Ye so despised these My favors, as to tempt the Nazarite to break his vow; and forbade the prophets prophesying (Isa 30:10). So Amaziah forbade Amos (Amo 7:12-14). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink - Literally, "and," (this, on their part, was the consequence of what God did for them) "ye caused the Nazarites to drink wine." God appointed; Israel strove to undo His appointment. God "raised up Nazarites," as a testimony to them; they sought to make His servants break their vow, in order to rid themselves of that testimony. Their pains to destroy it, is a strong proof of its power. The world is mad against true religion, because it feels itself condemned by it. People set themselves against religion and the religious, the Church or the priesthood, only when and because they feel their power on God's side against them. What people despise, they do not oppose. "They kill us, they do not despise us," were true words of a French priest, as to the "reign of reason" in the first French revolution. If the people in power had not respected the Nazarites, or felt that the people respected them, they would not have attempted to corrupt or to force them to break their vow. The word, "cause" them "to drink," does not express whether they used constraint or seduction. Israel's consciences supplied it. Yet since they "persecuted the prophets" and put them to death, it seems likely that Amos means that they used violence, either by forcing the wine into their mouths, as the swine-flesh was forced into the mouth of Eleazar (2 Macc. 6:18), and, in the Decian persecution an infant was made to eat of the idol oblation , or by threat of death.
And commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not - God had commanded the prophets to prophesy. Israel issued and laid upon them his commands against the commands of God. The more God reveals His Will, the directer and more determinate the opposition of those who will not yield. God's perseverance in trying to win them irritates them; they oppose grace, and are angered at not being let alone. This large statement of Amos means much more than the prohibition of Amaziah to himself Amo 7:13. Jeroboam I was prevented only by miracle Kg1 13:4 from seizing the prophet who denounced the altar at Bethel. Ahab, during the famine foretold by Elijah, sought him everywhere to destroy him Kg1 18:10-12, and Jezebel, after the miracle at Carmel and the death of her prophets, swore by her gods to do so Kg1 19:2-3. Ahab's last act was to imprison Micaiah Kg1 22:26-27, the son of Imlath, for prophesying his death, when adjured by himself to speak truly.
Ahaziah, his son, undeterred by the fire from heaven which destroyed two captains, each with his fifty, sent yet a 3d to take Elijah, when he prophesied that the king would not recover from his sickness Kg2 1:9-13. Jehoram, his second son, swore by God to destroy Elisha, Kg2 6:31, laying the evils of the siege to the prophet, as the Romans did the evils of their decaying empire to the Christian. Micah and Isaiah, a little later, speak of such opposition, in Judah, as habitual Mic 2:6; Isa 30:10-11; much more in Israel, where the opposition to God's law was more fundamental, and where God's prophet's had been all but exterminated. Even Asa, in his degenerate days, imprisoned Hanani for prophesying that he would "have wars" Ch2 16:7, Ch2 16:10; Joash killed Zechariah son of Jehoiada Ch2 24:20-21; Amaziah silenced the prophet who rebuked him, "Art thou made of the king's council? forbear. Why shouldest thou be smitten?" Ch2 25:15-16.
Jehoiakim sent even into Egypt to fetch Uriah and killed him Jer 26:20-23. Jeremiah's life was one continuous encounter with false accusations Jer 20:10; Jer 37:13; Jer 38:4, contradictions by false prophets (Jer 23:17 ff; Jer 27:9-10, Jer 27:14-16; Jer. 28; Jer. 29), hatred Jer 15:10, mockery Jer 17:15; Jer 20:7-8; Jer 23:33, persecution Jer 17:18, imprisonment Jer 20:2; Jer 32:3; Jer 33:1; Jer 37:15-21; Jer 38:6-13, attempts to destroy him (Jer 11:18-21; Jer 18:18, Jer 18:20-23; Jer 26:8 ff; Jer 36:26). The complaint was, as here, "wherefore dost thou prophesy?" Jer 32:3. What, when our Lord gives it as the characteristic of Jerusalem , that she was "the slayer of the prophets, the stoner of those sent unto her?" They would not have slain the prophets, if they could have silenced them.
