo 29:7); (Sa1 16:13) so Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit; (Mat 3:16); (Mar 1:10-11); (Luk 3:21-22); (Joh 1:32-33) thus becoming officially "the Christ." |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The husband of Mary - Jesus was generally believed to be the son of Joseph. It was needful for all who believed this, to know, that Joseph was sprung from David. Otherwise they would not allow Jesus to be the Christ. Jesus, who is called Christ - The name Jesus respects chiefly the promise of blessing made to Abraham: the name Christ, the promise of the Messiah's kingdom, which was made to David. It may be farther observed, that the word Christ in Greek, and Messiah in Hebrew, signify anointed, and imply the prophetic, priestly, and royal characters, which were to meet in the Messiah. Among the Jews, anointing was the ceremony whereby prophets, priests, and kings were initiated into those offices. And if we look into ourselves, we shall find a want of Christ in all these respects. We are by nature at a distance from God, alienated from him, and incapable of a free access to him. Hence we want a mediator, an intercessor, in a word, a Christ, in his priestly office. This regards our state with respect to God. And with respect to ourselves, we find a total darkness, blindness, ignorance of God, and the things of God. Now here we want Christ in his prophetic office, to enlighten our minds, and teach us the whole will of God. We find also within us a strange misrule of appetites and passions. For these we want Christ in his royal character, to reign in our hearts, and subdue all things to himself. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Jesus, who is called Christ - As the word Χριστος Christ, signifies the anointed or anointer, from χριω, to anoint, it answers exactly to the Hebrew משיח mashiach, which we pronounce Messiah or Messias; this word comes from the root משח mashac, signifying the same thing. As the same person is intended by both the Hebrew and Greek appellation, it should be regularly translated The Messiah, or The Christ; whichever is preferred, the demonstrative article should never be omitted.
Priests, prophets, and kings, among the Jews, were anointed in order to the legitimate exercise of their respective offices. Hence the word Χριστος Christ, or משיח Mashiach, became a name of dignity, and often signified the same as king. See Isa 45:1; Psa 105:15; Lev 4:3; Lev 6:20; Sa1 2:10. The words משיח Mashiach and מלך melec, Χριστος and βασιλευς, Christ and king, are frequently interchanged. Sa1 2:10; Psa 2:2, Psa 2:6; Luk 23:2; and see the Scholia of Rosenmuller on this place. The reason of this may be seen in the following note, which I extract from the comment on Exo 29:7.
"It appears from Isa 61:1, that anointing with oil, in consecrating a person to any important office, whether civil or religious, was considered as an emblem of the communication of the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit. This ceremony was used on three occasions, viz. the installation of prophets, priests, and kings, into their respective offices. But why should such an anointing be deemed necessary? Because the common sense of men taught them that all good, whether spiritual or secular, must come from God, its origin and cause. Hence it was taken for granted,
1. That no man could foretell events, unless inspired by the Spirit of God. And therefore the prophet was anointed, to signify the communication of the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge.
2. That no person could offer an acceptable sacrifice to God for the sins of men, or profitably minister in holy things, unless enlightened, influenced, and directed, by the Spirit of grace and holiness. Hence the priest was anointed, to signify his being divinely qualified for the due performance of his sacred functions.
3. That no man could enact just and equitable laws, which should have the prosperity of the community and the welfare of the individual continually in view, or could use the power confided to him only for the suppression of vice and the encouragement of virtue, but that man who was ever under the inspiration of the Almighty.
Hence kings were inaugurated by anointing with oil. Two of these offices only exist in all civilized nations, the sacerdotal and regal; and, in some countries, the priest and king are still consecrated by anointing. In the Hebrew language משח mashach signifies to anoint; and משיח mashiach, the anointed person. But as no man was ever dignified by holding the three offices, so no person ever had the title Mashiach, the anointed one, but Jesus, The Christ. He alone is King of kings, and Lord of lords: the king who governs the universe, and rules in the hearts of his followers; the prophet, to instruct men in the way wherein they should go; and the great high priest, to make atonement for their sins. Hence he is called the Messias, a corruption of the word המשיח ha-mashiach, The anointed One, in Hebrew; which gave birth to ὁ Χριστος ho Christos, which has precisely the same signification in Greek: of him, Melchisedeck, Abraham, Aaron, David, and others, were illustrious types. But none of these had the title of The Messiah, or The Anointed of God. This does, and ever will, belong exclusively to Jesus, The Christ." |
34 For [1063] he whom [3739] God [2316] hath sent [649] speaketh [2980] the words [4487] of God [2316]: for [1063] God [2316] giveth [1325] not [3756] the Spirit [4151] by [1537] measure [3358] unto him.
