Judah his portion in the holy land--Lest the joining of the Gentile "nations to Jehovah" (Zac 2:11) should lead the Jews to fear that their peculiar relation to Him (Deu 4:20; Deu 9:29; Deu 32:9) as "His inheritance" should cease, this verse is added to assure them of His making them so hereafter "again."

And the Lord shall inherit Judah His portion - The inheritance of the Lord is the title which God commonly gave to Israel (Deu 4:20; Deu 9:26, Deu 9:29; Sa1 26:19; Sa2 14:16; Sa2 20:19; Sa2 21:3; Kg1 8:51; Psa 28:9; Psa 33:12; Psa 68:10; Psa 78:62, Psa 78:71; Psa 119:1; Psa 106:40, Joe 2:17; Joe 3:2, (Hebrew) Isa 19:25; Isa 47:6; Jer 12:7-9; Jer 50:11). God is said to be the portion of Israel Jer 10:16; Jer 51:19; of the pious Psa 16:5; Psa 73:26; Psa 119:57; Psa 142:6; Lam 3:24; once only beside, is Israel said to be the portion of God Deu 32:9; once only is God said to inherit Israel, "Pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance" Exo 34:9. Zechariah unites the two rare idioms.
In the holy land - The land is again made holy by God, and sanctified by His Presence. So He calls the place where He revealed Himself to Moses, "holy ground" Exo 3:5. So it is said, "the holy place" Lev 10:17; Lev 14:13, "the holy house" Ch1 29:3, "the holy ark" Ch2 35:3, "the holy city" Neh 11:1, Neh 11:18; Isa 48:2; Isa 52:1, "the holy mountain" Isa 27:13; Jer 31:23; Zac 8:3, "the holy people" Isa 62:12, "the holy chambers" (Eze 42:13 all), or, with reference to their relation to God who consecrates them, "My holy mountain" Psa 2:6; Isa 11:9; Isa 56:7; Isa 57:13; Isa 65:11, Isa 65:25; Isa 66:20; Eze 20:40; Joe 2:1; Joe 3:17; Oba 1:16. Zep 3:11, "Thy holy habitation" Exo 15:13, "Thy holy dwelling-place" (Deu 26:15. "His holy hab." It is not one technical expression, as people now by a sort of effort speak of "the holy land." Everything which has reference to God is holy. The land is holy, not for any merits of theirs, but because God was worshiped there, was specially present there. It was an anticipation and type of "Thy holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee." This land their fathers had "polluted with blood" Psa 106:38; God says, "they defiled My land" Jer 2:7; Jer 3:9; Jer 16:18; Ezekiel called her eminently, "the land that is not cleansed" Eze 22:24. Now God said, "I will remove the iniquity of the land" Zac 3:9, and she was again a holy land, as hallowed by Him.
It is not a mere conversion of the pagan, But, as Isaiah Isa 2:3 and Micah Mic 4:2 foretold; a conversion, of which Jerusalem should be the center, as our Lord explained to the Apostles after His Resurrection, "that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem" Luk 24:47. |

| "And Jehovah will take possession of Judah as His portion in the holy land, and will yet choose Jerusalem. Zac 2:13. Be still, all flesh, before Jehovah; for He has risen up out of His holy habitation." The first hemistich of Zac 2:12 rests upon Deu 32:9, where Israel, as the chosen nation, is called the chēleq and nachălâh of Jehovah. This appointment of Israel to be the possession of Jehovah will become perfect truth and reality in the future, through the coming of the Lord. Yehūdâh is Judah as delivered, i.e., the remnant of the whole of the covenant nation. This remnant, after being gathered out of Babel, will dwell upon holy ground, or in a holy land, as the possession of the Lord. The holy land is the land of Jehovah (Hos 9:3); but this is not to be set down without reserve as identical with Palestine. On the contrary, every place where Jehovah may be is holy ground (cf. Exo 3:5); so that even Palestine is only holy when the Lord dwells there. And we must not limit the idea of the holy land in this passage to Palestine, because the idea of the people of God will be so expanded by the addition of nation nations, that it will not have room enough within the limits of Palestine; and according to Deu 32:4, even Jerusalem will no longer be a city with limited boundaries. The holy land reaches just as far as the nations, which have become the people of Jehovah by attaching themselves to Judah, spread themselves out over the surface of the earth. The words "choose