People are loath to go to extremities with God; they will make an armistice with Him; their awe of holiness makes them inwardly shrink from laying hands on it. Like the wolf in the fable, they must have a plea against it; and that plea against those who have the truth is obstinacy . If the Christians would have abstained from converting the world, they would not have been persecuted. The Chief-priests at first sought simply to silence the Apostles Act 4:18, Act 4:21; then they enforced their command with scourges Act 5:40; then persecuted them and the Christians to death Act 7:57-59; Act 8:1-4; Act 9:1-2; Act 12:1-3; Act 22:4-5. Direct contumacy to God's known voice and silencing His messenger, is a last stage of obduracy and malice, which leaves God no further avenue to the soul or the people. His means of grace are exhausted when the soul or people not only deaden His voice within, but obstruct it without. One who, through vehemence of his passions, refuses to hear, is within the reach of the grace of God, afterward. He who stifles God's word to others has mostly hardened his heart deliberately and maliciously in unlove to man, as well as contempt of God. Hence, God speaks, as though this brought the day of grace to a close. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Ye gave - Importuned them to drink wine, to violate their vow, and contemn God's law. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
But ye gave the Nazarites wine - This was expressly forbidden in the laws of their institution. See Num 6:1-3.
Prophesy not - They would not worship God, and they would not hear the voice of his prophets. |
12 Also Amaziah [0558] said [0559] unto Amos [05986], O thou seer [02374], go [03212], flee thee away [01272] into the land [0776] of Judah [03063], and there eat [0398] bread [03899], and prophesy [05012] there:
13 But prophesy [05012] not again [03254] any more at Bethel [01008]: for it is the king's [04428] chapel [04720], and it is the king's [04467] court [01004].
14 Then answered [06030] Amos [05986], and said [0559] to Amaziah [0558], I was no prophet [05030], neither was I a prophet's [05030] son [01121]; but I was an herdman [0951], and a gatherer [01103] of sycomore fruit [08256]:
10 Which say [0559] to the seers [07200], See [07200] not; and to the prophets [02374], Prophesy [02372] not unto us right things [05229], speak [01696] unto us smooth things [02513], prophesy [02372] deceits [04123]:
4 And I [3739] persecuted [1377] this [5026] way [3598] unto [891] the death [2288], binding [1195] and [2532] delivering [3860] into [1519] prisons [5438] both [5037] men [435] and [2532] women [1135].
5 As [5613] also [2532] the high priest [749] doth bear [3140] me [3427] witness [3140], and [2532] all [3956] the estate of the elders [4244]: from [3844] whom [3739] also [2532] I received [1209] letters [1992] unto [4314] the brethren [80], and [2532] went [4198] to [1519] Damascus [1154], to bring [71] them which were [5607] there [1566] bound [1210] unto [1519] Jerusalem [2419], for to [2443] be punished [5097].
1 Now [1161] about [2596] that [1565] time [2540] Herod [2264] the king [935] stretched forth [1911] his hands [5495] to vex [2559] certain [5100] of [575] the church [1577].
2 And [1161] he killed [337] James [2385] the brother [80] of John [2491] with the sword [3162].
3 And [2532] because he saw [1492] it [3754] pleased [2076] [701] the Jews [2453], he proceeded further [4369] to take [4815] Peter [4074] also [2532]. (Then [1161] were [2258] the days [2250] of unleavened bread [106].)
1 And [1161] Saul [4569], yet [2089] breathing out [1709] threatenings [547] and [2532] slaughter [5408] against [1519] the disciples [3101] of the Lord [2962], went [4334] unto the high priest [749],
2 And desired [154] of [3844] him [846] letters [1992] to [1519] Damascus [1154] to [4314] the synagogues [4864], that [3704] if [1437] he found [2147] any [5100] of this way [3598], whether [5037] they were [5607] men [435] or [2532] women [1135], he might bring them [71] bound [1210] unto [1519] Jerusalem [2419].
1 And [1161] Saul [4569] was [2258] consenting [4909] unto his [846] death [336]. And [1161] at [1722] that [1565] time [2250] there was [1096] a great [3173] persecution [1375] against [1909] the church [1577] which [3588] was at [1722] Jerusalem [2414]; and [5037] they were [1289] all [3956] scattered abroad [1289] throughout [2596] the regions [5561] of Judaea [2449] and [2532] Samaria [4540], except [4133] the apostles [652].
2 And [1161] devout [2126] men [435] carried [4792] Stephen [4736] to his burial, and [2532] made [4160] great [3173] lamentation [2870] over [1909] him [846].
3 As [1161] for Saul [4569], he made havock [3075] of the church [1577], entering into [1531] every [2596] house [3624], and haling [4951] [5037] men [435] and [2532] women [1135] committed [3860] them to [1519] prison [5438].