1 The Spirit [07307] of the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] is upon me; because the LORD [03068] hath anointed [04886] me to preach good tidings [01319] unto the meek [06035]; he hath sent [07971] me to bind up [02280] the brokenhearted [07665] [03820], to proclaim [07121] liberty [01865] to the captives [07617], and the opening of the prison [06495] to them that are bound [0631];
16 And Jehu [03058] the son [01121] of Nimshi [05250] shalt thou anoint [04886] to be king [04428] over Israel [03478]: and Elisha [0477] the son [01121] of Shaphat [08202] of Abelmeholah [065] shalt thou anoint [04886] to be prophet [05030] in thy room.
16 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall bring [0935] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818] to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
5 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall take [03947] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818], and bring [0935] it to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
10 Behold, this day [03117] thine eyes [05869] have seen [07200] how that the LORD [03068] had delivered [05414] thee to day [03117] into mine hand [03027] in the cave [04631]: and some bade [0559] me kill [02026] thee: but mine eye spared [02347] thee; and I said [0559], I will not put forth [07971] mine hand [03027] against my lord [0113]; for he is the LORD'S [03068] anointed [04899].
6 And he said [0559] unto his men [0582], The LORD [03068] forbid [02486] that I should do [06213] this thing [01697] unto my master [0113], the LORD'S [03068] anointed [04899], to stretch forth [07971] mine hand [03027] against him, seeing he is the anointed [04899] of the LORD [03068].
20 But [1161] while he [846] thought on [1760] these things [5023], behold [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] appeared [5316] unto him [846] in [2596] a dream [3677], saying [3004], Joseph [2501], thou son [5207] of David [1138], fear [5399] not [3361] to take [3880] unto thee [4675] Mary [3137] thy wife [1135]: for [1063] that which is conceived [1080] in [1722] her [846] is [2076] of [1537] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151].
32 And [2532] John [2491] bare record [3140], saying [3004], [3754] I saw [2300] the Spirit [4151] descending [2597] from [1537] heaven [3772] like [5616] a dove [4058], and [2532] it abode [3306] upon [1909] him [846].
33 And I [2504] knew [1492] him [846] not [3756]: but [235] he that sent [3992] me [3165] to baptize [907] with [1722] water [5204], the same [1565] said [2036] unto me [3427], Upon [1909] whom [3739] [302] thou shalt see [1492] the Spirit [4151] descending [2597], and [2532] remaining [3306] on [1909] him [846], the same [3778] is [2076] he which baptizeth [907] with [1722] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151].
21 Now [1161] when all [537] the people [2992] were baptized [1722] [907], it came to pass [1096], that Jesus [2424] also [2532] being baptized [907], and [2532] praying [4336], the heaven [3772] was opened [455],
22 And [2532] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] descended [2597] in a bodily [4984] shape [1491] like [5616] a dove [4058] upon [1909] him [846], and [2532] a voice [5456] came [1096] from [1537] heaven [3772], which said [3004], Thou [4771] art [1488] my [3450] beloved [27] Son [5207]; in [1722] thee [4671] I am well pleased [2106].
10 And [2532] straightway [2112] coming up [305] out of [575] the water [5204], he saw [1492] the heavens [3772] opened [4977], and [2532] the Spirit [4151] like [5616] a dove [4058] descending [2597] upon [1909] him [846]:
11 And [2532] there came [1096] a voice [5456] from [1537] heaven [3772], saying, Thou [4771] art [1488] my [3450] beloved [27] Son [5207], in [1722] whom [3739] I am well pleased [2106].
16 And [2532] Jesus [2424], when he was baptized [907], went up [305] straightway [2117] out of [575] the water [5204]: and [2532], lo [2400], the heavens [3772] were opened [455] unto him [846], and [2532] he saw [1492] the Spirit [4151] of God [2316] descending [2597] like [5616] a dove [4058], and [2532] lighting [2064] upon [1909] him [846]:
13 Then Samuel [08050] took [03947] the horn [07161] of oil [08081], and anointed [04886] him in the midst [07130] of his brethren [0251]: and the Spirit [07307] of the LORD [03068] came [06743] upon David [01732] from that day [03117] forward [04605]. So Samuel [08050] rose up [06965], and went [03212] to Ramah [07414].
7 Then shalt thou take [03947] the anointing [04888] oil [08081], and pour [03332] it upon his head [07218], and anoint [04886] him.
