fell upon . . . face, and worshipped Daniel--worshipping God in the person of Daniel. Symbolical of the future prostration of the world power before Messiah and His kingdom (Phi 2:10). As other servants of God refused such honors (Act 10:25-26; Act 14:13-15; Rev 22:8-9) would not taste defiled food, nor give up prayer to God at the cost of his life (Dan 6:7, Dan 6:10), it seems likely that Daniel rejected the proffered divine honors. The word "answered" (Dan 2:47) implies that Daniel had objected to these honors; and in compliance with his objection, "the king answered, Of a truth, your God is a God of gods." Daniel had disclaimed all personal merit in Dan 2:30, giving God all the glory (compare Dan 2:45).
commanded . . . sweet odours--divine honors (Ezr 6:10). It is not said his command was executed. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face - This was the common method of signifying profound respect among the Orientals. Compare Gen 17:3; Gen 50:18; Lev 9:24; Num 14:5; Jos 5:14; Jdg 13:20; Rev 11:16.
And worshipped Daniel - The word rendered "worshipped" here (סגד segid), in the Chaldee portions of the Bible is uniformly rendered "worship," Dan 2:26; Dan 3:5-7, Dan 3:10-12, Dan 3:14-15, Dan 3:18, Dan 3:28. It occurs nowhere else, and in every instance, except in the one before us, is employed with reference to the homage paid to an idol, all the other cases occurring in the third chapter respecting the image that was set up by Nebuchadnezzar. The corresponding Hebrew word (סגד sâgad) occurs only in Isa 44:15, Isa 44:17, Isa 44:19; Isa 46:6; and is, in every instance, rendered "fall down," also with reference to idols. The proper idea, therefore, of the word here is, that the monarch meant to render "religious" homage to Daniel, or such adoration as was usually paid to idols. This is confirmed by witat is immediately added, that he commanded that an oblation should be made to him. It is not, however, necessary to suppose that Daniel "received" or "approved" this religious homage of the king, or that he left the impression on his mind that he was "willing" to be honored as a god. The prostration of the king before him, of course, he could not prevent. The views and feelings which the monarch had in doing it he could not prevent. The command to present an "oblation and sweet odors to him" he could not prevent. But it is not a fair inference that Daniel approved this, or that he did anything to countenance it, or even that he did not, in a proper manner, rebuke it: for
(1) We are not to suppose that all that was said was recorded, and no one can prove that Daniel did not express his disapprobation of this religious honor shown to him.
(2) Daniel had in fact, expressed his views, in the clearest manner, on this very point before the monarch. He had, again and again, disclaimed all power to be able to reveal such secrets. He had directed his mind to the true God, as he who alone could disclose coming events, Dan 2:28, Dan 2:30, Dan 2:45. He had taken all possible precaution to prevent any such result, by declaring, in the most emphatic terms Dan 2:30, that this secret was not revealed to him "on account of any wisdom which he had more than any living." If now, after all this precaution, and these disclaimers, the king should prostrate himself before him, and, for the moment, feel that he was in the presence of a God, Daniel was not responsible for it, and it should not be inferred that he encouraged or approved it.
(3) It would seem, from the narrative itself, more than probable that Daniel did refuse the homage, and direct the thoughts of the monarch to the true God. In the very next verse it is said, "The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets." "Answered" what? Perhaps something that was said by Daniel. At all events, it is clear from this that whatever were the momentary expressions of wonder, gratitude, and adoration, on the part of the king, his thoughts soon passed to the proper object of worship - the true God. "And commanded, etc." The fact that this was "commanded" does not prove that it was done. The command was probably given under the excitement of his admiration and wonder. But it does not follow that Daniel received it, or that the command was not recalled on reflection, or that the oblation and odors may not have been presented to the true God.
That they should offer an oblation - That is, his attendants, or perhaps the priests to whom pertained the duty of making offerings to the gods. The word rendered "oblation" (מנחה minchāh) does not refer to a, "bloody" sacrifice, but means a gift or present of any kind. It is applied in the Scriptures to denote
(1) "a gift," or "present," Gen 32:13, Gen 32:18, Gen 32:20 (Gen 32:14, Gen 32:19, Gen 32:21); Gen 43:11, Gen 43:15, Gen 43:25-26;
(2) "a tribute," such as was exacted from a subject nation, under the notion of a present, Sa2 8:2, Sa2 8:6; Kg1 4:21 Kg1 5:1,
(3) "an offering" or sacrifice to God, especially a bloodless offering, in opposition to (זבח zebach) - a bloody sacrifice, Lev 2:1, Lev 2:4-6; Lev 6:14 (7); Lev 7:9; Psa 40:6 (7); Jer 17:26.
