Be ye not like your fathers - Strangely infectious is the precedent of ill. Tradition of good, of truth, of faith, is decried; only tradition of ill and error are adhered to. The sin of Jeroboam was held sacred by every king of Israel: "The statutes of Omri were diligently kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab" Mic 6:16. "They turned back and were treacherous like their forefathers; they turned themselves like a deceitful bow" Psa 78:57, is God's summary of the history of Israel. Cyril: "Absurd are they who follow the ignorances of their fathers, and ever plead inherited custom as an irrefragable defense, though blamed for extremest ills. So idolaters especially, being called to the knowledge of the truth, ever bear in mind the error of their fathers and, embracing their ignorance as an hereditary lot, remain blind." The former prophets - The prophets spake God's words, as well in their pastoral office as in predicting things to come, in enforcing God's law and in exhorting to repentance, as in announcing the judgments on disobedience. The predictive as well as the pastoral office were united in Nathan Sa2 7:4-16; Sa2 12:1-14, Gad Sa1 22:5; Sa1 24:11, Shemaiah Ch2 11:2-4; Ch2 12:5-8, Azariah 2 Chr. 15, Hanani Ch2 16:7-9, Elijah Kg1 17:1, Kg1 17:14; Kg1 18:1, Kg1 18:41; Kg1 21:19, Kg1 21:21, Kg1 21:23, Kg1 21:29; Kg2 1:4, Kg2 1:16, Elisha Kg2 3:17-18; Kg2 4:16; Kg2 5:27; Kg2 7:1-2; Kg2 8:10-13; Kg2 13:14-19, Micaiah the son of Imla, whose habitual predictions against Ahab induced Ahab to say Kg1 22:8, "I hate him, for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil." The specific calls to conversion here named and their fruitlessness, are summed up by Jeremiah as words of all the prophets. For ten years he says, "The word of the Lord hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking, and ye have not hearkened. And the Lord hath sent unto you all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending; but ye have not hearkened nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil ways and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers forever and ever; and go not after other gods to serve and worship them, and provoke Me not to anger with the works of your hands, and I will do you no hurt. But ye have not hearkened unto Me, saith the Lord; that ye might provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt. Therefore, thus saith the Lord of hosts, Because ye have not heard My words ..." Jer 25:3-8. The prophetic author of the book of Kings sums up in like way, of "all the prophets and all the seers." "The Lord testified against Israel and against Judah by the hand of all the prophets and all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways and keep My commandments, My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets, and they did not hear, and hardened their neck, like the neck of their fathers" Kg2 17:13. The characteristic word, "turn from your evil ways and the evil of your doings" occurring in Jeremiah, it is probable, that this summary was chiefly in the mind of Zechariah, and that he refers not to Isaiah, Joel, Amos etc., (as all the prophets were preachers of repentance), but to the whole body of teachers, whom God raised up, analogous to the Christian ministry, to recall people to Himself. The title, "the former prophets," contrasts the office of Haggai and Zechariah, not with definite prophets before the captivity, but with the whole company of those, whom God sent as He says, so unremittingly. And they hearkened not unto Me - Jerome: "They heard not the Lord warning through the prophets, attended not - not to the prophets who spake to them but - not to Me, saith the Lord. For I was in them who spake and was despised. Whence also the Lord in the Gospel saith, "He that receiveth you, receiveth Me" Mat 10:40.

⁸ Were not the Ethiopians [03569] and the Lubims [03864] a huge [07230] host [02428], with very [03966] many [07235] chariots [07393] and horsemen [06571]? yet, because thou didst rely [08172] on the LORD [03068], he delivered [05414] them into thine hand [03027].
⁹ For the eyes [05869] of the LORD [03068] run to and fro [07751] throughout the whole earth [0776], to shew himself strong [02388] in the behalf of them whose heart [03824] is perfect [08003] toward him. ⁶ Whereupon the princes [08269] of Israel [03478] and the king [04428] humbled [03665] themselves; and they said [0559], The LORD [03068] is righteous [06662].