4 Therefore [3767] [3303] they that were scattered abroad [1289] went every where [1330] preaching [2097] the word [3056].
57 Then [1161] they cried out [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], and stopped [4912] their [846] ears [3775], and [2532] ran [3729] upon [1909] him [846] with one accord [3661],
58 And [2532] cast [1544] him out of [1854] the city [4172], and stoned [3036] him: and [2532] the witnesses [3144] laid down [659] their [846] clothes [2440] at [3844] a young man's [3494] feet [4228], whose name was [2564] Saul [4569].
59 And [2532] they stoned [3036] Stephen [4736], calling upon [1941] God, and [2532] saying [3004], Lord [2962] Jesus [2424], receive [1209] my [3450] spirit [4151].
40 And [1161] to him [846] they agreed [3982]: and [2532] when they had called [4341] the apostles [652], and beaten [1194] them, they commanded [3853] that they should [2980] not [3361] speak [2980] in [1909] the name [3686] of Jesus [2424], and [2532] let [630] them [846] go [630].
21 So [1161] when they had further threatened them [4324], they let [630] them [846] go [630], finding [2147] nothing [3367] how [4459] they might punish [2849] them [846], because [1223] of the people [2992]: for [3754] all [3956] men glorified [1392] God [2316] for [1909] that which was done [1096].
18 And [2532] they called [2564] them [846], and commanded [3853] them [846] not [3361] to speak [5350] at all [2527] nor [3366] teach [1321] in [1909] the name [3686] of Jesus [2424].
3 For Zedekiah [06667] king [04428] of Judah [03063] had shut him up [03607], saying [0559], Wherefore dost thou prophesy [05012], and say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Behold, I will give [05414] this city [05892] into the hand [03027] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894], and he shall take [03920] it;
26 But the king [04428] commanded [06680] Jerahmeel [03396] the son [01121] of Hammelech [04429], and Seraiah [08304] the son [01121] of Azriel [05837], and Shelemiah [08018] the son [01121] of Abdeel [05655], to take [03947] Baruch [01263] the scribe [05608] and Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030]: but the LORD [03068] hid [05641] them.
8 Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah [03414] had made an end [03615] of speaking [01696] all that the LORD [03068] had commanded [06680] him to speak [01696] unto all the people [05971], that the priests [03548] and the prophets [05030] and all the people [05971] took [08610] him, saying [0559], Thou shalt surely [04191] die [04191].
20 Shall evil [07451] be recompensed [07999] for good [02896]? for they have digged [03738] a pit [07745] for my soul [05315]. Remember [02142] that I stood [05975] before [06440] thee to speak [01696] good [02896] for them, and to turn away [07725] thy wrath [02534] from them.
21 Therefore deliver up [05414] their children [01121] to the famine [07458], and pour out [05064] their blood by the force [03027] of the sword [02719]; and let their wives [0802] be bereaved [07909] of their children, and be widows [0490]; and let their men [0582] be put [02026] to death [04194]; let their young men [0970] be slain [05221] by the sword [02719] in battle [04421].
22 Let a cry [02201] be heard [08085] from their houses [01004], when thou shalt bring [0935] a troop [01416] suddenly [06597] upon them: for they have digged [03738] a pit [07745] [07882] to take [03920] me, and hid [02934] snares [06341] for my feet [07272].
23 Yet, LORD [03068], thou knowest [03045] all their counsel [06098] against me to slay [04194] me: forgive [03722] not their iniquity [05771], neither blot out [04229] their sin [02403] from thy sight [06440], but let them be overthrown [03782] before [06440] thee; deal [06213] thus with them in the time [06256] of thine anger [0639].
18 Then said [0559] they, Come [03212], and let us devise [02803] devices [04284] against Jeremiah [03414]; for the law [08451] shall not perish [06] from the priest [03548], nor counsel [06098] from the wise [02450], nor the word [01697] from the prophet [05030]. Come [03212], and let us smite [05221] him with the tongue [03956], and let us not give heed [07181] to any of his words [01697].
18 And the LORD [03068] hath given me knowledge [03045] of it, and I know [03045] it: then thou shewedst [07200] me their doings [04611].
