JEHOVAH'S ATTRIBUTES AS A JEALOUS JUDGE OF SIN, YET MERCIFUL TO HIS TRUSTING PEOPLE, SHOULD INSPIRE THEM WITH CONFIDENCE. HE WILL NOT ALLOW THE ASSYRIANS AGAIN TO ASSAIL THEM, BUT WILL DESTROY THE FOE. (Nah 1:1-15)
burden of Nineveh--the prophetic doom of Nineveh. Nahum prophesied against that city a hundred fifty years after Jonah. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The burden - Jerome: "The word משׂא mas's'â', 'burden' is never placed in the title, except when the vision is heavy and full of burden and toil."
Of Nineveh - The prophecy of Nahum again is very stern and awful. Nineveh, after having "repented at the preaching of Jonah," again fell back into the sins whereof it had repented, and added this, that, being employed by God to chasten Israel, it set itself, not to inflict the measure of God's displeasure, but to uproot the chosen people, in whom was promised the birth of Christ . It was then an antichrist, and a type of him yet to come. Jonah's mission was a call to repentance, a type and forerunner of all God's messages to the world, while the day of grace and the world's probation lasts. Nahum, "the full of exceeding comfort," as his name means, or "the comforter" is sent to Joh 16:6, Joh 16:8. "reprove the world of judgment." He is sent, prominently, to pronounce on Nineveh its doom when its day of grace should be over, and in it, on the world, when it and "all the works therein shall be burned up" Pe2 3:10.
With few words he directly comforts the people of God Nah 1:15; elsewhere the comfort even to her is indirect, in the destruction of her oppressor. Besides this, there is nothing of mercy or call to repentance, or sorrow for their desolation (as in Jer 3:12; Jer 8:18, Jer 8:21), but rather the pouring out of the vials of the wrath of God upon her and on the evil world, which resists to the end all God's calls and persecutes His people. The Book of Jonah proclaims God, "a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness, who repents Him of the evil." Nahum speaks of the same attributes, yet closes with, "and will not at all acquit the wicked." : "The Merciful Himself, who is by Nature Merciful, the Holy Spirit, seemeth, speaking in the prophet, to laugh at their calamity." All is desolation, and death. The aggression against God is retorted upon the aggressor; one reeling strife for life or death; then the silence of the graveyard. And so, in its further meaning , "the prophecy belongs to the close of the world and the comfort of the saints therein, so that whatsoever they see in the world, they may hold cheap, as passing away and perishing and prepare themselves for the Day of Judgment, when the Lord shall he the Avenger of the true Assyrian."
So our Lord sets forth the end of the world as the comfort of the elect. "When these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh" Luk 21:28. This is the highest fulfillment of the prophecy, for "then will the wrath of God against the wicked be fully seen, who now patiently waiteth for them for mercy."
The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite - o "He first defines the object of the prophecy, whereto it looks; then states who spake it and whence it was;" the human instrument which God employed. The fuller title, "The book of the vision of Nahum" (which stands alone) probably expresses that it was not, like most prophecies, first delivered orally, and then collected by the prophet, but was always (as it is so remarkably) one whole. "The weight and pressure of this 'burden.' may be felt from the very commencement of the book." |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
Nineveh
Nineveh stands in Scripture as the representative of apostate religious Gentiledom, as Babylon represents the confusion into which the Gentile political world-system has fallen (Dan 2:41-43);
(See Scofield) - (Isa 13:1).
Under the preaching of Jonah, B.C. 862, the city and king had turned to God (Elohim), (Jon 3:3-10) But in the time of Nahum, more than a century later, the city had wholly apostatized from God. It is this which distinguishes Nineveh from all the other ancient Gentile cities, and which makes her the suited symbol of the present religious Gentile world-system in the last day. Morally, Nineveh is described in (Rom 1:21-23). The chief deity of apostate Nineveh was the bull-god, with the face of a man and the wings of a bird: "an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts."
The message of Nahum, uttered about one hundred years before the destruction of Nineveh, is, therefore, not a call to repentance, but an unrelieved warning of judgment: "He will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time." (Nah 1:9); see, also, (Nah 3:10). For there is no remedy for apostasy but utter judgment, and a new beginning.