7 In all the places wherein I have walked [01980] with all the children [01121] of Israel [03478] spake [01696] I a word [01697] with any [0259] of the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478], whom I commanded [06680] to feed [07462] my people [05971] Israel [03478], saying [0559], Why build [01129] ye not me an house [01004] of cedar [0730]?
8 Now therefore so shalt thou say [0559] unto my servant [05650] David [01732], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], I took [03947] thee from the sheepcote [05116], from following [0310] the sheep [06629], to be ruler [05057] over my people [05971], over Israel [03478]:
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest [01980], and have cut off [03772] all thine enemies [0341] out of thy sight [06440], and have made [06213] thee a great [01419] name [08034], like unto the name [08034] of the great [01419] men that are in the earth [0776].
10 Moreover I will appoint [07760] a place [04725] for my people [05971] Israel [03478], and will plant [05193] them, that they may dwell [07931] in a place of their own, and move [07264] no more; neither shall the children [01121] of wickedness [05766] afflict [06031] them any more [03254], as beforetime [07223],
4 The LORD [03068] hath sworn [07650], and will not repent [05162], Thou art a priest [03548] for ever [05769] after the order [01700] of Melchizedek [04442].
15 The LORD [03068] thy God [0430] will raise up [06965] unto thee a Prophet [05030] from the midst [07130] of thee, of thy brethren [0251], like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken [08085];
16 According to all that thou desiredst [07592] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] in Horeb [02722] in the day [03117] of the assembly [06951], saying [0559], Let me not hear [08085] again [03254] the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068] my God [0430], neither let me see [07200] this great [01419] fire [0784] any more, that I die [04191] not.
17 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto me, They have well [03190] spoken that which they have spoken [01696].
18 I will raise them up [06965] a Prophet [05030] from among [07130] their brethren [0251], like unto thee, and will put [05414] my words [01697] in his mouth [06310]; and he shall speak [01696] unto them all that I shall command [06680] him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever [0376] will not hearken [08085] unto my words [01697] which he shall speak [01696] in my name [08034], I will require [01875] it of him.
8 In that day [03117] shall the LORD [03068] defend [01598] the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389]; and he that is feeble [03782] among them at that day [03117] shall be as David [01732]; and the house [01004] of David [01732] shall be as God [0430], as the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] before [06440] them.
21 And [2532] when [3753] eight [3638] days [2250] were accomplished [4130] for the circumcising [4059] of the child [3813], [2532] his [846] name [3686] was called [2564] JESUS [2424], which [3588] was so named [2564] of [5259] the angel [32] before [4253] he [846] was conceived [4815] in [1722] the womb [2836].
31 And [2532], behold [2400], thou shalt conceive [4815] in [1722] thy womb [1064], and [2532] bring forth [5088] a son [5207], and [2532] shalt call [2564] his [846] name [3686] JESUS [2424].
25 Know [03045] therefore and understand [07919], that from the going forth [04161] of the commandment [01697] to restore [07725] and to build [01129] Jerusalem [03389] unto the Messiah [04899] the Prince [05057] shall be seven [07651] weeks [07620], and threescore [08346] and two [08147] weeks [07620]: the street [07339] shall be built [01129] again [07725], and the wall [02742], even in troublous [06695] times [06256].
26 And after [0310] threescore [08346] and two [08147] weeks [07620] shall Messiah [04899] be cut off [03772], but not for himself: and the people [05971] of the prince [05057] that shall come [0935] shall destroy [07843] the city [05892] and the sanctuary [06944]; and the end [07093] thereof shall be with a flood [07858], and unto the end [07093] of the war [04421] desolations [08074] are determined [02782].
6 Greet [782] Mary [3137], who [3748] bestowed [2872] much [4183] labour [2872] on [1519] us [2248].
12 And [5037] when he had considered [4894] the thing, he came [2064] to [1909] the house [3614] of Mary [3137] the mother [3384] of John [2491], whose surname was [1941] Mark [3138]; where [3757] many [2425] were [2258] gathered together [4867] praying [2532] [4336].
3 And [2532] being [846] [5607] in [1722] Bethany [963] in [1722] the house [3614] of Simon [4613] the leper [3015], as he [846] sat at meat [2621], there came [2064] a woman [1135] having [2192] an alabaster box [211] of ointment [3464] of spikenard [3487] [4101] very precious [4185]; and [2532] she brake [4937] the box [211], and poured [2708] it on [2596] his [846] head [2776].
4 And [1161] there were [2258] some [5100] that had indignation [23] within [4314] themselves [1438], and [2532] said [3004], Why [1519] [5101] was [1096] this [3778] waste [684] of the ointment [3464] made [1096]?
