Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Lord . . . made us this soul-- (Isa 57:16). Implying, "may my life (soul) be forfeited if I deceive thee" [CALVIN]. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
That made us this soul - This very unusual addition to the formula of an oath Sa1 20:3 was intended to strengthen it. By acknowledging that his soul was God's workmanship Zedekiah also implied his belief in God's power over it. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
As the Lord liveth, that made us this soul - He is the living God, and he is the Author of that life which each of us possesses; and as sure as he lives, and we live by him, I will not put thee to death, nor give thee into the hands of those men who seek thy life. A very solemn oath; and the first instance on record of the profane custom of swearing by the soul. |
16 For I will not contend [07378] for ever [05769], neither will I be always [05331] wroth [07107]: for the spirit [07307] should fail [05848] before [06440] me, and the souls [05397] which I have made [06213].
3 And David [01732] sware [07650] moreover, and said [0559], Thy father [01] certainly [03045] knoweth [03045] that I have found [04672] grace [02580] in thine eyes [05869]; and he saith [0559], Let not Jonathan [03083] know [03045] this, lest he be grieved [06087]: but truly [0199] as the LORD [03068] liveth [02416], and as thy soul [05315] liveth [02416], there is but a step [06587] between me and death [04194].
