a cloud--literally, "The cloud," the mystic cloud which was the well-known symbol of the Divine Presence. After remaining at a great distance from them on the summit of the mount, it appeared to be in motion; and if many among them had a secret misgiving about the issue, how the fainting heart would revive, the interest of the moment intensely increase, and the tide of joy swell in every bosom, when that symbolic cloud was seen slowly and majestically descending towards the plain below and covering the tabernacle. The entire and universal concealment of the tabernacle within the folds of an impervious cloud was not without a deep and instructive meaning; it was a protection to the sacred edifice from the burning heats of the Arabian climate; it was a token of the Divine Presence; and it was also an emblem of the Mosaic dispensation, which, though it was a revelation from heaven, yet left many things hid in obscurity; for it was a dark cloud compared with the bright cloud, which betokened the clearer and fuller discoveries of the divine character and glory in the gospel (Mat 17:5).
the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle--that is, light and fire, a created splendor, which was the peculiar symbol of God (Jo1 1:5). Whether this light was inherent in the cloud or not, it emanated from it on this occasion, and making its entry, not with the speed of a lightning flash as if it were merely an electric spark, but in majestic splendor, it passed through the outer porch into the interior of the most holy place (Kg1 8:10; Joh 1:14). Its miraculous character is shown by the fact, that, though "it filled the tabernacle," not a curtain or any article of furniture was so much as singed. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
On the distinction between the tent as the outer shelter and the tabernacle as the dwelling-place of Yahweh, which is very clear in these verses, see Exo 26:1 note. The glory appeared as a light within and as a cloud on the outside.
Exo 40:35
Compare the entrance of the high priest into the holy of holies on the day of atonement, Lev 16:2, Lev 16:13. For special appearances of this glory in the tabernacle, see Num 14:10; Num 16:19, Num 16:42.
The tabernacle, after it had accompanied the Israelites in their wanderings in the wilderness, was most probably first set up in the holy land at Gilgal Jos 4:19; Jos 5:10; Jos 9:6; Jos 10:6, Jos 10:43. But before the death of Joshua, it was erected at Shiloh Jos 18:1; Jos 19:51. Here it remained as the national sanctuary throughout the time of the Judges Jos 18:8; Jos 21:2; Jos 22:19; Jdg 18:31; Jdg 21:19; Sa1 1:3; Sa1 4:3. But its external construction was at this time somewhat changed, and doors, strictly so called, had taken the place of the entrance curtain Sa1 3:15 : hence, it seems to have been sometimes called the temple Sa1 1:9; Sa1 3:3, the name by which the structure of Solomon was afterward commonly known. After the time of Eli it was removed to Nob in the canton of Benjamin, not far from Jerusalem Sa1 21:1-9. From thence, in the time of David, it was removed to Gibeon Ch1 16:39; Ch1 21:29; Ch2 1:3; Kg1 3:4; Kg1 9:2. It was brought from Gibeon to Jerusalem by Solomon Kg1 8:4. After this, it disappears from the narrative of Scripture. When the temple of Solomon was built, "the tabernacle of the tent" had entirely performed its work; it had protected the ark of the covenant during the migrations of the people until they were settled in the land, and the promise was fulfilled, that the Lord would choose out a place for Himself in which His name should be preserved and His service should be maintained Deu 12:14, Deu 12:21; Deu 14:24.
In accordance with its dignity as the most sacred object in the sanctuary, the original ark of the covenant constructed by Moses was preserved and transferred from the tabernacle to the temple. The golden altar, the candlestick and the showbread table were renewed by Solomon. They were subsequently renewed by Zerubbabel, and lastly by the Maccabees (see Exo 25:23.) But the ark was preserved in the temple until Jerusalem was taken by the forces of Nebuchadnezzar Ch2 35:3; Jer 3:16. It was never replaced in the second temple. According to a rabbinical tradition, its site was marked by a block of stone.

glory
Compare (Eph 2:22).
