A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
NADAB AND ABIHU BURNT. (Lev. 10:1-20)

the sons of Aaron, &c.--If this incident occurred at the solemn period of the consecrating and dedicating the altar, these young men assumed an office which had been committed to Moses; or if it were some time after, it was an encroachment on duties which devolved on their father alone as the high priest. But the offense was of a far more aggravated nature than such a mere informality would imply. It consisted not only in their venturing unauthorized to perform the incense service--the highest and most solemn of the priestly offices--not only in their engaging together in a work which was the duty only of one, but in their presuming to intrude into the holy of holies, to which access was denied to all but the high priest alone. In this respect, "they offered strange fire before the Lord"; they were guilty of a presumptuous and unwarranted intrusion into a sacred office which did not belong to them. But their offense was more aggravated still; for instead of taking the fire which was put into their censers from the brazen altar, they seem to have been content with common fire and thus perpetrated an act which, considering the descent of the miraculous fire they had so recently witnessed and the solemn obligation under which they were laid to make use of that which was specially appropriated to the service of the altars, they betrayed a carelessness, an irreverence, a want of faith, most surprising and lamentable. A precedent of such evil tendency was dangerous, and it was imperatively necessary, therefore, as well for the priests themselves as for the sacred things, that a marked expression of the divine displeasure should be given for doing that which "God commanded them not."

24 And there came [03318] a fire [0784] out from before [06440] the LORD [03068], and consumed [0398] upon the altar [04196] the burnt offering [05930] and the fat [02459]: which when all the people [05971] saw [07200], they shouted [07442], and fell [05307] on their faces [06440].
9 Do not drink [08354] wine [03196] nor strong drink [07941], thou, nor thy sons [01121] with thee, when ye go [0935] into the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], lest ye die [04191]: it shall be a statute [02708] for ever [05769] throughout your generations [01755]:
38 And the tongs [04457] thereof, and the snuffdishes [04289] thereof, shall be of pure [02889] gold [02091].
1 And he said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Come up [05927] unto the LORD [03068], thou, and Aaron [0175], Nadab [05070], and Abihu [030], and seventy [07657] of the elders [02205] of Israel [03478]; and worship [07812] ye afar off [07350].
2 And Moses [04872] alone shall come near [05066] the LORD [03068]: but they shall not come nigh [05066]; neither shall the people [05971] go up [05927] with him.
2 And these are the names [08034] of the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175]; Nadab [05070] the firstborn [01060], and Abihu [030], Eleazar [0499], and Ithamar [0385].
23 And Aaron [0175] took [03947] him Elisheba [0472], daughter [01323] of Amminadab [05992], sister [0269] of Naashon [05177], to wife [0802]; and she bare [03205] him Nadab [05070], and Abihu [030], Eleazar [0499], and Ithamar [0385].
23 Which things [3748] have [2192] indeed [3303] a shew [2076] [3056] of wisdom [4678] in [1722] will worship [1479], and [2532] humility [5012], and [2532] neglecting [857] of the body [4983]; not [3756] in [1722] any [5100] honour [5092] to [4314] the satisfying [4140] of the flesh [4561].
12 And he shall take [03947] a censer [04289] full [04393] of burning [0784] coals [01513] of fire [0784] from off the altar [04196] before [06440] the LORD [03068], and his hands [02651] full [04393] of sweet [05561] incense [07004] beaten small [01851], and bring [0935] it within [01004] the vail [06532]:
12 And the fire [0784] upon the altar [04196] shall be burning [03344] in it; it shall not be put out [03518]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [01197] wood [06086] on it every morning [01242], and lay the burnt offering [05930] in order [06186] upon it; and he shall burn [06999] thereon the fat [02459] of the peace offerings [08002].
16 And thou shalt come up [05927] against my people [05971] of Israel [03478], as a cloud [06051] to cover [03680] the land [0776]; it shall be in the latter [0319] days [03117], and I will bring [0935] thee against my land [0776], that the heathen [01471] may know [03045] me, when I shall be sanctified [06942] in thee, O Gog [01463], before their eyes [05869].
15 And thou shalt anoint [04886] them, as thou didst anoint [04886] their father [01], that they may minister unto me in the priest's office [03547]: for their anointing [04888] shall surely be an everlasting [05769] priesthood [03550] throughout their generations [01755].
13 And thou shalt put [03847] upon Aaron [0175] the holy [06944] garments [0899], and anoint [04886] him, and sanctify [06942] him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office [03547].
44 And I will sanctify [06942] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], and the altar [04196]: I will sanctify [06942] also both Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121], to minister to me in the priest's office [03547].
