Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
a burnt sacrifice--so called from its being wholly consumed on the altar; no part of it was eaten either by the priests or the offerer. It was designed to propitiate the anger of God incurred by original sin, or by particular transgressions; and its entire combustion indicated the self-dedication of the offerer--his whole nature--his body and soul--as necessary to form a sacrifice acceptable to God (Rom 12:1; Phi 1:20). This was the most ancient as well as the most conspicuous mode of sacrifice.
a male without blemish--No animal was allowed to be offered that had any deformity or defect. Among the Egyptians, a minute inspection was made by the priest; and the bullock having been declared perfect, a certificate to that effect being fastened to its horns with wax, was sealed with his ring, and no other might be substituted. A similar process of examining the condition of the beasts brought as offerings, seems to have been adopted by the priests in Israel (Joh 6:27).
at the door of the tabernacle--where stood the altar of burnt offering (Exo 40:6). Every other place was forbidden, under the highest penalty (Lev 17:4). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
burnt - literally, that (offering) which ascends (as a flame).
A male without blemish - Males were required in most offerings, since the stronger sex which takes precedence of the other. But females were allowed in peace-offerings Lev 3:1, Lev 3:6, and were expressly prescribed in the sin-offerings of the common people Lev 4:28, Lev 4:32; Lev 5:6.
At the door of the tabernacle of the congregation - Wherever these words occur, they should be rendered: "at the entrance of the tent of meeting." The place denoted is that part of the court which was in front of the tabernacle, in which stood the brass altar and the laver, and where alone sacrifices could be offered. See Cut to Exo. 26. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
burnt-sacrifice
The burnt-offering
1. typifies Christ offering Himself without spot to God in delight to do His Father's will even in death.
2. it is atoning because the believer has not had this delight in the will of God; and
3. substitutionary (Lev 1:4) because Christ did it in the sinner's stead. But the thought of penalty is not prominent. (Heb 9:11-14); (Heb 10:5-7); (Psa 40:6-8); (Phi 2:8). The emphatic words (Lev 1:3-5) are "burnt-sacrifice," "voluntary," "it shall be accepted for him," and "atonement." The creatures acceptable for sacrifice are five:
(1) The bullock, or ox, typifies Christ as the patient and enduring Servant (Co1 9:9); (Co1 9:10); (Heb 12:2); (Heb 12:3) "obedient unto death"; (Isa 52:13-15); (Phi 2:5-8). His offering in this character is substitutionary, for this we have not been.
(2) The sheep, or lamb, typifies Christ in unresisting self-surrender to the death of the cross (Isa 53:7); (Act 8:32-35).
(3) The goat typifies the sinner (Mat 25:33) and, when used sacrificially, Christ, as "numbered with the transgressors"; (Isa 53:12); (Luk 23:33) and "made sin," and "a curse"; (Gal 3:13); (Co2 5:21) as the sinner's substitute.
(4, 5) The turtle-dove or pigeon. Naturally a symbol of mourning innocency (Isa 38:14); (Isa 59:11); (Mat 23:37); (Heb 7:26) is associated with poverty in (Lev 5:7) and speaks of Him who for our sakes become poor (Luk 9:58) and whose pathway of poverty which began with laying aside "the form of God," ended in the sacrifice through which we became rich; (Co2 8:9); (Phi 2:6-8). The sacrifice of the poor Man becomes the poor man's sacrifice. (Luk 2:24). These grades of typical sacrifice test the measure of our apprehension of the varied aspects of Christ's one sacrifice on the cross. The mature believer should see Christ crucified in all these aspects. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Ceremonial connected with the offering of an ox as a burnt-offering. עלה (vid., Gen 8:20) is generally rendered by the lxx ὁλοκαύτωμα or ὁλοκαύτωσις, sometimes ὁλοκάρπωμα or ὁλοκάρπωσις, in the Vulgate holocaustum, because the animal was all consumed upon the altar. The ox was to be a male without blemish (ἄμωμος, integer; i.e., free from bodily faults, see Lev 22:19-25), and to be presented "at the door of the tabernacle," - i.e., near to the altar of burnt-offering (Exo 40:6), where all the offerings were to be presented (Lev 17:8-9), - "for good pleasure for him (the offerer) before Jehovah," i.e., that the sacrifice might secure to him the good pleasure of God (Exo 28:38).
Lev 1:4
"he (the offerer) shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering." The laying on of hands, by which, to judge from the verb סמך to lean upon, we are to understand a forcible pressure of the hand upon the head of the victim, took place in connection with all the slain-offerings (the offering of pigeons perhaps excepted), and is expressly enjoined in the laws for the burnt-offerings, the peace-offerings (Lev 3:2, Lev 3:7, Lev 3:13), and the sin-offerings (Lev 4:4, Lev 4:15, Lev 4:24, Lev 4:29, Lev 4:33), that is to say, in every case in which the details of the ceremonial are minutely described. But if the description is condensed, then no allusion is made to it: e.g., in the burnt-offering of sheep and goats (Lev 1:11), the sin-offering (Lev 5:6), and the trespass-offering (Lev 5:15, Lev 5:18, 25). This ceremony was not a sign of the removal of something from his own power and possession, or the surrender and dedication of it to God, as Rosenmller and Knobel
(Note: Hence Knobel's assertion (at Lev 7:2), that the laying on of the hand upon the head of the animal, which is prescribed in the case of all the other sacrifices, was omitted in that of the trespass-offering alone, needs correction, and there is no foundation for the conclusion, that it did not take place in connection with the trespass-offering.)
affirm; nor an indication of ownership and of a readiness to give up his own to Jehovah, as Bhr maintains; nor a symbol of the imputation of sin, as Kurtz supposes:
(Note: This was the view held by some of the Rabbins and of the earlier theologians, e.g., Calovius, bibl. ill. ad Lev. i. 4, Lundius and others, but by no means by "most of the Rabbins, some of the fathers, and most of the earlier archaeologists and doctrinal writers," as is affirmed by Bhr (ii. p. 336), who supports his assertion by passages from Outram, which refer to the sin-offering only, but which Bhr transfers without reserve to all the bleeding sacrifices, thus confounding substitution with the imputation of sin, in his antipathy to the orthodox doctrine of satisfaction. Outram's general view of this ceremony is expressed clearly enough in the following passages: "ritus erat ea notandi ac designandi, quae vel morti devota erant, vel Dei gratiae commendata, vel denique gravi alicui muneri usuique sacro destinata. Eique ritui semper adhiberi solebant verba aliqua explicata, quae rei susceptae rationi maxime congruere viderentur" (l.c. 8 and 9). With reference to the words which explained the imposition of hands he observes: "ita ut sacris piacularibus culparum potissimum confessiones cum poenae deprecatione junctas, voluntariis bonorum precationes, eucharisticus autem et votivis post res prosperas impetratas periculave depulsa factis laudes et gratiarum actiones, omnique denique victimarum generi ejusmodi preces adjunctas putem, quae cuique maxime conveniebant" (c. 9).)
