cruel--not strictly, but unsparingly just; opposed to mercy. Also answering to the cruelty (in the strict sense) of Babylon towards others (Isa 14:17) now about to be visited on itself.
the land--"the earth" [HORSLEY]. The language of Isa 13:9-13 can only primarily and partially apply to Babylon; fully and exhaustively, the judgments to come, hereafter, on the whole earth. Compare Isa 13:10 with Mat 24:29; Rev 8:12. The sins of Babylon, arrogancy (Isa 13:11; Isa 14:11; Isa 47:7-8), cruelty, false worship (Jer 50:38), persecution of the people of God (Isa 47:6), are peculiarly characteristic of the Antichristian world of the latter days (Dan 11:32-37; Rev 17:3, Rev 17:6; Rev 18:6-7, Rev 18:9-14, Rev 18:24). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The day of the Lord cometh - See Isa 13:6.
Cruel - (אכזרי 'akezārı̂y). This does not mean that "God" is cruel, but that the 'day of Yahweh' that was coming should be unsparing and destructive to them. It would be the exhibition of "justice," but not of "cruelty;" and the word stands opposed here to mercy, and means that God would not spare them. The effect would be that the inhabitants of Babylon would be destroyed.
Fierce anger - Hebrew, (חרון אף 'aph chărôn) 'A glow, or burning of anger.' The phrase denotes the most intense indignation (compare Num 25:4; Num 32:14; Sa1 28:18).
To lay the land desolate - Chaldea, Isa 13:5. |

Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The day of Jehovah's wrath is coming - a starless night - a nightlike, sunless day. "Behold, the day of Jehovah cometh, a cruel one, and wrath and fierce anger, to turn the earth into a wilderness: and its sinners He destroys out of it. For the stars of heaven, and its Orions, will not let their light shine: the sun darkens itself at its rising, and the moon does not let its light shine." The day of Jehovah cometh as one cruelly severe ('aczâri, an adj. rel. from 'aczâr, chosh, kosh, to be dry, hard, unfelling), as purely an overflowing of inward excitement, and as burning anger; lâsūm is carried on by the finite verb, according to a well-known alteration of style (= ūlehashmı̄d). It is not indeed the general judgment which the prophet is depicting here, but a certain historical catastrophe falling upon the nations, which draws the whole world into sympathetic suffering. 'Eretz, therefore (inasmuch as the notions of land generally, and some particular land or portion of the earth, are blended together - a very elastic term, with vanishing boundaries), is not merely the land of Babylon here, as Knobel supposes, but the earth. Verse 10 shows in what way the day of Jehovah is a day of wrath. Even nature clothes itself in the colour of wrath, which is the very opposite to light. The heavenly lights above the earth go out; the moon does not shine; and the sun, which is about to rise, alters its mind. "The Orions" are Orion itself and other constellations like it, just as the morning stars in Job 38:7 are Hesperus and other similar stars. It is more probable that the term cesiil is used for Orion in the sense of "the fool" (= foolhardy),
(Note: When R. Samuel of Nehardea, the astronomer, says in his b. Berachoth 58b, "If it were not for the heat of the cesil, the world would perish from the cold of the Scorpion, and vice versa," - he means by the cesil Orion; and the true meaning of the passage is, that the constellations of Orion and the Scorpion, one of which appears in the hot season, and the other in the cold, preserve the temperature in equilibrium.)
according to the older translators (lxx ὁ ̓Ωρίων, Targum nephilehon from nephila', Syr. gaboro, Arab. gebbâr, the giant), than that it refers to Suhêl, i.e., Canopus (see the notes on Job 9:9; Job 38:31), although the Arabic suhêl does occur as a generic name for stars of surpassing splendour (see at Job 38:7). The comprehensive term employed is similar to the figure of speech met with in Arabic (called taglı̄b, i.e., the preponderance of the pars potior), in such expressions as "the two late evenings" for the evening and late evening, "the two Omars" for Omar and Abubekr, though the resemblance is still greater to the Latin Scipiones, i.e., men of Scipio's greatness. Even the Orions, i.e., those stars which are at other times the most conspicuous, withhold their light; for when God is angry, the principle of anger is set in motion even in the natural world, and primarily in the stars that were created "for signs (compare Gen 1:14 with Jer 10:2). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Behold - Divers words are heaped together, to signify the extremity of his anger. |
24 And [2532] in [1722] her [846] was found [2147] the blood [129] of prophets [4396], and [2532] of saints [40], and [2532] of all [3956] that were slain [4969] upon [1909] the earth [1093].
