A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
watchmen--historically, the Jewish priests, &c. (see on Sol 5:2); spiritually, ministers (Isa 62:6; Heb 13:17), faithful in "smiting" (Psalm 141. 5), but (as she leaves them, v. 8) too harsh; or, perhaps, unfaithful; disliking her zeal wherewith she sought Jesus Christ, first, with spiritual prayer, "opening" her heart to Him, and then in charitable works "about the city"; miscalling it fanaticism (Isa 66:5), and taking away her veil (the greatest indignity to an Eastern lady), as though she were positively immodest. She had before sought Him by night in the streets, under strong affection (Sol 3:2-4), and so without rebuff from "the watchmen," found Him immediately; but now after sinful neglect, she encounters pain and delay. God forgives believers, but it is a serious thing to draw on His forgiveness; so the growing reserve of God towards Israel observable in Judges, as His people repeat their demands on His grace.

2 I will rise [06965] now, and go about [05437] the city [05892] in the streets [07784], and in the broad ways [07339] I will seek [01245] him whom my soul [05315] loveth [0157]: I sought [01245] him, but I found [04672] him not.
3 The watchmen [08104] that go about [05437] the city [05892] found [04672] me: to whom I said, Saw [07200] ye him whom my soul [05315] loveth [0157]?
4 It was but a little [04592] that I passed [05674] from them, but I found [04672] him whom my soul [05315] loveth [0157]: I held [0270] him, and would not let him go [07503], until I had brought [0935] him into my mother's [0517] house [01004], and into the chamber [02315] of her that conceived [02029] me.
5 Hear [08085] the word [01697] of the LORD [03068], ye that tremble [02730] at his word [01697]; Your brethren [0251] that hated [08130] you, that cast you out [05077] for my name's [08034] sake, said [0559], Let the LORD [03068] be glorified [03513]: but he shall appear [07200] to your joy [08057], and they shall be ashamed [0954].
17 Obey [3982] them that have the rule [2233] over you [5216], and [2532] submit yourselves [5226]: for [1063] they [846] watch [69] for [5228] your [5216] souls [5590], as [5613] they that must give [591] account [3056], that [2443] they may do [4160] it [5124] with [3326] joy [5479], and [2532] not [3361] with grief [4727]: for [1063] that [5124] is unprofitable [255] for you [5213].
6 I have set [06485] watchmen [08104] upon thy walls [02346], O Jerusalem [03389], which shall never [08548] hold their peace [02814] day [03117] nor night [03915]: ye that make mention [02142] of the LORD [03068], keep not silence [01824],
2 I sleep [03463], but my heart [03820] waketh [05782]: it is the voice [06963] of my beloved [01730] that knocketh [01849], saying, Open [06605] to me, my sister [0269], my love [07474], my dove [03123], my undefiled [08535]: for my head [07218] is filled [04390] with dew [02919], and my locks [06977] with the drops [07447] of the night [03915].
65 For she had said [0559] unto the servant [05650], What [04310] man [0376] is this [01976] that walketh [01980] in the field [07704] to meet us [07125]? And the servant [05650] had said [0559], It is my master [0113]: therefore she took [03947] a vail [06809], and covered herself [03680].
32 The two [08147] doors [01817] also were of olive [08081] tree [06086]; and he carved [07049] upon them carvings [04734] of cherubims [03742] and palm trees [08561] and open [06362] flowers [06731], and overlaid [06823] them with gold [02091], and spread [07286] gold [02091] upon the cherubims [03742], and upon the palm trees [08561].
3 Thy lips [08193] are like a thread [02339] of scarlet [08144], and thy speech [04057] is comely [05000]: thy temples [07541] are like a piece [06400] of a pomegranate [07416] within [01157] thy locks [06777].
1 Behold, thou art fair [03303], my love [07474]; behold, thou art fair [03303]; thou hast doves [03123]' eyes [05869] within [01157] thy locks [06777]: thy hair [08181] is as a flock [05739] of goats [05795], that appear [01570] from mount [02022] Gilead [01568].
12 And she caught [08610] him by his garment [0899], saying [0559], Lie [07901] with me: and he left [05800] his garment [0899] in her hand [03027], and fled [05127], and got [03318] him out [02351].