but the symbol of a transfer of the feelings and intentions by which the offerer was actuated in presenting his sacrifice, whereby he set apart the animal as a sacrifice, representing his own person in one particular aspect. Now, so far as the burnt-offering expressed the intention of the offerer to consecrate his life and labour to the Lord, and his desire to obtain the expiation of the sin which still clung to all his works and desires, in order that they might become well-pleasing to God, he transferred the consciousness of his sinfulness to the victim by the laying on of hands, even in the case of the burnt-offering. But this was not all: he also transferred the desire to walk before God in holiness and righteousness, which he could not do without the grace of God. This, and no more than this, is contained in the words, "that it may become well-pleasing to him, to make atonement for him." כּפּר with Seghol (Ges. 52), to expiate (from the Kal כּפר, which is not met with in Hebrew, the word in Gen 6:14 being merely a denom. verb, but which signifies texit in Arabic), is generally construed with על like verbs of covering, and in the laws of sacrifice with the person as the object ("for him," Lev 4:26, Lev 4:31, Lev 4:35; Lev 5:6, Lev 5:10., Lev 14:20, Lev 14:29, etc.; "for them," Lev 4:20; Lev 10:17; "for her," Lev 12:7; for a soul, Lev 17:11; Exo 30:15, cf. Num 8:12), and in the case of the sin-offerings with a second object governed either by על or מן (חטּאתו על עליו Lev 4:35; Lev 5:13, Lev 5:18, or מחטּאתו עליו Lev 4:26; Lev 5:6, etc., to expiate him over or on account of his sin); also, though not so frequently, with בּעד pers., ἐξιλάζεσθαι περὶ αὐτοῦ (Lev 16:6, Lev 16:24; Ch2 30:18), and חטּאת בּעד, ἐξιλάζεσθαι περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας (Exo 32:30), and with ל pers., to permit expiation to be made (Deu 21:8; Eze 16:63); also with the accusative of the object, though in prose only in connection with the expiation of inanimate objects defiled by sin (Lev 16:33).
The expiation was always made or completed by the priest, as the sanctified mediator between Jehovah and the people, or, previous to the institution of the Aaronic priesthood, by Moses, the chosen mediator of the covenant, not by "Jehovah from whom the expiation proceeded," as Bhr supposes. For although all expiation has its ultimate foundation in the grace of God, which desires not the death of the sinner, but his redemption and salvation, and to this end has opened a way of salvation, and sanctified sacrifice as the means of expiation and mercy; it is not Jehovah who makes the expiation, but this is invariably the office or work of a mediator, who intervenes between the holy God and sinful man, and by means of expiation averts the wrath of God from the sinner, and brings the grace of God to bear upon him. It is only in cases where the word is used in the secondary sense of pardoning sin, or showing mercy, that God is mentioned as the subject (e.g., Deu 21:8; Psa 65:4; Psa 78:38; Jer 17:23).
(Note: The meaning "to make atonement" lies at the foundation in every passage in which the word is used metaphorically, such as Gen 32:21, where Jacob seeks to expiate the face of his angry brother, i.e., to appease his wrath, with a present; or Pro 16:14, "the wrath of a king is as messengers of death, but a wise man expiates it, i.e., softens, pacifies it;" Isa 47:11, "Mischief (destruction) will fall upon thee, thou will not be able to expiate it," that is to say, to avert the wrath of God, which has burst upon thee in the calamity, by means of an expiatory sacrifice. Even in Isa 28:18, "and your covenant with death is disannulled" (annihilated) (וכפּר), the use of the word כפר is to be explained from the fact that the guilt, which brought the judgment in its train, could be cancelled by a sacrificial expiation (cf. Isa 6:7 and Isa 22:14); so that there is no necessity to resort to a meaning which is altogether foreign to the word, viz., that of covering up by blotting over. When Hoffmann therefore maintains that there is no other way of explaining the use of the word in these passages, than by the supposition that, in addition to the verb כפר to cover, there was another denominative verb, founded upon the word כּפר a covering, or payment, the stumblingblock in the use of the word lies simply this, that Hoffmann has taken a one-sided view of the idea of expiation, through overlooking the fact, that the expiation had reference to the wrath of God which hung over the sinner and had to be averted from him by means of expiation, as is clearly proved by Exo 32:30 as compared with Exo 32:10 and Exo 32:22. The meaning of expiation which properly belongs to the verb כּפּר is not only retained in the nouns cippurim and capporeth, but lies at the root of the word copher, which is formed from the Kal, as we may clearly see from Exo 30:12-16, where the Israelites are ordered to pay a copher at the census, to expiate their souls, i.e., to cover their souls from the death which threatens the unholy, when he draws near without expiation to a holy God. Vid., Oehler in Herzog's Cycl.)
The medium of expiation in the case of the sacrifice was chiefly the blood of the sacrificial animal that was sprinkled upon the altar (Lev 17:11); in addition to which, the eating of the flesh of the sin-offering by the priests is also called bearing the iniquity of the congregation to make atonement for them (Lev 10:17). In other cases it was the intercession of Moses (Exo 32:30); also the fumigation with holy incense, which was a symbol of priestly intercession (Num 17:11). On one occasion it was the zeal of Phinehas, when he stabbed the Israelite with a spear for committing fornication with a Midianite (Num 25:8, Num 25:13). In the case of a murder committed by an unknown hand, it was the slaying of an animal in the place of the murderer who remained undiscovered (Deu 21:1-9); whereas in other cases blood-guiltiness (murder) could not be expiated in any other way than by the blood of the person by whom it had been shed (Num 35:33). In Isa 27:9, a divine judgment, by which the nation was punished, is so described, as serving to avert the complete destruction which threatened it. And lastly, it was in some cases a כּפר, such, for example, as the atonement-money paid at the numbering of the people (Exo 30:12.), and the payment made in the case referred to in Exo 21:30.
If, therefore, the idea of satisfaction unquestionably lay at the foundation of the atonement that was made, in all those cases in which it was effected by a penal judgment, or judicial poena; the intercession of the priest, or the fumigation which embodied it, cannot possibly be regarded as a satisfaction rendered to the justice of God, so that we cannot attribute the idea of satisfaction to every kind of sacrificial expiation. Still less can it be discerned in the slaying of the animal, when simply regarded as the shedding of blood. To this we may add, that in the laws for the sin-offering there is no reference at all to expiation; and in the case of the burnt-offering, the laying on of hands is described as the act by which it was to become well-pleasing to God, and to expiate the offerer. Now, if the laying on of hands was accompanied with a prayer, as the Jewish tradition affirms, and as we may most certainly infer from Deu 26:13, apart altogether from Lev 16:21, although no prayer is expressly enjoined; then in the case of the burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, it is in this prayer, or the imposition of hands which symbolized it, and by which the offerer substituted the sacrifice for himself and penetrated it with his spirit, that we must seek for the condition upon which the well-pleased acceptance of the sacrifice on the part of Fog depended, and in consequence of which it became an atonement for him; in other words, was fitted to cover him in the presence of the holiness of God.
Lev 1:5-9
The laying on of hands was followed by the slaughtering (שׁחט, never המית to put to death), which was performed by the offerer himself in the case of the private sacrifices, and by the priests and Levites in that of the national and festal offerings (Ch2 29:22, Ch2 29:24, Ch2 29:34). The slaughtering took place "before Jehovah" (see Lev 1:3), or, according to the more precise account in Lev 1:11, on the side of the altar northward, for which the expression "before the door of the tabernacle" is sometimes used (Lev 3:2, Lev 3:8, Lev 3:13, etc.). בּקר בּן (a young ox) is applied to a calf (עגל) in Lev 9:2, and a mature young bull (פּר) in Lev 4:3, Lev 4:14. But the animal of one year old is called עגל in Lev 9:2, and the mature ox of seven years old is called פּר in Jdg 6:25. At the slaughtering the blood was caught by the priests (Ch2 29:22), and sprinkled upon the altar. When the sacrifices were very numerous, as at the yearly feasts, the Levites helped to catch the blood (Ch2 30:16); but the sprinkling upon the altar was always performed by the priests alone. In the case of the burnt-offerings, the blood was swung "against the altar round about," i.e., against all four sides (walls) of the altar (not "over the surface of the altar"); i.e., it was poured out of the vessel against the walls of the altar with a swinging motion. This was also done when peace-offerings (Lev 3:2, Lev 3:8, Lev 3:13; Lev 9:18) and trespass-offerings (Lev 7:2) were sacrificed; but it was not so with the sin-offering (see at Lev 4:5).
