A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
As Messianic prophecy extended over many years in which many political changes took place in harmony with these, it displayed its riches by a variety more effective than if it had been manifested all at once. As the moral condition of the Jews required in each instance, so Messiah was exhibited in a corresponding phase, thus becoming more and more the soul of the nation's life: so that He is represented as the antitypical Israel (Isa 49:3).

unto David--HENGSTENBERG observes that Isaiah dwells more on His prophetical and priestly office, which had already been partly set forth (Deu 18:18; Psa 110:4). Other prophets dwell more on His kingly office. Therefore here He is associated with "David" the king: but in Isa 11:1 with the then poor and unknown "Jesse."

righteous Branch--"the Branch of righteousness" (Jer 33:15); "The Branch" simply (Zac 3:8; Zac 6:12); "The Branch of the Lord" (Isa 4:2).

prosper--the very term applied to Messiah's undertaking (Isa 52:13, Margin; Isa 53:10). Righteousness or justice is the characteristic of Messiah elsewhere, too, in connection with our salvation or justification (Isa 53:11; Dan 9:24; Zac 9:9). So in the New Testament He is not merely "righteous" Himself, but "righteousness to us" (Co1 1:30), so that we become "the righteousness of God in Him" (Rom 10:3-4; Co2 5:19-21; Phi 3:9).

execute judgment and justice in the earth-- (Psa 72:2; Isa 9:7; Isa 32:1, Isa 32:18). Not merely a spiritual reign in the sense in which He is "our righteousness," but a righteous reign "in the earth" (Jer 3:17-18). In some passages He is said to come to judge, in others to reign. In Mat 25:34, He is called "the King." Psa 9:7 unites them. Compare Dan 7:22, Dan 7:26-27.

