Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse

THE ASSAULT OF GOG, AND GOD'S JUDGMENT ON HIM. (Eze. 38:1-23)
Gog--the prince of the land of Magog. The title was probably a common one of the kings of the country, as "Pharaoh" in Egypt. Chakan was the name given by the Northern Asiatics to their king, and is still a title of the Turkish sultan: "Gog" may be a contraction of this. In Ezekiel's time a horde of northern Asiatics, termed by the Greeks "Scythians," and probably including the Moschi and Tibareni, near the Caucasus, here ("Meshech . . . Tubal") undertook an expedition against Egypt [HERODOTUS, 1.103-106]. These names might be adopted by Ezekiel from the historical fact familiar to men at the time, as ideal titles for the great last anti-Christian confederacy.
Magog-- (Gen 10:2; Ch1 1:5). The name of a land belonging to Japheth's posterity. Maha, in Sanskrit, means "land." Gog is the ideal political head of the region. In Rev 20:8, Gog and Magog are two peoples.
the chief prince--rather, "prince of Rosh," or "Rhos" [Septuagint]. The Scythian Tauri in the Crimea were so called. The Araxes also was called "Rhos." The modern Russians may have hence assumed their name, as Moscow and Tobolsk from Meshech and Tubal, though their proper ancient name was Slavi, or Wends. HENGSTENBERG supports English Version, as "Rosh" is not found in the Bible. "Magog was Gog's original kingdom, though he acquired also Meshech and Tubal, so as to be called their chief prince." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Gog ... - Gog of the land of Magog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. "Gog" is here the name of a captain from "the land of Magog" (compare Gen 10:2) the name of a people of the north, placed between "Gomer" (the Cimmerians) and "Madai" (the Medes). In the History of Assurbanipal from cuneiform inscriptions, a chief of the Saka (Scythians), called Ga-a-gi, is identified by some with Gog. Rosh, if a proper name, occurs in this connection only. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
Gog
That the primary reference is to the northern (European) powers, headed up by Russia, all agree. The whole passage should be read in connection with (Zac 12:1-4); (Zac 14:1-9); (Mat 24:14-30); (Rev 14:14-20); (Rev 19:17-21); "gog" is the prince, "Magog," his land. The reference to Meshech and Tubal (Moscow and Tobolsk) is a clear mark of identification. Russia and the northern powers have been the latest persecutors of dispersed Israel, and it is congruous both with divine justice and with the covenants (for example

that destruction should fall at the climax of the last mad attempt to exterminate the remnant of Israel in Jerusalem. The whole prophecy belongs to the yet future "day of Jehovah"; (Isa 2:10-22); (Rev 19:11-21) and to the battle of Armageddon (Rev 16:14).

but includes also the final revolt of the nations at the close of the kingdom-age. (Rev 20:7-9). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Gog - This cannot be one single person, or prince, though perhaps it points out some one, by whom the troubles foretold were begun. Some believe the time is still to come, wherein this prophecy is to be fulfilled. And that it must intend those enemies of God's church who descended from the Scythians, and are now masters of Cappadocia, Iberia, Armenia, or are in confederacy with the Tartars, and those northern heathens. But others think, all the enemies of Israel in all quarters, both open and secret are here intended, and that the Antichristian forces and combination, are what the prophet foretells. Magog - Magog is, at least, part of Scythia, and comprehends Syria, in which was Hierapolis. taken by the Scythians, and called of them Scythopolis. It is that country, which now is in subjection to the Turks, and may be extended thro' Asia minor, the countries of Sarmatia, and many others, under more than one in succession of time. And in the last time under some one active and daring prince, all their power will be stirred up against Christians. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog - This is allowed to be the most difficult prophecy in the Old Testament. It is difficult to us, because we know not the king nor people intended by it: but I am satisfied they were well known by these names in the time that the prophet wrote.
I have already remarked in the introduction to this book that there are but two opinions on this subject that appear to be at all probable:
1. That which makes Gog Cambyses, king of Persia; and,
2. That which makes him Antiochus Epiphanes, king of Syria.
And between these two (for one or other is supposed to be the person intended) men are much divided.
Calmet, one of the most judicious commentators that ever wrote on the Bible, declares for Cambyses; and supports his opinion, in opposition to all others, by many arguments.