1 And this is the thing [01697] that thou shalt do [06213] unto them to hallow [06942] them, to minister unto me in the priest's office [03547]: Take [03947] one [0259] young [01121] [01241] bullock [06499], and two [08147] rams [0352] without blemish [08549],
12 And he poured [03332] of the anointing [04888] oil [08081] upon Aaron's [0175] head [07218], and anointed [04886] him, to sanctify [06942] him.
10 And Moses [04872] took [03947] the anointing [04888] oil [08081], and anointed [04886] the tabernacle [04908] and all that was therein, and sanctified [06942] them.
19 And thou shalt give [05414] to the priests [03548] the Levites [03881] that be of the seed [02233] of Zadok [06659], which approach [07138] unto me, to minister [08334] unto me, saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], a young [01121] [01241] bullock [06499] for a sin offering [02403].
13 Then said [0559] he unto me, The north [06828] chambers [03957] and the south [01864] chambers [03957], which are before [06440] the separate place [01508], they be holy [06944] chambers [03957], where the priests [03548] that approach [07138] unto the LORD [03068] shall eat [0398] the most [06944] holy things [06944]: there shall they lay [03240] the most [06944] holy things [06944], and the meat offering [04503], and the sin offering [02403], and the trespass offering [0817]; for the place [04725] is holy [06918].
5 And he spake [01696] unto Korah [07141] and unto all his company [05712], saying [0559], Even to morrow [01242] the LORD [03068] will shew [03045] who are his, and who is holy [06918]; and will cause him to come near [07126] unto him: even him whom he hath chosen [0977] will he cause to come near [07126] unto him.
17 And I, behold, I will harden [02388] the hearts [03820] of the Egyptians [04714], and they shall follow [0935] them [0310]: and I will get me honour [03513] upon Pharaoh [06547], and upon all his host [02428], upon his chariots [07393], and upon his horsemen [06571].
4 And I will harden [02388] Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820], that he shall follow [07291] after [0310] them; and I will be honoured [03513] upon Pharaoh [06547], and upon all his host [02428]; that the Egyptians [04714] may know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068]. And they did [06213] so.
3 Then Moses [04872] said [0559] unto Aaron [0175], This is it that the LORD [03068] spake [01696], saying [0559], I will be sanctified [06942] in them that come nigh [07138] me, and before [06440] all the people [05971] I will be glorified [03513]. And Aaron [0175] held his peace [01826].
16 To [3739] the one [3303] we are the savour [3744] of death [2288] unto [1519] death [2288]; and [1161] to the other [3739] the savour [3744] of life [2222] unto [1519] life [2222]. And [2532] who [5101] is sufficient [2425] for [4314] these things [5023]?
18 And mount [02022] Sinai [05514] was altogether on a smoke [06225], because [06440] [0834] the LORD [03068] descended [03381] upon it in fire [0784]: and the smoke [06227] thereof ascended [05927] as the smoke [06227] of a furnace [03536], and the whole mount [02022] quaked [02729] greatly [03966].
4 And Moses [04872] called [07121] Mishael [04332] and Elzaphan [0469], the sons [01121] of Uzziel [05816] the uncle [01730] of Aaron [0175], and said [0559] unto them, Come near [07126], carry [05375] your brethren [0251] from before [06440] the sanctuary [06944] out [02351] of the camp [04264].
5 And he shall kill [07819] the bullock [01121] [01241] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall bring [07126] the blood [01818], and sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196] that is by the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
13 And he shall put [05414] the incense [07004] upon the fire [0784] before [06440] the LORD [03068], that the cloud [06051] of the incense [07004] may cover [03680] the mercy seat [03727] that is upon the testimony [05715], that he die [04191] not:
6 And the priest [03548] shall dip [02881] his finger [0676] in the blood [01818], and sprinkle [05137] of the blood [01818] seven [07651] times [06471] before [06440] the LORD [03068], before [06440] the vail [06532] of the sanctuary [06944].
7 And the priest [03548] shall put [05414] some of the blood [01818] upon the horns [07161] of the altar [04196] of sweet [05561] incense [07004] before [06440] the LORD [03068], which is in the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]; and shall pour [08210] all the blood [01818] of the bullock [06499] at the bottom [03247] of the altar [04196] of the burnt offering [05930], which is at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
16 And Moses [04872] diligently [01875] sought [01875] the goat [08163] of the sin offering [02403], and, behold, it was burnt [08313]: and he was angry [07107] with Eleazar [0499] and Ithamar [0385], the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175] which were left [03498] alive, saying [0559],
12 And Moses [04872] spake [01696] unto Aaron [0175], and unto Eleazar [0499] and unto Ithamar [0385], his sons [01121] that were left [03498], Take [03947] the meat offering [04503] that remaineth [03498] of the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801], and eat [0398] it without leaven [04682] beside [0681] the altar [04196]: for it is most [06944] holy [06944]:
12 And Moses [04872] spake [01696] unto Aaron [0175], and unto Eleazar [0499] and unto Ithamar [0385], his sons [01121] that were left [03498], Take [03947] the meat offering [04503] that remaineth [03498] of the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801], and eat [0398] it without leaven [04682] beside [0681] the altar [04196]: for it is most [06944] holy [06944]:
9 Ye shall offer [05927] no strange [02114] incense [07004] thereon, nor burnt sacrifice [05930], nor meat offering [04503]; neither shall ye pour [05258] drink offering [05262] thereon.