What the shekinah glory was to tabernacle and temple, that the Spirit is to the "holy temple," the Church, and to the temple which is the believer's body. (Co1 6:19).

Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
When the sanctuary, that had been built for the Lord for a dwelling in Israel, had been set up with all its apparatus, "the cloud covering the tabernacle, and the glory of Jehovah filled the dwelling," so that Moses was unable to enter. The cloud, in which Jehovah had hitherto been present with His people, and guided and protected them upon their journeying (see at Exo 13:21-22), now came down upon the tabernacle and filled the dwelling with the gracious presence of the Lord. So long as this cloud rested upon the tabernacle the children of Israel remained encamped; but when it ascended, they broke up the encampment to proceed onwards. This sign was Jehovah's command for encamping or going forward "throughout all their journeys" (Exo 40:36-38). This statement is repeated still more elaborately in Num 9:15-23. The mode in which the glory of Jehovah filled the dwelling, or in which Jehovah manifested His presence within it, is not described; but the glory of Jehovah filling the dwelling is clearly distinguished from the cloud coming down upon the tabernacle. It is obvious, however, from Lev 16:2, and Kg1 8:10-11, that in the dwelling the glory of God was also manifested in a cloud. At the dedication of the temple (Kg1 8:10-11) the expression "the cloud filled the house of Jehovah" is used interchangeably with "the glory of Jehovah filled the house of Jehovah." To consecrate the sanctuary, which had been finished and erected as His dwelling, and to give to the people a visible proof that He had chosen it for His dwelling, Jehovah filled the dwelling in both its parts with the cloud which shadowed forth His presence, so that Moses was unable to enter it. This cloud afterwards drew back into the most holy place, to dwell there, above the outspread wings of the cherubim of the ark of the covenant; so that Moses and (at a later period) the priests were able to enter the holy place and perform the required service there, without seeing the sign of the gracious presence of God, which was hidden by the curtain of the most holy place. So long as the Israelites were on their journey to Canaan, the presence of Jehovah was manifested outwardly and visibly by the cloud, which settled upon the ark, and rose up from it when they were to travel onward.
With the completion of this building and its divine consecration, Israel had now received a real pledge of the permanence of the covenant of grace, which Jehovah had concluded with it; a sanctuary which perfectly corresponded to the existing circumstances of its religious development, and kept constantly before it the end of its calling from God. For although God dwelt in the tabernacle in the midst of His people, and the Israelites might appear before Him, to pray for and receive the covenant blessings that were promised them, they were still forbidden to go directly to God's throne of grace. The barrier, which sin had erected between the holy God and the unholy nation, was not yet taken away. To this end the law was given, which could only increase their consciousness of sin and unworthiness before God. But as this barrier had already been broken through by the promise of the Lord, that He would meet the people in His glory before the door of the tabernacle at the altar of burnt-offering (Exo 29:42-43); so the entrance of the chosen people into the dwelling of God was effected mediatorially by the service of the sanctified priests in the holy place, which also prefigured their eventual reception into the house of the Lord. And even the curtain, which still hid the glory of God from the chosen priests and sanctified mediators of the nation, was to be lifted at least once a year by the anointed priest, who had been called by God to be the representative of the whole congregation. On the day of atonement the high priest was to sprinkle the blood of atonement in front of the throne of grace, to make expiation for the children of Israel because of all their sin (Lev 16), and to prefigure the perfect atonement through the blood of the eternal Mediator, through which the way to the throne of grace is opened to all believers, that they may go into the house of God and abide there for ever, and for ever see God.

Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
As when God had finished this earth, which he designed for man's habitation, he made man, and put him in possession of it; so when Moses had finished the tabernacle, which was designed for God's dwelling - place among men, God came and took possession of it. By these visible tokens of his coming among them, he testified both the return of his favour, which they had forfeited by the golden calf, and his gracious acceptance of their care and pains about the tabernacle. Thus God shewed himself well - pleased with what they had done, and abundantly rewarded them. A cloud covered the tent - The same cloud which, as the chariot or pavilion of the Shechinah, had come up before them out of Egypt, now settled upon the tabernacle, and hovered over it, even in the hottest and clearest day; for it was none of those clouds which the sun scatters. This cloud was intended to be a token of God's presence, constantly visible day and night to all Israel. A protection of the tabernacle: they had sheltered it with one covering upon another, but after all, the cloud that covered it was its best guard: And a guide to the camp of Israel in their march through the wilderness. While the cloud continued on the tabernacle, they rested; when it removed, they removed and followed it, as being purely under a divine conduct. And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle - The Shechinah now made an awful entry into the tabernacle, passing through the outer part of it into the most holy place, and there seating itself between the cherubim. It was in light and fire, and, for ought we know, no other - wise, that the Shechinah made itself visible. With these the tabernacle was now filled; yet as before the bush, so now the curtains were not consumed, for, to those that have received the anointing, the majesty of God is not destroying. Yet now so dazzling was the light, and so dreadful was the fire, that Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, at the door of which he attended, till the splendor was a little abated, and the glory of the Lord retired within the veil. But what Moses could not do, our Lord Jesus has done, whom God caused to draw near and approach, and as the fore - runner he is for us entered, and has invited us to come boldly even to the mercy - seat. He was able to enter into the holy place not made with hands; he is himself the true tabernacle, filled with the glory of God, even with that divine grace and truth which were figured by this fire and light. In him the Shechinah took up its rest for ever, for in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Then a cloud covered the tent - Thus God gave his approbation of the work; and as this was visible, so it was a sign to all the people that Jehovah was among them.
And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle - How this was manifested we cannot tell; it was probably by some light or brightness which was insufferable to the sight, for Moses himself could not enter in because of the cloud and the glory, Exo 40:35. Precisely the same happened when Solomon had dedicated his temple; for it is said that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord; Kg1 8:10, Kg1 8:11. Previously to this the cloud of the Divine glory had rested upon that tent or tabernacle which Moses had pitched without the camp, after the transgression in the matter of the molten calf; but now the cloud removed from that tabernacle and rested upon this one, which was made by the command and under the direction of God himself. And there is reason to believe that this tabernacle was pitched in the center of the camp, all the twelve tribes pitching their different tents in a certain order around it. |
14 And [2532] the Word [3056] was made [1096] flesh [4561], and [2532] dwelt [4637] among [1722] us [2254], (and [2532] we beheld [2300] his [846] glory [1391], the glory [1391] as [5613] of the only begotten [3439] of [3844] the Father [3962],) full [4134] of grace [5485] and [2532] truth [225].
10 And it came to pass, when the priests [03548] were come out [03318] of the holy [06944] place, that the cloud [06051] filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068],
5 This [3778] then [2532] is [2076] the message [1860] which [3739] we have heard [191] of [575] him [846], and [2532] declare [312] unto you [5213], that [3754] God [2316] is [2076] light [5457], and [2532] in [1722] him [846] is [2076] no [3756] darkness [4653] at all [3762].
5 While he [846] yet [2089] spake [2980], behold [2400], a bright [5460] cloud [3507] overshadowed [1982] them [846]: and [2532] behold [2400] a voice [5456] out of [1537] the cloud [3507], which said [3004], This [3778] is [2076] my [3450] beloved [27] Son [5207], in [1722] whom [3739] I am well pleased [2106]; hear ye [191] him [846].
16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied [07235] and increased [06509] in the land [0776], in those days [03117], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], they shall say [0559] no more, The ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068]: neither shall it come [05927] to mind [03820]: neither shall they remember [02142] it; neither shall they visit [06485] it; neither shall that be done [06213] any more.
3 And said [0559] unto the Levites [03881] that taught [0995] [04000] all Israel [03478], which were holy [06918] unto the LORD [03068], Put [05414] the holy [06944] ark [0727] in the house [01004] which Solomon [08010] the son [01121] of David [01732] king [04428] of Israel [03478] did build [01129]; it shall not be a burden [04853] upon your shoulders [03802]: serve [05647] now the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and his people [05971] Israel [03478],
23 Thou shalt also make [06213] a table [07979] of shittim [07848] wood [06086]: two cubits [0520] shall be the length [0753] thereof, and a cubit [0520] the breadth [07341] thereof, and a cubit [0520] and a half [02677] the height [06967] thereof.