Mr. Mede supposes the Americans are meant who were originally colonies of the Scythians who were descendants of Magog, son of Japheth. Houbigant declares for the Scythians, whose neighbors were the people of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, that is the Russians, Muscovites, and Tybareni or Cappadocians. Several eminent critics espouse this opinion. Rabbi David Kimchi says the Christians and Turks are meant: and of later opinions there are several, founded in the ocean of conjecture. Calmet says expressly, that Gog is Cambyses, king of Persia, who on his return from the land of Egypt, died in Judea. The Revelation David Martin, pastor of the Waloon church at Utrecht, concludes, after examining all previous opinions, that Antiochus Epiphanes, the great enemy on the Israelites, is alone intended here; and that Gog, which signifies covered, is an allusion to the well-known character of Antiochus, whom historians describe as an artful, cunning, and dissembling man. See Dan 8:23, Dan 8:25; Dan 11:23, Dan 11:27, Dan 11:32. Magog he supposes to mean the country of Syria. Of this opinion the following quotation from Pliny, Hist. Nat., lib. v., c. 23, seems a proof; who, speaking of Coele-Syria, says Coele habet Apamiam Marsyia amne divisam a Nazarinorum Tetrarchia. Bambycem quam alio nomine Hierapolis vocatur, Syris vero Magog. "Coele-Syria has Apamia separated from the tetrarchy of the Nazarenes by the river Marsyia; and Bambyce, otherwise called Hierapolis; but by the Syrians, Magog."
I shall at present examine the text by this latter opinion.
Chief prince of Meshech and Tubal - These probably mean the auxiliary forces, over whom Antiochus was supreme; they were the Muscovites and Cappadocians. |
8 And [2532] shall go out [1831] to deceive [4105] the nations [1484] which [3588] are in [1722] the four [5064] quarters [1137] of the earth [1093], Gog [1136] and [2532] Magog [3098], to gather [4863] them [846] together [4863] to [1519] battle [4171]: the number [706] of whom [3739] is as [5613] the sand [285] of the sea [2281].
5 The sons [01121] of Japheth [03315]; Gomer [01586], and Magog [04031], and Madai [04074], and Javan [03120], and Tubal [08422], and Meshech [04902], and Tiras [08494].
2 The sons [01121] of Japheth [03315]; Gomer [01586], and Magog [04031], and Madai [04074], and Javan [03120], and Tubal [08422], and Meshech [04902], and Tiras [08494].
2 The sons [01121] of Japheth [03315]; Gomer [01586], and Magog [04031], and Madai [04074], and Javan [03120], and Tubal [08422], and Meshech [04902], and Tiras [08494].
7 And [2532] when [3752] the thousand [5507] years [2094] are expired [5055], Satan [4567] shall be loosed [3089] out of [1537] his [846] prison [5438],
8 And [2532] shall go out [1831] to deceive [4105] the nations [1484] which [3588] are in [1722] the four [5064] quarters [1137] of the earth [1093], Gog [1136] and [2532] Magog [3098], to gather [4863] them [846] together [4863] to [1519] battle [4171]: the number [706] of whom [3739] is as [5613] the sand [285] of the sea [2281].
9 And [2532] they went up [305] on [1909] the breadth [4114] of the earth [1093], and [2532] compassed [2944] the camp [3925] of the saints [40] about [2944], and [2532] the beloved [25] city [4172]: and [2532] fire [4442] came down [2597] from [575] God [2316] out of [1537] heaven [3772], and [2532] devoured [2719] them [846].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
14 For [1063] they are [1526] the spirits [4151] of devils [1142], working [4160] miracles [4592], which go forth [1607] [3739] [1607] unto [1909] the kings [935] of the earth [1093] and [2532] of the whole [3650] world [3625], to gather [4863] them [846] to [1519] the battle [4171] of that [1565] great [3173] day [2250] of God [2316] Almighty [3841].
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] heaven [3772] opened [455], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] horse [2462]; and [2532] he that sat [2521] upon [1909] him [846] was called [2564] Faithful [4103] and [2532] True [228], and [2532] in [1722] righteousness [1343] he doth judge [2919] and [2532] make war [4170].
12 [1161] His [846] eyes [3788] were as [5613] a flame [5395] of fire [4442], and [2532] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] were many [4183] crowns [1238]; and he had [2192] a name [3686] written [1125], that [3739] no man [3762] knew [1492], but [1508] he himself [846].