19 But I was like a lamb [03532] or an ox [0441] that is brought [02986] to the slaughter [02873]; and I knew [03045] not that they had devised [02803] devices [04284] against me, saying, Let us destroy [07843] the tree [06086] with the fruit [03899] thereof, and let us cut him off [03772] from the land [0776] of the living [02416], that his name [08034] may be no more remembered [02142].
20 But, O LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], that judgest [08199] righteously [06664], that triest [0974] the reins [03629] and the heart [03820], let me see [07200] thy vengeance [05360] on them: for unto thee have I revealed [01540] my cause [07379].
21 Therefore thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of the men [0582] of Anathoth [06068], that seek [01245] thy life [05315], saying [0559], Prophesy [05012] not in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068], that thou die [04191] not by our hand [03027]:
6 Then took [03947] they Jeremiah [03414], and cast [07993] him into the dungeon [0953] of Malchiah [04441] the son [01121] of Hammelech [04428], that was in the court [02691] of the prison [04307]: and they let down [07971] Jeremiah [03414] with cords [02256]. And in the dungeon [0953] there was no water [04325], but mire [02916]: so Jeremiah [03414] sunk [02883] in the mire [02916].
7 Now when Ebedmelech [05663] the Ethiopian [03569], one [0376] of the eunuchs [05631] which was in the king's [04428] house [01004], heard [08085] that they had put [05414] Jeremiah [03414] in the dungeon [0953]; the king [04428] then sitting [03427] in the gate [08179] of Benjamin [01144];
8 Ebedmelech [05663] went forth [03318] out of the king's [04428] house [01004], and spake [01696] to the king [04428], saying [0559],
9 My lord [0113] the king [04428], these men [0582] have done evil [07489] in all that they have done [06213] to Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030], whom they have cast [07993] into the dungeon [0953]; and he is like to die [04191] for [06440] hunger [07458] in the place [08478] where he is: for there is no more bread [03899] in the city [05892].
10 Then the king [04428] commanded [06680] Ebedmelech [05663] the Ethiopian [03569], saying [0559], Take [03947] from hence thirty [07970] men [0582] with thee [03027], and take up [05927] Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030] out of the dungeon [0953], before he die [04191].
11 So Ebedmelech [05663] took [03947] the men [0582] with him [03027], and went [0935] into the house [01004] of the king [04428] under the treasury [0214], and took [03947] thence old [01094] cast clouts [05499] and old [01094] rotten rags [04418], and let them down [07971] by cords [02256] into the dungeon [0953] to Jeremiah [03414].
12 And Ebedmelech [05663] the Ethiopian [03569] said [0559] unto Jeremiah [03414], Put [07760] now these old [01094] cast clouts [05499] and rotten rags [04418] under thine armholes [0679] [03027] under the cords [02256]. And Jeremiah [03414] did [06213] so.
13 So they drew up [04900] Jeremiah [03414] with cords [02256], and took him up [05927] out of the dungeon [0953]: and Jeremiah [03414] remained [03427] in the court [02691] of the prison [04307].
15 Wherefore the princes [08269] were wroth [07107] with Jeremiah [03414], and smote [05221] him, and put [05414] him in prison [0612] in the house [01004] of Jonathan [03083] the scribe [05608]: for they had made [06213] that the prison [03608].
16 When Jeremiah [03414] was entered [0935] into the dungeon [01004] [0953], and into the cabins [02588], and Jeremiah [03414] had remained [03427] there many [07227] days [03117];
17 Then Zedekiah [06667] the king [04428] sent [07971], and took him out [03947]: and the king [04428] asked [07592] him secretly [05643] in his house [01004], and said [0559], Is there any word [01697] from the LORD [03068]? And Jeremiah [03414] said [0559], There is [03426]: for, said [0559] he, thou shalt be delivered [05414] into the hand [03027] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894].
18 Moreover Jeremiah [03414] said [0559] unto king [04428] Zedekiah [06667], What have I offended [02398] against thee, or against thy servants [05650], or against this people [05971], that ye have put [05414] me in prison [01004] [03608]?
19 Where are now [0346] your prophets [05030] which prophesied [05012] unto you, saying [0559], The king [04428] of Babylon [0894] shall not come [0935] against you, nor against this land [0776]?
20 Therefore hear [08085] now, I pray thee, O my lord [0113] the king [04428]: let my supplication [08467], I pray thee, be accepted [05307] before [06440] thee; that thou cause me not to return [07725] to the house [01004] of Jonathan [03083] the scribe [05608], lest I die [04191] there.