24 And if the way [01870] be too long [07235] for thee, so that [03588] thou art not able [03201] to carry [05375] it; or if the place [04725] be too far [07368] from thee, which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] shall choose [0977] to set [07760] his name [08034] there, when the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath blessed [01288] thee:
21 If the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath chosen [0977] to put [07760] his name [08034] there be too far [07368] from thee, then thou shalt kill [02076] of thy herd [01241] and of thy flock [06629], which the LORD [03068] hath given [05414] thee, as I have commanded [06680] thee, and thou shalt eat [0398] in thy gates [08179] whatsoever thy soul [05315] lusteth after [0185].
14 But in the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] shall choose [0977] in one [0259] of thy tribes [07626], there thou shalt offer [05927] thy burnt offerings [05930], and there thou shalt do [06213] all that I command [06680] thee.
4 And they brought up [05927] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], and the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], and all the holy [06944] vessels [03627] that were in the tabernacle [0168], even those did the priests [03548] and the Levites [03881] bring up [05927].
2 That the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] to Solomon [08010] the second time [08145], as he had appeared [07200] unto him at Gibeon [01391].
4 And the king [04428] went [03212] to Gibeon [01391] to sacrifice [02076] there; for that [01931] was the great [01419] high place [01116]: a thousand [0505] burnt offerings [05930] did Solomon [08010] offer [05927] upon that altar [04196].
3 So Solomon [08010], and all the congregation [06951] with him, went [03212] to the high place [01116] that was at Gibeon [01391]; for there was the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] of God [0430], which Moses [04872] the servant [05650] of the LORD [03068] had made [06213] in the wilderness [04057].
29 For the tabernacle [04908] of the LORD [03068], which Moses [04872] made [06213] in the wilderness [04057], and the altar [04196] of the burnt offering [05930], were at that season [06256] in the high place [01116] at Gibeon [01391].
39 And Zadok [06659] the priest [03548], and his brethren [0251] the priests [03548], before [06440] the tabernacle [04908] of the LORD [03068] in the high place [01116] that was at Gibeon [01391],
1 Then came [0935] David [01732] to Nob [05011] to Ahimelech [0288] the priest [03548]: and Ahimelech [0288] was afraid [02729] at the meeting [07125] of David [01732], and said [0559] unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man [0376] with thee?
2 And David [01732] said [0559] unto Ahimelech [0288] the priest [03548], The king [04428] hath commanded [06680] me a business [01697], and hath said [0559] unto me, Let no man [0376] know [03045] any thing [03972] of the business [01697] whereabout I send [07971] thee, and what I have commanded [06680] thee: and I have appointed [03045] my servants [05288] to such [06423] and such [0492] a place [04725].
3 Now therefore what is [03426] under thine hand [03027]? give [05414] me five [02568] loaves of bread [03899] in mine hand [03027], or what there is present [04672].
4 And the priest [03548] answered [06030] David [01732], and said [0559], There is no common [02455] bread [03899] under mine hand [03027], but there is [03426] hallowed [06944] bread [03899]; if the young men [05288] have kept [08104] themselves at least [0389] from women [0802].
5 And David [01732] answered [06030] the priest [03548], and said [0559] unto him, Of a truth [0518] women [0802] have been kept [06113] from us about these three [08032] days [08543], since I came out [03318], and the vessels [03627] of the young men [05288] are holy [06944], and the bread is in a manner [01870] common [02455], yea, though it were sanctified [06942] this day [03117] in the vessel [03627].
6 So the priest [03548] gave [05414] him hallowed [06944] bread: for there was no bread [03899] there but the shewbread [03899] [06440], that was taken [05493] from before [06440] the LORD [03068], to put [07760] hot [02527] bread [03899] in the day [03117] when it was taken away [03947].
