A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
For--Be not afraid (Isa 10:24), for, &c.
indignation . . . cease--The punishments of God against Israel shall be consummated and ended (Isa 26:20; Dan 11:36). "Till the indignation be accomplished," &c.
mine anger--shall turn to their (the Assyrians') destruction. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
For yet a very little while - This is designed to console them with the hope of deliverance. The threatened invasion was brief and was soon ended by the pestilence that swept off the greater part of the army of the Assyrian.
The indignation shall cease - The anger of God against his offending people shall come to an end; his purposes of chastisement shall be completed; and the land shall be delivered.
In their destruction - על־תבליתם ‛al-tabelı̂ytām from בלה bâlâh, to wear out; to consume; to be annihilated. It means here, that his anger would terminate in the entire annihilation of their power to injure them. Such was the complete overthrow of Sennacherib by the pestilence; Kg2 19:35. The word used here, occurs in this form in no other place in the Hebrew Bible, though the verb is used, and other forms of the noun. "The verb," Deu 7:4; Deu 29:5; Jos 9:13; Neh 9:21, ..."Nouns," Eze 23:43; Isa 38:17; Jer 38:11-12; Isa 17:14, et al. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
A still further reason is given for the elevating words, with a resumption of the grounds of consolation upon which they were founded. "For yet a very little the indignation is past, and my wrath turns to destroy them: and Jehovah of hosts moves the whip over it, as He smote Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His staff stretches out over the sea, and He lifts it up in the manner of Egypt." The expression "a very little" (as in Isa 16:14; Isa 29:17) does not date from the actual present, when the Assyrian oppressions had not yet begun, but from the ideal present, when they were threatening Israel with destruction. The indignation of Jehovah would then suddenly come to an end (câlâh za‛am, borrowed in Dan 11:36, and to be interpreted in accordance with Isa 26:20); and the wrath of Jehovah would be, or go, ‛al-tabilthâm. Luzzatto recommends the following emendation of the text, יתּם על־תּבל ואפּי, "and my wrath against the world will cease," tēbēl being used, as in Isa 14:17, with reference to the oikoumenon as enslaved by the imperial power. But the received text gives a better train of thought, if we connect it with Isa 10:26. We must not be led astray, however, by the preposition ‛al, and take the words as meaning, My wrath (burneth) over the destruction inflicted by Asshur upon the people of God, or the destruction endured by the latter. It is to the destruction of the Assyrians that the wrath of Jehovah is now directed; ‛al being used, as it frequently is, to indicate the object upon which the eye is fixed, or to which the intention points (Psa 32:8; Psa 18:42). With this explanation Isa 10:25 leads on to Isa 10:26. The destruction of Asshur is predicted there in two figures drawn from occurrences in the olden time. The almighty Judge would swing the whip over Asshur (‛orer, agitare, as in Sa2 23:18), and smite it, as Midian was once smitten. The rock of Oreb is the place where the Ephraimites slew the Midianitish king 'Oreb (Jdg 7:25). His staff would then be over the sea, i.e., would be stretched out, like the wonder-working staff of Moses, over the sea of affliction, into which the Assyrians had driven Israel (yâm, the sea, an emblem borrowed from the type; see Kohler on Zac 10:11, cf., Psa 66:6); and He would lift it up, commanding the waves of the sea, so that they would swallow Asshur. "In the manner of Egypt:" b'derek Mitzraim (according to Luzzatto in both instances, "on the way to Egypt," which restricts the Assyrian bondage in a most unhistorical manner to the time of the Egyptian campaign) signifies in Isa 10:24, as the Egyptians lifted it up; but here, as it was lifted up above the Egyptians. The expression is intentionally conformed to that in Isa 10:24 : because Asshur had lifted up the rod over Israel in the Egyptian manner, Jehovah would lift it up over Asshur in the Egyptian manner also. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Indignation - Mine anger towards the Assyrian. Cease - As anger commonly does when vengeance is fully executed. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The indignation "Mine indignation" - Indignatio mea, Vulg. ἡ οργη, Sept. μου η οργη κατα σου, MS. Pachom. Μου ἡ οργη ἡ κατα σου, MS. 1. D. 2. So that זעמי zaami, or הזעם hazzaam, as one MS. has it, seems to be the true reading. |
36 And the king [04428] shall do [06213] according to his will [07522]; and he shall exalt [07311] himself, and magnify [01431] himself above every god [0410], and shall speak [01696] marvellous things [06381] against the God [0410] of gods [0410], and shall prosper [06743] till the indignation [02195] be accomplished [03615]: for that that is determined [02782] shall be done [06213].
20 Come [03212], my people [05971], enter [0935] thou into thy chambers [02315], and shut [05462] thy doors [01817] about thee: hide [02247] thyself as it were for a little [04592] moment [07281], until the indignation [02195] be overpast [05674].
24 Therefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] of hosts [06635], O my people [05971] that dwellest [03427] in Zion [06726], be not afraid [03372] of the Assyrian [0804]: he shall smite [05221] thee with a rod [07626], and shall lift up [05375] his staff [04294] against thee, after the manner [01870] of Egypt [04714].
14 And behold at eveningtide [06256] [06153] trouble [01091]; and before the morning [01242] he is not. This is the portion [02506] of them that spoil [08154] us, and the lot [01486] of them that rob [0962] us.
