In Ezek. 35-36 we see the devastation of Edom, and the restoration of Israel. Edom was included among the nations against which Ezekiel prophesied Eze 25:12-14. But its fuller doom was reserved for this place, because Edom was one of the surrounding nations that profited at first by Judah's fall, and because it helps by way of contrast to bring out in a marked way the better future designed for Israel. Edom is the God-hating, God-opposing power, ever distinguished for its bitter hatred against Israel; and so the ruin of Edom is the triumph of Israel in the power of God.

The Devastation of Edom Eze 35:1. And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, Eze 35:2. Son of man, set thy face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, Eze 35:3. And say to it, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I will deal with thee, Mount Seir, and will stretch out my hand against thee, and make thee waste and devastation. Eze 35:4. Thy cities will I make into ruins, and thou wilt become a waste, and shalt know that I am Jehovah. Eze 35:5. Because thou cherishest eternal enmity, and gavest up the sons of Israel to the sword at the time of their distress, at the time of the final transgression, Eze 35:6. Therefore, as truly as I live, is the saying of the Lord Jehovah, I will make thee blood, and blood shall pursue thee; since thou hast not hated blood, therefore blood shall pursue thee. Eze 35:7. The theme of this prophecy, viz., "Edom and its cities are to become a desert" (Eze 35:2-4), is vindicated and earnestly elaborated in two strophes, commencing with 'יען וגו (Eze 35:5 and Eze 35:10), and closing, like the announcement of the theme itself (Eze 35:4), with 'כּי אני (וידעוּ) וידעתּם, by a distinct statement of the sins of Edom. - Already, in Ezekiel 25, Edom has been named among the hostile border nations which are threatened with destruction (Eze 35:12-14). The earlier prophecy applied to the Edomites, according to their historical relation to the people of Israel and the kingdom of Judah. In the present word of God, on the contrary, Edom comes into consideration, on the ground of its hostile attitude towards the covenant people, as the representative of the world and of mankind in its hostility to the people and kingdom of God, as in Isa 34 and Isa 63:1-6. This is apparent from the fact that devastation is to be prepared for Edom, when the whole earth rejoices (Eze 35:14), which does not apply to Edom as a small and solitary nation, and still more clearly from the circumstance that, in the promise of salvation in Ezekiel 36, not all Edom alone (Eze 35:5), but the remnant of the heathen nations generally (Eze 36:3-7 and Eze 36:15), are mentioned as the enemies from whose disgrace and oppression Israel is to be delivered. For Eze 35:2, compare Eze 13:17. הר is the name given to the mountainous district inhabited by the Edomites, between the Dead Sea and the Elanitic Gulf (see the comm. on Gen 36:9). The prophecy is directed against the land; but it also applies to the nation, which brings upon itself the desolation of its land by its hostility to Israel. For Eze 35:3, compare Eze 6:14, etc. חרבּה, destruction. The sin of Edom mentioned in Eze 35:5 is eternal enmity toward Israel, which has also been imputed to the Philistines in Eze 25:15, but which struck deeper root, in the case of Edom, in the hostile attitude of Esau toward Jacob (Gen 25:22. and Gen 27:37), and was manifested, as Amos (Amo 1:11) has already said, in the constant retention of its malignity toward the covenant nation, so that Edom embraced every opportunity to effect its destruction, and according to the charge brought against it by Ezekiel, gave up the sons of Israel to the sword when the kingdom of Judah fell. הנּיר על , lit., to pour upon ( - into) the hands of the sword, i.e., to deliver up to the power of the sword (cf. Psa 63:11; Jer 18:21). בּעת recalls to mind בּיום אידם in Oba 1:13; but here it is more precisely defined by בּעת עון , and limited to the time of the overthrow of the Israelites, when Jerusalem was taken and destroyed by the Chaldeans. בּעת עון קץ, as in Eze 21:30. On account of this display of its hostility, the Lord will make Edom blood (Eze 35:6). This expression is probably chosen for the play upon the words דּם and אדם. Edom shall become what its name suggests. Making it blood does not mean merely filling it with bloodshed, or reddening the soil with blood (Hitzig); but, as in Eze 16:38, turning it as it were into blood, or causing it to vanish therein. Blood shall pursue thee, "as blood-guiltiness invariably pursues a murderer, cries for vengeance, and so delivers him up to punishment" (Hvernick). אם לא cannot be the particle employed in swearing, and dependent upon חי־אני, since this particle introduces an affirmative declaration, which would be unsuitable here, inasmuch as דּם in this connection cannot possibly signify blood-relationship. אם לא means "if not," in which the conditional meaning of אם coincides with the causal, "if" being equivalent to "since." The unusual separation of the לא from the verb is occasioned by the fact that דּם is placed before the verb to avoid collision with ודּם. To hate