7 Now a certain man [0376] of the servants [05650] of Saul [07586] was there that day [03117], detained [06113] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and his name [08034] was Doeg [01673], an Edomite [0130], the chiefest [047] of the herdmen [07462] that belonged to Saul [07586].
8 And David [01732] said [0559] unto Ahimelech [0288], And is there [03426] not [0371] here under thine hand [03027] spear [02595] or sword [02719]? for I have neither brought [03947] my sword [02719] nor my weapons [03627] with me [03027], because the king's [04428] business [01697] required [01961] haste [05169].
9 And the priest [03548] said [0559], The sword [02719] of Goliath [01555] the Philistine [06430], whom thou slewest [05221] in the valley [06010] of Elah [0425], behold, it is here wrapped [03874] in a cloth [08071] behind [0310] the ephod [0646]: if thou wilt take [03947] that, take [03947] it: for there is no other [0312] save [02108] that here [02088]. And David [01732] said [0559], There is none like that; give [05414] it me.
3 And ere the lamp [05216] of God [0430] went out [03518] in the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068], where the ark [0727] of God [0430] was, and Samuel [08050] was laid down [07901] to sleep;
9 So Hannah [02584] rose up [06965] after [0310] they had eaten [0398] in Shiloh [07887], and after [0310] they had drunk [08354]. Now Eli [05941] the priest [03548] sat [03427] upon a seat [03678] by a post [04201] of the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068].
15 And Samuel [08050] lay [07901] until the morning [01242], and opened [06605] the doors [01817] of the house [01004] of the LORD [03068]. And Samuel [08050] feared [03372] to shew [05046] Eli [05941] the vision [04759].
3 And when the people [05971] were come [0935] into the camp [04264], the elders [02205] of Israel [03478] said [0559], Wherefore hath the LORD [03068] smitten [05062] us to day [03117] before [06440] the Philistines [06430]? Let us fetch [03947] the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] out of Shiloh [07887] unto us, that, when it cometh [0935] among [07130] us, it may save [03467] us out of the hand [03709] of our enemies [0341].
3 And this [01931] man [0376] went up [05927] out of his city [05892] yearly [03117] [03117] to worship [07812] and to sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] in Shiloh [07887]. And the two [08147] sons [01121] of Eli [05941], Hophni [02652] and Phinehas [06372], the priests [03548] of the LORD [03068], were there.
19 Then they said [0559], Behold, there is a feast [02282] of the LORD [03068] in Shiloh [07887] yearly [03117] [03117] in a place which is on the north side [06828] of Bethel [01008], on the east side [04217] [08121] of the highway [04546] that goeth up [05927] from Bethel [01008] to Shechem [07927], and on the south [05045] of Lebonah [03829].
31 And they set them up [07760] Micah's [04318] graven image [06459], which he made [06213], all the time [03117] that the house [01004] of God [0430] was in Shiloh [07887].
19 Notwithstanding [0389], if the land [0776] of your possession [0272] be unclean [02931], then pass ye over [05674] unto the land [0776] of the possession [0272] of the LORD [03068], wherein the LORD'S [03068] tabernacle [04908] dwelleth [07931], and take possession [0270] among [08432] us: but rebel [04775] not against the LORD [03068], nor [0408] rebel [04775] against us, in building [01129] you an altar [04196] beside [01107] the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] our God [0430].
2 And they spake [01696] unto them at Shiloh [07887] in the land [0776] of Canaan [03667], saying [0559], The LORD [03068] commanded [06680] by the hand [03027] of Moses [04872] to give [05414] us cities [05892] to dwell in [03427], with the suburbs [04054] thereof for our cattle [0929].
8 And the men [0582] arose [06965], and went away [03212]: and Joshua [03091] charged [06680] them that went [01980] to describe [03789] the land [0776], saying [0559], Go [03212] and walk [01980] through the land [0776], and describe [03789] it, and come again [07725] to me, that I may here cast [07993] lots [01486] for you before [06440] the LORD [03068] in Shiloh [07887].