Jerusalem again" round off the promise, just as in Zac 1:17; but in Zac 2:13 the admonition is added, to wait in reverential silence for the coming of the Lord to judgment, after Hab 2:20; and the reason assigned is, that the judgment will soon begin. נעור, niphal of עוּר (compare Ewald, 140, a; Ges. 72, Anm. 9), to wake up, or rise up from His rest (cf. Psa 44:24). מעון קדשׁו, the holy habitation of God, is heaven, as in Deu 26:15; Jer 25:30. The judgment upon the heathen world-power began to burst in a very short time. When Babylon revolted against the king of Persia, under the reign of Darius, a great massacre took place within the city after its re-capture, and its walls were destroyed, so that the city could not rise again to its ancient grandeur and importance. Compare with this the remark made in the comm. on Haggai, concerning the overthrow of the Persian empire and those which followed it. We have already shown, what a groundless hypothesis the opinion is, that the fulfilment was interrupted in consequence of Israel's guilt; and that as the result of this, the completion of it has been deferred for centuries, or even thousands of years. |

13 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the great [01419] trumpet [07782] shall be blown [08628], and they shall come [0935] which were ready to perish [06] in the land [0776] of Assyria [0804], and the outcasts [05080] in the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], and shall worship [07812] the LORD [03068] in the holy [06944] mount [02022] at Jerusalem [03389].
1 Awake [05782], awake [05782]; put on [03847] thy strength [05797], O Zion [06726]; put on [03847] thy beautiful [08597] garments [0899], O Jerusalem [03389], the holy [06944] city [05892]: for henceforth there shall no more [03254] come [0935] into thee the uncircumcised [06189] and the unclean [02931].
2 For they call [07121] themselves of the holy [06944] city [05892], and stay [05564] themselves upon the God [0430] of Israel [03478]; The LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] is his name [08034].
18 All the Levites [03881] in the holy [06944] city [05892] were two hundred [03967] fourscore [08084] and four [0702].
1 And the rulers [08269] of the people [05971] dwelt [03427] at Jerusalem [03389]: the rest [07605] of the people [05971] also cast [05307] lots [01486], to bring [0935] one [0259] of ten [06235] to dwell [03427] in Jerusalem [03389] the holy [06944] city [05892], and nine [08672] parts [03027] to dwell in other cities [05892].
3 And said [0559] unto the Levites [03881] that taught [0995] [04000] all Israel [03478], which were holy [06918] unto the LORD [03068], Put [05414] the holy [06944] ark [0727] in the house [01004] which Solomon [08010] the son [01121] of David [01732] king [04428] of Israel [03478] did build [01129]; it shall not be a burden [04853] upon your shoulders [03802]: serve [05647] now the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and his people [05971] Israel [03478],
3 Moreover, because I have set my affection [07521] to the house [01004] of my God [0430], I have [03426] of mine own proper good [05459], of gold [02091] and silver [03701], which I have given [05414] to the house [01004] of my God [0430], over and above [04605] all that I have prepared [03559] for the holy [06944] house [01004],
13 And he shall slay [07819] the lamb [03532] in the place [04725] where he shall kill [07819] the sin offering [02403] and the burnt offering [05930], in the holy [06944] place [04725]: for as the sin offering [02403] is the priest's [03548], so is the trespass offering [0817]: it is most [06944] holy [06944]:
17 Wherefore have ye not eaten [0398] the sin offering [02403] in the holy [06944] place [04725], seeing it is most [06944] holy [06944], and God hath given [05414] it you to bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the congregation [05712], to make atonement [03722] for them before [06440] the LORD [03068]?
5 And he said [0559], Draw not nigh [07126] hither [01988]: put off [05394] thy shoes [05275] from off thy feet [07272], for the place [04725] whereon [0834] thou standest [05975] is holy [06944] ground [0127].