Lev 1:6
The offerer was then to flay the slaughtered animal, to cut it (נתּח generally rendered μελίζειν in the lxx) into its pieces, - i.e., to cut it up into the different pieces, into which an animal that has been killed is generally divided, namely, according to the separate joints, or "according to the bones" (Jdg 19:29), - that he might boil its flesh in pots (Eze 24:4, Eze 24:6). He was also to wash its intestines and the lower part of its legs (Lev 1:9). קרב, the inner part of the body, or the contents of the inner part of the body, signifies the viscera; not including those of the breast, however, such as the lungs, heart, and liver, to which the term is also applied in other cases (for in the case of the peace-offerings, when the fat which envelopes the intestines, the kidneys, and the liver-lobes was to be placed upon the altar, there is no washing spoken of), but the intestines of the abdomen or belly, such as the stomach and bowels, which would necessarily have to be thoroughly cleansed, even when they were about to be used as food. כּרעים, which is only found in the dual, and always in connection either with oxen and sheep, or with the springing legs of locusts (Lev 11:21), denotes the shin, or calf below the knee, or the leg from the knee down to the foot.
Lev 1:7-9
It was the duty of the sons of Aaron, i.e., of the priests, to offer the sacrifice upon the altar. To this end they were to "put fire upon the altar" (of course this only applies to the first burnt-offering presented after the erection of the altar, as the fire was to be constantly burning upon the altar after that, without being allowed to go out, Lev 6:6), and to lay "wood in order upon the fire" (ערך to lay in regular order), and then to "lay the parts, the head and the fat, in order upon the wood on the fire," and thus to cause the whole to ascend in smoke. פּדר, which is only used in connection with the burnt-offering (Lev 1:8, Lev 1:12, and Lev 8:20), signifies, according to the ancient versions (lxx στέαρ) and the rabbinical writers, the fat, probably those portions of fat which were separated from the entrails and taken out to wash. Bochart's explanation is adeps a carne sejunctus. The head and fat are specially mentioned along with the pieces of flesh, partly because they are both separated from the flesh when animals are slaughtered, and partly also to point out distinctly that the whole of the animal ("all," Lev 1:9) was to be burned upon the altar, with the exception of the skin, which was given to the officiating priest (Lev 7:8), and the contents of the intestines. הקטיר, to cause to ascend in smoke and steam (Exo 30:7), which is frequently construed with המּזבּחה towards the altar (ה local, so used as to include position in a place; vid., Lev 1:13, Lev 1:15, Lev 1:17; Lev 2:2, Lev 2:9, etc.), or with המּזבּח (Lev 6:8), or על־המּזבּח (Lev 9:13, Lev 9:17), was the technical expression for burning the sacrifice upon the altar, and showed that the intention was not simply to burn those portions of the sacrifice which were placed in the fire, i.e., to destroy, or turn them into ashes, but by this process of burning to cause the odour which was eliminated to ascend to heaven as the ethereal essence of the sacrifice, for a "firing of a sweet savour unto Jehovah." אשּׁה, firing ("an offering made by fire," Eng. Ver.), is the general expression used to denote the sacrifices, which ascended in fire upon the altar, whether animal or vegetable (Lev 2:2, Lev 2:11, Lev 2:16), and is also applied to the incense laid upon the shew-bread (Lev 24:7); and hence the shew-bread itself (Lev 24:7), and even those portions of the sacrifices which Jehovah assigned to the priests for them to eat (Deu 18:1 cf. Jos 13:14), came also to be included in the firings for Jehovah. The word does not occur out of the Pentateuch, except in Jos 13:14 and Sa1 2:28. In the laws of sacrifice it is generally associated with the expression, "a sweet savour unto Jehovah" (ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας: lxx): an anthropomorphic description of the divine satisfaction with the sacrifices offered, or the gracious acceptance of them on the part of God (see Gen 8:21), which is used in connection with all the sacrifices, even the expiatory or sin-offerings (Lev 4:31), and with the drink-offering also (Num 15:7, Num 15:10). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
A burnt sacrifice - Strictly so called, such as was to be all burnt, the skin excepted. For every sacrifice was burnt, more or less. The sacrifices signified that the whole man, in whose stead the sacrifice was offered, was to be entirely offered or devoted to God's service; and that the whole man did deserve to be utterly consumed, if God should deal severely with him; and directed us to serve the Lord with all singleness of heart, and to be ready to offer to God even such sacrifices or services wherein we ourselves should have no part or benefit. A male - As being more perfect than the female, Mal 1:14, and more truly representing Christ. Without blemish - To signify, That God should he served with the best of every kind. That man, represented by these sacrifices, should aim at all perfection of heart and life, and that Christians should one day attain to it, Eph 5:27. The spotless and compleat holiness of Christ. Of his own will - According to this translation, the place speaks only of free - will offerings, or such as were not prescribed by God to be offered in course, but were offered by the voluntary devotion of any person, either by way of supplication for any mercy, or by way of thanksgiving for any blessing received. But it may seem improper to restrain the rules here given to free - will offerings, which were to be observed in other offerings also. At the door - In the court near the door, where the altar stood, Lev 1:5. For here it was to be sacrificed, and here the people might behold the oblation of it. And this farther signified, that men could have no entrance, neither into the earthly tabernacle, the church, nor into the heavenly tabernacle of glory, but by Christ, who is the door, Joh 10:7, Joh 10:9, by whom alone we have access to God. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Burnt-sacrifice - The most important of all the sacrifices offered to God; called by the Septuagint ὁλοκαυτωμα, because it was wholly consumed, which was not the case in any other offering. See on Leviticus 7 (note).
His own voluntary will - לרצנו lirtsono, to gain himself acceptance before the Lord: in this way all the versions appear to have understood the original words, and the connection in which they stand obviously requires this meaning. |

28 Or if his sin [02403], which he hath sinned [02398], come to his knowledge [03045]: then he shall bring [0935] his offering [07133], a kid [08166] of the goats [05795], a female [05347] without blemish [08549], for his sin [02403] which he hath sinned [02398].
6 And if his offering [07133] for a sacrifice [02077] of peace offering [08002] unto the LORD [03068] be of the flock [06629]; male [02145] or female [05347], he shall offer [07126] it without blemish [08549].
1 And if his oblation [07133] be a sacrifice [02077] of peace offering [08002], if he offer [07126] it of the herd [01241]; whether it be a male [02145] or female [05347], he shall offer [07126] it without blemish [08549] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
24 And [2532] to offer [1325] a sacrifice [2378] according [2596] to that which is said [2046] in [1722] the law [3551] of the Lord [2962], A pair [2201] of turtledoves [5167], or [2228] two [1417] young [3502] pigeons [4058].