See the word fully explained in the notes at Isa 1:13. There can be no doubt that Nebuchadnezzar meant that such an offering should be presented as was usually made in idol worship.
And sweet odors - incense was commonly used in worship (see the notes at Isa 1:13), and it is not improbable that in the worship of the gods it was accompanied with other fragrant odors. Sweet odors, or "savors," expressed by the same word which is used here, were a part of the prescribed worship in the Hebrew ritual, Lev 1:9, Lev 1:13, Lev 1:17; Lev 2:2, Lev 2:9; Lev 3:5; Lev 6:21 (14); Num 15:7. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The impression which this interpretation of the dream made upon Nebuchadnezzar, and the consequences which thence arose for Daniel.
The announcement and the interpretation of the remarkable dream made so powerful an impression on Nebuchadnezzar, that he fell down in supplication before Daniel and ordered sacrifice to be offered to him. Falling prostrate to the earth is found as a mark of honour to men, it is true (Sa1 20:41; Sa1 25:28; Sa2 14:4), but סגד is used only of divine homage (Isa 44:15, Isa 44:17, Isa 44:19; Isa 46:6, and Dan 3:5.). To the Chaldean king, Daniel appeared as a man in whom the gods manifested themselves; therefore he shows to him divine honour, such as was shown by Cornelius to the Apostle Peter, and at Lystra was shown to Paul and Barnabas, Act 10:25; Act 14:13. מנחה, an unbloody sacrifice, and ניחחין, are not burnt sacrifices or offerings of pieces of fat (Hitz.), but incensings, the offering of incense; cf. Exo 30:9, where the קטרת is particularly mentioned along with the עלה and the מנחה. נסּך is, with Hitz., to be taken after the Arabic in the general signification sacrificare, but is transferred zeugmatically from the pouring out of a drink-offering to the offering of a sacrifice. Dan 2:47, where Nebuchadnezzar praises the God of the Jews as the God of gods, does not stand in contradiction to the rendering of divine honour to Daniel in such a way that, with Hitz., in the conduct of the king we miss consistency and propriety, and find it improbable. For Nebuchadnezzar did not pray to the man Daniel, but in the person of Daniel to his God, i.e., to the God of the Jews; and he did this because this God had manifested Himself to him through Daniel as the supreme God, who rules over kings, and reveals hidden things which the gods of the Chaldean wise men were not able to reveal. Moreover, in this, Nebuchadnezzar did not abandon his heathen standpoint. He did not recognise the God of the Jews as the only, or the alone true God, but only as God of gods, as the highest or the most exalted of the gods, who excelled the other gods in might and in wisdom, and was a Lord of kings, and as such must be honoured along with the gods of his own country. מן־קשׁט דּי, of truth (it is) that, stands adverbially for truly. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
That they should offer - This was strange, that so great a monarch should thus worship his vassal, which he did in consternation and admiration. But doubtless Daniel put a stop to it: though he could not hinder the king in his prostration, and in his word of command. And the king being instructed of Daniel, gives God all the glory in the next words. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The king - fell upon his face - Prostrated himself: this was the fullest act of adoration among the ancients.
Worshipped Daniel - Supposing him to be a god, or Divine being. No doubt Daniel forbade him; for to receive this would have been gross idolatry. |
10 That they may offer [01934] [07127] sacrifices of sweet savours [05208] unto the God [0426] of heaven [08065], and pray [06739] for the life [02417] of the king [04430], and of his sons [01123].
45 Forasmuch as [03606] [06903] thou sawest [02370] that the stone [069] was cut out [01505] of the mountain [02906] without [03809] hands [03028], and that it brake in pieces [01855] the iron [06523], the brass [05174], the clay [02635], the silver [03702], and the gold [01722]; the great [07229] God [0426] hath made known [03046] to the king [04430] what [04101] shall come to pass [01934] hereafter [0311] [01836]: and the dream [02493] is certain [03330], and the interpretation [06591] thereof sure [0540].
30 But as for me [0576], this [01836] secret [07328] is not [03809] revealed [01541] to me for any wisdom [02452] that I have [0383] more than [04481] any [03606] living [02417], but [03861] for their sakes [01701] that [05922] shall make known [03046] the interpretation [06591] to the king [04430], and that thou mightest know [03046] the thoughts [07476] of thy heart [03825].
