A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Wholly awake for God (Luk 14:18-20; Eph 5:14). "An honest resolution is often to (the doing of) duty, like a needle that draws the thread after it" [DURHAM]. Not a mere wish, that counts not the cost--to leave her easy bed, and wander in the dark night seeking Him (Pro 13:4; Mat 21:30; Luk 14:27-33).

the city--Jerusalem, literally (Mat 3:5; Joh 1:19), and spiritually the Church here (Heb 12:22), in glory (Rev 21:2).

broad ways--open spaces at the gates of Eastern cities, where the public assembled for business. So, the assemblies of worshippers (Sol 8:2-3; Pro 1:20-23; Heb 10:25). She had in her first awakening shrunk from them, seeking Jesus Christ alone; but she was desired to seek the footsteps of the flock (Sol 1:8), so now in her second trial she goes forth to them of herself. "The more the soul grows in grace, and the less it leans on ordinances, the more it prizes and profits by them" [MOODY STUART] (Psa 73:16-17).

found him not--Nothing short of Jesus Christ can satisfy her (Job 23:8-10; Psa 63:1-2).

1 A Psalm [04210] of David [01732], when he was in the wilderness [04057] of Judah [03063]. O God [0430], thou art my God [0410]; early will I seek [07836] thee: my soul [05315] thirsteth [06770] for thee, my flesh [01320] longeth [03642] for thee in a dry [06723] and thirsty [05889] land [0776], where no [01097] water [04325] is;
2 To see [07200] thy power [05797] and thy glory [03519], so as I have seen [02372] thee in the sanctuary [06944].
8 Behold, I go [01980] forward [06924], but he is not there; and backward [0268], but I cannot perceive [0995] him:
9 On the left hand [08040], where he doth work [06213], but I cannot behold [02372] him: he hideth [05848] himself on the right hand [03225], that I cannot see [07200] him:
10 But he knoweth [03045] the way [01870] that I take [05978]: when he hath tried [0974] me, I shall come forth [03318] as gold [02091].
16 When I thought [02803] to know [03045] this, it was too painful [05999] for me [05869];
17 Until I went [0935] into the sanctuary [04720] of God [0410]; then understood [0995] I their end [0319].
8 If thou know [03045] not, O thou fairest [03303] among women [0802], go thy way forth [03318] by the footsteps [06119] of the flock [06629], and feed [07462] thy kids [01429] beside the shepherds [07462] ' tents [04908].
25 Not [3361] forsaking [1459] the assembling [1997] of ourselves [1438] together [1997], as [2531] the manner [1485] of some [5100] is; but [235] exhorting [3870] one another: and [2532] so much [5118] the more [3123], as [3745] ye see [991] the day [2250] approaching [1448].
20 Wisdom [02454] crieth [07442] without [02351]; she uttereth [05414] her voice [06963] in the streets [07339]:
21 She crieth [07121] in the chief place [07218] of concourse [01993], in the openings [06607] of the gates [08179]: in the city [05892] she uttereth [0559] her words [0561], saying,
22 How long, ye simple ones [06612], will ye love [0157] simplicity [06612]? and the scorners [03887] delight [02530] in their scorning [03944], and fools [03684] hate [08130] knowledge [01847]?
23 Turn [07725] you at my reproof [08433]: behold, I will pour out [05042] my spirit [07307] unto you, I will make known [03045] my words [01697] unto you.
2 I would lead [05090] thee, and bring [0935] thee into my mother's [0517] house [01004], who would instruct [03925] me: I would cause thee to drink [08248] of spiced [07544] wine [03196] of the juice [06071] of my pomegranate [07416].
3 His left hand [08040] should be under my head [07218], and his right hand [03225] should embrace [02263] me.