6 Who [3739], being [5225] in [1722] the form [3444] of God [2316], thought it [2233] not [3756] robbery [725] to be [1511] equal [2470] with God [2316]:
7 But [235] made [2758] himself [1438] of no reputation [2758], and took upon him [2983] the form [3444] of a servant [1401], and was made [1096] in [1722] the likeness [3667] of men [444]:
8 And [2532] being found [2147] in fashion [4976] as [5613] a man [444], he humbled [5013] himself [1438], and became [1096] obedient [5255] unto [3360] death [2288], even [1161] the death [2288] of the cross [4716].
9 For [1063] ye know [1097] the grace [5485] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], that [3754], though he was [5607] rich [4145], yet for [1223] your [5209] sakes [1223] he became poor [4433], that [2443] ye [5210] through his [1565] poverty [4432] might be rich [4147].
58 And [2532] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto him [846], Foxes [258] have [2192] holes [5454], and [2532] birds [4071] of the air [3772] have nests [2682]; but [1161] the Son [5207] of man [444] hath [2192] not [3756] where [4226] to lay [2827] his head [2776].
7 And if he [03027] be not able [01767] to bring [05060] a lamb [07716], then he shall bring [0935] for [0854] his trespass [0817], which he hath committed [02398], two [08147] turtledoves [08449], or two [08147] young [01121] pigeons [03123], unto the LORD [03068]; one [0259] for a sin offering [02403], and the other [0259] for a burnt offering [05930].
26 For [1063] such [5108] an high priest [749] became [4241] us [2254], who is holy [3741], harmless [172], undefiled [283], separate [5563] from [575] sinners [268], and [2532] made [1096] higher than [5308] the heavens [3772];
37 O Jerusalem [2419], Jerusalem [2419], thou that killest [615] the prophets [4396], and [2532] stonest [3036] them which are sent [649] unto [4314] thee [846], how often [4212] would I [2309] have gathered [1996] thy [4675] [3739] children [5043] together [1996], even as [5158] a hen [3733] gathereth [1996] her [1438] chickens [3556] under [5259] her wings [4420], and [2532] ye would [2309] not [3756]!
11 We roar [01993] all like bears [01677], and mourn [01897] sore [01897] like doves [03123]: we look [06960] for judgment [04941], but there is none; for salvation [03444], but it is far off [07368] from us.
14 Like a crane [05483] or a swallow [05693], so did I chatter [06850]: I did mourn [01897] as a dove [03123]: mine eyes [05869] fail [01809] with looking upward [04791]: O LORD [03068], I am oppressed [06234]; undertake [06148] for me.
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
13 Christ [5547] hath redeemed [1805] us [2248] from [1537] the curse [2671] of the law [3551], being made [1096] a curse [2671] for [5228] us [2257]: for [1063] it is written [1125], Cursed [1944] is every one [3956] that hangeth [2910] on [1909] a tree [3586]:
33 And [2532] when [3753] they were come [565] to [1909] the place [5117], which [3588] is called [2564] Calvary [2898], there [1563] they crucified [4717] him [846], and [2532] the malefactors [2557], one [3739] [3303] on [1537] the right hand [1188], and [1161] the other [3739] on [1537] the left [710].
12 Therefore will I divide [02505] him a portion with the great [07227], and he shall divide [02505] the spoil [07998] with the strong [06099]; because he hath poured out [06168] his soul [05315] unto death [04194]: and he was numbered [04487] with the transgressors [06586]; and he bare [05375] the sin [02399] of many [07227], and made intercession [06293] for the transgressors [06586].
33 And [2532] he shall set [2476] [3303] the sheep [4263] on [1537] his [846] right hand [1188], but [1161] the goats [2055] on [1537] the left [2176].
32 [1161] The place [4042] of the scripture [1124] which [3739] he read [314] was [2258] this [3778], He was led [71] as [5613] a sheep [4263] to [1909] the slaughter [4967]; and [2532] like [5613] a lamb [286] dumb [880] before [1726] his [846] shearer [2751], so [3779] opened he [455] not [3756] his [846] mouth [4750]:
33 In [1722] his [846] humiliation [5014] his [846] judgment [2920] was taken away [142]: and [1161] who [5101] shall declare [1334] his [846] generation [1074]? for [3754] his [846] life [2222] is taken [142] from [575] the earth [1093].
34 And [1161] the eunuch [2135] answered [611] Philip [5376], and said [2036], I pray [1189] thee [4675], of [4012] whom [5101] speaketh [3004] the prophet [4396] this [5124]? of [4012] himself [1438], or [2228] of [4012] some [5100] other man [2087]?
35 Then [1161] Philip [5376] opened [455] his [846] mouth [4750], and [2532] began [756] at [575] the same [5026] scripture [1124], and preached [2097] unto him [846] Jesus [2424].
7 He was oppressed [05065], and he was afflicted [06031], yet he opened [06605] not his mouth [06310]: he is brought [02986] as a lamb [07716] to the slaughter [02874], and as a sheep [07353] before [06440] her shearers [01494] is dumb [0481], so he openeth [06605] not his mouth [06310].
5 [1063] Let [5426] this [5124] mind be [5426] in [1722] you [5213], which [3739] was also [2532] in [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424]:
13 Behold, my servant [05650] shall deal prudently [07919], he shall be exalted [07311] and extolled [05375], and be very [03966] high [01361].
14 As many [07227] were astonied [08074] at thee; his visage [04758] was so marred [04893] more than any man [0376], and his form [08389] more than the sons [01121] of men [0120]:
15 So shall he sprinkle [05137] many [07227] nations [01471]; the kings [04428] shall shut [07092] their mouths [06310] at him: for that which had not been told [05608] them shall they see [07200]; and that which they had not heard [08085] shall they consider [0995].
3 For [1063] consider [357] him that endured [5278] such [5108] contradiction [485] of [5259] sinners [268] against [1519] himself [846], lest [3363] ye be wearied [2577] and faint [1590] in your [5216] minds [5590].
2 Looking [872] unto [1519] Jesus [2424] the author [747] and [2532] finisher [5051] of our faith [4102]; who [3739] for [473] the joy [5479] that was set before [4295] him [846] endured [5278] the cross [4716], despising [2706] the shame [152], and [5037] is set down [2523] at [1722] the right hand [1188] of the throne [2362] of God [2316].
10 Or [2228] saith he [3004] it altogether [3843] for [1223] our [2248] sakes [1223]? For [1223] our [2248] sakes [1223], no doubt [1063], this is written [1125]: that [3754] he that ploweth [722] should [3784] plow [722] in [1909] hope [1680]; and [2532] that he that thresheth [248] in hope [1680] should be partaker [3348] of [1909] his [846] hope [1680].
9 For [1063] it is written [1125] in [1722] the law [3551] of Moses [3475], Thou shalt [5392] not [3756] muzzle [5392] the mouth of the ox [1016] that treadeth out the corn [248]. [3361] Doth [3199] God [2316] take care [3199] for oxen [1016]?
3 If his offering [07133] be a burnt sacrifice [05930] of the herd [01241], let him offer [07126] a male [02145] without blemish [08549]: he shall offer [07126] it of his own voluntary will [07522] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
4 And he shall put [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the burnt offering [05930]; and it shall be accepted [07521] for him to make atonement [03722] for him.
5 And he shall kill [07819] the bullock [01121] [01241] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall bring [07126] the blood [01818], and sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196] that is by the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
8 And [2532] being found [2147] in fashion [4976] as [5613] a man [444], he humbled [5013] himself [1438], and became [1096] obedient [5255] unto [3360] death [2288], even [1161] the death [2288] of the cross [4716].