9 And [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], who [3588] have committed fornication [4203] and [2532] lived deliciously [4763] with [3326] her [846], shall bewail [2799] her [846], and [2532] lament [2875] for [1909] her [846], when [3752] they shall see [991] the smoke [2586] of her [846] burning [4451],
10 Standing [2476] afar [3113] off [575] for [1223] the fear [5401] of her [846] torment [929], saying [3004], Alas [3759], alas [3759], that great [3173] city [4172] Babylon [897], that mighty [2478] city [4172]! for [3754] in [1722] one [3391] hour [5610] is [2064] thy [4675] judgment [2920] come [2064].
11 And [2532] the merchants [1713] of the earth [1093] shall weep [2799] and [2532] mourn [3996] over [1909] her [846]; for [3754] no man [3762] buyeth [59] their [846] merchandise [1117] any more [3765]:
12 The merchandise [1117] of gold [5557], and [2532] silver [696], and [2532] precious [5093] stones [3037], and [2532] of pearls [3135], and [2532] fine linen [1040], and [2532] purple [4209], and [2532] silk [4596], and [2532] scarlet [2847], and [2532] all [3956] thyine [2367] wood [3586], and [2532] all manner [3956] vessels [4632] of ivory [1661], and [2532] all manner [3956] vessels [4632] of [1537] most precious [5093] wood [3586], and [2532] of brass [5475], and [2532] iron [4604], and [2532] marble [3139],
13 And [2532] cinnamon [2792], and [2532] odours [2368], and [2532] ointments [3464], and [2532] frankincense [3030], and [2532] wine [3631], and [2532] oil [1637], and [2532] fine flour [4585], and [2532] wheat [4621], and [2532] beasts [2934], and [2532] sheep [4263], and [2532] horses [2462], and [2532] chariots [4480], and [2532] slaves [4983], and [2532] souls [5590] of men [444].
14 And [2532] the fruits [3703] that thy [4675] soul [5590] lusted after [1939] are departed [565] from [575] thee [4675], and [2532] all things [3956] which [3588] were dainty [3045] and [2532] goodly [2986] are departed [565] from [575] thee [4675], and [2532] thou shalt find [2147] them [846] no more [3765] at all [3364].
6 Reward [591] her [846] even [2532] as [5613] she [846] [3778] rewarded [591] you [5213], and [2532] double [1363] unto her [846] double [1362] according to [2596] her [846] works [2041]: in [1722] the cup [4221] which [3739] she hath filled [2767] fill [2767] to her [846] double [1362].
7 How much [3745] she hath glorified [1392] herself [1438], and [2532] lived deliciously [4763], so much [5118] torment [929] and [2532] sorrow [3997] give [1325] her [846]: for [3754] she saith [3004] in [1722] her [846] heart [2588], I sit [2521] a queen [938], and [2532] am [1510] no [3756] widow [5503], and [2532] shall see [1492] no [3364] sorrow [3997].
6 And [2532] I saw [1492] the woman [1135] drunken [3184] with [1537] the blood [129] of the saints [40], and [2532] with [1537] the blood [129] of the martyrs [3144] of Jesus [2424]: and [2532] when I saw [1492] her [846], I wondered [2296] with great [3173] admiration [2295].
3 So [2532] he carried [667] me [3165] away [667] in [1722] the spirit [4151] into [1519] the wilderness [2048]: and [2532] I saw [1492] a woman [1135] sit [2521] upon [1909] a scarlet coloured [2847] beast [2342], full of [1073] names [3686] of blasphemy [988], having [2192] seven [2033] heads [2776] and [2532] ten [1176] horns [2768].
32 And such as do wickedly [07561] against the covenant [01285] shall he corrupt [02610] by flatteries [02514]: but the people [05971] that do know [03045] their God [0430] shall be strong [02388], and do [06213] exploits.
33 And they that understand [07919] among the people [05971] shall instruct [0995] many [07227]: yet they shall fall [03782] by the sword [02719], and by flame [03852], by captivity [07628], and by spoil [0961], many days [03117].