blood is the same as to have a horror of bloodshed or murder. This threat is carried out still further in Eze 35:7 and Eze 35:8. The land of Edom is to become a complete and perpetual devastation; its inhabitants are to be exterminated by war. The form שׁממה stands for שׁמּמה, and is not to be changed into משׁמּה. Considering the frequency with which משׁמּה occurs, the supposition that we have here a copyist's error is by no means a probable one, and still less probable is the perpetuation of such an error. עבר ושׁב, as in Zac 7:14. For Eze 35:8 compare Eze 32:5-6 and Eze 31:12. The Chetib תּישׁבנה is scriptio plena for תּשׁבנה, the imperfect Kal of ישׁב in the intransitive sense to be inhabited. The Keri תּשׁבנה, from שׁוּב, is a needless and unsuitable correction, since שׁוּב does not mean restitui. In the second strophe, Eze 35:10-15, the additional reason assigned for the desolation of Edom is its longing for the possession of Israel and its land, of which it desired to take forcible possession, although it knew that they belonged to Jehovah, whereby the hatred of Edom toward Israel became contempt of Jehovah. The two peoples and the two lands are Israel and Judah with their lands, and therefore the whole of the holy people and land. את is the sign of the accusative: as for the two peoples, they are mine. The suffix appended to ירשׁנוּה is neuter, and is to be taken as referring generally to what has gone before. ויהוה שׁם היה is a circumstantial clause, through which the desire of Edom is placed in the right light, and characterized as an attack upon Jehovah Himself. Jehovah was there - namely, in the land of which Edom wished to take possession. Kliefoth's rendering, "and yet Jehovah is there," is opposed to Hebrew usage, by changing the preterite היה into a present; and the objection which he offers to the only rendering that is grammatically admissible, viz., "when Jehovah was there," to the effect "that it attributes to Ezekiel the thought that the Holy Land had once been the land and dwelling-place of God, but was so no longer," calls in question the actual historical condition of things without the slightest reason. For Jehovah had really forsaken His dwelling-place in Canaan before the destruction of the temple, but without thereby renouncing His right to the land; since it was only for the sins of Israel that He had given up the temple, city, and land to be laid waste by the heathen. "But Edom had acted as if Israel existed among the nations without God, and Jehovah had departed from it for ever" (Hvernick); or rather as if Jehovah were a powerless and useless Deity, who had not been able to defend His people against the might of the heathen nations. The Lord will requite Edom for this, in a manner answering to its anger and envy, which had both sprung from hatred. נודעתּי בם, "I will make myself known among them (the Israelites) when I judge thee;" i.e., by the fact that He punishes Edom for its sin, He will prove to Israel that He is a God who does not suffer His people and His possession to be attacked with impunity. From this shall Edom learn that He is Jehovah, the omniscient God, who has heard the revilings of His enemies (Eze 35:12, Eze 35:13), and the almighty God, who rewards those who utter such proud sayings according to their deeds (Eze 35:14 and Eze 35:15). נאצות has retained the Kametz on account of the guttural in the first tone, in contrast with נאצות in Neh 9:18, Neh 9:26 (cf. Ewald, 69b). - The expression "mountains of Israel," for the land of Israel, in Eze 35:12 and Eze 36:1, is occasioned by the antithesis "mountain (mountain-range) of Seir." The Chetib hmmhs is to be pronounced שׁממה, and to be retained in spite of the Keri. The singular of the neuter gender is used with emphasis in a broken and emotional address, and is to be taken as referring ad sensum to the land. הגדּיל בּפה, to magnify or boast with the mouth, i.e., to utter proud sayings against God, in other words, actually to deride God (compare הגדּיל פּה in Oba 1:12, which has a kindred meaning). העתיר, used here according to Aramean usage for העשׁיר, to multiply, or heap up. In כּשׂמה, in Eze 35:14, כּ is a particle of time, as it frequently is before infinitives (e.g., Jos 6:20), when all the earth rejoices, not "over thy desolation" (Hitzig), which does not yield any rational thought, but when joy is prepared for all the world, I will prepare devastation for thee. Through this antithesis כּל־הארץ is limited to the world, with the exception of Edom, i.e., to that portion of the human race which stood in a different relation to God and His people from that of Edom; in other words, which acknowledged the Lord as the true God. It follows from this, that Edom represents the world at enmity against God. In כּשׂמחתך (Eze 35:15) כ is a particle of comparison; and the meaning of Eze 35:15 is: as thou didst rejoice over the desolation of the inheritance of the house of Israel, so will I cause others to rejoice over thy desolation. In Eze 35:15 we agree with the lxx, Vulgate, Syriac, and others, in taking תּהיה as the second person, not as the third. כּל־אדום כּלּהּ serves to strengthen הר־שׂעיר (compare Eze 11:15 and Eze 36:10).