9 And he said [0559], If now I have found [04672] grace [02580] in thy sight [05869], O Lord [0136], let my Lord [0136], I pray thee, go [03212] among [07130] us; for it is a stiffnecked [07186] [06203] people [05971]; and pardon [05545] our iniquity [05771] and our sin [02403], and take us for thine inheritance [05157].
9 For the LORD'S [03068] portion [02506] is his people [05971]; Jacob [03290] is the lot [02256] of his inheritance [05159].
24 The LORD [03068] is my portion [02506], saith [0559] my soul [05315]; therefore will I hope [03176] in him.
6 Attend [07181] unto my cry [07440]; for I am brought [01809] very [03966] low [01809]: deliver [05337] me from my persecutors [07291]; for they are stronger [0553] than I.
57 CHETH. Thou art my portion [02506], O LORD [03068]: I have said [0559] that I would keep [08104] thy words [01697].
26 My flesh [07607] and my heart [03824] faileth [03615]: but God [0430] is the strength [06697] of my heart [03824], and my portion [02506] for ever [05769].
5 The LORD [03068] is the portion [04490] of mine inheritance [02506] and of my cup [03563]: thou maintainest [08551] my lot [01486].

7 I have forsaken [05800] mine house [01004], I have left [05203] mine heritage [05159]; I have given [05414] the dearly beloved [03033] of my soul [05315] into the hand [03709] of her enemies [0341].
8 Mine heritage [05159] is unto me as a lion [0738] in the forest [03293]; it crieth out [05414] [06963] against me: therefore have I hated [08130] it.
9 Mine heritage [05159] is unto me as a speckled [06641] bird [05861], the birds [05861] round about [05439] are against her; come [03212] ye, assemble [0622] all the beasts [02416] of the field [07704], come [0857] to devour [0402].
6 I was wroth [07107] with my people [05971], I have polluted [02490] mine inheritance [05159], and given [05414] them into thine hand [03027]: thou didst shew [07760] them no mercy [07356]; upon the ancient [02205] hast thou very [03966] heavily [03513] laid thy yoke [05923].
25 Whom the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall bless [01288], saying [0559], Blessed [01288] be Egypt [04714] my people [05971], and Assyria [0804] the work [04639] of my hands [03027], and Israel [03478] mine inheritance [05159].
2 I will also gather [06908] all nations [01471], and will bring them down [03381] into the valley [06010] of Jehoshaphat [03092], and will plead [08199] with them there for my people [05971] and for my heritage [05159] Israel [03478], whom they have scattered [06340] among the nations [01471], and parted [02505] my land [0776].
17 Let the priests [03548], the ministers [08334] of the LORD [03068], weep [01058] between the porch [0197] and the altar [04196], and let them say [0559], Spare [02347] thy people [05971], O LORD [03068], and give [05414] not thine heritage [05159] to reproach [02781], that the heathen [01471] should rule over [04910] them: wherefore should they say [0559] among the people [05971], Where is their God [0430]?
40 Therefore was the wrath [0639] of the LORD [03068] kindled [02734] against his people [05971], insomuch that he abhorred [08581] his own inheritance [05159].

71 From following [0310] the ewes great with young [05763] he brought [0935] him to feed [07462] Jacob [03290] his people [05971], and Israel [03478] his inheritance [05159].

10 Thy congregation [02416] hath dwelt [03427] therein: thou, O God [0430], hast prepared [03559] of thy goodness [02896] for the poor [06041].
12 Blessed [0835] is the nation [01471] whose God [0430] is the LORD [03068]; and the people [05971] whom he hath chosen [0977] for his own inheritance [05159].
9 Save [03467] thy people [05971], and bless [01288] thine inheritance [05159]: feed [07462] them also, and lift them up [05375] for ever [05769].
51 For they be thy people [05971], and thine inheritance [05159], which thou broughtest forth [03318] out of Egypt [04714], from the midst [08432] of the furnace [03564] of iron [01270]:
3 Wherefore David [01732] said [0559] unto the Gibeonites [01393], What shall I do [06213] for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement [03722], that ye may bless [01288] the inheritance [05159] of the LORD [03068]?