Compare (Isa 1:4); (Isa 1:5); (Isa 1:24-28); (Heb 6:4-8); (Pro 29:1).
It is the way of God; apostasy is punished by catastrophic destruction. Of this the flood and the destruction of Nineveh are witnesses. The coming destruction of apostate Christendom is foreshadowed by these.
Compare (Dan 2:34); (Dan 2:35); (Luk 17:26); (Luk 17:27); (Rev 19:17-21).

Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The heading runs thus: "Burden concerning Nineveh; book of the prophecy of Nahum of Elkosh." The first sentence gives the substance and object, the second the form and author, of the proclamation which follows. משּׂא signifies a burden, from נשׂא, to lift up, to carry, to heave. This meaning has very properly been retained by Jonathan, Aquila, Jerome, Luther, and others, in the headings to the prophetic oracle. Jerome observes on Hab 1:1 : "Massa never occurs in the title, except when it is evidently grave and full of weight and labour." On the other hand, the lxx have generally rendered it λῆμμα in the headings to the oracles, or even ὅρασις, ὅραμα, ῥῆμα (Isaiah 13ff., Isa 30:6); and most of the modern commentators since Cocceius and Vitringa, following this example, have attributed to the word the meaning of "utterance," and derived it from נשׂא, effari. But נשׂא has no more this meaning than נשׂא קול can mean to utter the voice, either in Exo 20:7 and Exo 23:1, to which Hupfeld appeals in support of it, or in Kg2 9:25, to which others appeal. The same may be said of משּׂא, which never means effatum, utterance, and is never placed before simple announcements of salvation, but only before oracles of a threatening nature. Zac 9:1 and Zac 12:1 form no exception to this rule. Delitzsch (on Isa 13:1) observes, with regard to the latter passage, that the promise has at least a dark foil, and in Nahum 9:1ff. the heathen nations of the Persian and Macedonian world-monarchy are threatened with a divine judgment which will break in pieces their imperial glory, and through which they are to be brought to conversion to Jehovah; "and it is just in this that the burden consists, which the word of God lays upon these nations, that they may be brought to conversion through such a judgment from God" (Kliefoth). Even in Pro 30:1 and Pro 31:1 Massâ' does not mean utterance. The words of Agur in Pro 30:1 are a heavy burden, which is rolled upon the natural and conceited reason; they are punitive in their character, reproving human forwardness in the strongest terms; and in Pro 31:1 Massâ' is the discourse with which king Lemuel reproved his mother. For the thorough vindication of this meaning of Massâ', by an exposition of all the passages which have been adduced in support of the rendering "utterance," see Hengstenberg, Christology, on Zac 9:1, and O. Strauss on this passage. For Nineveh, see the comm. on Jon 1:2. The burden, i.e., the threatening words, concerning Nineveh are defined in the second clause as sēpher châzōn, book of the seeing (or of the seen) of Nahum, i.e., of that which Nahum saw in spirit and prophesied concerning Nineveh. The unusual combination of sēpher and châzōn, which only occurs here, is probably intended to show that Nahum simply committed his prophecy concerning Nineveh to writing, and did not first of all announce it orally before the people. On hâ'elqōshı̄ (the Elkoshite), see the Introduction. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The burden - When the prophets were sent to denounce judgments against a nation or city, the word was usually called the burden of that nation or city. The vision - As prophets were of old called seers, Sa1 9:9, so their prophesies were called visions. Nahum - His name speaks a comforter, but it is God's people to whom he gives notice of the destruction of their oppressors. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The burden of Nineveh - משא massa not only signifies a burden, but also a thing lifted up, pronounced, or proclaimed; also a message. It is used by the prophets to signify the revelation which they have received from God to deliver to any particular people: the oracle - the prophecy. Here it signifies the declaration from God relative to the overthrow of Nineveh, and the commission of the prophet to deliver it.
As the Assyrians under Pul, Tiglath-pileser, and Shalmaneser, three of their kinds, had been employed by a just God for the chastisement of his disobedient people; the end being now accomplished by them, God is about to burn the rod wherewith he corrected Israel; and Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, is to be destroyed. This prediction appears to have been accomplished a short time after this by Nebuchadnezzar and Cyaxares, the Ahasuerus of Scripture.