¹ Also, thou son [01121] of man [0120], prophesy [05012] unto the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], and say [0559], Ye mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], hear [08085] the word [01697] of the LORD [03068]:

²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient [04784], and rebelled [04775] against thee, and cast [07993] thy law [08451] behind [0310] their backs [01458], and slew [02026] thy prophets [05030] which testified [05749] against them to turn [07725] them to thee, and they wrought [06213] great [01419] provocations [05007].

¹⁸ Yea, when they had made [06213] them a molten [04541] calf [05695], and said [0559], This is thy God [0430] that brought thee up [05927] out of Egypt [04714], and had wrought [06213] great [01419] provocations [05007];

¹⁴ Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; When the whole earth [0776] rejoiceth [08055], I will make [06213] thee desolate [08077].

¹³ Thus with your mouth [06310] ye have boasted [01431] against me, and have multiplied [06280] your words [01697] against me: I have heard [08085] them.

¹⁰ Because thou hast said [0559], These two [08147] nations [01471] and these two [08147] countries [0776] shall be mine, and we will possess [03423] it; whereas the LORD [03068] was there:
¹¹ Therefore, as I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], I will even do [06213] according to thine anger [0639], and according to thine envy [07068] which thou hast used [06213] out of thy hatred [08135] against them; and I will make myself known [03045] among them, when I have judged [08199] thee.
¹² And thou shalt know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], and that I have heard [08085] all thy blasphemies [05007] which thou hast spoken [0559] against the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], saying [0559], They are laid desolate [08074] [08077], they are given [05414] us to consume [0402].
¹³ Thus with your mouth [06310] ye have boasted [01431] against me, and have multiplied [06280] your words [01697] against me: I have heard [08085] them.
¹⁴ Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; When the whole earth [0776] rejoiceth [08055], I will make [06213] thee desolate [08077].
¹⁵ As thou didst rejoice [08057] at the inheritance [05159] of the house [01004] of Israel [03478], because it was desolate [08074], so will I do [06213] unto thee: thou shalt be desolate [08077], O mount [02022] Seir [08165], and all Idumea [0123], even all of it: and they shall know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068].

¹² And strangers [02114], the terrible [06184] of the nations [01471], have cut him off [03772], and have left [05203] him: upon the mountains [02022] and in all the valleys [01516] his branches [01808] are fallen [05307], and his boughs [06288] are broken [07665] by all the rivers [0650] of the land [0776]; and all the people [05971] of the earth [0776] are gone down [03381] from his shadow [06738], and have left [05203] him.