13 And [2532] he was clothed [4016] with a vesture [2440] dipped [911] in blood [129]: and [2532] his [846] name [3686] is called [2564] The Word [3056] of God [2316].
14 And [2532] the armies [4753] which were [3588] in [1722] heaven [3772] followed [190] him [846] upon [1909] white [3022] horses [2462], clothed [1746] in fine linen [1039], white [3022] and [2532] clean [2513].
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
10 Enter [0935] into the rock [06697], and hide [02934] thee in the dust [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347].
11 The lofty [01365] looks [05869] of man [0120] shall be humbled [08213], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be bowed down [07817], and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
12 For the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall be upon every one that is proud [01343] and lofty [07311], and upon every one that is lifted up [05375]; and he shall be brought low [08213]:
13 And upon all the cedars [0730] of Lebanon [03844], that are high [07311] and lifted up [05375], and upon all the oaks [0437] of Bashan [01316],
14 And upon all the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon all the hills [01389] that are lifted up [05375],
15 And upon every high [01364] tower [04026], and upon every fenced [01219] wall [02346],
16 And upon all the ships [0591] of Tarshish [08659], and upon all pleasant [02532] pictures [07914].
17 And the loftiness [01365] of man [0120] shall be bowed down [07817], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be made low [08213]: and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
18 And the idols [0457] he shall utterly [03632] abolish [02498].
19 And they shall go [0935] into the holes [04631] of the rocks [06697], and into the caves [04247] of the earth [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
20 In that day [03117] a man [0120] shall cast [07993] his idols [0457] of silver [03701], and his idols [0457] of gold [02091], which they made each one for himself [06213] to worship [07812], to the moles [02661] [06512] and to the bats [05847];
21 To go [0935] into the clefts [05366] of the rocks [06697], and into the tops [05585] of the ragged rocks [05553], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
22 Cease [02308] ye from man [0120], whose breath [05397] is in his nostrils [0639]: for wherein is he to be accounted of [02803]?
3 That then the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] will turn [07725] thy captivity [07622], and have compassion [07355] upon thee, and will return [07725] and gather [06908] thee from all the nations [05971], whither the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath scattered [06327] thee.
18 In the same [01931] day [03117] the LORD [03068] made [03772] a covenant [01285] with Abram [087], saying [0559], Unto thy seed [02233] have I given [05414] this land [0776], from the river [05104] of Egypt [04714] unto the great [01419] river [05104], the river [05104] Euphrates [06578]:
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
14 And [2532] I looked [1492], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] cloud [3507], and [2532] upon [1909] the cloud [3507] one sat [2521] like [3664] unto the Son [5207] of man [444], having [2192] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] a golden [5552] crown [4735], and [2532] in [1722] his [846] hand [5495] a sharp [3691] sickle [1407].
15 And [2532] another [243] angel [32] came [1831] out of [1537] the temple [3485], crying [2896] with [1722] a loud [3173] voice [5456] to him that sat [2521] on [1909] the cloud [3507], Thrust in [3992] thy [4675] sickle [1407], and [2532] reap [2325]: for [3754] the time [5610] is come [2064] for thee [4671] to reap [2325]; for [3754] the harvest [2326] of the earth [1093] is ripe [3583].
16 And [2532] he that sat [2521] on [1909] the cloud [3507] thrust in [906] his [846] sickle [1407] on [1909] the earth [1093]; and [2532] the earth [1093] was reaped [2325].
17 And [2532] another [243] angel [32] came [1831] out of [1537] the temple [3485] which [3588] is in [1722] heaven [3772], he [846] also [2532] having [2192] a sharp [3691] sickle [1407].
18 And [2532] another [243] angel [32] came [1831] out [1537] from the altar [2379], which had [2192] power [1849] over [1909] fire [4442]; and [2532] cried [5455] with a loud [3173] cry [2906] to him that had [2192] the sharp [3691] sickle [1407], saying [3004], Thrust in [3992] thy [4675] sharp [3691] sickle [1407], and [2532] gather [5166] the clusters [1009] of the vine [288] of the earth [1093]; for [3754] her [846] grapes [4718] are fully ripe [187].
19 And [2532] the angel [32] thrust in [906] his [846] sickle [1407] into [1519] the earth [1093], and [2532] gathered [5166] the vine [288] of the earth [1093], and [2532] cast [906] it into [1519] the great [3173] winepress [3025] of the wrath [2372] of God [2316].