⁸ And I gave [05414] thee thy master's [0113] house [01004], and thy master's [0113] wives [0802] into thy bosom [02436], and gave [05414] thee the house [01004] of Israel [03478] and of Judah [03063]; and if that had been too little [04592], I would moreover have given [03254] unto thee such [02007] and such things [02007].
⁹ Wherefore hast thou despised [0959] the commandment [01697] of the LORD [03068], to do [06213] evil [07451] in his sight [05869]? thou hast killed [05221] Uriah [0223] the Hittite [02850] with the sword [02719], and hast taken [03947] his wife [0802] to be thy wife [0802], and hast slain [02026] him with the sword [02719] of the children [01121] of Ammon [05983].
¹⁰ Now therefore the sword [02719] shall never [05704] [05769] depart [05493] from thine house [01004]; because [06118] thou hast despised [0959] me, and hast taken [03947] the wife [0802] of Uriah [0223] the Hittite [02850] to be thy wife [0802].

¹³ And David [01732] said [0559] unto Nathan [05416], I have sinned [02398] against the LORD [03068]. And Nathan [05416] said [0559] unto David [01732], The LORD [03068] also hath put away [05674] thy sin [02403]; thou shalt not die [04191].
¹⁴ Howbeit [0657], because by this deed [01697] thou hast given [05006] great occasion [05006] to the enemies [0341] of the LORD [03068] to blaspheme [05006], the child [01121] also that is born [03209] unto thee shall surely [04191] die [04191].

⁴ And it came to pass that night [03915], that the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto Nathan [05416], saying [0559],
⁵ Go [03212] and tell [0559] my servant [05650] David [01732], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Shalt thou build [01129] me an house [01004] for me to dwell in [03427]?
⁶ Whereas I have not dwelt [03427] in any house [01004] since the time [03117] that I brought up [05927] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] out of Egypt [04714], even to this day [03117], but have walked [01980] in a tent [0168] and in a tabernacle [04908].
⁷ In all the places wherein I have walked [01980] with all the children [01121] of Israel [03478] spake [01696] I a word [01697] with any [0259] of the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478], whom I commanded [06680] to feed [07462] my people [05971] Israel [03478], saying [0559], Why build [01129] ye not me an house [01004] of cedar [0730]?
⁸ Now therefore so shalt thou say [0559] unto my servant [05650] David [01732], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], I took [03947] thee from the sheepcote [05116], from following [0310] the sheep [06629], to be ruler [05057] over my people [05971], over Israel [03478]:
⁹ And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest [01980], and have cut off [03772] all thine enemies [0341] out of thy sight [06440], and have made [06213] thee a great [01419] name [08034], like unto the name [08034] of the great [01419] men that are in the earth [0776].
¹⁰ Moreover I will appoint [07760] a place [04725] for my people [05971] Israel [03478], and will plant [05193] them, that they may dwell [07931] in a place of their own, and move [07264] no more; neither shall the children [01121] of wickedness [05766] afflict [06031] them any more [03254], as beforetime [07223],
¹¹ And as since the time [03117] that I commanded [06680] judges [08199] to be over my people [05971] Israel [03478], and have caused thee to rest [05117] from all thine enemies [0341]. Also the LORD [03068] telleth [05046] thee that he will make [06213] thee an house [01004].
¹² And when thy days [03117] be fulfilled [04390], and thou shalt sleep [07901] with thy fathers [01], I will set up [06965] thy seed [02233] after [0310] thee, which shall proceed [03318] out of thy bowels [04578], and I will establish [03559] his kingdom [04467].
¹³ He shall build [01129] an house [01004] for my name [08034], and I will stablish [03559] the throne [03678] of his kingdom [04467] for [05704] ever [05769].
¹⁴ I will be his father [01], and he shall be my son [01121]. If he commit iniquity [05753], I will chasten [03198] him with the rod [07626] of men [0582], and with the stripes [05061] of the children [01121] of men [0120]:
¹⁵ But my mercy [02617] shall not depart away [05493] from him, as I took [05493] it from Saul [07586], whom I put away [05493] before [06440] thee.
¹⁶ And thine house [01004] and thy kingdom [04467] shall be established [0539] for [05704] ever [05769] before [06440] thee: thy throne [03678] shall be established [03559] for [05704] ever [05769].

⁵⁷ But turned back [05472], and dealt unfaithfully [0898] like their fathers [01]: they were turned aside [02015] like a deceitful [07423] bow [07198].

¹⁶ For the statutes [02708] of Omri [06018] are kept [08104], and all the works [04639] of the house [01004] of Ahab [0256], and ye walk [03212] in their counsels [04156]; that I should make [05414] thee a desolation [08047], and the inhabitants [03427] thereof an hissing [08322]: therefore ye shall bear [05375] the reproach [02781] of my people [05971].