⁵ And I will lay [05414] thy flesh [01320] upon the mountains [02022], and fill [04390] the valleys [01516] with thy height [07419].
⁶ I will also water [08248] with thy blood [01818] the land [0776] wherein thou swimmest [06824], even to the mountains [02022]; and the rivers [0650] shall be full [04390] of thee.

⁸ And I will fill [04390] his mountains [02022] with his slain [02491] men: in thy hills [01389], and in thy valleys [01516], and in all thy rivers [0650], shall they fall [05307] that are slain [02491] with the sword [02719].

¹⁴ But I scattered them with a whirlwind [05590] among all the nations [01471] whom they knew [03045] not. Thus the land [0776] was desolate [08074] after [0310] them, that no man passed through [05674] nor returned [07725]: for they laid [07760] the pleasant [02532] land [0776] desolate [08047].

⁷ Thus will I make [05414] mount [02022] Seir [08165] most [08077] desolate [08077], and cut off [03772] from it him that passeth out [05674] and him that returneth [07725].

³⁸ And I will judge [08199] thee, as women that break wedlock [05003] and shed [08210] blood [01818] are judged [04941]; and I will give [05414] thee blood [01818] in fury [02534] and jealousy [07068].

⁶ Therefore, as I live [02416], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], I will prepare [06213] thee unto blood [01818], and blood [01818] shall pursue [07291] thee: sith [0518] thou hast not hated [08130] blood [01818], even blood [01818] shall pursue [07291] thee.

³⁰ Shall I cause it to return [07725] into his sheath [08593]? I will judge [08199] thee in the place [04725] where thou wast created [01254], in the land [0776] of thy nativity [04351].

¹³ Thou shouldest not have entered [0935] into the gate [08179] of my people [05971] in the day [03117] of their calamity [0343]; yea, thou shouldest not have looked [07200] on their affliction [07451] in the day [03117] of their calamity [0343], nor have laid [07971] hands on their substance [02428] in the day [03117] of their calamity [0343];

²¹ Therefore deliver up [05414] their children [01121] to the famine [07458], and pour out [05064] their blood by the force [03027] of the sword [02719]; and let their wives [0802] be bereaved [07909] of their children, and be widows [0490]; and let their men [0582] be put [02026] to death [04194]; let their young men [0970] be slain [05221] by the sword [02719] in battle [04421].

¹¹ But the king [04428] shall rejoice [08055] in God [0430]; every one that sweareth [07650] by him shall glory [01984]: but the mouth [06310] of them that speak [01696] lies [08267] shall be stopped [05534].

¹¹ Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; For three [07969] transgressions [06588] of Edom [0123], and for four [0702], I will not turn away [07725] the punishment thereof; because he did pursue [07291] his brother [0251] with the sword [02719], and did cast off [07843] all pity [07356], and his anger [0639] did tear [02963] perpetually [05703], and he kept [08104] his wrath [05678] for ever [05331]:

³⁷ And Isaac [03327] answered [06030] and said [0559] unto Esau [06215], Behold, I have made [07760] him thy lord [01376], and all his brethren [0251] have I given [05414] to him for servants [05650]; and with corn [01715] and wine [08492] have I sustained [05564] him: and what shall I do [06213] now [0645] unto thee, my son [01121]?

¹⁵ Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Because the Philistines [06430] have dealt [06213] by revenge [05360], and have taken [05358] vengeance [05359] with a despiteful [07589] heart [05315], to destroy [04889] it for the old [05769] hatred [0342];

⁵ Because thou hast had a perpetual [05769] hatred [0342], and hast shed [05064] the blood of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] by the force [03027] of the sword [02719] in the time [06256] of their calamity [0343], in the time [06256] that their iniquity [05771] had an end [07093]:

¹⁴ So will I stretch out [05186] my hand [03027] upon them, and make [05414] the land [0776] desolate [08077], yea, more desolate [04923] than the wilderness [04057] toward Diblath [01689], in all their habitations [04186]: and they shall know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068].