6 Sacrifice [02077] and offering [04503] thou didst not desire [02654]; mine ears [0241] hast thou opened [03738]: burnt offering [05930] and sin offering [02401] hast thou not required [07592].
7 Then said [0559] I, Lo, I come [0935]: in the volume [04039] of the book [05612] it is written [03789] of me,
8 I delight [02654] to do [06213] thy will [07522], O my God [0430]: yea, thy law [08451] is within [08432] my heart [04578].
5 Wherefore [1352] when he cometh [1525] into [1519] the world [2889], he saith [3004], Sacrifice [2378] and [2532] offering [4376] thou wouldest [2309] not [3756], but [1161] a body [4983] hast thou prepared [2675] me [3427]:
6 In burnt offerings [3646] and [2532] sacrifices for [4012] sin [266] thou hast had [2106] no [3756] pleasure [2106].
7 Then [5119] said I [2036], Lo [2400], I come [2240] (in [1722] the volume [2777] of the book [975] it is written [1125] of [4012] me [1700],) to do [4160] thy [4675] will [2307], O God [2316].
11 But [1161] Christ [5547] being come [3854] an high priest [749] of good things [18] to come [3195], by [1223] a greater [3187] and [2532] more perfect [5046] tabernacle [4633], not [3756] made with hands [5499], that is to say [5123], not [3756] of this [5026] building [2937];
12 Neither [3761] by [1223] the blood [129] of goats [5131] and [2532] calves [3448], but [1161] by [1223] his own [2398] blood [129] he entered in [1525] once [2178] into [1519] the holy place [39], having obtained [2147] eternal [166] redemption [3085] for us.
13 For [1063] if [1487] the blood [129] of bulls [5022] and [2532] of goats [5131], and [2532] the ashes [4700] of an heifer [1151] sprinkling [4472] the unclean [2840], sanctifieth [37] to [4314] the purifying [2514] of the flesh [4561]:
14 How much [4214] more [3123] shall [2511] the blood [129] of Christ [5547], who [3739] through [1223] the eternal [166] Spirit [4151] offered [4374] himself [1438] without spot [299] to God [2316], purge [2511] your [5216] conscience [4893] from [575] dead [3498] works [2041] to [1519] serve [3000] the living [2198] God [2316]?
4 And he shall put [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the burnt offering [05930]; and it shall be accepted [07521] for him to make atonement [03722] for him.
10 And thou shalt bring [07126] for a drink offering [05262] half [02677] an hin [01969] of wine [03196], for an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
7 And for a drink offering [05262] thou shalt offer [07126] the third [07992] part of an hin [01969] of wine [03196], for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
31 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] is taken away [05493] from off the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
21 And the LORD [03068] smelled [07306] a sweet [05207] savour [07381]; and the LORD [03068] said [0559] in [0413] his heart [03820], I will not again [03254] curse [07043] the ground [0127] any more for man's [0120] sake [05668]; for the imagination [03336] of man's [0120] heart [03820] is evil [07451] from his youth [05271]; neither will I again [03254] smite [05221] any more every thing living [02416], as I have done [06213].
28 And did I choose [0977] him out of all the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478] to be my priest [03548], to offer [05927] upon mine altar [04196], to burn [06999] incense [07004], to wear [05375] an ephod [0646] before [06440] me? and did I give [05414] unto the house [01004] of thy father [01] all the offerings made by fire [0801] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478]?
14 Only unto the tribe [07626] of Levi [03878] he gave [05414] none inheritance [05159]; the sacrifices [0801] of the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] made by fire [0801] are their inheritance [05159], as he said [01696] unto them.
1 The priests [03548] the Levites [03881], and all the tribe [07626] of Levi [03878], shall have no part [02506] nor inheritance [05159] with Israel [03478]: they shall eat [0398] the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801], and his inheritance [05159].
7 And thou shalt put [05414] pure [02134] frankincense [03828] upon each row [04635], that it may be on the bread [03899] for a memorial [0234], even an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
7 And thou shalt put [05414] pure [02134] frankincense [03828] upon each row [04635], that it may be on the bread [03899] for a memorial [0234], even an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
16 And the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] the memorial [0234] of it, part of the beaten corn [01643] thereof, and part of the oil [08081] thereof, with all the frankincense [03828] thereof: it is an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
11 No meat offering [04503], which ye shall bring [07126] unto the LORD [03068], shall be made [06213] with leaven [02557]: for ye shall burn [06999] no leaven [07603], nor any honey [01706], in any offering [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801].
2 And he shall bring [0935] it to Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] the priests [03548]: and he shall take [07061] thereout [08033] his handful [07062] [04393] of the flour [05560] thereof, and of the oil [08081] thereof, with all the frankincense [03828] thereof; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] the memorial [0234] of it upon the altar [04196], to be an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]:
17 And he brought [07126] the meat offering [04503], and took [04390] an handful [03709] thereof, and burnt [06999] it upon the altar [04196], beside [0905] the burnt sacrifice [05930] of the morning [01242].
13 And they presented [04672] the burnt offering [05930] unto him, with the pieces [05409] thereof, and the head [07218]: and he burnt [06999] them upon the altar [04196].
8 And the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto Moses [04872], saying [0559],
9 And the priest [03548] shall take [07311] from the meat offering [04503] a memorial [0234] thereof, and shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196]: it is an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
17 And he shall cleave [08156] it with the wings [03671] thereof, but shall not divide it asunder [0914]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196], upon the wood [06086] that is upon the fire [0784]: it is a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
15 And the priest [03548] shall bring [07126] it unto the altar [04196], and wring off [04454] his head [07218], and burn [06999] it on the altar [04196]; and the blood [01818] thereof shall be wrung out [04680] at the side [07023] of the altar [04196]:
13 But he shall wash [07364] the inwards [07130] and the legs [03767] with water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall bring [07126] it all, and burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196]: it is a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
7 And Aaron [0175] shall burn [06999] thereon sweet [05561] incense [07004] every morning [01242]: when he dresseth [03190] the lamps [05216], he shall burn incense [06999] upon it.
8 And the priest [03548] that offereth [07126] any man's [0376] burnt offering [05930], even the priest [03548] shall have to himself the skin [05785] of the burnt offering [05930] which he hath offered [07126].
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
20 And he cut [05408] the ram [0352] into pieces [05409]; and Moses [04872] burnt [06999] the head [07218], and the pieces [05409], and the fat [06309].
12 And he shall cut [05408] it into his pieces [05409], with his head [07218] and his fat [06309]: and the priest [03548] shall lay them in order [06186] on the wood [06086] that is on the fire [0784] which is upon the altar [04196]:
8 And the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall lay [06186] the parts [05409], the head [07218], and the fat [06309], in order [06186] upon the wood [06086] that is on the fire [0784] which is upon the altar [04196]:
6 And he shall bring [0935] his trespass offering [0817] unto the LORD [03068], a ram [0352] without blemish [08549] out of the flock [06629], with thy estimation [06187], for a trespass offering [0817], unto the priest [03548]:
7 And the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175] the priest [03548] shall put [05414] fire [0784] upon the altar [04196], and lay the wood [06086] in order [06186] upon the fire [0784]:
8 And the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall lay [06186] the parts [05409], the head [07218], and the fat [06309], in order [06186] upon the wood [06086] that is on the fire [0784] which is upon the altar [04196]:
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
21 Yet these may ye eat [0398] of every flying [05775] creeping [08318] thing that goeth [01980] upon all four [0702], which have legs [03767] above [04605] their feet [07272], to leap [05425] withal [02004] upon the earth [0776];
6 Wherefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Woe [0188] to the bloody [01818] city [05892], to the pot [05518] whose scum [02457] is therein, and whose scum [02457] is not gone out [03318] of it! bring it out [03318] piece [05409] by piece [05409]; let no lot [01486] fall [05307] upon it.