51 These are the inheritances [05159], which Eleazar [0499] the priest [03548], and Joshua [03091] the son [01121] of Nun [05126], and the heads [07218] of the fathers [01] of the tribes [04294] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], divided for an inheritance [05157] by lot [01486] in Shiloh [07887] before [06440] the LORD [03068], at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]. So they made an end [03615] of dividing [02505] the country [0776].
1 And the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] assembled together [06950] at Shiloh [07887], and set up [07931] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] there. And the land [0776] was subdued [03533] before [06440] them.
43 And Joshua [03091] returned [07725], and all Israel [03478] with him, unto the camp [04264] to Gilgal [01537].
6 And the men [0582] of Gibeon [01391] sent [07971] unto Joshua [03091] to the camp [04264] to Gilgal [01537], saying [0559], Slack [07503] not thy hand [03027] from thy servants [05650]; come up [05927] to us quickly [04120], and save [03467] us, and help [05826] us: for all the kings [04428] of the Amorites [0567] that dwell [03427] in the mountains [02022] are gathered together [06908] against us.
6 And they went [03212] to Joshua [03091] unto the camp [04264] at Gilgal [01537], and said [0559] unto him, and to the men [0376] of Israel [03478], We be come [0935] from a far [07350] country [0776]: now therefore make [03772] ye a league [01285] with us.
10 And the children [01121] of Israel [03478] encamped [02583] in Gilgal [01537], and kept [06213] the passover [06453] on the fourteenth [0702] [06240] day [03117] of the month [02320] at even [06153] in the plains [06160] of Jericho [03405].
19 And the people [05971] came up [05927] out of Jordan [03383] on the tenth [06218] day of the first [07223] month [02320], and encamped [02583] in Gilgal [01537], in the east [04217] border [07097] of Jericho [03405].
42 And it came to pass, when the congregation [05712] was gathered [06950] against Moses [04872] and against Aaron [0175], that they looked [06437] toward the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and, behold, the cloud [06051] covered [03680] it, and the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200].
19 And Korah [07141] gathered [06950] all the congregation [05712] against them unto the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] unto all the congregation [05712].
10 But all the congregation [05712] bade [0559] stone [07275] them with stones [068]. And the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] in the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before all the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
13 And he shall put [05414] the incense [07004] upon the fire [0784] before [06440] the LORD [03068], that the cloud [06051] of the incense [07004] may cover [03680] the mercy seat [03727] that is upon the testimony [05715], that he die [04191] not:
2 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Speak [01696] unto Aaron [0175] thy brother [0251], that he come [0935] not at all times [06256] into the holy [06944] place within [01004] the vail [06532] before [06440] the mercy seat [03727], which is upon the ark [0727]; that he die [04191] not: for I will appear [07200] in the cloud [06051] upon the mercy [03727] seat.
35 And Moses [04872] was not able [03201] to enter [0935] into the tent [0168] of the congregation [04150], because the cloud [06051] abode [07931] thereon, and the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] filled [04390] the tabernacle [04908].
1 Moreover thou shalt make [06213] the tabernacle [04908] with ten [06235] curtains [03407] of fine twined [07806] linen [08336], and blue [08504], and purple [0713], and scarlet [08144] [08438]: with cherubims [03742] of cunning [02803] work [04639] shalt thou make [06213] them.
19 What [2228]? know ye [1492] not [3756] that [3754] your [5216] body [4983] is [2076] the temple [3485] of the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] which is in [1722] you [5213], which [3739] ye have [2192] of [575] God [2316], and [2532] ye are [2075] not [3756] your own [1438]?
22 In [1722] whom [3739] ye [5210] also [2532] are builded together [4925] for [1519] an habitation [2732] of God [2316] through [1722] the Spirit [4151].
42 This shall be a continual [08548] burnt offering [05930] throughout your generations [01755] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: where I will meet [03259] you, to speak [01696] there unto thee.