2 And [2532] I [1473] John [2491] saw [1492] the holy [40] city [4172], new [2537] Jerusalem [2419], coming down [2597] from [575] God [2316] out of [1537] heaven [3772], prepared [2090] as [5613] a bride [3565] adorned [2885] for her [846] husband [435].
22 But [235] ye are come [4334] unto mount [3735] Sion [4622], and [2532] unto the city [4172] of the living [2198] God [2316], the heavenly [2032] Jerusalem [2419], and [2532] to an innumerable company [3461] of angels [32],
19 And [2532] this [3778] is [2076] the record [3141] of John [2491], when [3753] the Jews [2453] sent [649] priests [2409] and [2532] Levites [3019] from [1537] Jerusalem [2414] to [2443] ask [2065] him [846], Who [5101] art [1488] thou [4771]?
5 Then [5119] went out [1607] to [4314] him [846] Jerusalem [2414], and [2532] all [3956] Judaea [2449], and [2532] all [3956] the region round about [4066] Jordan [2446],
27 And [2532] whosoever [3748] doth [941] not [3756] bear [941] his [846] cross [4716], and [2532] come [2064] after [3694] me [3450], cannot [3756] [1410] be [1511] my [3450] disciple [3101].
28 For [1063] which [5101] of [1537] you [5216], intending [2309] to build [3618] a tower [4444], sitteth [2523] not [3780] down [2523] first [4412], and counteth [5585] the cost [1160], whether [1487] he have [2192] sufficient to [4314] finish [535] it?
29 Lest [3363] haply [3379], after he [846] hath laid [5087] the foundation [2310], and [2532] is [2480] not [3361] able [2480] to finish [1615] it, all [3956] that behold [2334] it begin [756] to mock [1702] him [846],
30 Saying [3004], This [3754] [3778] man [444] began [756] to build [3618], and [2532] was [2480] not [3756] able [2480] to finish [1615].
31 Or [2228] what [5101] king [935], going [4198] to make [4820] war [4171] against [1519] another [2087] king [935], sitteth [2523] not [3780] down [2523] first [4412], and consulteth [1011] whether [1487] he be [2076] able [1415] with [1722] ten [1176] thousand [5505] to meet [528] him that cometh [2064] against [1909] him [846] with [3326] twenty [1501] thousand [5505]?
32 Or else [1490], while the other [846] is [5607] yet [2089] a great way off [4206], he sendeth [649] an ambassage [4242], and desireth [2065] conditions [4314] of peace [1515].
33 So [3779] likewise [3767], whosoever [3956] he be of [1537] you [5216] that [3739] forsaketh [657] not [3756] all [3956] that he hath [5224] [1438], he cannot [3756] [1410] be [1511] my [3450] disciple [3101].
30 And [2532] he came [4334] to the second [1208], and said [2036] likewise [5615]. And [1161] he answered [611] and said [2036], I [1473] go, sir [2962]: and [2532] went [565] not [3756].
4 The soul [05315] of the sluggard [06102] desireth [0183], and hath nothing: but the soul [05315] of the diligent [02742] shall be made fat [01878].
14 Wherefore [1352] he saith [3004], Awake thou [1453] that sleepest [2518], and [2532] arise [450] from [1537] the dead [3498], and [2532] Christ [5547] shall give [2017] thee [4671] light [2017].
18 And [2532] they all [3956] with [575] one [3391] consent began [756] to make excuse [3868]. The first [4413] said [2036] unto him [846], I have bought [59] a piece of ground [68], and [2532] I must [2192] needs [318] go [1831] and [2532] see [1492] it [846]: I pray [2065] thee [4571] have [2192] me [3165] excused [3868].
19 And [2532] another [2087] said [2036], I have bought [59] five [4002] yoke [2201] of oxen [1016], and [2532] I go [4198] to prove [1381] them [846]: I pray [2065] thee [4571] have [2192] me [3165] excused [3868].
20 And [2532] another [2087] said [2036], I have married [1060] a wife [1135], and [2532] therefore [1223] [5124] I cannot [3756] [1410] come [2064].