20 And [2532] the winepress [3025] was trodden [3961] without [1854] the city [4172], and [2532] blood [129] came [1831] out of [1537] the winepress [3025], even unto [891] the horse [2462] bridles [5469], by the space of [575] a thousand [5507] and six hundred [1812] furlongs [4712].
14 And [2532] this [5124] gospel [2098] of the kingdom [932] shall be preached [2784] in [1722] all [3650] the world [3625] for [1519] a witness [3142] unto all [3956] nations [1484]; and [2532] then [5119] shall the end [5056] come [2240].
15 When [3752] ye therefore [3767] shall see [1492] the abomination [946] of desolation [2050], spoken of [4483] by [1223] Daniel [1158] the prophet [4396], stand [2476] [2476] in [1722] the holy [40] place [5117], (whoso readeth [314], let him understand [3539]
16 Then [5119] let them which be in [1722] Judaea [2449] flee [5343] into [1909] the mountains [3735]:
17 Let him which is on [1909] the housetop [1430] not [3361] come down [2597] to take [142] any thing [5100] out of [1537] his [846] house [3614]:
18 [2532] Neither [3361] let him which is in [1722] the field [68] return [1994] back [3694] to take [142] his [846] clothes [2440].
19 And [1161] woe [3759] unto them that are [2192] with [1722] child [1064], and [2532] to them that give suck [2337] in [1722] those [1565] days [2250]!
20 But [1161] pray ye [4336] that [3363] your [5216] flight [5437] be [1096] not [3363] in the winter [5494], neither [3366] on [1722] the sabbath day [4521]:
21 For [1063] then [5119] shall be [2071] great [3173] tribulation [2347], such as [3634] was [1096] not [3756] since [575] the beginning [746] of the world [2889] to this [2193] time [3568], no [3761], nor ever [3364] shall be [1096].
22 And [2532] except [1508] those [1565] days [2250] should be shortened [2856], there [3756] should [302] no [3956] flesh [4561] be saved [4982]: but [1161] for [1223] the elect's sake [1588] those [1565] days [2250] shall be shortened [2856].
23 Then [5119] if [1437] any man [5100] shall say [2036] unto you [5213], Lo [2400], here [5602] is Christ [5547], or [2228] there [5602]; believe [4100] it not [3361].
24 For [1063] there shall arise [1453] false Christs [5580], and [2532] false prophets [5578], and [2532] shall shew [1325] great [3173] signs [4592] and [2532] wonders [5059]; insomuch that [5620], if [1487] it were possible [1415], they shall deceive [4105] the very [2532] elect [1588].
25 Behold [2400], I have told [4280] you [5213] before [4280].
26 Wherefore [3767] if [1437] they shall say [2036] unto you [5213], Behold [2400], he is [2076] in [1722] the desert [2048]; go [1831] not [3361] forth [1831]: behold [2400], he is in [1722] the secret chambers [5009]; believe [4100] it not [3361].
27 For [1063] as [5618] the lightning [796] cometh [1831] out of [575] the east [395], and [2532] shineth [5316] even unto [2193] the west [1424]; so [3779] shall [2071] also [2532] the coming [3952] of the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071].
28 For [1063] wheresoever [1437] [3699] the carcase [4430] is [5600], there [1563] will [4863] the eagles [105] be gathered together [4863].
29 Immediately [1161] [2112] after [3326] the tribulation [2347] of those [1565] days [2250] shall the sun [2246] be darkened [4654], and [2532] the moon [4582] shall [1325] not [3756] give [1325] her [846] light [5338], and [2532] the stars [792] shall fall [4098] from [575] heaven [3772], and [2532] the powers [1411] of the heavens [3772] shall be shaken [4531]:
30 And [2532] then [5119] shall appear [5316] the sign [4592] of the Son [5207] of man [444] in [1722] heaven [3772]: and [2532] then [5119] shall [2875] all [3956] the tribes [5443] of the earth [1093] mourn [2875], and [2532] they shall see [3700] the Son [5207] of man [444] coming [2064] in [1909] the clouds [3507] of heaven [3772] with [3326] power [1411] and [2532] great [4183] glory [1391].
1 Behold, the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] cometh [0935], and thy spoil [07998] shall be divided [02505] in the midst [07130] of thee.