47 The king [04430] answered [06032] unto Daniel [01841], and said [0560], Of [04481] a truth [07187] it is, that [01768] your God [0426] is a God [0426] of gods [0426], and a Lord [04756] of kings [04430], and a revealer [01541] of secrets [07328], seeing thou couldest [03202] reveal [01541] this [01836] secret [07328].
10 Now when Daniel [01841] knew [03046] that the writing [03792] was signed [07560], he went [05954] into his house [01005]; and his windows [03551] being open [06606] in his chamber [05952] toward [05049] Jerusalem [03390], he kneeled [01289] upon [05922] his knees [01291] three [08532] times [02166] a day [03118], and prayed [06739], and gave thanks [03029] before [06925] his God [0426], as [06903] [03606] he did [01934] [05648] aforetime [04481] [01836] [06928].
7 All [03606] the presidents [05632] of the kingdom [04437], the governors [05460], and the princes [0324], the counsellors [01907], and the captains [06347], have consulted together [03272] to establish [06966] a royal [04430] statute [07010], and to make a firm [08631] decree [0633], that whosoever shall ask [01156] a petition [01159] of [04481] any [03606] God [0426] or man [0606] for [05705] thirty [08533] days [03118], save [03861] of thee [04481], O king [04430], he shall be cast [07412] into the den [01358] of lions [0744].
8 And [2532] I [1473] John [2491] saw [991] these things [5023], and [2532] heard [191] them. And [2532] when [3753] I had heard [191] and [2532] seen [991], I fell down [4098] to worship [4352] before [1715] the feet [4228] of the angel [32] which [3588] shewed [1166] me [3427] these things [5023].
9 Then [2532] saith he [3004] unto me [3427], See [3708] thou do it not [3361]: for [1063] I am [1510] thy [4675] fellowservant [4889], and [2532] of thy [4675] brethren [80] the prophets [4396], and [2532] of them which keep [5083] the sayings [3056] of this [5127] book [975]: worship [4352] God [2316].
13 Then [1161] the priest [2409] of Jupiter [2203], which [3588] was [5607] before [4253] their [846] city [4172], brought [5342] oxen [5022] and [2532] garlands [4725] unto [1909] the gates [4440], and would [2309] have done sacrifice [2380] with [4862] the people [3793].
14 Which when [1161] the apostles [652], Barnabas [921] and [2532] Paul [3972], heard [191] of, they rent [1284] their [846] clothes [2440], and ran [1530] in among [1519] the people [3793], crying out [2896],
15 And [2532] saying [3004], Sirs [435], why [5101] do ye [4160] these things [5130]? We [2249] also [2532] are [2070] men [444] of like passions [3663] with you [5213], and preach [2097] unto you [5209] that ye should turn [1994] from [575] these [5023] vanities [3152] unto [1909] the living [2198] God [2316], which [3739] made [4160] heaven [3772], and [2532] earth [1093], and [2532] the sea [2281], and [2532] all things [3956] that are therein [1722] [846]:
25 And [1161] as [5613] Peter [4074] was [1096] coming in [1525], Cornelius [2883] met [4876] him [846], and fell down [4098] at [1909] his feet [4228], and worshipped [4352] him.
26 But [1161] Peter [4074] took [1453] him [846] up [1453], saying [3004], Stand up [450]; I [2504] myself [846] also [2504] am [1510] a man [444].
10 That [2443] at [1722] the name [3686] of Jesus [2424] every [3956] knee [1119] should bow [2578], of things in heaven [2032], and [2532] things in earth [1919], and [2532] things under the earth [2709];
7 And for a drink offering [05262] thou shalt offer [07126] the third [07992] part of an hin [01969] of wine [03196], for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
21 In a pan [04227] it shall be made [06213] with oil [08081]; and when it is baken [07246], thou shalt bring [0935] it in: and the baken [08601] pieces [06595] of the meat offering [04503] shalt thou offer [07126] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
5 And Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] shall burn [06999] it on the altar [04196] upon the burnt sacrifice [05930], which is upon the wood [06086] that is on the fire [0784]: it is an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
9 And the priest [03548] shall take [07311] from the meat offering [04503] a memorial [0234] thereof, and shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196]: it is an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
2 And he shall bring [0935] it to Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] the priests [03548]: and he shall take [07061] thereout [08033] his handful [07062] [04393] of the flour [05560] thereof, and of the oil [08081] thereof, with all the frankincense [03828] thereof; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] the memorial [0234] of it upon the altar [04196], to be an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]:
17 And he shall cleave [08156] it with the wings [03671] thereof, but shall not divide it asunder [0914]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196], upon the wood [06086] that is upon the fire [0784]: it is a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
13 But he shall wash [07364] the inwards [07130] and the legs [03767] with water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall bring [07126] it all, and burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196]: it is a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
13 Bring [0935] no more [03254] vain [07723] oblations [04503]; incense [07004] is an abomination [08441] unto me; the new moons [02320] and sabbaths [07676], the calling [07121] of assemblies [04744], I cannot away with [03201]; it is iniquity [0205], even the solemn meeting [06116].
