Also--not only art thou polluted with idolatry, but also with the guilt of shedding innocent blood [MAURER]. ROSENMULLER not so well translates, "even in thy skirts," &c.; that is, there is no part of thee (not even thy skirts) that is not stained with innocent blood (Jer 19:4; Kg2 21:16; Psa 106:38). See as to innocent blood shed, not as here in honor of idols, but of prophets for having reproved them (Jer 2:30; Jer 26:20-23).

souls--that is, persons.

search--I did not need to "search deep" to find proof of thy guilt; for it was "upon all these" thy skirts. Not in deep caverns didst thou perpetrate these atrocities, but openly in the vale of Hinnom and within the precincts of the temple.

20 And there was also a man [0376] that prophesied [05012] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068], Urijah [0223] the son [01121] of Shemaiah [08098] of Kirjathjearim [07157], who prophesied [05012] against this city [05892] and against this land [0776] according to all the words [01697] of Jeremiah [03414]:
21 And when Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428], with all his mighty men [01368], and all the princes [08269], heard [08085] his words [01697], the king [04428] sought [01245] to put him to death [04191]: but when Urijah [0223] heard [08085] it, he was afraid [03372], and fled [01272], and went [0935] into Egypt [04714];
22 And Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428] sent [07971] men [0582] into Egypt [04714], namely, Elnathan [0494] the son [01121] of Achbor [05907], and certain men [0582] with him into Egypt [04714].
23 And they fetched forth [03318] Urijah [0223] out of Egypt [04714], and brought [0935] him unto Jehoiakim [03079] the king [04428]; who slew [05221] him with the sword [02719], and cast [07993] his dead body [05038] into the graves [06913] of the common [01121] people [05971].
30 In vain [07723] have I smitten [05221] your children [01121]; they received [03947] no correction [04148]: your own sword [02719] hath devoured [0398] your prophets [05030], like a destroying [07843] lion [0738].
38 And shed [08210] innocent [05355] blood [01818], even the blood [01818] of their sons [01121] and of their daughters [01323], whom they sacrificed [02076] unto the idols [06091] of Canaan [03667]: and the land [0776] was polluted [02610] with blood [01818].
16 Moreover Manasseh [04519] shed [08210] innocent [05355] blood [01818] very [03966] much [07235], till he had filled [04390] Jerusalem [03389] from one end [06310] to another [06310]; beside his sin [02403] wherewith he made Judah [03063] to sin [02398], in doing [06213] that which was evil [07451] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068].
4 Because they have forsaken [05800] me, and have estranged [05234] this place [04725], and have burned incense [06999] in it unto other [0312] gods [0430], whom neither they nor their fathers [01] have known [03045], nor the kings [04428] of Judah [03063], and have filled [04390] this place [04725] with the blood [01818] of innocents [05355];
2 If a thief [01590] be found [04672] breaking up [04290], and be smitten [05221] that he die [04191], there shall no blood [01818] be shed for him.
10 Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Behold, I am against the shepherds [07462]; and I will require [01875] my flock [06629] at their hand [03027], and cause them to cease [07673] from feeding [07462] the flock [06629]; neither shall the shepherds [07462] feed [07462] themselves any more; for I will deliver [05337] my flock [06629] from their mouth [06310], that they may not be meat [0402] for them.
