The Revenues of the Priests. - These are summed up in Num 18:8 in these words, "I give thee the keeping of My heave-offerings in all holy gifts for a portion, as an eternal statute." The notion of משׁמרת, keeping, as in Exo 12:6; Exo 16:23, Exo 16:32, is defined in the second parallel clause as משׁחה, a portion (see at Lev 7:35). The priests were to keep all the heave-offerings, as the portion which belonged to them, out of the sacrificial gifts that the children of Israel offered to the Lord. תּרוּמת, heave-offerings (see at Exo 25:2, and Lev 2:9), is used here in the broadest sense, as including all the holy gifts (kodashim, see Lev 21:22) which the Israelites lifted off from their possessions and presented to the Lord (as in Num 5:9). Among these, for example, were, first of all, the most holy gifts in the meat-offerings, sin-offerings, and trespass-offerings (Num 18:9, Num 18:10; see at Lev 2:3). The burnt-offerings are not mentioned, because the whole of the flesh of these was burned upon the altar, and the skin alone fell to the portion of the priest (Lev 7:8). "From the fire," sc., of the altar. אשׁ, fire, is equivalent to אשּׁה ot , firing (see Lev 1:9). These gifts they were to eat, as most holy, in a most holy place, i.e., in the court of the tabernacle (see Lev 6:9, Lev 6:19; Lev 7:6), which is called "most holy" here, to lay a stronger emphasis upon the precept. In the second place, these gifts included also "the holy gifts;" viz., (a) (Num 18:11) the heave-offering of their gifts in all wave-offerings (tenuphoth), i.e., the wave-breast and heave-leg of the peace-offerings, and whatever else was waved in connection with the sacrifices (see at Lev 7:33): these might be eaten by both the male and female members of the priestly families, provided they were legally clean (Lev 22:3.); (b) (Num 18:12) the gifts of first-fruits: "all the fat (i.e., the best, as in Gen 45:18) of oil, new wine, and corn," viz., ראשׁיתם, "the first of them," the בּכּוּרים, "the first-grown fruits" of the land, and that of all the fruit of the ground (Deu 26:2, Deu 26:10; Pro 3:9; Eze 44:30), corn, wine, oil, honey, and tree-fruit (Deu 8:8, compared with Lev 19:23-24), which were offered, according to Ch2 31:5; Neh 10:36, Neh 10:38, Tob. 1:6, as first-fruits every year (see Mishnah, Bikkur, i. 3, 10, where the first-fruits are specified according to the productions mentioned in Deu 8:8; the law prescribed nothing in relation to the quantity of the different first-fruits, but left this entirely to the offerer himself); (c) (Num 18:14) everything placed under a ban (see at Lev 27:28); and (d) (Num 18:15-18) the first-born of man and beast. The first-born of men and of unclean beasts were redeemed according to Num 3:47; Exo 13:12-13, and Lev 27:6, Lev 27:27; but such as were fit for sacrifice were actually offered, the blood being swung against the altar, and the fat portions burned upon it, whilst the whole of the flesh fell to the portion of the priests. So far as the redemption of human beings was concerned (Num 18:16), they were "to redeem from the monthly child," i.e., the first-born child as soon as it was a month old.

¹⁶ And those that are to be redeemed [06299] from a month [02320] old [01121] shalt thou redeem [06299], according to thine estimation [06187], for the money [03701] of five [02568] shekels [08255], after the shekel [08255] of the sanctuary [06944], which is twenty [06242] gerahs [01626].

²⁷ And if it be of an unclean [02931] beast [0929], then he shall redeem [06299] it according to thine estimation [06187], and shall add [03254] a fifth [02549] part of it thereto: or if it be not redeemed [01350], then it shall be sold [04376] according to thy estimation [06187].

⁶ And if it be from a month [02320] old [01121] even unto five [02568] years [08141] old [01121], then thy estimation [06187] shall be of the male [02145] five [02568] shekels [08255] of silver [03701], and for the female [05347] thy estimation [06187] shall be three [07969] shekels [08255] of silver [03701].