4 Gather [0622] the pieces [05409] thereof into it, even every good [02896] piece [05409], the thigh [03409], and the shoulder [03802]; fill [04390] it with the choice [04005] bones [06106].
29 And when he was come [0935] into his house [01004], he took [03947] a knife [03979], and laid hold [02388] on his concubine [06370], and divided [05408] her, together with her bones [06106], into twelve [08147] [06240] pieces [05409], and sent [07971] her into all the coasts [01366] of Israel [03478].
6 And he shall flay [06584] the burnt offering [05930], and cut [05408] it into his pieces [05409].
5 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall take [03947] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818], and bring [0935] it to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
2 In the place [04725] where they kill [07819] the burnt offering [05930] shall they kill [07819] the trespass offering [0817]: and the blood [01818] thereof shall he sprinkle [02236] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196].
18 He slew [07819] also the bullock [07794] and the ram [0352] for a sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002], which was for the people [05971]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] presented [04672] unto him the blood [01818], which he sprinkled [02236] upon the altar [04196] round about [05439],
13 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of it, and kill [07819] it before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] thereof upon the altar [04196] round about [05439].
8 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of his offering [07133], and kill [07819] it before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] thereof round about [05439] upon the altar [04196].
2 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of his offering [07133], and kill [07819] it at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] the priests [03548] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196] round about [05439].
16 And they stood [05975] in their place [05977] after their manner [04941], according to the law [08451] of Moses [04872] the man [0376] of God [0430]: the priests [03548] sprinkled [02236] the blood [01818], which they received of the hand [03027] of the Levites [03881].
22 So they killed [07819] the bullocks [01241], and the priests [03548] received [06901] the blood [01818], and sprinkled [02236] it on the altar [04196]: likewise, when they had killed [07819] the rams [0352], they sprinkled [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196]: they killed [07819] also the lambs [03532], and they sprinkled [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196].
25 And it came to pass the same night [03915], that the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Take [03947] thy father's [01] young [06499] bullock [07794], even the second [08145] bullock [06499] of seven [07651] years old [08141], and throw down [02040] the altar [04196] of Baal [01168] that thy father [01] hath, and cut down [03772] the grove [0842] that is by it:
2 And he said [0559] unto Aaron [0175], Take [03947] thee a young [01241] [01121] calf [05695] for a sin offering [02403], and a ram [0352] for a burnt offering [05930], without blemish [08549], and offer [07126] them before [06440] the LORD [03068].
14 When the sin [02403], which they have sinned [02398] against it, is known [03045], then the congregation [06951] shall offer [07126] a young [01241] [01121] bullock [06499] for the sin [02403], and bring [0935] him before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
3 If the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] do sin [02398] according to the sin [0819] of the people [05971]; then let him bring [07126] for his sin [02403], which he hath sinned [02398], a young [01241] [01121] bullock [06499] without blemish [08549] unto the LORD [03068] for a sin offering [02403].
11 And he shall kill [07819] it on the side [03409] of the altar [04196] northward [06828] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall sprinkle [02236] his blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196].
34 But the priests [03548] were too few [04592], so that they could [03201] not flay [06584] all the burnt offerings [05930]: wherefore their brethren [0251] the Levites [03881] did help [02388] them, till the work [04399] was ended [03615], and until the other priests [03548] had sanctified [06942] themselves: for the Levites [03881] were more upright [03477] in heart [03824] to sanctify [06942] themselves than the priests [03548].
24 And the priests [03548] killed [07819] them, and they made reconciliation [02398] with their blood [01818] upon the altar [04196], to make an atonement [03722] for all Israel [03478]: for the king [04428] commanded [0559] that the burnt offering [05930] and the sin offering [02403] should be made for all Israel [03478].
6 And he shall flay [06584] the burnt offering [05930], and cut [05408] it into his pieces [05409].
21 And Aaron [0175] shall lay [05564] both [08147] his hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the live [02416] goat [08163], and confess [03034] over him all the iniquities [05771] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and all their transgressions [06588] in all their sins [02403], putting [05414] them upon the head [07218] of the goat [08163], and shall send him away [07971] by the hand [03027] of a fit [06261] man [0376] into the wilderness [04057]:
13 Then thou shalt say [0559] before [06440] the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], I have brought away [01197] the hallowed things [06944] out of mine house [01004], and also have given [05414] them unto the Levite [03881], and unto the stranger [01616], to the fatherless [03490], and to the widow [0490], according to all thy commandments [04687] which thou hast commanded [06680] me: I have not transgressed [05674] thy commandments [04687], neither have I forgotten [07911] them:
30 If there be laid [07896] on him a sum of money [03724], then he shall give [05414] for the ransom [06306] of his life [05315] whatsoever is laid [07896] upon him.
12 When thou takest [05375] the sum [07218] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] after their number [06485], then shall they give [05414] every man [0376] a ransom [03724] for his soul [05315] unto the LORD [03068], when thou numberest [06485] them; that there be no plague [05063] among them, when thou numberest [06485] them.
9 By this [02063] therefore shall the iniquity [05771] of Jacob [03290] be purged [03722]; and this is all the fruit [06529] to take away [05493] his sin [02403]; when he maketh [07760] all the stones [068] of the altar [04196] as chalkstones [01615] that are beaten in sunder [05310], the groves [0842] and images [02553] shall not stand up [06965].
33 So ye shall not pollute [02610] the land [0776] wherein ye are: for blood [01818] it defileth [02610] the land [0776]: and the land [0776] cannot be cleansed [03722] of the blood [01818] that is shed [08210] therein, but by the blood [01818] of him that shed [08210] it.
1 If one be found [04672] slain [02491] in the land [0127] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] giveth [05414] thee to possess [03423] it, lying [05307] in the field [07704], and it be not known [03045] who hath slain [05221] him:
2 Then thy elders [02205] and thy judges [08199] shall come forth [03318], and they shall measure [04058] unto the cities [05892] which are round about [05439] him that is slain [02491]:
3 And it shall be, that the city [05892] which is next [07138] unto the slain man [02491], even the elders [02205] of that city [05892] shall take [03947] an heifer [01241] [05697], which hath not been wrought with [05647], and which hath not drawn [04900] in the yoke [05923];
4 And the elders [02205] of that city [05892] shall bring down [03381] the heifer [05697] unto a rough [0386] valley [05158], which is neither eared [05647] nor sown [02232], and shall strike off [06202] the heifer's [05697] neck [06202] there in the valley [05158]:
5 And the priests [03548] the sons [01121] of Levi [03878] shall come near [05066]; for them the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath chosen [0977] to minister [08334] unto him, and to bless [01288] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068]; and by their word [06310] shall every controversy [07379] and every stroke [05061] be tried:
6 And all the elders [02205] of that city [05892], that are next [07138] unto the slain [02491] man, shall wash [07364] their hands [03027] over the heifer [05697] that is beheaded [06202] in the valley [05158]:
7 And they shall answer [06030] and say [0559], Our hands [03027] have not shed [08210] this blood [01818], neither have our eyes [05869] seen [07200] it.