19 I am one of them that are peaceable [07999] and faithful [0539] in Israel [03478]: thou seekest [01245] to destroy [04191] a city [05892] and a mother [0517] in Israel [03478]: why wilt thou swallow up [01104] the inheritance [05159] of the LORD [03068]?
16 For the king [04428] will hear [08085], to deliver [05337] his handmaid [0519] out of the hand [03709] of the man [0376] that would destroy [08045] me and my son [01121] together [03162] out of the inheritance [05159] of God [0430].
19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord [0113] the king [04428] hear [08085] the words [01697] of his servant [05650]. If the LORD [03068] have stirred thee up [05496] against me, let him accept [07306] an offering [04503]: but if they be the children [01121] of men [0120], cursed [0779] be they before [06440] the LORD [03068]; for they have driven [01644] me out this day [03117] from abiding [05596] in the inheritance [05159] of the LORD [03068], saying [0559], Go [03212], serve [05647] other [0312] gods [0430].
29 Yet they are thy people [05971] and thine inheritance [05159], which thou broughtest out [03318] by thy mighty [01419] power [03581] and by thy stretched out [05186] arm [02220].
26 I prayed [06419] therefore unto the LORD [03068], and said [0559], O Lord [0136] GOD [03069], destroy [07843] not thy people [05971] and thine inheritance [05159], which thou hast redeemed [06299] through thy greatness [01433], which thou hast brought forth [03318] out of Egypt [04714] with a mighty [02389] hand [03027].
20 But the LORD [03068] hath taken [03947] you, and brought you forth [03318] out of the iron [01270] furnace [03564], even out of Egypt [04714], to be unto him a people [05971] of inheritance [05159], as ye are this day [03117].
30 Therefore prophesy [05012] thou against them all these words [01697], and say [0559] unto them, The LORD [03068] shall roar [07580] from on high [04791], and utter [05414] his voice [06963] from his holy [06944] habitation [04583]; he shall mightily [07580] roar [07580] upon his habitation [05116]; he shall give [06030] a shout [01959], as they that tread [01869] the grapes, against all the inhabitants [03427] of the earth [0776].
15 Look down [08259] from thy holy [06944] habitation [04583], from heaven [08064], and bless [01288] thy people [05971] Israel [03478], and the land [0127] which thou hast given [05414] us, as thou swarest [07650] unto our fathers [01], a land [0776] that floweth [02100] with milk [02461] and honey [01706].
24 Wherefore hidest [05641] thou thy face [06440], and forgettest [07911] our affliction [06040] and our oppression [03906]?
20 But the LORD [03068] is in his holy [06944] temple [01964]: let all the earth [0776] keep silence [02013] before [06440] him.
13 Be silent [02013], O all flesh [01320], before [06440] the LORD [03068]: for he is raised up [05782] out of his holy [06944] habitation [04583].
17 Cry [07121] yet, saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]; My cities [05892] through prosperity [02896] shall yet be spread abroad [06327]; and the LORD [03068] shall yet comfort [05162] Zion [06726], and shall yet choose [0977] Jerusalem [03389].
4 He is the Rock [06697], his work [06467] is perfect [08549]: for all his ways [01870] are judgment [04941]: a God [0410] of truth [0530] and without iniquity [05766], just [06662] and right [03477] is he.
5 And he said [0559], Draw not nigh [07126] hither [01988]: put off [05394] thy shoes [05275] from off thy feet [07272], for the place [04725] whereon [0834] thou standest [05975] is holy [06944] ground [0127].
3 They shall not dwell [03427] in the LORD'S [03068] land [0776]; but Ephraim [0669] shall return [07725] to Egypt [04714], and they shall eat [0398] unclean [02931] things in Assyria [0804].
9 For the LORD'S [03068] portion [02506] is his people [05971]; Jacob [03290] is the lot [02256] of his inheritance [05159].
12 And the LORD [03068] shall inherit [05157] Judah [03063] his portion [02506] in the holy [06944] land [0127], and shall choose [0977] Jerusalem [03389] again.
13 Be silent [02013], O all flesh [01320], before [06440] the LORD [03068]: for he is raised up [05782] out of his holy [06944] habitation [04583].