38 And the tongs [04457] thereof, and the snuffdishes [04289] thereof, shall be of pure [02889] gold [02091].
35 And they built [01129] the high places [01116] of Baal [01168], which are in the valley [01516] of the son [01121] of Hinnom [02011], to cause their sons [01121] and their daughters [01323] to pass [05674] through the fire unto Molech [04432]; which I commanded [06680] them not, neither came [05927] it into my mind [03820], that they should do [06213] this abomination [08441], to cause Judah [03063] to sin [02398].
19 And [2532] if [1437] any man [5100] shall take away [851] from [575] the words [3056] of the book [976] of this [5129] prophecy [4394], God [2316] shall take away [851] his [846] part [3313] out of [575] the book [976] of life [2222], and [2532] out of [1537] the holy [40] city [4172], and [2532] from the things which are written [1125] in [1722] this [5026] book [975].
18 For [1063] I testify [4828] unto every man [3956] that heareth [191] the words [3056] of the prophecy [4394] of this [5127] book [975], If [1437] any man [5100] shall add [2007] unto [4314] these things [5023], God [2316] shall add [2007] unto [1909] him [846] the plagues [4127] that are written [1125] in [1722] this [5129] book [975]:
6 Add [03254] thou not unto his words [01697], lest he reprove [03198] thee, and thou be found a liar [03576].
2 Ye shall not add [03254] unto the word [01697] which I command [06680] you, neither shall ye diminish [01639] ought from it, that ye may keep [08104] the commandments [04687] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430] which I command [06680] you.
5 Who [3748] serve [3000] unto the example [5262] and [2532] shadow [4639] of heavenly things [2032], as [2531] Moses [3475] was admonished of God [5537] when he was about [3195] to make [2005] the tabernacle [4633]: for [1063], See [3708], saith he [5346], that thou make [4160] all things [3956] according to [2596] the pattern [5179] shewed [1166] to thee [4671] in [1722] the mount [3735].
4 And [2532] the smoke [2586] of the incense [2368], which came with the prayers [4335] of the saints [40], ascended up [305] before [1799] God [2316] out of [1537] the angel's [32] hand [5495].
3 And [2532] another [243] angel [32] came [2064] and [2532] stood [2476] at [1909] the altar [2379], having [2192] a golden [5552] censer [3031]; and [2532] there was given [1325] unto him [846] much [4183] incense [2368], that [2443] he should offer [1325] it with the prayers [4335] of all [3956] saints [40] upon [1909] the golden [5552] altar [2379] which [3588] was before [1799] the throne [2362].
24 For [1063] Christ [5547] is [1525] not [3756] entered [1525] into [1519] the holy places [39] made with hands [5499], which are the figures [499] of the true [228]; but [235] into [1519] heaven [3772] itself [846], now [3568] to appear [1718] in the presence [4383] of God [2316] for [5228] us [2257]:
2 A minister [3011] of the sanctuary [39], and [2532] of the true [228] tabernacle [4633], which [3739] the Lord [2962] pitched [4078], and [2532] not [3756] man [444].
1 Now [1161] of [1909] the things which we have spoken [3004] this is the sum [2774]: We have [2192] such [5108] an high priest [749], who [3739] is set [2523] on [1722] the right hand [1188] of the throne [2362] of the Majesty [3172] in [1722] the heavens [3772];
34 Who [5101] is he that condemneth [2632]? It is Christ [5547] that died [599], yea [1161] rather [3123] [2532], that is risen again [1453], who [3739] is [2076] even [2532] at [1722] the right hand [1188] of God [2316], who [3739] also [2532] maketh intercession [1793] for [5228] us [2257].
2 Let my prayer [08605] be set forth [03559] before [06440] thee as incense [07004]; and the lifting up [04864] of my hands [03709] as the evening [06153] sacrifice [04503].
10 And [2532] the whole [3956] multitude [4128] of the people [2992] were [2258] praying [4336] without [1854] at the time [5610] of incense [2368].
9 According [2596] to the custom [1485] of the priest's office [2405], his lot [2975] was to burn incense [2370] when he went [1525] into [1519] the temple [3485] of the Lord [2962].
