| in . . . court of . . . prison--that is, in the open space occupied by the guard, from which he was not allowed to depart, but where any of his friends might visit him (Jer 32:12; Jer 38:13, Jer 38:28). Marvellous obstinacy, that at the time when they were experiencing the truth of Jeremiah's words in the pressure of the siege, they should still keep the prophet in confinement [CALVIN]. The circumstances narrated (Jer 32:3-5) occurred at the beginning of the siege, when Jeremiah foretold the capture of the city (Jer 32:1; Jer 34:1-7; Jer 39:1). He was at that time put into free custody in the court of the prison. At the raising of the siege by Pharaoh-hophra, Jeremiah was on the point of repairing to Benjamin, when he was cast into "the dungeon," but obtained leave to be removed again to the court of the prison (Jer 37:12-21). When there he urged the Jews, on the second advance of the Chaldeans to the siege, to save themselves by submission to Nebuchadnezzar (Jer 38:2-3); in consequence of this the king, at the instigation of the princes, had him cast into a miry dungeon (Jer 38:4-6); again he was removed to the prison court at the intercession of a courtier (Jer 32:7-13), where he remained till the capture of the city (Jer 32:28), when he was liberated (Jer 39:11, &c.; Jer 40:1, &c.). |

17 Then Zedekiah [06667] the king [04428] sent [07971], and took him out [03947]: and the king [04428] asked [07592] him secretly [05643] in his house [01004], and said [0559], Is there any word [01697] from the LORD [03068]? 18 Moreover Jeremiah [03414] said [0559] unto king [04428] Zedekiah [06667], What have I offended [02398] against thee, or against thy servants [05650], or against this people [05971], that ye have put [05414] me in prison [01004] [03608]?
19 Where are now [0346] your prophets [05030] which prophesied [05012] unto you, saying [0559], The king [04428] of Babylon [0894] shall not come [0935] against you, nor against this land [0776]?
20 Therefore hear [08085] now, I pray thee, O my lord [0113] the king [04428]: let my supplication [08467], I pray thee, be accepted [05307] before [06440] thee; that thou cause me not to return [07725] to the house [01004] of Jonathan [03083] the scribe [05608], lest I die [04191] there.
21 Then Zedekiah [06667] the king [04428] commanded [06680] that they should commit [06485] Jeremiah [03414] into the court [02691] of the prison [04307], and that they should give [05414] him daily [03117] a piece [03603] of bread [03899] out of the bakers [0644] ' street [02351], until all the bread [03899] in the city [05892] were spent [08552]. 6 Then Jeremiah [03414] the prophet [05030] spake [01696] all these words [01697] unto Zedekiah [06667] king [04428] of Judah [03063] in Jerusalem [03389],
7 When the king [04428] of Babylon's [0894] army [02428] fought [03898] against Jerusalem [03389], and against all the cities [05892] of Judah [03063] that were left [03498], against Lachish [03923], and against Azekah [05825]: for these defenced [04013] cities [05892] remained [07604] of the cities [05892] of Judah [03063].

5 And he shall lead [03212] Zedekiah [06667] to Babylon [0894], and there shall he be until I visit [06485] him, saith [05002] the LORD [03068]: though ye fight [03898] with the Chaldeans [03778], ye shall not prosper [06743].