34 Now when they shall fall [03782], they shall be holpen [05826] with a little [04592] help [05828]: but many [07227] shall cleave [03867] to them with flatteries [02519].
35 And some of them of understanding [07919] shall fall [03782], to try [06884] them, and to purge [01305], and to make them white [03835], even to the time [06256] of the end [07093]: because it is yet for a time appointed [04150].
36 And the king [04428] shall do [06213] according to his will [07522]; and he shall exalt [07311] himself, and magnify [01431] himself above every god [0410], and shall speak [01696] marvellous things [06381] against the God [0410] of gods [0410], and shall prosper [06743] till the indignation [02195] be accomplished [03615]: for that that is determined [02782] shall be done [06213].
37 Neither shall he regard [0995] the God [0430] of his fathers [01], nor the desire [02532] of women [0802], nor regard [0995] any god [0433]: for he shall magnify [01431] himself above all.
6 I was wroth [07107] with my people [05971], I have polluted [02490] mine inheritance [05159], and given [05414] them into thine hand [03027]: thou didst shew [07760] them no mercy [07356]; upon the ancient [02205] hast thou very [03966] heavily [03513] laid thy yoke [05923].
38 A drought [02721] is upon her waters [04325]; and they shall be dried up [03001]: for it is the land [0776] of graven images [06456], and they are mad [01984] upon their idols [0367].
7 And thou saidst [0559], I shall be a lady [01404] for ever [05769]: so that thou didst not lay [07760] these things to thy heart [03820], neither didst remember [02142] the latter end [0319] of it.
8 Therefore hear [08085] now this, thou that art given to pleasures [05719], that dwellest [03427] carelessly [0983], that sayest [0559] in thine heart [03824], I am, and none else [0657] beside me; I shall not sit [03427] as a widow [0490], neither shall I know [03045] the loss of children [07908]:
11 Thy pomp [01347] is brought down [03381] to the grave [07585], and the noise [01998] of thy viols [05035]: the worm [07415] is spread [03331] under thee, and the worms [08438] cover [04374] thee.
11 And I will punish [06485] the world [08398] for their evil [07451], and the wicked [07563] for their iniquity [05771]; and I will cause the arrogancy [01347] of the proud [02086] to cease [07673], and will lay low [08213] the haughtiness [01346] of the terrible [06184].
12 And [2532] the fourth [5067] angel [32] sounded [4537], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the sun [2246] was smitten [4141], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the moon [4582], and [2532] the third part [5154] of the stars [792]; so as [2443] the third part [5154] of them [846] was darkened [4654], and [2532] the day [2250] shone [5316] not [3361] for a third part [5154] of it [846], and [2532] the night [3571] likewise [3668].
29 Immediately [1161] [2112] after [3326] the tribulation [2347] of those [1565] days [2250] shall the sun [2246] be darkened [4654], and [2532] the moon [4582] shall [1325] not [3756] give [1325] her [846] light [5338], and [2532] the stars [792] shall fall [4098] from [575] heaven [3772], and [2532] the powers [1411] of the heavens [3772] shall be shaken [4531]:
10 For the stars [03556] of heaven [08064] and the constellations [03685] thereof shall not give [01984] their light [0216]: the sun [08121] shall be darkened [02821] in his going forth [03318], and the moon [03394] shall not cause her light [0216] to shine [05050].
9 Behold, the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] cometh [0935], cruel [0394] both with wrath [05678] and fierce [02740] anger [0639], to lay [07760] the land [0776] desolate [08047]: and he shall destroy [08045] the sinners [02400] thereof out of it.
10 For the stars [03556] of heaven [08064] and the constellations [03685] thereof shall not give [01984] their light [0216]: the sun [08121] shall be darkened [02821] in his going forth [03318], and the moon [03394] shall not cause her light [0216] to shine [05050].
12 I will make a man [0582] more precious [03365] than fine gold [06337]; even a man [0120] than the golden wedge [03800] of Ophir [0211].
13 Therefore I will shake [07264] the heavens [08064], and the earth [0776] shall remove [07493] out of her place [04725], in the wrath [05678] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], and in the day [03117] of his fierce [02740] anger [0639].
17 That made [07760] the world [08398] as a wilderness [04057], and destroyed [02040] the cities [05892] thereof; that opened [06605] not the house [01004] of his prisoners [0615]?