³ And say [0559] unto it, Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Behold, O mount [02022] Seir [08165], I am against thee, and I will stretch out [05186] mine hand [03027] against thee, and I will make [05414] thee most [04923] desolate [08077].

⁹ And these are the generations [08435] of Esau [06215] the father [01] of the Edomites [0123] in mount [02022] Seir [08165]:

¹⁷ Likewise, thou son [01121] of man [0120], set [07760] thy face [06440] against the daughters [01323] of thy people [05971], which prophesy [05012] out of their own heart [03820]; and prophesy [05012] thou against them,

² Son [01121] of man [0120], set [07760] thy face [06440] against mount [02022] Seir [08165], and prophesy [05012] against it,

¹⁵ Neither will I cause men to hear [08085] in thee the shame [03639] of the heathen [01471] any more, neither shalt thou bear [05375] the reproach [02781] of the people [05971] any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations [01471] to fall [03782] any more, saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].

³ Therefore prophesy [05012] and say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Because they have made you desolate [08074], and swallowed you up [07602] on every side [05439], that ye might be a possession [04181] unto the residue [07611] of the heathen [01471], and ye are taken up [05927] in the lips [08193] of talkers [03956], and are an infamy [01681] of the people [05971]:
⁴ Therefore, ye mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], hear [08085] the word [01697] of the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] to the mountains [02022], and to the hills [01389], to the rivers [0650], and to the valleys [01516], to the desolate [08074] wastes [02723], and to the cities [05892] that are forsaken [05800], which became a prey [0957] and derision [03933] to the residue [07611] of the heathen [01471] that are round about [05439];
⁵ Therefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Surely in the fire [0784] of my jealousy [07068] have I spoken [01696] against the residue [07611] of the heathen [01471], and against all Idumea [0123], which have appointed [05414] my land [0776] into their possession [04181] with the joy [08057] of all their heart [03824], with despiteful [07589] minds [05315], to cast it out [04054] for a prey [0957].
⁶ Prophesy [05012] therefore concerning the land [0127] of Israel [03478], and say [0559] unto the mountains [02022], and to the hills [01389], to the rivers [0650], and to the valleys [01516], Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Behold, I have spoken [01696] in my jealousy [07068] and in my fury [02534], because ye have borne [05375] the shame [03639] of the heathen [01471]:
⁷ Therefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; I have lifted up [05375] mine hand [03027], Surely the heathen [01471] that are about [05439] you, they shall bear [05375] their shame [03639].

¹⁴ Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; When the whole earth [0776] rejoiceth [08055], I will make [06213] thee desolate [08077].

¹ Who is this that cometh [0935] from Edom [0123], with dyed [02556] garments [0899] from Bozrah [01224]? this that is glorious [01921] in his apparel [03830], travelling [06808] in the greatness [07230] of his strength [03581]? I that speak [01696] in righteousness [06666], mighty [07227] to save [03467].
² Wherefore art thou red [0122] in thine apparel [03830], and thy garments [0899] like him that treadeth [01869] in the winefat [01660]?
³ I have trodden [01869] the winepress [06333] alone; and of the people [05971] there was none [0376] with me: for I will tread [01869] them in mine anger [0639], and trample [07429] them in my fury [02534]; and their blood [05332] shall be sprinkled [05137] upon my garments [0899], and I will stain [01351] all my raiment [04403].
⁴ For the day [03117] of vengeance [05359] is in mine heart [03820], and the year [08141] of my redeemed [01350] is come [0935].
⁵ And I looked [05027], and there was none to help [05826]; and I wondered [08074] that there was none to uphold [05564]: therefore mine own arm [02220] brought salvation [03467] unto me; and my fury [02534], it upheld [05564] me.
⁶ And I will tread down [0947] the people [05971] in mine anger [0639], and make them drunk [07937] in my fury [02534], and I will bring down [03381] their strength [05332] to the earth [0776].

¹² And thou shalt know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], and that I have heard [08085] all thy blasphemies [05007] which thou hast spoken [0559] against the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], saying [0559], They are laid desolate [08074] [08077], they are given [05414] us to consume [0402].