26 And they shall come [0935] from the cities [05892] of Judah [03063], and from the places about [05439] Jerusalem [03389], and from the land [0776] of Benjamin [01144], and from the plain [08219], and from the mountains [02022], and from the south [05045], bringing [0935] burnt offerings [05930], and sacrifices [02077], and meat offerings [04503], and incense [03828], and bringing [0935] sacrifices of praise [08426], unto the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
6 Sacrifice [02077] and offering [04503] thou didst not desire [02654]; mine ears [0241] hast thou opened [03738]: burnt offering [05930] and sin offering [02401] hast thou not required [07592].
9 And all the meat offering [04503] that is baken [0644] in the oven [08574], and all that is dressed [06213] in the fryingpan [04802], and in the pan [04227], shall be the priest's [03548] that offereth [07126] it.
14 And this is the law [08451] of the meat offering [04503]: the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175] shall offer [07126] it before [06440] the LORD [03068], before [06440] the altar [04196].
4 And if thou bring [07126] an oblation [07133] of a meat offering [04503] baken [03989] in the oven [08574], it shall be unleavened [04682] cakes [02471] of fine flour [05560] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], or unleavened [04682] wafers [07550] anointed [04886] with oil [08081].
5 And if thy oblation [07133] be a meat offering [04503] baken in a pan [04227], it shall be of fine flour [05560] unleavened [04682], mingled [01101] with oil [08081].
6 Thou shalt part [06626] it in pieces [06595], and pour [03332] oil [08081] thereon: it is a meat offering [04503].
1 And when any [05315] will offer [07126] a meat [04503] offering [07133] unto the LORD [03068], his offering [07133] shall be of fine flour [05560]; and he shall pour [03332] oil [08081] upon it, and put [05414] frankincense [03828] thereon:
1 And Hiram [02438] king [04428] of Tyre [06865] sent [07971] his servants [05650] unto Solomon [08010]; for he had heard [08085] that they had anointed [04886] him king [04428] in the room of his father [01]: for Hiram [02438] was ever [03117] a lover [0157] of David [01732].
21 And Solomon [08010] reigned [04910] over all kingdoms [04467] from the river [05104] unto the land [0776] of the Philistines [06430], and unto the border [01366] of Egypt [04714]: they brought [05066] presents [04503], and served [05647] Solomon [08010] all the days [03117] of his life [02416].
6 Then David [01732] put [07760] garrisons [05333] in Syria [0758] of Damascus [01834]: and the Syrians [0758] became servants [05650] to David [01732], and brought [05375] gifts [04503]. And the LORD [03068] preserved [03467] David [01732] whithersoever he went [01980].
2 And he smote [05221] Moab [04124], and measured [04058] them with a line [02256], casting them down [07901] to the ground [0776]; even with two [08147] lines [02256] measured [04058] he to put to death [04191], and with one full [04393] line [02256] to keep alive [02421]. And so the Moabites [04124] became David's [01732] servants [05650], and brought [05375] gifts [04503].
25 And they made ready [03559] the present [04503] against [05704] Joseph [03130] came [0935] at noon [06672]: for they heard [08085] that they should eat [0398] bread [03899] there.
26 And when Joseph [03130] came [0935] home [01004], they brought [0935] him the present [04503] which was in their hand [03027] into the house [01004], and bowed [07812] themselves to him to the earth [0776].
15 And the men [0582] took [03947] that [02063] present [04503], and they took [03947] double [04932] money [03701] in their hand [03027], and Benjamin [01144]; and rose up [06965], and went down [03381] to Egypt [04714], and stood [05975] before [06440] Joseph [03130].
11 And their father [01] Israel [03478] said [0559] unto them, If it must be so now [0645], do [06213] this; take [03947] of the best fruits [02173] in the land [0776] in your vessels [03627], and carry down [03381] the man [0376] a present [04503], a little [04592] balm [06875], and a little [04592] honey [01706], spices [05219], and myrrh [03910], nuts [0992], and almonds [08247]:
21 So went [05674] the present [04503] over [05674] before him [06440]: and himself lodged [03885] that night [03915] in the company [04264].
