Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah--rather, "the things of Korah." (See on Num 16:35; compare Psa 106:17). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Together with Korah - i. e., they were engulfed at the same time that Korah perished, for Korah himself appears to bare died among the two hundred and fifty incense offerers at the door of the tabernacle, not with Dathan and Abiram (compare Num 16:32 note). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
With Korah - According to this translation Korah was not consumed by fire with his two hundred and fifty men, but swallowed up by the earth. But others rather think he was devoured by the fire, and render these words, and the things of Korah, or belonging to Korah, namely, his tent and goods, and family, children excepted, as here follows. A sign - God made them a monument or example, to warn others not to rebel against God, or magistracy, nor to usurp the priestly office. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Together with Korah - The Samaritan text does not intimate that Korah was swallowed up, but that he was burnt, as appears in fact to have been the case. And the earth swallowed them up, what time that company died; and the fire devoured Korah with the two hundred and fifty men, who became a sign. |
17 The earth [0776] opened [06605] and swallowed up [01104] Dathan [01885], and covered [03680] the company [05712] of Abiram [048].
35 And there came out [03318] a fire [0784] from the LORD [03068], and consumed [0398] the two hundred [03967] and fifty [02572] men [0376] that offered [07126] incense [07004].
32 And the earth [0776] opened [06605] her mouth [06310], and swallowed them up [01104], and their houses [01004], and all the men [0120] that appertained unto Korah [07141], and all their goods [07399].
