| if the rising be white--This BRIGHT WHITE leprosy is the most malignant and inveterate of all the varieties the disease exhibits, and it was marked by the following distinctive signs: A glossy white and spreading scale, upon an elevated base, the elevation depressed in the middle, but without a change of color; the black hair on the patches participating in the whiteness, and the scaly patches themselves perpetually enlarging their boundary. Several of these characteristics, taken separately, belong to other blemishes of the skin as well; so that none of them was to be taken alone, and it was only when the whole of them concurred that the Jewish priest, in his capacity of physician, was to pronounce the disease a malignant leprosy. If it spread over the entire frame without producing any ulceration, it lost its contagious power by degrees; or, in other words, it ran through its course and exhausted itself. In that case, there being no longer any fear of further evil, either to the individual himself or to the community, the patient was declared clean by the priest, while the dry scales were yet upon him, and restored to society. If, on the contrary, the patches ulcerated and quick or fungous flesh sprang up in them, the purulent matter of which, if brought into contact with the skin of other persons, would be taken into the constitution by means of absorbent vessels, the priest was at once to pronounce it an inveterate leprosy. A temporary confinement was them declared to be totally unnecessary, and he was regarded as unclean for life [DR. GOOD]. Other skin affections, which had a tendency to terminate in leprosy, though they were not decided symptoms when alone, were: "a boil" (Lev 13:18-23); "a hot burning,"--that is, a fiery inflammation or carbuncle (Lev 13:24-28); and "a dry scall" (Lev 13:29-37), when the leprosy was distinguished by being deeper than the skin and the hair became thin and yellow. |

33 He shall be shaven [01548], but the scall [05424] shall he not shave [01548]; and the priest [03548] shall shut [05462] up him that hath the scall [05424] seven [07651] days [03117] more [08145]:

37 But if the scall [05424] be in his sight [05869] at a stay [05975], and that there is black [07838] hair [08181] grown [06779] up therein; the scall [05424] is healed [07495], he is clean [02889]: and the priest [03548] shall pronounce him clean [02891].
24 Or if there be any flesh [01320], in the skin [05785] whereof there is a hot [0784] burning [04348], and the quick [04241] flesh that burneth [04348] have a white [03836] bright spot [0934], somewhat reddish [0125], or white [03836];
25 Then the priest [03548] shall look [07200] upon it: and, behold, if the hair [08181] in the bright spot [0934] be turned [02015] white [03836], and it be in sight [04758] deeper [06013] than the skin [05785]; it is a leprosy [06883] broken [06524] out of the burning [04348]: wherefore the priest [03548] shall pronounce him unclean [02930]: it is the plague [05061] of leprosy [06883].
26 But if the priest [03548] look [07200] on it, and, behold, there be no white [03836] hair [08181] in the bright spot [0934], and it be no lower [08217] than the other skin [05785], but be somewhat dark [03544]; then the priest [03548] shall shut [05462] him up seven [07651] days [03117]:
27 And the priest [03548] shall look [07200] upon him the seventh [07637] day [03117]: and if it be spread much [06581] abroad [06581] in the skin [05785], then the priest [03548] shall pronounce him unclean [02930]: it is the plague [05061] of leprosy [06883].
28 And if the bright [0934] spot [0934] stay [05975] in his place, and spread [06581] not in the skin [05785], but it be somewhat dark [03544]; it is a rising [07613] of the burning [04348], and the priest [03548] shall pronounce him clean [02891]: for it is an inflammation [06867] of the burning [04348].
18 The flesh [01320] also, in which [03588], even in the skin [05785] thereof, was a boil [07822], and is healed [07495],

20 And if, when the priest [03548] seeth [07200] it, behold, it be in sight [04758] lower [08217] than the skin [05785], and the hair [08181] thereof be turned [02015] white [03836]; the priest [03548] shall pronounce him unclean [02930]: it is a plague [05061] of leprosy [06883] broken [06524] out of the boil [07822].
21 But if the priest [03548] look [07200] on it, and, behold, there be no white [03836] hairs [08181] therein, and if it be not lower [08217] than the skin [05785], but be somewhat dark [03544]; then the priest [03548] shall shut [05462] him up seven [07651] days [03117]:
22 And if it spread much [06581] abroad [06581] in the skin [05785], then the priest [03548] shall pronounce him unclean [02930]: it is a plague [05061].
