mine . . . his--rather, "is for me . . . for Him" (Hos 3:3), where, as here, there is the assurance of indissoluble union, in spite of temporary absence. Sol 2:17, entreating Him to return, shows that He has gone, perhaps through her want of guarding against the "little sins" (Sol 2:15). The order of the clauses is reversed in Sol 6:3, when she is riper in faith: there she rests more on her being His; here, on His being hers; and no doubt her sense of love to Him is a pledge that she is His (Joh 14:21, Joh 14:23; Co1 8:3); this is her consolation in His withdrawal now.
I am his--by creation (Psa 100:3), by redemption (Joh 17:10; Rom 14:8; Co1 6:19).
feedeth--as a "roe," or gazelle (Sol 2:17); instinct is sure to lead him back to his feeding ground, where the lilies abound. So Jesus Christ, though now withdrawn, the bride feels sure will return to His favorite resting-place (Sol 7:10; Psa 132:14). So hereafter (Rev 21:3). Psa 45:1, title, terms his lovely bride's "lilies" [HENGSTENBERG] pure and white, though among thorns (Sol 2:2). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
My beloved - These are the words of the bride, who having come to him upon his gracious invitation, now maketh her boast of him. He feedeth - Abideth and refresheth himself amongst his faithful people, who are compared to lillies, Sol 2:2. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
My beloved is mine - The words of the bride on his entering: "I am thy own; thou art wholly mine."
He feedeth among the lilies - The odor with which he is surrounded is as fine as if he passed the night among the sweetest scented flowers. |
2 As the lily [07799] among thorns [02336], so is my love [07474] among the daughters [01323].
1 To the chief Musician [05329] upon Shoshannim [07799], for the sons [01121] of Korah [07141], Maschil [04905], A Song [07892] of loves [03039]. My heart [03820] is inditing [07370] a good [02896] matter [01697]: I speak [0559] of the things which I have made [04639] touching the king [04428]: my tongue [03956] is the pen [05842] of a ready [04106] writer [05608].
3 And [2532] I heard [191] a great [3173] voice [5456] out of [1537] heaven [3772] saying [3004], Behold [2400], the tabernacle [4633] of God [2316] is with [3326] men [444], and [2532] he will dwell [4637] with [3326] them [846], and [2532] they [846] shall be [2071] his [846] people [2992], and [2532] God [2316] himself [846] shall be [2071] with [3326] them [846], and be their [846] God [2316].
14 This is my rest [04496] for ever [05703]: here will I dwell [03427]; for I have desired [0183] it.
10 I am my beloved's [01730], and his desire [08669] is toward me.
17 Until the day [03117] break [06315], and the shadows [06752] flee away [05127], turn [05437], my beloved [01730], and be thou like [01819] a roe [06643] or a young [06082] hart [0354] upon the mountains [02022] of Bether [01336].
19 What [2228]? know ye [1492] not [3756] that [3754] your [5216] body [4983] is [2076] the temple [3485] of the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] which is in [1722] you [5213], which [3739] ye have [2192] of [575] God [2316], and [2532] ye are [2075] not [3756] your own [1438]?
8 For [1063] whether [1437] [5037] we live [2198], we live [2198] unto the Lord [2962]; and whether [1437] [5037] we die [599], we die [599] unto the Lord [2962]: whether [1437] [5037] we live [2198] therefore [3767], or [1437] [5037] die [599], we are [2070] the Lord's [2962].
10 And [2532] all [3956] mine [1699] are [2076] thine [4674], and [2532] thine [4674] are mine [1699]; and [2532] I am glorified [1392] in [1722] them [846].
3 Know [03045] ye that the LORD [03068] he is God [0430]: it is he that hath made [06213] us, and not we ourselves; we are his people [05971], and the sheep [06629] of his pasture [04830].
3 But [1161] if any man [1536] love [25] God [2316], the same [3778] is known [1097] of [5259] him [846].
23 Jesus [2424] answered [611] and [2532] said [2036] unto him [846], If [1437] a man [5100] love [25] me [3165], he will keep [5083] my [3450] words [3056]: and [2532] my [3450] Father [3962] will love [25] him [846], and [2532] we will come [2064] unto [4314] him [846], and [2532] make [4160] our abode [3438] with [3844] him [846].
21 He that hath [2192] my [3450] commandments [1785], and [2532] keepeth [5083] them [846], he [1565] it is [2076] that loveth [25] me [3165]: and [1161] he that loveth [25] me [3165] shall be loved [25] of [5259] my [3450] Father [3962], and [2532] I [1473] will love [25] him [846], and [2532] will manifest [1718] myself [1683] to him [846].
3 I am my beloved's [01730], and my beloved [01730] is mine: he feedeth [07462] among the lilies [07799].
15 Take [0270] us the foxes [07776], the little [06996] foxes [07776], that spoil [02254] the vines [03754]: for our vines [03754] have tender grapes [05563].
17 Until the day [03117] break [06315], and the shadows [06752] flee away [05127], turn [05437], my beloved [01730], and be thou like [01819] a roe [06643] or a young [06082] hart [0354] upon the mountains [02022] of Bether [01336].
3 And I said [0559] unto her, Thou shalt abide [03427] for me many [07227] days [03117]; thou shalt not play the harlot [02181], and thou shalt not be [01961] for another man [0376]: so will I also be for thee.
2 As the lily [07799] among thorns [02336], so is my love [07474] among the daughters [01323].