5 They come [0935] from a far [04801] country [0776], from the end [07097] of heaven [08064], even the LORD [03068], and the weapons [03627] of his indignation [02195], to destroy [02254] the whole land [0776].
18 Because [0834] thou obeyedst [08085] not the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068], nor executedst [06213] his fierce [02740] wrath [0639] upon Amalek [06002], therefore hath the LORD [03068] done [06213] this thing [01697] unto thee this day [03117].
14 And, behold, ye are risen up [06965] in your fathers [01]' stead, an increase [08635] of sinful [02400] men [0582], to augment [05595] yet the fierce [02740] anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] toward Israel [03478].
4 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Take [03947] all the heads [07218] of the people [05971], and hang them up [03363] before [05048] the LORD [03068] against the sun [08121], that the fierce [02740] anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] may be turned away [07725] from Israel [03478].
6 Howl [03213] ye; for the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] is at hand [07138]; it shall come [0935] as a destruction [07701] from the Almighty [07706].
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] heaven [3772] opened [455], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] horse [2462]; and [2532] he that sat [2521] upon [1909] him [846] was called [2564] Faithful [4103] and [2532] True [228], and [2532] in [1722] righteousness [1343] he doth judge [2919] and [2532] make war [4170].
12 [1161] His [846] eyes [3788] were as [5613] a flame [5395] of fire [4442], and [2532] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] were many [4183] crowns [1238]; and he had [2192] a name [3686] written [1125], that [3739] no man [3762] knew [1492], but [1508] he himself [846].
13 And [2532] he was clothed [4016] with a vesture [2440] dipped [911] in blood [129]: and [2532] his [846] name [3686] is called [2564] The Word [3056] of God [2316].
14 And [2532] the armies [4753] which were [3588] in [1722] heaven [3772] followed [190] him [846] upon [1909] white [3022] horses [2462], clothed [1746] in fine linen [1039], white [3022] and [2532] clean [2513].
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
15 For, behold, the LORD [03068] will come [0935] with fire [0784], and with his chariots [04818] like a whirlwind [05492], to render [07725] his anger [0639] with fury [02534], and his rebuke [01606] with flames [03851] of fire [0784].
16 For by fire [0784] and by his sword [02719] will the LORD [03068] plead [08199] with all flesh [01320]: and the slain [02491] of the LORD [03068] shall be many [07231].
17 They that sanctify [06942] themselves, and purify [02891] themselves in the gardens [01593] behind [0310] one [0259] tree in the midst [08432], eating [0398] swine's [02386] flesh [01320], and the abomination [08263], and the mouse [05909], shall be consumed [05486] together [03162], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
18 For I know their works [04639] and their thoughts [04284]: it shall come [0935], that I will gather [06908] all nations [01471] and tongues [03956]; and they shall come [0935], and see [07200] my glory [03519].
19 And I will set [07760] a sign [0226] among them, and I will send [07971] those that escape [06412] of them unto the nations [01471], to Tarshish [08659], Pul [06322], and Lud [03865], that draw [04900] the bow [07198], to Tubal [08422], and Javan [03120], to the isles [0339] afar off [07350], that have not heard [08085] my fame [08088], neither have seen [07200] my glory [03519]; and they shall declare [05046] my glory [03519] among the Gentiles [01471].
20 And they shall bring [0935] all your brethren [0251] for an offering [04503] unto the LORD [03068] out of all nations [01471] upon horses [05483], and in chariots [07393], and in litters [06632], and upon mules [06505], and upon swift beasts [03753], to my holy [06944] mountain [02022] Jerusalem [03389], saith [0559] the LORD [03068], as the children [01121] of Israel [03478] bring [0935] an offering [04503] in a clean [02889] vessel [03627] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
21 And I will also take [03947] of them for priests [03548] and for Levites [03881], saith [0559] the LORD [03068].
22 For as the new [02319] heavens [08064] and the new [02319] earth [0776], which I will make [06213], shall remain [05975] before [06440] me, saith [05002] the LORD [03068], so shall your seed [02233] and your name [08034] remain [05975].
23 And it shall come to pass, that from [01767] one new moon [02320] to another [02320], and from [01767] one sabbath [07676] to another [07676], shall all flesh [01320] come [0935] to worship [07812] before [06440] me, saith [0559] the LORD [03068].