26 But the judgment [01780] shall sit [03488], and they shall take away [05709] his dominion [07985], to consume [08046] and to destroy [07] it unto [05705] the end [05491].
27 And the kingdom [04437] and dominion [07985], and the greatness [07238] of the kingdom [04437] under [08460] the whole [03606] heaven [08065], shall be given [03052] to the people [05972] of the saints [06922] of the most High [05946], whose kingdom [04437] is an everlasting [05957] kingdom [04437], and all [03606] dominions [07985] shall serve [06399] and obey [08086] him.
22 Until [05705] the Ancient [06268] of days [03118] came [0858] [01768], and judgment [01780] was given [03052] to the saints [06922] of the most High [05946]; and the time [02166] came [04291] that the saints [06922] possessed [02631] the kingdom [04437].
7 But the LORD [03068] shall endure [03427] for ever [05769]: he hath prepared [03559] his throne [03678] for judgment [04941].
34 Then [5119] shall the King [935] say [2046] unto them on [1537] his [846] right hand [1188], Come [1205], ye blessed [2127] of my [3450] Father [3962], inherit [2816] the kingdom [932] prepared [2090] for you [5213] from [575] the foundation [2602] of the world [2889]:
17 At that time [06256] they shall call [07121] Jerusalem [03389] the throne [03678] of the LORD [03068]; and all the nations [01471] shall be gathered [06960] unto it, to the name [08034] of the LORD [03068], to Jerusalem [03389]: neither shall they walk [03212] any more after [0310] the imagination [08307] of their evil [07451] heart [03820].
18 In those days [03117] the house [01004] of Judah [03063] shall walk [03212] with the house [01004] of Israel [03478], and they shall come [0935] together [03162] out of the land [0776] of the north [06828] to the land [0776] that I have given for an inheritance [05157] unto your fathers [01].
18 And my people [05971] shall dwell [03427] in a peaceable [07965] habitation [05116], and in sure [04009] dwellings [04908], and in quiet [07600] resting places [04496];
1 Behold, a king [04428] shall reign [04427] in righteousness [06664], and princes [08269] shall rule [08323] in judgment [04941].
7 Of the increase [04766] of his government [04951] and peace [07965] there shall be no end [07093], upon the throne [03678] of David [01732], and upon his kingdom [04467], to order [03559] it, and to establish [05582] it with judgment [04941] and with justice [06666] from henceforth even for [05704] ever [05769]. The zeal [07068] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] will perform [06213] this.
2 He shall judge [01777] thy people [05971] with righteousness [06664], and thy poor [06041] with judgment [04941].
9 And [2532] be found [2147] in [1722] him [846], not [3361] having [2192] mine own [1699] righteousness [1343], which [3588] is of [1537] the law [3551], but [235] that which [3588] is through [1223] the faith [4102] of Christ [5547], the righteousness [1343] which [3588] is of [1537] God [2316] by [1909] faith [4102]:
19 To wit [5613], that [3754] God [2316] was [2258] in [1722] Christ [5547], reconciling [2644] the world [2889] unto himself [1438], not [3361] imputing [3049] their [846] trespasses [3900] unto them [846]; and [2532] hath committed [5087] unto [1722] us [2254] the word [3056] of reconciliation [2643].
20 Now then [3767] we are ambassadors [4243] for [5228] Christ [5547], as though [5613] God [2316] did beseech [3870] you by [1223] us [2257]: we pray [1189] you in [5228] Christ's [5547] stead [5228], be ye reconciled [2644] to God [2316].
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
3 For [1063] they being ignorant [50] of God's [2316] righteousness [1343], and [2532] going about [2212] to establish [2476] their own [2398] righteousness [1343], have [5293] not [3756] submitted themselves [5293] unto the righteousness [1343] of God [2316].
4 For [1063] Christ [5547] is the end [5056] of the law [3551] for [1519] righteousness [1343] to every one [3956] that believeth [4100].
30 But [1161] of [1537] him [846] are [2075] ye [5210] in [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424], who [3739] of [575] God [2316] is made [1096] unto us [2254] [5037] wisdom [4678], and righteousness [1343], and [2532] sanctification [38], and [2532] redemption [629]:
9 Rejoice [01523] greatly [03966], O daughter [01323] of Zion [06726]; shout [07321], O daughter [01323] of Jerusalem [03389]: behold, thy King [04428] cometh [0935] unto thee: he is just [06662], and having salvation [03467]; lowly [06041], and riding [07392] upon an ass [02543], and upon a colt [05895] the foal [01121] of an ass [0860].
24 Seventy [07657] weeks [07620] are determined [02852] upon thy people [05971] and upon thy holy [06944] city [05892], to finish [03607] the transgression [06588], and to make an end [08552] [02856] of sins [02403], and to make reconciliation [03722] for iniquity [05771], and to bring in [0935] everlasting [05769] righteousness [06664], and to seal up [02856] the vision [02377] and prophecy [05030], and to anoint [04886] the most [06944] Holy [06944].
11 He shall see [07200] of the travail [05999] of his soul [05315], and shall be satisfied [07646]: by his knowledge [01847] shall my righteous [06662] servant [05650] justify [06663] many [07227]; for he shall bear [05445] their iniquities [05771].
10 Yet it pleased [02654] the LORD [03068] to bruise [01792] him; he hath put him to grief [02470]: when thou shalt make [07760] his soul [05315] an offering for sin [0817], he shall see [07200] his seed [02233], he shall prolong [0748] his days [03117], and the pleasure [02656] of the LORD [03068] shall prosper [06743] in his hand [03027].
13 Behold, my servant [05650] shall deal prudently [07919], he shall be exalted [07311] and extolled [05375], and be very [03966] high [01361].
2 In that day [03117] shall the branch [06780] of the LORD [03068] be beautiful [06643] and glorious [03519], and the fruit [06529] of the earth [0776] shall be excellent [01347] and comely for [08597] them that are escaped [06413] of Israel [03478].
12 And speak [0559] unto him, saying [0559], Thus speaketh [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], saying [0559], Behold the man [0376] whose name [08034] is The BRANCH [06780]; and he shall grow up [06779] out of his place, and he shall build [01129] the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068]:
8 Hear [08085] now, O Joshua [03091] the high [01419] priest [03548], thou, and thy fellows [07453] that sit [03427] before [06440] thee: for they are men [0582] wondered at [04159]: for, behold, I will bring forth [0935] my servant [05650] the BRANCH [06780].
15 In those days [03117], and at that time [06256], will I cause the Branch [06780] of righteousness [06666] to grow up [06779] unto David [01732]; and he shall execute [06213] judgment [04941] and righteousness [06666] in the land [0776].
1 And there shall come forth [03318] a rod [02415] out of the stem [01503] of Jesse [03448], and a Branch [05342] shall grow [06509] out of his roots [08328]:
4 The LORD [03068] hath sworn [07650], and will not repent [05162], Thou art a priest [03548] for ever [05769] after the order [01700] of Melchizedek [04442].
18 I will raise them up [06965] a Prophet [05030] from among [07130] their brethren [0251], like unto thee, and will put [05414] my words [01697] in his mouth [06310]; and he shall speak [01696] unto them all that I shall command [06680] him.
3 And said [0559] unto me, Thou art my servant [05650], O Israel [03478], in whom I will be glorified [06286].
25 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; If my covenant [01285] be not with day [03119] and night [03915], and if I have not appointed [07760] the ordinances [02708] of heaven [08064] and earth [0776];
17 For thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; David [01732] shall never [03808] want [03772] a man [0376] to sit [03427] upon the throne [03678] of the house [01004] of Israel [03478];
2 In that day [03117] shall the branch [06780] of the LORD [03068] be beautiful [06643] and glorious [03519], and the fruit [06529] of the earth [0776] shall be excellent [01347] and comely for [08597] them that are escaped [06413] of Israel [03478].
2 In that day [03117] shall the branch [06780] of the LORD [03068] be beautiful [06643] and glorious [03519], and the fruit [06529] of the earth [0776] shall be excellent [01347] and comely for [08597] them that are escaped [06413] of Israel [03478].
2 For he shall grow up [05927] before [06440] him as a tender plant [03126], and as a root [08328] out of a dry [06723] ground [0776]: he hath no form [08389] nor comeliness [01926]; and when we shall see [07200] him, there is no beauty [04758] that we should desire [02530] him.
2 In that day [03117] shall the branch [06780] of the LORD [03068] be beautiful [06643] and glorious [03519], and the fruit [06529] of the earth [0776] shall be excellent [01347] and comely for [08597] them that are escaped [06413] of Israel [03478].