2 For I will gather [0622] all nations [01471] against Jerusalem [03389] to battle [04421]; and the city [05892] shall be taken [03920], and the houses [01004] rifled [08155], and the women [0802] ravished [07901] [07693]; and half [02677] of the city [05892] shall go forth [03318] into captivity [01473], and the residue [03499] of the people [05971] shall not be cut off [03772] from the city [05892].
3 Then shall the LORD [03068] go forth [03318], and fight [03898] against those nations [01471], as when [03117] he fought [03898] in the day [03117] of battle [07128].
4 And his feet [07272] shall stand [05975] in that day [03117] upon the mount [02022] of Olives [02132], which is before [06440] Jerusalem [03389] on the east [06924], and the mount [02022] of Olives [02132] shall cleave [01234] in the midst [02677] thereof toward the east [04217] and toward the west [03220], and there shall be a very [03966] great [01419] valley [01516]; and half [02677] of the mountain [02022] shall remove [04185] toward the north [06828], and half [02677] of it toward the south [05045].
5 And ye shall flee [05127] to the valley [01516] of the mountains [02022]; for the valley [01516] of the mountains [02022] shall reach [05060] unto Azal [0682]: yea, ye shall flee [05127], like as ye fled [05127] from before [06440] the earthquake [07494] in the days [03117] of Uzziah [05818] king [04428] of Judah [03063]: and the LORD [03068] my God [0430] shall come [0935], and all the saints [06918] with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the light [0216] shall not be clear [03368], nor dark [07087] [07087]:
7 But it shall be one [0259] day [03117] which shall be known [03045] to the LORD [03068], not day [03117], nor night [03915]: but it shall come to pass, that at evening [06153] time [06256] it shall be light [0216].
8 And it shall be in that day [03117], that living [02416] waters [04325] shall go out [03318] from Jerusalem [03389]; half [02677] of them toward the former [06931] sea [03220], and half [02677] of them toward the hinder [0314] sea [03220]: in summer [07019] and in winter [02779] shall it be.
9 And the LORD [03068] shall be king [04428] over all the earth [0776]: in that day [03117] shall there be one [0259] LORD [03068], and his name [08034] one [0259].
1 The burden [04853] of the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] for Israel [03478], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], which stretcheth [05186] forth the heavens [08064], and layeth the foundation [03245] of the earth [0776], and formeth [03335] the spirit [07307] of man [0120] within [07130] him.
2 Behold, I will make [07760] Jerusalem [03389] a cup [05592] of trembling [07478] unto all the people [05971] round about [05439], when they shall be in the siege [04692] both against Judah [03063] and against Jerusalem [03389].
3 And in that day [03117] will I make [07760] Jerusalem [03389] a burdensome [04614] stone [068] for all people [05971]: all that burden [06006] themselves with it shall be cut in pieces [08295] [08295], though all the people [01471] of the earth [0776] be gathered together [0622] against it.
4 In that day [03117], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], I will smite [05221] every horse [05483] with astonishment [08541], and his rider [07392] with madness [07697]: and I will open [06491] mine eyes [05869] upon the house [01004] of Judah [03063], and will smite [05221] every horse [05483] of the people [05971] with blindness [05788].
32 And such as do wickedly [07561] against the covenant [01285] shall he corrupt [02610] by flatteries [02514]: but the people [05971] that do know [03045] their God [0430] shall be strong [02388], and do [06213] exploits.
27 And both [08147] these kings [04428]' hearts [03824] shall be to do mischief [04827] [07451], and they shall speak [01696] lies [03577] at one [0259] table [07979]; but it shall not prosper [06743]: for yet the end [07093] shall be at the time appointed [04150].
23 And after the league [02266] made with him he shall work [06213] deceitfully [04820]: for he shall come up [05927], and shall become strong [06105] with a small [04592] people [01471].
25 And through his policy [07922] also he shall cause craft [04820] to prosper [06743] in his hand [03027]; and he shall magnify [01431] himself in his heart [03824], and by peace [07962] shall destroy [07843] many [07227]: he shall also stand up [05975] against the Prince [08269] of princes [08269]; but he shall be broken [07665] without [0657] hand [03027].
23 And in the latter time [0319] of their kingdom [04438], when the transgressors [06586] are come to the full [08552], a king [04428] of fierce [05794] countenance [06440], and understanding [0995] dark sentences [02420], shall stand up [05975].