24 And they shall go forth [03318], and look [07200] upon the carcases [06297] of the men [0582] that have transgressed [06586] against me: for their worm [08438] shall not die [04191], neither shall their fire [0784] be quenched [03518]; and they shall be an abhorring [01860] unto all flesh [01320].
1 Who is this that cometh [0935] from Edom [0123], with dyed [02556] garments [0899] from Bozrah [01224]? this that is glorious [01921] in his apparel [03830], travelling [06808] in the greatness [07230] of his strength [03581]? I that speak [01696] in righteousness [06666], mighty [07227] to save [03467].
2 Wherefore art thou red [0122] in thine apparel [03830], and thy garments [0899] like him that treadeth [01869] in the winefat [01660]?
3 I have trodden [01869] the winepress [06333] alone; and of the people [05971] there was none [0376] with me: for I will tread [01869] them in mine anger [0639], and trample [07429] them in my fury [02534]; and their blood [05332] shall be sprinkled [05137] upon my garments [0899], and I will stain [01351] all my raiment [04403].
4 For the day [03117] of vengeance [05359] is in mine heart [03820], and the year [08141] of my redeemed [01350] is come [0935].
5 And I looked [05027], and there was none to help [05826]; and I wondered [08074] that there was none to uphold [05564]: therefore mine own arm [02220] brought salvation [03467] unto me; and my fury [02534], it upheld [05564] me.
6 And I will tread down [0947] the people [05971] in mine anger [0639], and make them drunk [07937] in my fury [02534], and I will bring down [03381] their strength [05332] to the earth [0776].
21 For, behold, the LORD [03068] cometh out [03318] of his place [04725] to punish [06485] the inhabitants [03427] of the earth [0776] for their iniquity [05771]: the earth [0776] also shall disclose [01540] her blood [01818], and shall no more cover [03680] her slain [02026].
20 Come [03212], my people [05971], enter [0935] thou into thy chambers [02315], and shut [05462] thy doors [01817] about thee: hide [02247] thyself as it were for a little [04592] moment [07281], until the indignation [02195] be overpast [05674].
21 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the LORD [03068] shall punish [06485] the host [06635] of the high ones [04791] that are on high [04791], and the kings [04428] of the earth [0127] upon the earth [0127].
22 And they shall be gathered together [0622], as prisoners [0616] are gathered [0626] in the pit [0953], and shall be shut up [05462] in the prison [04525], and after many [07230] days [03117] shall they be visited [06485].
23 Then the moon [03842] shall be confounded [02659], and the sun [02535] ashamed [0954], when the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall reign [04427] in mount [02022] Zion [06726], and in Jerusalem [03389], and before his ancients [02205] gloriously [03519].
14 And it shall be as the chased [05080] roe [06643], and as a sheep [06629] that no man taketh up [06908]: they shall every man [0376] turn [06437] to his own people [05971], and flee [05127] every one [0376] into his own land [0776].
15 Every one that is found [04672] shall be thrust through [01856]; and every one that is joined [05595] unto them shall fall [05307] by the sword [02719].
16 Their children [05768] also shall be dashed to pieces [07376] before their eyes [05869]; their houses [01004] shall be spoiled [08155], and their wives [0802] ravished [07901] [07693].
10 And in that day [03117] there shall be a root [08328] of Jesse [03448], which shall stand [05975] for an ensign [05251] of the people [05971]; to it shall the Gentiles [01471] seek [01875]: and his rest [04496] shall be glorious [03519].
11 And it shall come to pass in that day [03117], that the Lord [0136] shall set [03254] his hand [03027] again [03254] the second time [08145] to recover [07069] the remnant [07605] of his people [05971], which shall be left [07604], from Assyria [0804], and from Egypt [04714], and from Pathros [06624], and from Cush [03568], and from Elam [05867], and from Shinar [08152], and from Hamath [02574], and from the islands [0339] of the sea [03220].
12 And he shall set up [05375] an ensign [05251] for the nations [01471], and shall assemble [0622] the outcasts [01760] of Israel [03478], and gather together [06908] the dispersed [05310] of Judah [03063] from the four [0702] corners [03671] of the earth [0776].