21 Then Zedekiah [06667] the king [04428] commanded [06680] that they should commit [06485] Jeremiah [03414] into the court [02691] of the prison [04307], and that they should give [05414] him daily [03117] a piece [03603] of bread [03899] out of the bakers [0644] ' street [02351], until all the bread [03899] in the city [05892] were spent [08552]. Thus Jeremiah [03414] remained [03427] in the court [02691] of the prison [04307].
1 Moreover the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came unto Jeremiah [03414] the second [08145] time, while he was yet shut up [06113] in the court [02691] of the prison [04307], saying [0559],
3 For Zedekiah [06667] king [04428] of Judah [03063] had shut him up [03607], saying [0559], Wherefore dost thou prophesy [05012], and say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Behold, I will give [05414] this city [05892] into the hand [03027] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894], and he shall take [03920] it;
2 Then Pashur [06583] smote [05221] Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030], and put [05414] him in the stocks [04115] that were in the high [05945] gate [08179] of Benjamin [01144], which was by the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
18 Let them be confounded [0954] that persecute [07291] me, but let not me be confounded [0954]: let them be dismayed [02865], but let not me be dismayed [02865]: bring [0935] upon them the day [03117] of evil [07451], and destroy [07665] them with double [04932] destruction [07670].
33 And when this people [05971], or the prophet [05030], or a priest [03548], shall ask [07592] thee, saying [0559], What is the burden [04853] of the LORD [03068]? thou shalt then say [0559] unto them, What burden [04853]? I will even forsake [05203] you, saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
7 O LORD [03068], thou hast deceived [06601] me, and I was deceived [06601]: thou art stronger [02388] than I, and hast prevailed [03201]: I am in derision [07814] daily [03117], every one mocketh [03932] me.
8 For since [01767] I spake [01696], I cried out [02199], I cried [07121] violence [02555] and spoil [07701]; because the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] was made a reproach [02781] unto me, and a derision [07047], daily [03117].
15 Behold, they say [0559] unto me, Where is the word [01697] of the LORD [03068]? let it come [0935] now.
10 Woe [0188] is me, my mother [0517], that thou hast borne [03205] me a man [0376] of strife [07379] and a man [0376] of contention [04066] to the whole earth [0776]! I have neither lent on usury [05383], nor men have lent to me on usury [05383]; yet every one of them doth curse [07043] me.
14 Therefore hearken [08085] not unto the words [01697] of the prophets [05030] that speak [0559] unto you, saying [0559], Ye shall not serve [05647] the king [04428] of Babylon [0894]: for they prophesy [05012] a lie [08267] unto you.
15 For I have not sent [07971] them, saith [05002] the LORD [03068], yet they prophesy [05012] a lie [08267] in my name [08034]; that I might drive you out [05080], and that ye might perish [06], ye, and the prophets [05030] that prophesy [05012] unto you.
16 Also I spake [01696] to the priests [03548] and to all this people [05971], saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; Hearken [08085] not to the words [01697] of your prophets [05030] that prophesy [05012] unto you, saying [0559], Behold, the vessels [03627] of the LORD'S [03068] house [01004] shall now shortly [04120] be brought again [07725] from Babylon [0894]: for they prophesy [05012] a lie [08267] unto you.
9 Therefore hearken [08085] not ye to your prophets [05030], nor to your diviners [07080], nor to your dreamers [02472], nor to your enchanters [06049], nor to your sorcerers [03786], which speak [0559] unto you, saying [0559], Ye shall not serve [05647] the king [04428] of Babylon [0894]:
10 For they prophesy [05012] a lie [08267] unto you, to remove you far [07368] from your land [0127]; and that I should drive you out [05080], and ye should perish [06].
17 They say [0559] still [0559] unto them that despise [05006] me, The LORD [03068] hath said [01696], Ye shall have peace [07965]; and they say [0559] unto every one that walketh [01980] after the imagination [08307] of his own heart [03820], No evil [07451] shall come [0935] upon you.
4 Therefore the princes [08269] said [0559] unto the king [04428], We beseech thee, let this man [0376] be put to death [04191]: for thus [03651] he weakeneth [07503] the hands [03027] of the men [0582] of war [04421] that remain [07604] in this city [05892], and the hands [03027] of all the people [05971], in speaking [01696] such words [01697] unto them: for this man [0376] seeketh [01875] not the welfare [07965] of this people [05971], but the hurt [07451].