Nahum, נחום Nachum, signifies comforter. The name was very suitable, as he was sent to comfort the people, by showing them that God was about to destroy their adversaries. |
1 The burden [04853] of Nineveh [05210]. The book [05612] of the vision [02377] of Nahum [05151] the Elkoshite [0512].
2 God [0410] is jealous [07072], and the LORD [03068] revengeth [05358]; the LORD [03068] revengeth [05358], and is furious [01167] [02534]; the LORD [03068] will take vengeance [05358] on his adversaries [06862], and he reserveth [05201] wrath for his enemies [0341].
3 The LORD [03068] is slow [0750] to anger [0639], and great [01419] in power [03581], and will not at all [05352] acquit [05352] the wicked: the LORD [03068] hath his way [01870] in the whirlwind [05492] and in the storm [08183], and the clouds [06051] are the dust [080] of his feet [07272].
4 He rebuketh [01605] the sea [03220], and maketh it dry [02717], and drieth up [03001] all the rivers [05104]: Bashan [01316] languisheth [0535], and Carmel [03760], and the flower [06525] of Lebanon [03844] languisheth [0535].
5 The mountains [02022] quake [07493] at him, and the hills [01389] melt [04127], and the earth [0776] is burned [05375] at his presence [06440], yea, the world [08398], and all that dwell [03427] therein.
6 Who can stand [05975] before [06440] his indignation [02195]? and who can abide [06965] in the fierceness [02740] of his anger [0639]? his fury [02534] is poured out [05413] like fire [0784], and the rocks [06697] are thrown down [05422] by him.
7 The LORD [03068] is good [02896], a strong hold [04581] in the day [03117] of trouble [06869]; and he knoweth [03045] them that trust [02620] in him.
8 But with an overrunning [05674] flood [07858] he will make [06213] an utter end [03617] of the place [04725] thereof, and darkness [02822] shall pursue [07291] his enemies [0341].
9 What do ye imagine [02803] against the LORD [03068]? he will make [06213] an utter end [03617]: affliction [06869] shall not rise up [06965] the second time [06471].
10 For while they be folden together [05440] as thorns [05518], and while they are drunken [05433] as drunkards [05435], they shall be devoured [0398] as stubble [07179] fully [04392] dry [03002].
11 There is one come out [03318] of thee, that imagineth [02803] evil [07451] against the LORD [03068], a wicked [01100] counsellor [03289].
12 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; Though they be quiet [08003], and likewise many [07227], yet thus shall they be cut down [01494], when he shall pass through [05674]. Though I have afflicted [06031] thee, I will afflict [06031] thee no more.
13 For now will I break [07665] his yoke [04132] from off thee, and will burst [05423] thy bonds [04147] in sunder [05423].
14 And the LORD [03068] hath given a commandment [06680] concerning thee, that no more of thy name [08034] be sown [02232]: out of the house [01004] of thy gods [0430] will I cut off [03772] the graven image [06459] and the molten image [04541]: I will make [07760] thy grave [06913]; for thou art vile [07043].
15 Behold upon the mountains [02022] the feet [07272] of him that bringeth good tidings [01319], that publisheth [08085] peace [07965]! O Judah [03063], keep [02287] thy solemn feasts [02282], perform [07999] thy vows [05088]: for the wicked [01100] shall no more [03254] pass through [05674] thee; he is utterly cut off [03772].
28 And [1161] when these things [5130] begin [756] to come to pass [1096], then look up [352], and [2532] lift up [1869] your [5216] heads [2776]; for [1360] your [5216] redemption [629] draweth nigh [1448].
21 For the hurt [07667] of the daughter [01323] of my people [05971] am I hurt [07665]; I am black [06937]; astonishment [08047] hath taken hold [02388] on me.