³⁸ And the priest [03548] the son [01121] of Aaron [0175] shall be with the Levites [03881], when the Levites [03881] take tithes [06237]: and the Levites [03881] shall bring up [05927] the tithe [04643] of the tithes [04643] unto the house [01004] of our God [0430], to the chambers [03957], into the treasure [0214] house [01004].

¹⁸ And take [03947] your father [01] and your households [01004], and come [0935] unto me: and I will give [05414] you the good [02898] of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], and ye shall eat [0398] the fat [02459] of the land [0776].

¹² All the best [02459] of the oil [03323], and all the best [02459] of the wine [08492], and of the wheat [01715], the firstfruits [07225] of them which they shall offer [05414] unto the LORD [03068], them have I given [05414] thee.

³ Say [0559] unto them, Whosoever [0376] he be of all your seed [02233] among your generations [01755], that goeth [07126] unto the holy things [06944], which the children [01121] of Israel [03478] hallow [06942] unto the LORD [03068], having his uncleanness [02932] upon him, that soul [05315] shall be cut off [03772] from my presence [06440]: I am the LORD [03068].

³³ He among the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175], that offereth [07126] the blood [01818] of the peace offerings [08002], and the fat [02459], shall have the right [03225] shoulder [07785] for his part [04490].

¹¹ And this is thine; the heave offering [08641] of their gift [04976], with all the wave offerings [08573] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478]: I have given [05414] them unto thee, and to thy sons [01121] and to thy daughters [01323] with thee, by a statute [02706] for ever [05769]: every one that is clean [02889] in thy house [01004] shall eat [0398] of it.

⁶ Every male [02145] among the priests [03548] shall eat [0398] thereof: it shall be eaten [0398] in the holy [06918] place [04725]: it is most [06944] holy [06944].

¹⁹ And the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto Moses [04872], saying [0559],

⁹ Command [06680] Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121], saying [0559], This is the law [08451] of the burnt offering [05930]: It is the burnt offering [05930], because of the burning [04169] upon the altar [04196] all night [03915] unto the morning [01242], and the fire [0784] of the altar [04196] shall be burning [03344] in it.

⁹ But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].

⁸ And the priest [03548] that offereth [07126] any man's [0376] burnt offering [05930], even the priest [03548] shall have to himself the skin [05785] of the burnt offering [05930] which he hath offered [07126].

³ And the remnant [03498] of the meat offering [04503] shall be Aaron's [0175] and his sons [01121]': it is a thing most [06944] holy [06944] of the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801].

¹⁰ In the most [06944] holy [06944] place shalt thou eat [0398] it; every male [02145] shall eat [0398] it: it shall be holy [06944] unto thee.

⁹ This shall be thine of the most [06944] holy things [06944], reserved from the fire [0784]: every oblation [07133] of theirs, every meat offering [04503] of theirs, and every sin offering [02403] of theirs, and every trespass offering [0817] of theirs, which they shall render [07725] unto me, shall be most [06944] holy [06944] for thee and for thy sons [01121].

⁹ And the priest [03548] shall take [07311] from the meat offering [04503] a memorial [0234] thereof, and shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196]: it is an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].

² Speak [01696] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], that they bring [03947] me an offering [08641]: of every man [0376] that giveth it willingly [05068] with his heart [03820] ye shall take [03947] my offering [08641].

³² And Moses [04872] said [0559], This is the thing [01697] which the LORD [03068] commandeth [06680], Fill [04393] an omer [06016] of it to be kept [04931] for your generations [01755]; that they may see [07200] the bread [03899] wherewith I have fed [0398] you in the wilderness [04057], when I brought you forth [03318] from the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].

⁶ And ye shall keep [04931] it up until the fourteenth [0702] [06240] day [03117] of the same month [02320]: and the whole [03605] assembly [06951] of the congregation [05712] of Israel [03478] shall kill [07819] it in [0996] the evening [06153].