43 And there I will meet [03259] with the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and the tabernacle shall be sanctified [06942] by my glory [03519].
10 And it came to pass, when the priests [03548] were come out [03318] of the holy [06944] place, that the cloud [06051] filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068],
11 So that the priests [03548] could [03201] not stand [05975] to minister [08334] because [06440] of the cloud [06051]: for the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] had filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
15 And on the day [03117] that the tabernacle [04908] was reared up [06965] the cloud [06051] covered [03680] the tabernacle [04908], namely, the tent [0168] of the testimony [05715]: and at even [06153] there was upon the tabernacle [04908] as it were the appearance [04758] of fire [0784], until the morning [01242].
16 So it was alway [08548]: the cloud [06051] covered [03680] it by day, and the appearance [04758] of fire [0784] by night [03915].
17 And when [06310] the cloud [06051] was taken up [05927] from the tabernacle [0168], then after [0310] that the children [01121] of Israel [03478] journeyed [05265]: and in the place [04725] where the cloud [06051] abode [07931], there the children [01121] of Israel [03478] pitched their tents [02583].
18 At the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] journeyed [05265], and at the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] they pitched [02583]: as long as [03117] the cloud [06051] abode [07931] upon the tabernacle [04908] they rested [02583] in their tents.
19 And when the cloud [06051] tarried long [0748] upon the tabernacle [04908] many [07227] days [03117], then the children [01121] of Israel [03478] kept [08104] the charge [04931] of the LORD [03068], and journeyed [05265] not.
20 And so it was [03426], when the cloud [06051] was a few [04557] days [03117] upon the tabernacle [04908]; according to the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] they abode [02583] in their tents, and according to the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] they journeyed [05265].
21 And so it was [03426], when the cloud [06051] abode from even [06153] unto the morning [01242], and that the cloud [06051] was taken up [05927] in the morning [01242], then they journeyed [05265]: whether it was by day [03119] or by night [03915] that the cloud [06051] was taken up [05927], they journeyed [05265].
22 Or whether it were two days [03117], or a month [02320], or a year [03117], that the cloud [06051] tarried [0748] upon the tabernacle [04908], remaining [07931] thereon, the children [01121] of Israel [03478] abode [02583] in their tents, and journeyed [05265] not: but when it was taken up [05927], they journeyed [05265].
23 At the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] they rested [02583] in the tents, and at the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] they journeyed [05265]: they kept [08104] the charge [04931] of the LORD [03068], at the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068] by the hand [03027] of Moses [04872].
36 And when the cloud [06051] was taken up [05927] from [05921] over the tabernacle [04908], the children [01121] of Israel [03478] went onward [05265] in all their journeys [04550]:
37 But if the cloud [06051] were not taken up [05927], then they journeyed [05265] not till the day [03117] that it was taken up [05927].
38 For the cloud [06051] of the LORD [03068] was upon the tabernacle [04908] by day [03119], and fire [0784] was on it by night [03915], in the sight [05869] of all the house [01004] of Israel [03478], throughout all their journeys [04550].
21 And the LORD [03068] went [01980] before [06440] them by day [03119] in a pillar [05982] of a cloud [06051], to lead [05148] them the way [01870]; and by night [03915] in a pillar [05982] of fire [0784], to give them light [0215]; to go [03212] by day [03119] and night [03915]:
22 He took not away [04185] the pillar [05982] of the cloud [06051] by day [03119], nor the pillar [05982] of fire [0784] by night [03915], from before [06440] the people [05971].
11 So that the priests [03548] could [03201] not stand [05975] to minister [08334] because [06440] of the cloud [06051]: for the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] had filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
10 And it came to pass, when the priests [03548] were come out [03318] of the holy [06944] place, that the cloud [06051] filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068],
35 And Moses [04872] was not able [03201] to enter [0935] into the tent [0168] of the congregation [04150], because the cloud [06051] abode [07931] thereon, and the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] filled [04390] the tabernacle [04908].
