Verse         Translation Text
Isa 5:24 Strong Concordance Therefore as the fire [0784] devoureth [0398] the stubble [07179], and the flame [03956] [03852] consumeth [07503] the chaff [02842], so their root [08328] shall be as rottenness [04716], and their blossom [06525] shall go up [05927] as dust [080]: because they have cast away [03988] the law [08451] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], and despised [05006] the word [0565] of the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478].
King James Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Literally, "tongue of fire eateth" (Act 2:3).

flame consumeth the chaff--rather, withered grass falleth before the flame (Mat 3:12).

root . . . blossom--entire decay, both the hidden source and outward manifestations of prosperity, perishing (Job 18:16; Mal 4:1).

cast away . . . law--in its spirit, while retaining the letter.

16 His roots [08328] shall be dried up [03001] beneath, and above [04605] shall his branch [07105] be cut off [05243].
12 Whose [3739] fan [4425] is in [1722] his [846] hand [5495], and [2532] he will throughly purge [1245] his [846] floor [257], and [2532] gather [4863] his [846] wheat [4621] into [1519] the garner [596]; but [1161] he will burn up [2618] the chaff [892] with unquenchable [762] fire [4442].
3 And [2532] there appeared [3700] unto them [846] cloven [1266] tongues [1100] like as [5616] of fire [4442], and [5037] it sat [2523] upon [1909] each [1538] [1520] of them [846].

16 Ephraim [0669] is smitten [05221], their root [08328] is dried up [03001], they shall bear [06213] no fruit [06529]: yea, though they bring forth [03205], yet will I slay [04191] even the beloved [04261] fruit of their womb [0990].
30 And the firstborn [01060] of the poor [01800] shall feed [07462], and the needy [034] shall lie down [07257] in safety [0983]: and I will kill [04191] thy root [08328] with famine [07458], and he shall slay [02026] thy remnant [07611].
3 And [2532] there appeared [3700] unto them [846] cloven [1266] tongues [1100] like as [5616] of fire [4442], and [5037] it sat [2523] upon [1909] each [1538] [1520] of them [846].

1 Oh [03863] that thou wouldest rend [07167] the heavens [08064], that thou wouldest come down [03381], that the mountains [02022] might flow down [02151] at thy presence [06440],

22 Woe [01945] unto them that are mighty [01368] to drink [08354] wine [03196], and men [0582] of strength [02428] to mingle [04537] strong drink [07941]:
24 Therefore as the fire [0784] devoureth [0398] the stubble [07179], and the flame [03956] [03852] consumeth [07503] the chaff [02842], so their root [08328] shall be as rottenness [04716], and their blossom [06525] shall go up [05927] as dust [080]: because they have cast away [03988] the law [08451] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], and despised [05006] the word [0565] of the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478].
14 Therefore hell [07585] hath enlarged [07337] herself [05315], and opened [06473] her mouth [06310] without measure [02706]: and their glory [01926], and their multitude [01995], and their pomp [07588], and he that rejoiceth [05938], shall descend [03381] into it.
13 Therefore my people [05971] are gone into captivity [01540], because they have no knowledge [01847]: and their honourable [03519] men [04962] are famished [07458], and their multitude [01995] dried up [06704] with thirst [06772].
18 Woe [01945] unto them that draw [04900] iniquity [05771] with cords [02256] of vanity [07723], and sin [02403] as it were with a cart [05699] rope [05688]:

20 Woe [01945] unto them that call [0559] evil [07451] good [02896], and good [02896] evil [07451]; that put [07760] darkness [02822] for light [0216], and light [0216] for darkness [02822]; that put [07760] bitter [04751] for sweet [04966], and sweet [04966] for bitter [04751]!
21 Woe [01945] unto them that are wise [02450] in their own eyes [05869], and prudent [0995] in their own sight [06440]!
38 Then the fire [0784] of the LORD [03068] fell [05307], and consumed [0398] the burnt sacrifice [05930], and the wood [06086], and the stones [068], and the dust [06083], and licked up [03897] the water [04325] that was in the trench [08585].
4 And Moab [04124] said [0559] unto the elders [02205] of Midian [04080], Now shall this company [06951] lick up [03897] all that are round about [05439] us, as the ox [07794] licketh up [03897] the grass [03418] of the field [07704]. And Balak [01111] the son [01121] of Zippor [06834] was king [04428] of the Moabites [04124] at that time [06256].
3 And [2532] there appeared [3700] unto them [846] cloven [1266] tongues [1100] like as [5616] of fire [4442], and [5037] it sat [2523] upon [1909] each [1538] [1520] of them [846].
