eyes upon the truth-- (Deu 32:4; Ch2 16:9). "Truth" is in contrast with "swear falsely" (Jer 5:2). The false-professing Jews could expect nothing but judgments from the God of truth.
stricken . . . not grieved-- (Jer 2:30; Isa 1:5; Isa 9:13).
refused . . . correction-- (Jer 7:28; Zep 3:2). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Upon the truth - God looks to the "faith," the upright purpose of the heart, and without it the nominal fealty of an oath is an abomination. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
O Lord - Dost not thou approve truth and faithfulness. Grieved - They have not repented. Consumed - God had not only lightly chastised them, but wasted them by several enemies, yet they have profited nothing by it. |
2 She obeyed [08085] not the voice [06963]; she received [03947] not correction [04148]; she trusted [0982] not in the LORD [03068]; she drew not near [07126] to her God [0430].
28 But thou shalt say [0559] unto them, This is a nation [01471] that obeyeth [08085] not the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068] their God [0430], nor receiveth [03947] correction [04148]: truth [0530] is perished [06], and is cut off [03772] from their mouth [06310].
13 For the people [05971] turneth [07725] not unto him that smiteth [05221] them, neither do they seek [01875] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
5 Why should ye be stricken [05221] any more? ye will revolt [05627] more and more [03254]: the whole head [07218] is sick [02483], and the whole heart [03824] faint [01742].
30 In vain [07723] have I smitten [05221] your children [01121]; they received [03947] no correction [04148]: your own sword [02719] hath devoured [0398] your prophets [05030], like a destroying [07843] lion [0738].
2 And though they say [0559], The LORD [03068] liveth [02416]; surely they swear [07650] falsely [08267].
9 For the eyes [05869] of the LORD [03068] run to and fro [07751] throughout the whole earth [0776], to shew himself strong [02388] in the behalf of them whose heart [03824] is perfect [08003] toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly [05528]: therefore from henceforth [06258] thou shalt have [03426] wars [04421].
4 He is the Rock [06697], his work [06467] is perfect [08549]: for all his ways [01870] are judgment [04941]: a God [0410] of truth [0530] and without iniquity [05766], just [06662] and right [03477] is he.