5 For [1063] it [5124] might [1410] have been sold [4097] for more than [1883] three hundred [5145] pence [1220], and [2532] have been given [1325] to the poor [4434]. And [2532] they murmured against [1690] her [846].
6 And [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036], Let [863] her [846] alone [863]; why [5101] trouble ye [2873] [3930] her [846]? she hath wrought [2038] a good [2570] work [2041] on [1519] me [1691].
7 For [1063] ye have [2192] the poor [4434] with [3326] you [1438] always [3842], and [2532] whensoever [3752] ye will [2309] ye may [1410] do [4160] them [846] good [2095]: but [1161] me [1691] ye have [2192] not [3756] always [3842].
8 She hath done [4160] what [3739] she [3778] [846] could [2192]: she is come aforehand [4301] to anoint [3462] my [3450] body [4983] to [1519] the burying [1780].
9 Verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Wheresoever [3699] [302] this [5124] gospel [2098] shall be preached [2784] throughout [1519] the whole [3650] world [2889], this also [2532] that [3739] she [3778] [846] hath done [4160] shall be spoken [2980] of for [1519] a memorial [3422] of her [846].
7 There came [4334] unto him [846] a woman [1135] having [2192] an alabaster box [211] of very precious [927] ointment [3464], and [2532] poured it [2708] on [1909] his [846] head [2776], as he sat [345] at meat.
3 Then [3767] took [2983] Mary [3137] a pound [3046] of ointment [3464] of spikenard [3487] [4101], very costly [4186], and anointed [218] the feet [4228] of Jesus [2424], and [2532] wiped [1591] his [846] feet [4228] with her [846] hair [2359]: and [1161] the house [3614] was filled [4137] with [1537] the odour [3744] of the ointment [3464].
45 Then [3767] many [4183] of [1537] the Jews [2453] which [3588] came [2064] to [4314] Mary [3137], and [2532] had seen [2300] the things which [3739] Jesus [2424] did [4160], believed [4100] on [1519] him [846].
32 Then [3767] when [5613] Mary [3137] was come [2064] where [3699] Jesus [2424] was [2258], and saw [1492] him [846], she fell down [4098] at [1519] his [846] feet [4228], saying [3004] unto him [846], Lord [2962], if [1487] thou hadst been [2258] here [5602], my [3450] brother [80] had [302] not [3756] died [599].
31 The Jews [2453] then [3767] which [3588] were [5607] with [3326] her [846] in [1722] the house [3614], and [2532] comforted [3888] her [846], when they saw [1492] Mary [3137], that [3754] she rose up [450] hastily [5030] and [2532] went out [1831], followed [190] her [846], saying [3004], [3754] She goeth [5217] unto [1519] the grave [3419] to [2443] weep [2799] there [1563].
28 And [2532] when she had [2036] so [5023] said [2036], she went her way [565], and [2532] called [5455] Mary [3137] her [846] sister [79] secretly [2977], saying [2036], The Master [1320] is come [3918], and [2532] calleth for [5455] thee [4571].
20 Then [3767] Martha [3136], as soon as [5613] she heard [191] that [3754] Jesus [2424] was coming [2064], went and met [5221] him [846]: but [1161] Mary [3137] sat [2516] still in [1722] the house [3624].
19 And [2532] many [4183] of [1537] the Jews [2453] came [2064] to [4314] Martha [3136] and [2532] Mary [3137] [4012], to [2443] comfort [3888] them [846] concerning [4012] their [846] brother [80].
1 Now [1161] a certain [5100] man was [2258] sick [770], named Lazarus [2976], of [575] Bethany [963], [1537] the town [2968] of Mary [3137] and [2532] her [846] sister [79] Martha [3136].
2 [1161] (It was [2258] that Mary [3137] which [3588] anointed [218] the Lord [2962] with ointment [3464], and [2532] wiped [1591] his [846] feet [4228] with her [846] hair [2359], whose [3739] brother [80] Lazarus [2976] was sick [770]
39 And [2532] she [3592] had [2258] a sister [79] called [2564] Mary [3137], which [3739] also [2532] sat [3869] at [3844] Jesus [2424]' feet [4228], and heard [191] his [846] word [3056].
40 But [1161] Martha [3136] was cumbered [4049] about [4012] much [4183] serving [1248], and [1161] came to him [2186], and said [2036], Lord [2962], dost [3199] thou [4671] not [3756] care [3199] that [3754] my [3450] sister [79] hath left [2641] me [3165] to serve [1247] alone [3441]? bid [2036] her [846] therefore [3767] that [2443] she help [4878] me [3427].
