they--the "princes and judges" (Isa 40:23) who oppose God's purposes and God's people. Often compared to tall trees (Psa 37:35; Dan 4:10).

not . . . sown--the seed, that is, race shall become extinct (Nah 1:14).

stock--not even shall any shoots spring up from the stump when the tree has been cut down: no descendants whatever (Job 14:7; see on Isa 11:1).

and . . . also--so the Septuagint. But MAURER translates, "They are hardly (literally, 'not yet', as in Kg2 20:4) planted (&c.) when He (God) blows upon them."

blow--The image is from the hot east wind (simoon) that "withers" vegetation.

whirlwind . . . stubble-- (Psa 83:13), where, "like a wheel," refers to the rotatory action of the whirlwind on the stubble.

13 O my God [0430], make [07896] them like a wheel [01534]; as the stubble [07179] before [06440] the wind [07307].
4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah [03470] was gone out [03318] into the middle [08484] court [02691] [05892], that the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came to him, saying [0559],
1 And there shall come forth [03318] a rod [02415] out of the stem [01503] of Jesse [03448], and a Branch [05342] shall grow [06509] out of his roots [08328]:
7 For there is [03426] hope [08615] of a tree [06086], if it be cut down [03772], that it will sprout again [02498], and that the tender branch [03127] thereof will not cease [02308].
14 And the LORD [03068] hath given a commandment [06680] concerning thee, that no more of thy name [08034] be sown [02232]: out of the house [01004] of thy gods [0430] will I cut off [03772] the graven image [06459] and the molten image [04541]: I will make [07760] thy grave [06913]; for thou art vile [07043].
10 Thus were the visions [02376] of mine head [07217] in [05922] my bed [04903]; I saw [01934] [02370], and behold [0431] a tree [0363] in the midst [01459] of the earth [0772], and the height [07314] thereof was great [07690].
35 I have seen [07200] the wicked [07563] in great power [06184], and spreading [06168] himself like a green [07488] bay tree [0249].
23 That bringeth [05414] the princes [07336] to nothing; he maketh [06213] the judges [08199] of the earth [0776] as vanity [08414].
13 O my God [0430], make [07896] them like a wheel [01534]; as the stubble [07179] before [06440] the wind [07307].
26 Hast thou not heard [08085] long ago [07350], how I have done [06213] it; and of ancient [06924] times [03117], that I have formed [03335] it? now have I brought [0935] it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste [07582] defenced [01219] cities [05892] into ruinous [05327] heaps [01530].
1 And there shall come forth [03318] a rod [02415] out of the stem [01503] of Jesse [03448], and a Branch [05342] shall grow [06509] out of his roots [08328]:
14 And the LORD [03068] hath given a commandment [06680] concerning thee, that no more of thy name [08034] be sown [02232]: out of the house [01004] of thy gods [0430] will I cut off [03772] the graven image [06459] and the molten image [04541]: I will make [07760] thy grave [06913]; for thou art vile [07043].
7 Then [0116] came [05954] in the magicians [02749], the astrologers [0826], the Chaldeans [03779], and the soothsayers [01505]: and I [0576] told [0560] the dream [02493] before [06925] them; but they did not [03809] make known [03046] unto me the interpretation [06591] thereof.
35 I have seen [07200] the wicked [07563] in great power [06184], and spreading [06168] himself like a green [07488] bay tree [0249].