11 So Ebedmelech [05663] took [03947] the men [0582] with him [03027], and went [0935] into the house [01004] of the king [04428] under the treasury [0214], and took [03947] thence old [01094] cast clouts [05499] and old [01094] rotten rags [04418], and let them down [07971] by cords [02256] into the dungeon [0953] to Jeremiah [03414].
12 And Ebedmelech [05663] the Ethiopian [03569] said [0559] unto Jeremiah [03414], Put [07760] now these old [01094] cast clouts [05499] and rotten rags [04418] under thine armholes [0679] [03027] under the cords [02256]. And Jeremiah [03414] did [06213] so.
17 Behold, for peace [07965] I had great bitterness [04751] [04843]: but thou hast in love [02836] to my soul [05315] delivered it from the pit [07845] of corruption [01097]: for thou hast cast [07993] all my sins [02399] behind [0310] thy back [01460].
43 Then said [0559] I unto her that was old [01087] in adulteries [05004], Will they now commit [02181] whoredoms [08457] with her, and she with them?
21 Yea, forty [0705] years [08141] didst thou sustain [03557] them in the wilderness [04057], so that they lacked [02637] nothing; their clothes [08008] waxed not old [01086], and their feet [07272] swelled [01216] not.
13 And these bottles [04997] of wine [03196], which we filled [04390], were new [02319]; and, behold, they be rent [01234]: and these our garments [08008] and our shoes [05275] are become old [01086] by reason of the very [03966] long [07230] journey [01870].
5 And I have led [03212] you forty [0705] years [08141] in the wilderness [04057]: your clothes [08008] are not waxen old [01086] upon you, and thy shoe [05275] is not waxen old [01086] upon thy foot [07272].
4 For they will turn away [05493] thy son [01121] from following [0310] me, that they may serve [05647] other [0312] gods [0430]: so will the anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] be kindled [02734] against you, and destroy [08045] thee suddenly [04118].
35 And it came to pass that night [03915], that the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] went out [03318], and smote [05221] in the camp [04264] of the Assyrians [0804] an hundred [03967] fourscore [08084] and five [02568] thousand [0505]: and when they arose early [07925] in the morning [01242], behold, they were all dead [04191] corpses [06297].
6 He turned [02015] the sea [03220] into dry [03004] land: they went [05674] through the flood [05104] on foot [07272]: there did we rejoice [08055] in him.
11 And he shall pass through [05674] the sea [03220] with affliction [06869], and shall smite [05221] the waves [01530] in the sea [03220], and all the deeps [04688] of the river [02975] shall dry up [03001]: and the pride [01347] of Assyria [0804] shall be brought down [03381], and the sceptre [07626] of Egypt [04714] shall depart away [05493].
25 And they took [03920] two [08147] princes [08269] of the Midianites [04080], Oreb [06159] and Zeeb [02062]; and they slew [02026] Oreb [06159] upon the rock [06697] Oreb [06159], and Zeeb [02062] they slew [02026] at the winepress [03342] of Zeeb [02062], and pursued [07291] Midian [04080], and brought [0935] the heads [07218] of Oreb [06159] and Zeeb [02062] to Gideon [01439] on the other side [05676] Jordan [03383].
18 And Abishai [052], the brother [0251] of Joab [03097], the son [01121] of Zeruiah [06870], was chief [07218] among three [07992]. And he lifted up [05782] his spear [02595] against three [07969] hundred [03967], and slew [02491] them, and had the name [08034] among three [07969].
26 And the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall stir up [05782] a scourge [07752] for him according to the slaughter [04347] of Midian [04080] at the rock [06697] of Oreb [06159]: and as his rod [04294] was upon the sea [03220], so shall he lift it up [05375] after the manner [01870] of Egypt [04714].
25 For yet a very [04213] little while [04592], and the indignation [02195] shall cease [03615], and mine anger [0639] in their destruction [08399].
42 Then did I beat [07833] them small as the dust [06083] before [06440] the wind [07307]: I did cast them out [07324] as the dirt [02916] in the streets [02351].
8 I will instruct [07919] thee and teach [03384] thee in the way [01870] which [02098] thou shalt go [03212]: I will guide [03289] thee with mine eye [05869].
17 That made [07760] the world [08398] as a wilderness [04057], and destroyed [02040] the cities [05892] thereof; that opened [06605] not the house [01004] of his prisoners [0615]?
20 Come [03212], my people [05971], enter [0935] thou into thy chambers [02315], and shut [05462] thy doors [01817] about thee: hide [02247] thyself as it were for a little [04592] moment [07281], until the indignation [02195] be overpast [05674].
17 Is it not yet a very [04213] little while [04592], and Lebanon [03844] shall be turned [07725] into a fruitful field [03759], and the fruitful field [03759] shall be esteemed [02803] as a forest [03293]?
14 But now the LORD [03068] hath spoken [01696], saying [0559], Within three [07969] years [08141], as the years [08141] of an hireling [07916], and the glory [03519] of Moab [04124] shall be contemned [07034], with all that great [07227] multitude [01995]; and the remnant [07605] shall be very [04592] small [04213] and feeble [03808] [03524].