41 And [1161] Jesus [2424] answered [611] and said [2036] unto her [846], Martha [3136], Martha [3136], thou art careful [3309] and [2532] troubled [5182] about [4012] many things [4183]:
42 But [1161] one thing [1520] is [2076] needful [5532]: and [1161] Mary [3137] hath chosen [1586] that good [18] part [3310], which [3748] shall [851] not [3756] be taken away [851] from [575] her [846].
25 Now [1161] there stood [2476] by [3844] the cross [4716] of Jesus [2424] his [846] mother [3384], and [2532] his [846] mother's [3384] sister [79], Mary [3137] the wife [3588] of Cleophas [2832], and [2532] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094].
1 In the end [1161] [3796] of the sabbath [4521], as it began to dawn [2020] toward [1519] the first [3391] day of the week [4521], came [2064] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094] and [2532] the other [243] Mary [3137] to see [2334] the sepulchre [5028].
61 And [1161] there [1563] was [2258] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094], and [2532] the other [243] Mary [3137], sitting [2521] over against [561] the sepulchre [5028].
40 There [1161] were [2258] also [2532] women [1135] looking [2334] on afar [3113] off [575]: among [2532] [1722] whom [3739] was [2258] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094], and [2532] Mary [3137] the mother [3384] of James [2385] the less [3398] and [2532] of Joses [2500], and [2532] Salome [4539];
56 Among [1722] which [3739] was [2258] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094], and [2532] Mary [3137] the mother [3384] of James [2385] and [2532] Joses [2500], and [2532] the mother [3384] of Zebedee's [2199] children [5207].
40 There [1161] were [2258] also [2532] women [1135] looking [2334] on afar [3113] off [575]: among [2532] [1722] whom [3739] was [2258] Mary [3137] Magdalene [3094], and [2532] Mary [3137] the mother [3384] of James [2385] the less [3398] and [2532] of Joses [2500], and [2532] Salome [4539];
2 And [2532] certain [5100] women [1135], which [3739] had been [2258] healed [2323] of [575] evil [4190] spirits [4151] and [2532] infirmities [769], Mary [3137] called [2564] Magdalene [3094], out of [575] whom [3739] went [1831] seven [2033] devils [1140],
1 The Spirit [07307] of the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] is upon me; because the LORD [03068] hath anointed [04886] me to preach good tidings [01319] unto the meek [06035]; he hath sent [07971] me to bind up [02280] the brokenhearted [07665] [03820], to proclaim [07121] liberty [01865] to the captives [07617], and the opening of the prison [06495] to them that are bound [0631];
7 Then shalt thou take [03947] the anointing [04888] oil [08081], and pour [03332] it upon his head [07218], and anoint [04886] him.
2 And [1161] they began [756] to accuse [2723] him [846], saying [3004], We found [2147] this [5126] fellow perverting [1294] the nation [1484], and [2532] forbidding [2967] to give [1325] tribute [5411] to Caesar [2541], saying [3004] that he himself [1438] is [1511] Christ [5547] a King [935].
6 Yet have I set [05258] my king [04428] upon my holy [06944] hill [02022] of Zion [06726].
2 The kings [04428] of the earth [0776] set [03320] themselves, and the rulers [07336] take counsel [03245] together [03162], against the LORD [03068], and against his anointed [04899], saying,
10 The adversaries [07378] of the LORD [03068] shall be broken to pieces [02865]; out of heaven [08064] shall he thunder [07481] upon them: the LORD [03068] shall judge [01777] the ends [0657] of the earth [0776]; and he shall give [05414] strength [05797] unto his king [04428], and exalt [07311] the horn [07161] of his anointed [04899].
20 This is the offering [07133] of Aaron [0175] and of his sons [01121], which they shall offer [07126] unto the LORD [03068] in the day [03117] when he is anointed [04886]; the tenth part [06224] of an ephah [0374] of fine flour [05560] for a meat offering [04503] perpetual [08548], half [04276] of it in the morning [01242], and half [04276] thereof at night [06153].
3 If the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] do sin [02398] according to the sin [0819] of the people [05971]; then let him bring [07126] for his sin [02403], which he hath sinned [02398], a young [01241] [01121] bullock [06499] without blemish [08549] unto the LORD [03068] for a sin offering [02403].
15 Saying, Touch [05060] not mine anointed [04899], and do my prophets [05030] no harm [07489].
1 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] to his anointed [04899], to Cyrus [03566], whose right hand [03225] I have holden [02388], to subdue [07286] nations [01471] before [06440] him; and I will loose [06605] the loins [04975] of kings [04428], to open [06605] before [06440] him the two leaved gates [01817]; and the gates [08179] shall not be shut [05462];