8 Be merciful [03722], O LORD [03068], unto thy people [05971] Israel [03478], whom thou hast redeemed [06299], and lay [05414] not innocent [05355] blood [01818] unto thy people [05971] of Israel's [03478] charge [07130]. And the blood [01818] shall be forgiven [03722] them.
9 So shalt thou put away [01197] the guilt of innocent [05355] blood [01818] from among [07130] you, when thou shalt do [06213] that which is right [03477] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068].
13 And he shall have it, and his seed [02233] after [0310] him, even the covenant [01285] of an everlasting [05769] priesthood [03550]; because [0834] he was zealous [07065] for his God [0430], and made an atonement [03722] for the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
8 And he went [0935] after [0310] the man [0376] of Israel [03478] into the tent [06898], and thrust [01856] both [08147] of them through, the man [0376] of Israel [03478], and the woman [0802] through [0413] her belly [06897]. So the plague [04046] was stayed [06113] from the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
11 And Moses [04872] did [06213] so: as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] him, so did [06213] he.
30 And it came to pass on the morrow [04283], that Moses [04872] said [0559] unto the people [05971], Ye have sinned [02398] a great [01419] sin [02401]: and now I will go up [05927] unto the LORD [03068]; peradventure [0194] I shall make an atonement [03722] for [01157] your sin [02403].
17 Wherefore have ye not eaten [0398] the sin offering [02403] in the holy [06944] place [04725], seeing it is most [06944] holy [06944], and God hath given [05414] it you to bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the congregation [05712], to make atonement [03722] for them before [06440] the LORD [03068]?
11 For the life [05315] of the flesh [01320] is in the blood [01818]: and I have given [05414] it to you upon the altar [04196] to make an atonement [03722] for your souls [05315]: for it is the blood [01818] that maketh an atonement [03722] for the soul [05315].
13 This they shall give [05414], every one that passeth [05674] among [05921] them that are numbered [06485], half [04276] a shekel [08255] after the shekel [08255] of the sanctuary [06944]: (a shekel [08255] is twenty [06242] gerahs [01626]:) an half [04276] shekel [08255] shall be the offering [08641] of the LORD [03068].
14 Every one that passeth [05674] among them that are numbered [06485], from twenty [06242] years [08141] old [01121] and above [04605], shall give [05414] an offering [08641] unto the LORD [03068].
15 The rich [06223] shall not give more [07235], and the poor [01800] shall not give less [04591] than half [04276] a shekel [08255], when they give [05414] an offering [08641] unto the LORD [03068], to make an atonement [03722] for your souls [05315].
16 And thou shalt take [03947] the atonement [03725] money [03701] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and shalt appoint [05414] it for the service [05656] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]; that it may be a memorial [02146] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478] before [06440] the LORD [03068], to make an atonement [03722] for your souls [05315].
22 And Aaron [0175] said [0559], Let not the anger [0639] of my lord [0113] wax hot [02734]: thou knowest [03045] the people [05971], that they are set on mischief [07451].
10 Now therefore let me alone [03240], that my wrath [0639] may wax hot [02734] against them, and that I may consume [03615] them: and I will make [06213] of thee a great [01419] nation [01471].
14 And it was revealed [01540] in mine ears [0241] by the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], Surely this iniquity [05771] shall not be purged [03722] from you till ye die [04191], saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] of hosts [06635].
7 And he laid [05060] it upon my mouth [06310], and said [0559], Lo, this hath touched [05060] thy lips [08193]; and thine iniquity [05771] is taken away [05493], and thy sin [02403] purged [03722].
18 And your covenant [01285] with death [04194] shall be disannulled [03722], and your agreement [02380] with hell [07585] shall not stand [06965]; when the overflowing [07857] scourge [07752] shall pass through [05674], then ye shall be trodden down [04823] by it.
11 Therefore shall evil [07451] come [0935] upon thee; thou shalt not know [03045] from whence it riseth [07837]: and mischief [01943] shall fall [05307] upon thee; thou shalt not be able [03201] to put it off [03722]: and desolation [07722] shall come [0935] upon thee suddenly [06597], which thou shalt not know [03045].
14 The wrath [02534] of a king [04428] is as messengers [04397] of death [04194]: but a wise [02450] man [0376] will pacify [03722] it.
21 So went [05674] the present [04503] over [05674] before him [06440]: and himself lodged [03885] that night [03915] in the company [04264].
23 But they obeyed [08085] not, neither inclined [05186] their ear [0241], but made their neck [06203] stiff [07185], that they might not hear [08085], nor receive [03947] instruction [04148].
38 But he, being full of compassion [07349], forgave [03722] their iniquity [05771], and destroyed [07843] them not: yea, many a time [07235] turned [07725] he his anger [0639] away [07725], and did not stir up [05782] all his wrath [02534].
4 Blessed [0835] is the man whom thou choosest [0977], and causest to approach [07126] unto thee, that he may dwell [07931] in thy courts [02691]: we shall be satisfied [07646] with the goodness [02898] of thy house [01004], even of thy holy [06918] temple [01964].
33 And he shall make an atonement [03722] for the holy [06944] sanctuary [04720], and he shall make an atonement [03722] for the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], and for the altar [04196], and he shall make an atonement [03722] for the priests [03548], and for all the people [05971] of the congregation [06951].
63 That thou mayest remember [02142], and be confounded [0954], and never open [06610] thy mouth [06310] any more because [06440] of thy shame [03639], when I am pacified [03722] toward thee for all that thou hast done [06213], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
18 For a multitude [04768] of the people [05971], even many [07227] of Ephraim [0669], and Manasseh [04519], Issachar [03485], and Zebulun [02074], had not [03808] cleansed [02891] themselves, yet did they eat [0398] the passover [06453] otherwise than it was written [03789]. But Hezekiah [03169] prayed [06419] for them, saying [0559], The good [02896] LORD [03068] pardon [03722] every one
24 And he shall wash [07364] his flesh [01320] with water [04325] in the holy [06918] place [04725], and put on [03847] his garments [0899], and come forth [03318], and offer [06213] his burnt offering [05930], and the burnt offering [05930] of the people [05971], and make an atonement [03722] for himself, and for the people [05971].
6 And Aaron [0175] shall offer [07126] his bullock [06499] of the sin offering [02403], which is for himself [01157], and make an atonement [03722] for himself, and for his house [01004].
6 And he shall bring [0935] his trespass offering [0817] unto the LORD [03068] for his sin [02403] which he hath sinned [02398], a female [05347] from the flock [06629], a lamb [03776] or a kid [08166] of the goats [05795], for a sin offering [02403]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him concerning his sin [02403].
26 And he shall burn [06999] all his fat [02459] upon the altar [04196], as the fat [02459] of the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him as concerning his sin [02403], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
18 And he shall bring [0935] a ram [0352] without blemish [08549] out of the flock [06629], with thy estimation [06187], for a trespass offering [0817], unto the priest [03548]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him concerning his ignorance [07684] wherein he erred [07683] and wist [03045] it not, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
13 And the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him as touching his sin [02403] that he hath sinned [02398] in one [0259] of these, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him: and the remnant shall be the priest's [03548], as a meat offering [04503].
