Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
The Lord make thee a curse, &c.--a usual form of imprecation (Isa 65:15; Jer 29:22). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
An oath - That is, a form of cursing, that when they would curse a person, they may wish that they may be as miserable as thou wast. Thy thigh - A modest expression, used both in scripture, as Gen 46:26, Exo 1:5, and other authors. To rot - Heb. to fall, that is, to die or waste away. To swell - Suddenly and violently till it burst, which the Jews note was frequent in this case. And it was a clear evidence of the truth of their religion. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The Lord make thee a curse and an oath - Let thy name and punishment be remembered and mentioned as an example and terror to all others. Like that mentioned Jer 29:22, Jer 29:23 : "The Lord make thee like Zedekiah, and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire, because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives." - Ainsworth. |
22 And of them shall be taken up [03947] a curse [07045] by all the captivity [01546] of Judah [03063] which are in Babylon [0894], saying [0559], The LORD [03068] make [07760] thee like Zedekiah [06667] and like Ahab [0256], whom the king [04428] of Babylon [0894] roasted [07033] in the fire [0784];
15 And ye shall leave [03240] your name [08034] for a curse [07621] unto my chosen [0972]: for the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] shall slay [04191] thee, and call [07121] his servants [05650] by another [0312] name [08034]:
5 And all the souls [05315] that came out [03318] of the loins [03409] of Jacob [03290] were seventy [07657] souls [05315]: for Joseph [03130] was in Egypt [04714] already.
26 All the souls [05315] that came [0935] with Jacob [03290] into Egypt [04714], which came out [03318] of his loins [03409], besides Jacob's [03290] sons [01121]' wives [0802], all the souls [05315] were threescore [08346] and six [08337];
23 Because they have committed [06213] villany [05039] in Israel [03478], and have committed [06213] adultery [05003] with their neighbours [07453]' wives [0802], and have spoken [01696] lying [08267] words [01697] in my name [08034], which I have not commanded [06680] them; even I know [03045], and am a witness [05707], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
22 And of them shall be taken up [03947] a curse [07045] by all the captivity [01546] of Judah [03063] which are in Babylon [0894], saying [0559], The LORD [03068] make [07760] thee like Zedekiah [06667] and like Ahab [0256], whom the king [04428] of Babylon [0894] roasted [07033] in the fire [0784];
