A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
sanctuary--inviolable asylum, like the altar of the temple (Kg1 1:50; Kg1 2:28; Eze 11:16; compare Pro 18:10); namely, to those who fear and trust in Him.

but . . . offence--that is, a rock over which they should fall to their hurt; namely those who would not believe.

both . . . houses--Israel and Judah. Here again the prophecy expands beyond the temporary application in Ahaz' time. The very stone, Immanuel, which would have been a sanctuary on belief, becomes a fatal stumbling-block through unbelief. Jesus Christ refers to this in Mat 21:44. (Compare Deu 32:4, Deu 32:15, Deu 32:18, Deu 32:30-31, Deu 32:37; Dan 2:34; Rom 9:33; Pe1 2:8).

gin--trap, in which birds are unexpectedly caught (Luk 21:35; Th1 5:2). So at the destruction of Jerusalem under Titus.

2 For [1063] yourselves [846] know [1492] perfectly [199] that [3754] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] so [3779] cometh [2064] as [5613] a thief [2812] in [1722] the night [3571].
35 For [1063] as [5613] a snare [3803] shall it come [1904] on [1909] all [3956] them that dwell [2521] on [1909] the face [4383] of the whole [3956] earth [1093].
8 And [2532] a stone [3037] of stumbling [4348], and [2532] a rock [4073] of offence [4625], even to them which [3739] stumble [4350] at the word [3056], being disobedient [544]: whereunto [1519] [3739] also [2532] they were appointed [5087].
33 As [2531] it is written [1125], Behold [2400], I lay [5087] in [1722] Sion [4622] a stumblingstone [3037] [4348] and [2532] rock [4073] of offence [4625]: and [2532] whosoever [3956] believeth [4100] on [1909] him [846] shall [2617] not [3756] be ashamed [2617].
34 Thou sawest [02370] [01934] till [05705] that a stone [069] was cut out [01505] without [03809] hands [03028], which smote [04223] the image [06755] upon [05922] his feet [07271] that were of iron [06523] and clay [02635], and brake [01855] them [01994] to pieces [01855].
37 And he shall say [0559], Where are their gods [0430], their rock [06697] in whom they trusted [02620],
30 How should one [0259] chase [07291] a thousand [0505], and two [08147] put ten [07233] thousand [0505] to flight [05127], except [03808] their Rock [06697] had sold [04376] them [03588], and the LORD [03068] had shut them up [05462]?
31 For their rock [06697] is not as our Rock [06697], even our enemies [0341] themselves being judges [06414].
18 Of the Rock [06697] that begat [03205] thee thou art unmindful [07876], and hast forgotten [07911] God [0410] that formed [02342] thee.
15 But Jeshurun [03484] waxed fat [08080], and kicked [01163]: thou art waxen fat [08080], thou art grown thick [05666], thou art covered [03780] with fatness; then he forsook [05203] God [0433] which made [06213] him, and lightly esteemed [05034] the Rock [06697] of his salvation [03444].
4 He is the Rock [06697], his work [06467] is perfect [08549]: for all his ways [01870] are judgment [04941]: a God [0410] of truth [0530] and without iniquity [05766], just [06662] and right [03477] is he.
44 And [2532] whosoever shall fall [4098] on [1909] this [5126] stone [3037] shall be broken [4917]: but [1161] on [1909] whomsoever [3739] [302] it shall fall [4098], it will grind [3039] him [846] to powder [3039].
10 The name [08034] of the LORD [03068] is a strong [05797] tower [04026]: the righteous [06662] runneth [07323] into it, and is safe [07682].
16 Therefore say [0559], Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Although I have cast them far off [07368] among the heathen [01471], and although I have scattered [06327] them among the countries [0776], yet will I be to them as a little [04592] sanctuary [04720] in the countries [0776] where they shall come [0935].
28 Then tidings [08052] came [0935] to Joab [03097]: for Joab [03097] had turned [05186] after [0310] Adonijah [0138], though he turned [05186] not after [0310] Absalom [053]. And Joab [03097] fled [05127] unto the tabernacle [0168] of the LORD [03068], and caught hold [02388] on the horns [07161] of the altar [04196].
50 And Adonijah [0138] feared [03372] because [06440] of Solomon [08010], and arose [06965], and went [03212], and caught hold [02388] on the horns [07161] of the altar [04196].
8 And [2532] a stone [3037] of stumbling [4348], and [2532] a rock [4073] of offence [4625], even to them which [3739] stumble [4350] at the word [3056], being disobedient [544]: whereunto [1519] [3739] also [2532] they were appointed [5087].
9 I will say [0559] unto God [0410] my rock [05553], Why hast thou forgotten [07911] me? why go [03212] I mourning [06937] because of the oppression [03906] of the enemy [0341]?
2 The LORD [03068] will preserve [08104] him, and keep him alive [02421]; and he shall be blessed [0833] upon the earth [0776]: and thou wilt not deliver [05414] him unto the will [05315] of his enemies [0341].
8 And hast not shut me up [05462] into the hand [03027] of the enemy [0341]: thou hast set [05975] my feet [07272] in a large room [04800].
2 Bow down [05186] thine ear [0241] to me; deliver [05337] me speedily [04120]: be thou my strong [04581] rock [06697], for an house [01004] of defence [04686] to save [03467] me.
1 A Psalm of David [01732]. Unto thee will I cry [07121], O LORD [03068] my rock [06697]; be not silent [02814] to me: lest, if thou be silent [02790] to me, I become [04911] like them that go down [03381] into the pit [0953].
14 Let the words [0561] of my mouth [06310], and the meditation [01902] of my heart [03820], be acceptable [07522] in thy sight [06440], O LORD [03068], my strength [06697], and my redeemer [01350].
10 The name [08034] of the LORD [03068] is a strong [05797] tower [04026]: the righteous [06662] runneth [07323] into it, and is safe [07682].
1 To the chief Musician [05329] for the sons [01121] of Korah [07141], A Song [07892] upon Alamoth [05961]. God [0430] is our refuge [04268] and strength [05797], a very [03966] present [04672] help [05833] in trouble [06869].
51 We are confounded [0954], because we have heard [08085] reproach [02781]: shame [03639] hath covered [03680] our faces [06440]: for strangers [02114] are come [0935] into the sanctuaries [04720] of the LORD'S [03068] house [01004].
12 Neither shall he go out [03318] of the sanctuary [04720], nor profane [02490] the sanctuary [04720] of his God [0430]; for the crown [05145] of the anointing [04888] oil [08081] of his God [0430] is upon him: I am the LORD [03068].
4 And she shall then continue [03427] in the blood [01818] of her purifying [02893] three [07969] and thirty [07970] days [03117]; she shall touch [05060] no hallowed [06944] thing, nor come [0935] into the sanctuary [04720], until the days [03117] [03117] of her purifying [02892] be fulfilled [04390].
8 And let them make [06213] me a sanctuary [04720]; that I may dwell [07931] among [08432] them.