35 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] of the lamb [03775] is taken away [05493] from the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196], according to the offerings made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for his sin [02403] that he hath committed [02398], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
12 And the Levites [03881] shall lay [05564] their hands [03027] upon the heads [07218] of the bullocks [06499]: and thou shalt offer [06213] the one [0259] for a sin offering [02403], and the other [0259] for a burnt offering [05930], unto the LORD [03068], to make an atonement [03722] for the Levites [03881].
15 The rich [06223] shall not give more [07235], and the poor [01800] shall not give less [04591] than half [04276] a shekel [08255], when they give [05414] an offering [08641] unto the LORD [03068], to make an atonement [03722] for your souls [05315].
11 For the life [05315] of the flesh [01320] is in the blood [01818]: and I have given [05414] it to you upon the altar [04196] to make an atonement [03722] for your souls [05315]: for it is the blood [01818] that maketh an atonement [03722] for the soul [05315].
7 Who shall offer [07126] it before [06440] the LORD [03068], and make an atonement [03722] for her; and she shall be cleansed [02891] from the issue [04726] of her blood [01818]. This is the law [08451] for her that hath born [03205] a male [02145] or a female [05347].
20 And he shall do [06213] with the bullock [06499] as he did [06213] with the bullock [06499] for a sin offering [02403], so shall he do [06213] with this: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for them, and it shall be forgiven [05545] them.
29 And the rest [03498] of the oil [08081] that is in the priest's [03548] hand [03709] he shall put [05414] upon the head [07218] of him that is to be cleansed [02891], to make an atonement [03722] for him before [06440] the LORD [03068].
20 And the priest [03548] shall offer [05927] the burnt offering [05930] and the meat offering [04503] upon the altar [04196]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him, and he shall be clean [02891].
10 And he shall offer [06213] the second [08145] for a burnt offering [05930], according to the manner [04941]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him for his sin [02403] which he hath sinned [02398], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
14 Make [06213] thee an ark [08392] of gopher [01613] wood [06086]; rooms [07064] shalt thou make [06213] in [0854] the ark [08392], and shalt pitch [03722] it within [01004] and without [02351] with pitch [03724].
2 In the place [04725] where they kill [07819] the burnt offering [05930] shall they kill [07819] the trespass offering [0817]: and the blood [01818] thereof shall he sprinkle [02236] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196].
15 If a soul [05315] commit [04603] a trespass [04604], and sin [02398] through ignorance [07684], in the holy things [06944] of the LORD [03068]; then he shall bring [0935] for his trespass [0817] unto the LORD [03068] a ram [0352] without blemish [08549] out of the flocks [06629], with thy estimation [06187] by shekels [08255] of silver [03701], after the shekel [08255] of the sanctuary [06944], for a trespass offering [0817]:
6 And he shall bring [0935] his trespass offering [0817] unto the LORD [03068] for his sin [02403] which he hath sinned [02398], a female [05347] from the flock [06629], a lamb [03776] or a kid [08166] of the goats [05795], for a sin offering [02403]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him concerning his sin [02403].
33 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the sin offering [02403], and slay [07819] it for a sin offering [02403] in the place [04725] where they kill [07819] the burnt offering [05930].
29 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the sin offering [02403], and slay [07819] the sin offering [02403] in the place [04725] of the burnt offering [05930].
24 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the goat [08163], and kill [07819] it in the place [04725] where they kill [07819] the burnt offering [05930] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: it is a sin offering [02403].
15 And the elders [02205] of the congregation [05712] shall lay [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the bullock [06499] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the bullock [06499] shall be killed [07819] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
4 And he shall bring [0935] the bullock [06499] unto the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the bullock's [06499] head [07218], and kill [07819] the bullock [06499] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
7 If he offer [07126] a lamb [03775] for his offering [07133], then shall he offer [07126] it before [06440] the LORD [03068].
4 And he shall put [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the burnt offering [05930]; and it shall be accepted [07521] for him to make atonement [03722] for him.
38 And it shall be upon Aaron's [0175] forehead [04696], that Aaron [0175] may bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the holy things [06944], which the children [01121] of Israel [03478] shall hallow [06942] in all their holy [06944] gifts [04979]; and it shall be always [08548] upon his forehead [04696], that they may be accepted [07522] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
8 And thou shalt say [0559] unto them, Whatsoever man [0376] there be of the house [01004] of Israel [03478], or of the strangers [01616] which sojourn [01481] among [08432] you, that offereth [05927] a burnt offering [05930] or sacrifice [02077],
9 And bringeth [0935] it not unto the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], to offer [06213] it unto the LORD [03068]; even that man [0376] shall be cut off [03772] from among his people [05971].
6 And thou shalt set [05414] the altar [04196] of the burnt offering [05930] before [06440] the door [06607] of the tabernacle [04908] of the tent [0168] of the congregation [04150].
19 Ye shall offer at your own will [07522] a male [02145] without blemish [08549], of the beeves [01241], of the sheep [03775], or of the goats [05795].
20 But whatsoever hath a blemish [03971], that shall ye not offer [07126]: for it shall not be acceptable [07522] for you.
21 And whosoever [0376] offereth [07126] a sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002] unto the LORD [03068] to accomplish [06381] his vow [05088], or a freewill offering [05071] in beeves [01241] or sheep [06629], it shall be perfect [08549] to be accepted [07522]; there shall be no blemish [03971] therein.
22 Blind [05788], or broken [07665], or maimed [02782], or having a wen [02990], or scurvy [01618], or scabbed [03217], ye shall not offer [07126] these unto the LORD [03068], nor make [05414] an offering by fire [0801] of them upon the altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068].
23 Either a bullock [07794] or a lamb [07716] that hath any thing superfluous [08311] or lacking in his parts [07038], that mayest thou offer [06213] for a freewill offering [05071]; but for a vow [05088] it shall not be accepted [07521].
24 Ye shall not offer [07126] unto the LORD [03068] that which is bruised [04600], or crushed [03807], or broken [05423], or cut [03772]; neither shall ye make [06213] any offering thereof in your land [0776].
25 Neither from a stranger's [05236] hand [03027] [01121] shall ye offer [07126] the bread [03899] of your God [0430] of any of these; because their corruption [04893] is in them, and blemishes [03971] be in them: they shall not be accepted [07521] for you.
20 And Noah [05146] builded [01129] an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068]; and took [03947] of every clean [02889] beast [0929], and of every clean [02889] fowl [05775], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] on the altar [04196].
9 I [1473] am [1510] the door [2374]: by [1223] me [1700] if [1437] any man [5100] enter in [1525], he shall be saved [4982], and [2532] shall go in [1525] and [2532] out [1831], and [2532] find [2147] pasture [3542].
7 Then [3767] said [2036] Jesus [2424] unto them [846] again [3825], Verily [281], verily [281], I say [3004] unto you [5213], [3754] I [1473] am [1510] the door [2374] of the sheep [4263].
27 That [2443] he might present [3936] it [846] to himself [1438] a glorious [1741] church [1577], not [3361] having [2192] spot [4696], or [2228] wrinkle [4512], or [2228] any [5100] such thing [5108]; but [235] that [2443] it should be [5600] holy [40] and [2532] without blemish [299].
14 But cursed [0779] be the deceiver [05230], which [03426] hath in his flock [05739] a male [02145], and voweth [05087], and sacrificeth [02076] unto the Lord [0136] a corrupt thing [07843]: for I am a great [01419] King [04428], saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], and my name [08034] is dreadful [03372] among the heathen [01471].