13 And when he was in the gate [08179] of Benjamin [01144], a captain [01167] of the ward [06488] was there, whose name [08034] was Irijah [03376], the son [01121] of Shelemiah [08018], the son [01121] of Hananiah [02608]; and he took [08610] Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030], saying [0559], Thou fallest away [05307] to the Chaldeans [03778].
10 For I heard [08085] the defaming [01681] of many [07227], fear [04032] on every side [05439]. Report [05046], say they, and we will report [05046] it. All my familiars [0582] [07965] watched [08104] for my halting [06763] [06761], saying, Peradventure he will be enticed [06601], and we shall prevail [03201] against him, and we shall take [03947] our revenge [05360] on him.
20 And there was also a man [0376] that prophesied [05012] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068], Urijah [0223] the son [01121] of Shemaiah [08098] of Kirjathjearim [07157], who prophesied [05012] against this city [05892] and against this land [0776] according to all the words [01697] of Jeremiah [03414]:
21 And when Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428], with all his mighty men [01368], and all the princes [08269], heard [08085] his words [01697], the king [04428] sought [01245] to put him to death [04191]: but when Urijah [0223] heard [08085] it, he was afraid [03372], and fled [01272], and went [0935] into Egypt [04714];
22 And Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428] sent [07971] men [0582] into Egypt [04714], namely, Elnathan [0494] the son [01121] of Achbor [05907], and certain men [0582] with him into Egypt [04714].
23 And they fetched forth [03318] Urijah [0223] out of Egypt [04714], and brought [0935] him unto Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428]; who slew [05221] him with the sword [02719], and cast [07993] his dead body [05038] into the graves [06913] of the common [01121] people [05971].
15 Wherefore the anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] was kindled [02734] against Amaziah [0558], and he sent [07971] unto him a prophet [05030], which said [0559] unto him, Why hast thou sought [01875] after the gods [0430] of the people [05971], which could not deliver [05337] their own people [05971] out of thine hand [03027]?
16 And it came to pass, as he talked [01696] with him, that the king said [0559] unto him, Art thou made [05414] of the king's [04428] counsel [03289]? forbear [02308]; why shouldest thou be smitten [05221]? Then the prophet [05030] forbare [02308], and said [0559], I know [03045] that God [0430] hath determined [03289] to destroy [07843] thee, because thou hast done [06213] this, and hast not hearkened [08085] unto my counsel [06098].
20 And the Spirit [07307] of God [0430] came [03847] upon Zechariah [02148] the son [01121] of Jehoiada [03077] the priest [03548], which stood [05975] above the people [05971], and said [0559] unto them, Thus saith [0559] God [0430], Why transgress [05674] ye the commandments [04687] of the LORD [03068], that ye cannot prosper [06743]? because ye have forsaken [05800] the LORD [03068], he hath also forsaken [05800] you.
21 And they conspired [07194] against him, and stoned [07275] him with stones [068] at the commandment [04687] of the king [04428] in the court [02691] of the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
10 Then Asa [0609] was wroth [03707] with the seer [07200], and put [05414] him in a prison [04115] house [01004]; for he was in a rage [02197] with him because of this thing. And Asa [0609] oppressed [07533] some of the people [05971] the same time [06256].
7 And at that time [06256] Hanani [02607] the seer [07200] came [0935] to Asa [0609] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and said [0559] unto him, Because thou hast relied [08172] on the king [04428] of Syria [0758], and not relied [08172] on the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], therefore is the host [02428] of the king [04428] of Syria [0758] escaped [04422] out of thine hand [03027].
10 Which say [0559] to the seers [07200], See [07200] not; and to the prophets [02374], Prophesy [02372] not unto us right things [05229], speak [01696] unto us smooth things [02513], prophesy [02372] deceits [04123]:
11 Get you out [05493] of the way [01870], turn aside [05186] out of the path [0734], cause the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478] to cease [07673] from before [06440] us.
6 Prophesy [05197] ye not, say they to them that prophesy [05197]: they shall not prophesy [05197] to them, that they shall not take [05253] shame [03639].
31 Then he said [0559], God [0430] do [06213] so and more [03254] also to me, if the head [07218] of Elisha [0477] the son [01121] of Shaphat [08202] shall stand [05975] on him this day [03117].
9 Then the king [04428] sent [07971] unto him a captain [08269] of fifty [02572] with his fifty [02572]. And he went up [05927] to him: and, behold, he sat [03427] on the top [07218] of an hill [02022]. And he spake [01696] unto him, Thou man [0376] of God [0430], the king [04428] hath said [01696], Come down [03381].