13 The envy [07068] also of Ephraim [0669] shall depart [05493], and the adversaries [06887] of Judah [03063] shall be cut off [03772]: Ephraim [0669] shall not envy [07065] Judah [03063], and Judah [03063] shall not vex [06887] Ephraim [0669].
1 And in that day [03117] seven [07651] women [0802] shall take hold [02388] of one [0259] man [0376], saying [0559], We will eat [0398] our own bread [03899], and wear [03847] our own apparel [08071]: only let us be called [07121] by thy name [08034], to take away [0622] our reproach [02781].
2 In that day [03117] shall the branch [06780] of the LORD [03068] be beautiful [06643] and glorious [03519], and the fruit [06529] of the earth [0776] shall be excellent [01347] and comely for [08597] them that are escaped [06413] of Israel [03478].
3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left [07604] in Zion [06726], and he that remaineth [03498] in Jerusalem [03389], shall be called [0559] holy [06918], even every one that is written [03789] among the living [02416] in Jerusalem [03389]:
4 When the Lord [0136] shall have washed away [07364] the filth [06675] of the daughters [01323] of Zion [06726], and shall have purged [01740] the blood [01818] of Jerusalem [03389] from the midst [07130] thereof by the spirit [07307] of judgment [04941], and by the spirit [07307] of burning [01197].
5 And the LORD [03068] will create [01254] upon every dwelling place [04349] of mount [02022] Zion [06726], and upon her assemblies [04744], a cloud [06051] and smoke [06227] by day [03119], and the shining [05051] of a flaming [03852] fire [0784] by night [03915]: for upon all the glory [03519] shall be a defence [02646].
6 And there shall be a tabernacle [05521] for a shadow [06738] in the daytime [03119] from the heat [02721], and for a place of refuge [04268], and for a covert [04563] from storm [02230] and from rain [04306].
10 Enter [0935] into the rock [06697], and hide [02934] thee in the dust [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347].
11 The lofty [01365] looks [05869] of man [0120] shall be humbled [08213], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be bowed down [07817], and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
12 For the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall be upon every one that is proud [01343] and lofty [07311], and upon every one that is lifted up [05375]; and he shall be brought low [08213]:
13 And upon all the cedars [0730] of Lebanon [03844], that are high [07311] and lifted up [05375], and upon all the oaks [0437] of Bashan [01316],
14 And upon all the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon all the hills [01389] that are lifted up [05375],
15 And upon every high [01364] tower [04026], and upon every fenced [01219] wall [02346],
16 And upon all the ships [0591] of Tarshish [08659], and upon all pleasant [02532] pictures [07914].
17 And the loftiness [01365] of man [0120] shall be bowed down [07817], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be made low [08213]: and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
18 And the idols [0457] he shall utterly [03632] abolish [02498].
19 And they shall go [0935] into the holes [04631] of the rocks [06697], and into the caves [04247] of the earth [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
20 In that day [03117] a man [0120] shall cast [07993] his idols [0457] of silver [03701], and his idols [0457] of gold [02091], which they made each one for himself [06213] to worship [07812], to the moles [02661] [06512] and to the bats [05847];
21 To go [0935] into the clefts [05366] of the rocks [06697], and into the tops [05585] of the ragged rocks [05553], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
22 Cease [02308] ye from man [0120], whose breath [05397] is in his nostrils [0639]: for wherein is he to be accounted of [02803]?
2 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Learn [03925] not the way [01870] of the heathen [01471], and be not dismayed [02865] at the signs [0226] of heaven [08064]; for the heathen [01471] are dismayed [02865] at them [01992].
14 And God [0430] said [0559], Let there be lights [03974] in the firmament [07549] of the heaven [08064] to divide [0914] the day [03117] from the night [03915]; and let them be for signs [0226], and for seasons [04150], and for days [03117], and years [08141]:
7 When the morning [01242] stars [03556] sang [07442] together [03162], and all the sons [01121] of God [0430] shouted [07321] for joy?
31 Canst thou bind [07194] the sweet influences [04575] of Pleiades [03598], or loose [06605] the bands [04189] of Orion [03685]?
9 Which maketh [06213] Arcturus [05906], Orion [03685], and Pleiades [03598], and the chambers [02315] of the south [08486].
7 When the morning [01242] stars [03556] sang [07442] together [03162], and all the sons [01121] of God [0430] shouted [07321] for joy?