18 When I would comfort [04010] myself against sorrow [03015], my heart [03820] is faint [01742] in me.
12 Go [01980] and proclaim [07121] these words [01697] toward the north [06828], and say [0559], Return [07725], thou backsliding [04878] Israel [03478], saith [05002] the LORD [03068]; and I will not cause mine anger [06440] to fall [05307] upon you: for I am merciful [02623], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], and I will not keep [05201] anger for ever [05769].
10 But [1161] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] will come [2240] as [5613] a thief [2812] in [1722] the night [3571]; in [1722] the which [3739] the heavens [3772] shall pass away [3928] with a great noise [4500], and [1161] the elements [4747] shall melt [3089] with fervent heat [2741], the earth [1093] also [2532] and [2532] the works [2041] that are therein [1722] [846] shall be burned up [2618].
8 And [2532] when he is come [2064], he [1565] will reprove [1651] the world [2889] of [4012] sin [266], and [2532] of [4012] righteousness [1343], and [2532] of [4012] judgment [2920]:
6 But [235] because [3754] I have said [2980] these things [5023] unto you [5213], sorrow [3077] hath filled [4137] your [5216] heart [2588].
1 The burden [04853] of Babylon [0894], which Isaiah [03470] the son [01121] of Amoz [0531] did see [02372].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
27 They did eat [2068], they drank [4095], they married wives [1060], they were given in marriage [1547], until [891] the day [2250] that [3739] Noe [3575] entered [1525] into [1519] the ark [2787], and [2532] the flood [2627] came [2064], and [2532] destroyed [622] them all [537].
26 And [2532] as [2531] it was [1096] in [1722] the days [2250] of Noe [3575], so [3779] shall it be [2071] also [2532] in [1722] the days [2250] of the Son [5207] of man [444].
35 Then [0116] was the iron [06523], the clay [02635], the brass [05174], the silver [03702], and the gold [01722], broken to pieces [01855] [01751] together [02298], and became [01934] like the chaff [05784] of [04481] the summer [07007] threshingfloors [0147]; and the wind [07308] carried [05376] them [01994] away [05376], that [03606] no [03809] place [0870] was found [07912] for them: and the stone [069] that smote [04223] the image [06755] became [01934] a great [07229] mountain [02906], and filled [04391] the whole [03606] earth [0772].
34 Thou sawest [02370] [01934] till [05705] that a stone [069] was cut out [01505] without [03809] hands [03028], which smote [04223] the image [06755] upon [05922] his feet [07271] that were of iron [06523] and clay [02635], and brake [01855] them [01994] to pieces [01855].
1 He [0376], that being often reproved [08433] hardeneth [07185] his neck [06203], shall suddenly [06621] be destroyed [07665], and that without remedy [04832].
4 For [1063] it is impossible [102] for those who were once [530] enlightened [5461], and [5037] have tasted [1089] of the heavenly [2032] gift [1431], and [2532] were made [1096] partakers [3353] of the Holy [40] Ghost [4151],
5 And [2532] have tasted [1089] the good [2570] word [4487] of God [2316], and [5037] the powers [1411] of the world [165] to come [3195],
6 If [2532] they shall fall away [3895], to renew them [340] again [3825] unto [1519] repentance [3341]; seeing they crucify [388] to themselves [1438] the Son [5207] of God [2316] afresh [388], and [2532] put him to an open shame [3856].
7 For [1063] the earth [1093] which [3588] drinketh in [4095] the rain [5205] that cometh [2064] oft [4178] upon [1909] it [846], and [2532] bringeth forth [5088] herbs [1008] meet [2111] for them [1565] [2532] by [1223] whom [3739] it is dressed [1090], receiveth [3335] blessing [2129] from [575] God [2316]:
8 But [1161] that which beareth [1627] thorns [173] and [2532] briers [5146] is rejected [96], and [2532] is nigh [1451] unto cursing [2671]; whose [3739] end [5056] is to [1519] be burned [2740].
24 Therefore saith [05002] the Lord [0113], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], the mighty One [046] of Israel [03478], Ah [01945], I will ease [05162] me of mine adversaries [06862], and avenge [05358] me of mine enemies [0341]:
25 And I will turn [07725] my hand [03027] upon thee, and purely [01253] purge away [06884] thy dross [05509], and take away [05493] all thy tin [0913]:
26 And I will restore [07725] thy judges [08199] as at the first [07223], and thy counsellors [03289] as at the beginning [08462]: afterward [0310] thou shalt be called [07121], The city [05892] of righteousness [06664], the faithful [0539] city [07151].