19 And so [01571] commanded he [06680] the second [08145], and the third [07992], and all that followed [01980] [0310] the droves [05739], saying [0559], On this manner [01697] shall ye speak [01696] unto Esau [06215], when ye find [04672] him.
14 Two hundred [03967] she goats [05795], and twenty [06242] he goats [08495], two hundred [03967] ewes [07353], and twenty [06242] rams [0352],
20 And say ye [0559] moreover [01571], Behold, thy servant [05650] Jacob [03290] is behind us [0310]. For he said [0559], I will appease [03722] him [06440] with the present [04503] that goeth [01980] before me [06440], and afterward [0310] I will see [07200] his face [06440]; peradventure he will accept [05375] of me [06440].
18 Then thou shalt say [0559], They be thy servant [05650] Jacob's [03290]; it is a present [04503] sent [07971] unto my lord [0113] Esau [06215]: and, behold, also he is behind us [0310].
13 And he lodged [03885] there that same night [03915]; and took [03947] of that which came [0935] to his hand [03027] a present [04503] for Esau [06215] his brother [0251];
28 But [01297] there is [0383] a God [0426] in heaven [08065] that revealeth [01541] secrets [07328], and maketh known [03046] to the king [04430] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] what [04101] shall be [01934] in the latter [0320] days [03118]. Thy dream [02493], and the visions [02376] of thy head [07217] upon [05922] thy bed [04903], are these [01836];
6 They lavish [02107] gold [02091] out of the bag [03599], and weigh [08254] silver [03701] in the balance [07070], and hire [07936] a goldsmith [06884]; and he maketh [06213] it a god [0410]: they fall down [05456], yea, they worship [07812].
19 And none considereth [07725] in his heart [03820], neither is there knowledge [01847] nor understanding [08394] to say [0559], I have burned [08313] part [02677] of it in [01119] the fire [0784]; yea, also I have baked [0644] bread [03899] upon the coals [01513] thereof; I have roasted [06740] flesh [01320], and eaten [0398] it: and shall I make [06213] the residue [03499] thereof an abomination [08441]? shall I fall down [05456] to the stock [0944] of a tree [06086]?
17 And the residue [07611] thereof he maketh [06213] a god [0410], even his graven image [06459]: he falleth down [05456] unto it, and worshippeth [07812] it, and prayeth [06419] unto it, and saith [0559], Deliver [05337] me; for thou art my god [0410].
15 Then shall it be for a man [0120] to burn [01197]: for he will take [03947] thereof, and warm [02552] himself; yea, he kindleth [05400] it, and baketh [0644] bread [03899]; yea, he maketh [06466] a god [0410], and worshippeth [07812] it; he maketh [06213] it a graven image [06459], and falleth down [05456] thereto.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar [05020] spake [06032], and said [0560], Blessed [01289] be the God [0426] of Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], who hath sent [07972] his angel [04398], and delivered [07804] his servants [05649] that trusted [07365] in him [05922], and have changed [08133] the king's [04430] word [04406], and yielded [03052] their bodies [01655], that they might not [03809] serve [06399] nor [03809] worship [05457] any [03606] god [0426], except [03861] their own God [0426].
18 But if [02006] not [03809], be it [01934] known [03046] unto thee, O king [04430], that we will [0383] not [03809] serve [06399] thy gods [0426], nor [03809] worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] which thou hast set up [06966].
14 Nebuchadnezzar [05020] spake [06032] and said [0560] unto them, Is it true [06656], O Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], do not [03809] ye [0383] serve [06399] my gods [0426], nor [03809] worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] which I have set [06966] up?
15 Now [03705] if [02006] ye be [0383] ready [06263] that at what time [05732] ye hear [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], and dulcimer [05481], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], ye fall down [05308] and worship [05457] the image [06755] which I have made [05648]; well: but if [02006] ye worship [05457] not [03809], ye shall be cast [07412] the same hour [08160] into the midst [01459] of a burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861]; and who [04479] is that God [0426] that shall deliver [07804] you out of [04481] my hands [03028]?
10 Thou [0607], O king [04430], hast made [07761] a decree [02942], that every [03606] man [0606] that shall hear [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], and dulcimer [05481] [05481], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], shall fall down [05308] and worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755]:
11 And whoso [04479] falleth [05308] not [03809] down [05308] and worshippeth [05457], that he should be cast [07412] into the midst [01459] of a burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861].