10 And Elijah [0452] answered [06030] and said [01696] to the captain [08269] of fifty [02572], If I be a man [0376] of God [0430], then let fire [0784] come down [03381] from heaven [08064], and consume [0398] thee and thy fifty [02572]. And there came down [03381] fire [0784] from heaven [08064], and consumed [0398] him and his fifty [02572].
11 Again [07725] also he sent [07971] unto him another [0312] captain [08269] of fifty [02572] with his fifty [02572]. And he answered [06030] and said [01696] unto him, O man [0376] of God [0430], thus hath the king [04428] said [0559], Come down [03381] quickly [04120].
12 And Elijah [0452] answered [06030] and said [01696] unto them, If I be a man [0376] of God [0430], let fire [0784] come down [03381] from heaven [08064], and consume [0398] thee and thy fifty [02572]. And the fire [0784] of God [0430] came down [03381] from heaven [08064], and consumed [0398] him and his fifty [02572].
13 And he sent [07971] again [07725] a captain [08269] of the third [07992] fifty [02572] with his fifty [02572]. And the third [07992] captain [08269] of fifty [02572] went up [05927], and came [0935] and fell [03766] on his knees [01290] before [05048] Elijah [0452], and besought [02603] him, and said [01696] unto him, O man [0376] of God [0430], I pray thee, let my life [05315], and the life [05315] of these fifty [02572] thy servants [05650], be precious [03365] in thy sight [05869].
26 And the king [04428] of Israel [03478] said [0559], Take [03947] Micaiah [04321], and carry him back [07725] unto Amon [0526] the governor [08269] of the city [05892], and to Joash [03101] the king's [04428] son [01121];
27 And say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the king [04428], Put [07760] this fellow in the prison [01004] [03608], and feed [0398] him with bread [03899] of affliction [03906] and with water [04325] of affliction [03906], until I come [0935] in peace [07965].
2 Then Jezebel [0348] sent [07971] a messenger [04397] unto Elijah [0452], saying [0559], So let the gods [0430] do [06213] to me, and more [03254] also, if I make [07760] not thy life [05315] as the life [05315] of one [0259] of them by to morrow [04279] about this time [06256].
3 And when he saw [07200] that, he arose [06965], and went [03212] for his life [05315], and came [0935] to Beersheba [0884], which belongeth to Judah [03063], and left [03240] his servant [05288] there.
10 As the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] liveth [02416], there is no [03426] nation [01471] or kingdom [04467], whither [0834] my lord [0113] hath not sent [07971] to seek [01245] thee: and when they said [0559], He is not there; he took an oath [07650] of the kingdom [04467] and nation [01471], that they found [04672] thee not.
11 And now thou sayest [0559], Go [03212], tell [0559] thy lord [0113], Behold, Elijah [0452] is here.
12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone [03212] from thee, that the Spirit [07307] of the LORD [03068] shall carry [05375] thee whither I know [03045] not; and so when I come [0935] and tell [05046] Ahab [0256], and he cannot find [04672] thee, he shall slay [02026] me: but I thy servant [05650] fear [03372] the LORD [03068] from my youth [05271].
4 And it came to pass, when king [04428] Jeroboam [03379] heard [08085] the saying [01697] of the man [0376] of God [0430], which had cried [07121] against the altar [04196] in Bethel [01008], that he put forth [07971] his hand [03027] from the altar [04196], saying [0559], Lay hold [08610] on him. And his hand [03027], which he put forth [07971] against him, dried up [03001], so that he could [03201] not pull it in again [07725] to him.
13 But prophesy [05012] not again [03254] any more at Bethel [01008]: for it is the king's [04428] chapel [04720], and it is the king's [04467] court [01004].
1 And the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto Moses [04872], saying [0559],
2 Speak [01696] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and say [0559] unto them, When either man [0376] or woman [0802] shall separate [06381] themselves to vow [05087] a vow [05088] of a Nazarite [05139], to separate [05144] themselves unto the LORD [03068]:
3 He shall separate [05144] himself from wine [03196] and strong drink [07941], and shall drink [08354] no vinegar [02558] of wine [03196], or vinegar [02558] of strong drink [07941], neither shall he drink [08354] any liquor [04952] of grapes [06025], nor eat [0398] moist [03892] grapes [06025], or dried [03002].