27 Zion [06726] shall be redeemed [06299] with judgment [04941], and her converts [07725] with righteousness [06666].
28 And the destruction [07667] of the transgressors [06586] and of the sinners [02400] shall be together [03162], and they that forsake [05800] the LORD [03068] shall be consumed [03615].
5 Why should ye be stricken [05221] any more? ye will revolt [05627] more and more [03254]: the whole head [07218] is sick [02483], and the whole heart [03824] faint [01742].
4 Ah [01945] sinful [02398] nation [01471], a people [05971] laden [03515] with iniquity [05771], a seed [02233] of evildoers [07489], children [01121] that are corrupters [07843]: they have forsaken [05800] [0853] the LORD [03068], they have provoked [05006] [0853] the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478] unto anger [05006], they are gone away [02114] backward [0268].
10 Yet was she carried away [01473], she went [01980] into captivity [07628]: her young children [05768] also were dashed in pieces [07376] at the top [07218] of all the streets [02351]: and they cast [03032] lots [01486] for her honourable men [03513], and all her great men [01419] were bound [07576] in chains [02131].
9 What do ye imagine [02803] against the LORD [03068]? he will make [06213] an utter end [03617]: affliction [06869] shall not rise up [06965] the second time [06471].
21 Because [1360] that, when they knew [1097] God [2316], they glorified [1392] him not [3756] as [5613] God [2316], neither [2228] were thankful [2168]; but [235] became vain [3154] in [1722] their [846] imaginations [1261], and [2532] their [846] foolish [801] heart [2588] was darkened [4654].
22 Professing themselves [5335] to be [1511] wise [4680], they became fools [3471],
23 And [2532] changed [236] the glory [1391] of the uncorruptible [862] God [2316] into [1722] an image [1504] made like [3667] to corruptible [5349] man [444], and [2532] to birds [4071], and [2532] fourfooted beasts [5074], and [2532] creeping things [2062].
3 So Jonah [03124] arose [06965], and went [03212] unto Nineveh [05210], according to the word [01697] of the LORD [03068]. Now Nineveh [05210] was an exceeding [0430] great [01419] city [05892] of three [07969] days [03117]' journey [04109].
4 And Jonah [03124] began [02490] to enter [0935] into the city [05892] a [0259] day's [03117] journey [04109], and he cried [07121], and said [0559], Yet forty [0705] days [03117], and Nineveh [05210] shall be overthrown [02015].
5 So the people [0582] of Nineveh [05210] believed [0539] God [0430], and proclaimed [07121] a fast [06685], and put [03847] on sackcloth [08242], from the greatest [01419] of them even to the least [06996] of them.
6 For word [01697] came [05060] unto the king [04428] of Nineveh [05210], and he arose [06965] from his throne [03678], and he laid [05674] his robe [0155] from him, and covered [03680] him with sackcloth [08242], and sat [03427] in ashes [0665].
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed [02199] and published [0559] through Nineveh [05210] by the decree [02940] of the king [04428] and his nobles [01419], saying [0559], Let neither man [0120] nor beast [0929], herd [01241] nor flock [06629], taste [02938] any thing [03972]: let them not feed [07462], nor drink [08354] water [04325]:
8 But let man [0120] and beast [0929] be covered [03680] with sackcloth [08242], and cry [07121] mightily [02394] unto God [0430]: yea, let them turn [07725] every one [0376] from his evil [07451] way [01870], and from the violence [02555] that is in their hands [03709].
9 Who can tell [03045] if God [0430] will turn [07725] and repent [05162], and turn away [07725] from his fierce [02740] anger [0639], that we perish [06] not?
10 And God [0430] saw [07200] their works [04639], that they turned [07725] from their evil [07451] way [01870]; and God [0430] repented [05162] of the evil [07451], that he had said [01696] that he would do [06213] unto them; and he did [06213] it not.