12 There are [0383] certain [01400] Jews [03062] whom [03487] thou hast set [04483] over [05922] the affairs [05673] of the province [04083] of Babylon [0895], Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665]; these [0479] men [01400], O king [04430], have [07761] not [03809] regarded [02942] thee [05922]: they serve [06399] not [03809] thy gods [0426], nor [03809] worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] which thou hast set up [06966].
5 That at what time [05732] ye hear [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], dulcimer [05481], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], ye fall down [05308] and worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] that Nebuchadnezzar [05020] the king [04430] hath set up [06966]:
6 And whoso [04479] falleth [05308] not [03809] down [05308] and worshippeth [05457] shall the same hour [08160] be cast [07412] into the midst [01459] of a burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861].
7 Therefore [06903] [01836] at that time [02166], when [01768] all [03606] the people [05972] heard [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], all [03606] the people [05972], the nations [0524], and the languages [03961], fell down [05308] and worshipped [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] that Nebuchadnezzar [05020] the king [04430] had set up [06966].
26 The king [04430] answered [06032] and said [0560] to Daniel [01841], whose name [08036] was Belteshazzar [01096], Art [0383] thou able [03546] to make known [03046] unto me the dream [02493] which I have seen [02370], and the interpretation [06591] thereof?
16 And [2532] the four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] elders [4245], which [3588] sat [2521] before [1799] God [2316] on [1909] their [846] seats [2362], fell [4098] upon [1909] their [846] faces [4383], and [2532] worshipped [4352] God [2316],
20 For it came to pass, when the flame [03851] went up [05927] toward heaven [08064] from off the altar [04196], that the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] ascended [05927] in the flame [03851] of the altar [04196]. And Manoah [04495] and his wife [0802] looked on [07200] it, and fell on [05307] their faces [06440] to the ground [0776].
14 And he said [0559], Nay; but as captain [08269] of the host [06635] of the LORD [03068] am I now come [0935]. And Joshua [03091] fell [05307] on his face [06440] to the earth [0776], and did worship [07812], and said [0559] unto him, What saith [01696] my lord [0113] unto his servant [05650]?
5 Then Moses [04872] and Aaron [0175] fell [05307] on their faces [06440] before [06440] all the assembly [06951] of the congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
24 And there came [03318] a fire [0784] out from before [06440] the LORD [03068], and consumed [0398] upon the altar [04196] the burnt offering [05930] and the fat [02459]: which when all the people [05971] saw [07200], they shouted [07442], and fell [05307] on their faces [06440].
18 And his brethren [0251] also went [03212] and fell down [05307] before his face [06440]; and they said [0559], Behold, we be thy servants [05650].
3 And Abram [087] fell [05307] on his face [06440]: and God [0430] talked [01696] with him, saying [0559],
47 The king [04430] answered [06032] unto Daniel [01841], and said [0560], Of [04481] a truth [07187] it is, that [01768] your God [0426] is a God [0426] of gods [0426], and a Lord [04756] of kings [04430], and a revealer [01541] of secrets [07328], seeing thou couldest [03202] reveal [01541] this [01836] secret [07328].
9 Ye shall offer [05927] no strange [02114] incense [07004] thereon, nor burnt sacrifice [05930], nor meat offering [04503]; neither shall ye pour [05258] drink offering [05262] thereon.
25 And [1161] as [5613] Peter [4074] was [1096] coming in [1525], Cornelius [2883] met [4876] him [846], and fell down [4098] at [1909] his feet [4228], and worshipped [4352] him.
4 And when the woman [0802] of Tekoah [08621] spake [0559] to the king [04428], she fell [05307] on her face [0639] to the ground [0776], and did obeisance [07812], and said [0559], Help [03467], O king [04428].
28 I pray thee, forgive [05375] the trespass [06588] of thine handmaid [0519]: for the LORD [03068] will certainly [06213] make [06213] my lord [0113] a sure [0539] house [01004]; because my lord [0113] fighteth [03898] the battles [04421] of the LORD [03068], and evil [07451] hath not been found [04672] in thee all thy days [03117].
41 And as soon as the lad [05288] was gone [0935], David [01732] arose [06965] out of a place toward [0681] the south [05045], and fell [05307] on his face [0639] to the ground [0776], and bowed [07812] himself three [07969] times [06471]: and they kissed [05401] one [0376] another [07453], and wept [01058] one [0376] with another [07453], until David [01732] exceeded [01431].