1 The burden [04853] of Babylon [0894], which Isaiah [03470] the son [01121] of Amoz [0531] did see [02372].
41 And whereas thou sawest [02370] the feet [07271] and toes [0677], part [04481] of potters [06353]' clay [02635], and part [04481] of iron [06523], the kingdom [04437] shall be [01934] divided [06386]; but [04481] there shall be [01934] in it of [04481] the strength [05326] of the iron [06523], forasmuch as [03606] [06903] thou sawest [02370] the iron [06523] mixed [06151] with miry [02917] clay [02635].
42 And as the toes [0677] of the feet [07271] were part [04481] of iron [06523], and part [04481] of clay [02635], so the kingdom [04437] shall be [01934] partly [04481] [07118] strong [08624], and partly [04481] [07118] broken [08406].
43 And whereas [01768] thou sawest [02370] iron [06523] mixed [06151] with miry [02917] clay [02635], they shall mingle themselves [01934] [06151] with the seed [02234] of men [0606]: but they shall [01934] not [03809] cleave [01693] one [01836] to [05974] another [01836], even [01888] as iron [06523] is not [03809] mixed [06151] with clay [02635].
2 Arise [06965], go [03212] to Nineveh [05210], that great [01419] city [05892], and cry [07121] against it; for their wickedness [07451] is come up [05927] before [06440] me.
1 The burden [04853] of the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] in the land [0776] of Hadrach [02317], and Damascus [01834] shall be the rest [04496] thereof: when the eyes [05869] of man [0120], as of all the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478], shall be toward the LORD [03068].
1 The words [01697] of king [04428] Lemuel [03927], the prophecy [04853] that his mother [0517] taught [03256] him.
1 The words [01697] of Agur [094] the son [01121] of Jakeh [03348], even the prophecy [04853]: the man [01397] spake [05002] unto Ithiel [0384], even unto Ithiel [0384] and Ucal [0401],
1 The words [01697] of king [04428] Lemuel [03927], the prophecy [04853] that his mother [0517] taught [03256] him.
1 The words [01697] of Agur [094] the son [01121] of Jakeh [03348], even the prophecy [04853]: the man [01397] spake [05002] unto Ithiel [0384], even unto Ithiel [0384] and Ucal [0401],
1 The burden [04853] of Babylon [0894], which Isaiah [03470] the son [01121] of Amoz [0531] did see [02372].
1 The burden [04853] of the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] for Israel [03478], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], which stretcheth [05186] forth the heavens [08064], and layeth the foundation [03245] of the earth [0776], and formeth [03335] the spirit [07307] of man [0120] within [07130] him.
25 Then said [0559] Jehu to Bidkar [0920] his captain [07991], Take up [05375], and cast [07993] him in the portion [02513] of the field [07704] of Naboth [05022] the Jezreelite [03158]: for remember [02142] how that, when I and thou rode [07392] together [06776] after [0310] Ahab [0256] his father [01], the LORD [03068] laid [05375] this burden [04853] upon him;
1 Thou shalt not raise [05375] a false [07723] report [08088]: put [07896] not thine hand [03027] with the wicked [07563] to be an unrighteous [02555] witness [05707].
7 Thou shalt not take [05375] the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] in vain [07723]; for the LORD [03068] will not hold him guiltless [05352] that taketh [05375] his name [08034] in vain [07723].
6 The burden [04853] of the beasts [0929] of the south [05045]: into the land [0776] of trouble [06869] and anguish [06695], from whence come the young [03833] and old lion [03918], the viper [0660] and fiery [08314] flying [05774] serpent [08314], they will carry [05375] their riches [02428] upon the shoulders [03802] of young asses [05895], and their treasures [0214] upon the bunches [01707] of camels [01581], to a people [05971] that shall not profit [03276] them.
1 The burden [04853] which Habakkuk [02265] the prophet [05030] did see [02372].
9 (Beforetime [06440] in Israel [03478], when a man [0376] went [03212] to enquire [01875] of God [0430], thus he spake [0559], Come [03212], and let us go [03212] to the seer [07200]: for he that is now [03117] called a Prophet [05030] was beforetime [06440] called [07121] a Seer [07200]
