Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down--Intelligence of the idolatrous scene enacted at the foot of the mount was communicated to Moses in language borrowed from human passions and feelings, and the judgment of a justly offended God was pronounced in terms of just indignation against the gross violation of the so recently promulgated laws. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The faithfulness of Moses in the office that had been entrusted to him was now to be put to the test. It was to be made manifest whether he loved his own glory better than he loved the brethren who were under his charge; whether he would prefer that he should himself become the founder of a "great nation," or that the Lord's promise should be fulfilled in the whole people of Israel. This may have been especially needful for Moses, in consequence of his natural disposition. See Num 12:3; and compare Exo 3:11. With this trial of Moses repeated in a very similar manner Num 14:11-23, may be compared the trial of Abraham Gen. 22 and of our Saviour Mat 4:8-10.
Exo 32:8
These be thy gods ... have brought - This is thy god, O Israel, who has brought ...
Exo 32:10
Let me alone - But Moses did not let the Lord alone; he wrestled, as Jacob had done, until, like Jacob, he obtained the blessing Gen 32:24-29.
Exo 32:14
This states a fact which was not revealed to Moses until after his second intercession when he had come down from the mountain and witnessed the sin of the people Exo 32:30-34. He was then assured that the Lord's love to His ancient people would prevail God is said, in the language of Scripture, to "repent," when His forgiving love is seen by man to blot out the letter of His judgments against sin (Sa2 24:16; Joe 2:13; Jon 3:10, etc.); or when the sin of man seems to human sight to have disappointed the purposes of grace (Gen 6:6; Sa1 15:35, etc.). The awakened conscience is said to "repent," when, having felt its sin, it feels also the divine forgiveness: it is at this crisis that God, according to the language of Scripture, repents toward the sinner. Thus, the repentance of God made known in and through the One true Mediator reciprocates the repentance of the returning sinner, and reveals to him atonement.
Exo 32:17-18
Moses does not tell Joshua of the divine communication that had been made to him respecting the apostasy of the people, but only corrects his impression by calling his attention to the kind of noise which they are making.
Exo 32:19
Though Moses had been prepared by the revelation on the Mount, his righteous indignation was stirred up beyond control when the abomination was before his eyes.
Exo 32:20
See Deu 9:21. What is related in this verse must have occupied some time and may have followed the rebuke of Aaron. The act was symbolic, of course. The idol was brought to nothing and the people were made to swallow their own sin (compare Mic 7:13-14).
Exo 32:22
Aaron's reference to the character of the people, and his manner of stating what he had done Exo. 5:24, are very characteristic of the deprecating language of a weak mind.
Exo 32:23
Make us gods - Make us a god.
Exo 32:25
Naked - Rather unruly, or "licentious".
Shame among their enemies - Compare Psa 44:13; Psa 79:4; Deu 28:37.
Exo 32:26-29
The tribe of Levi, Moses' own tribe, now distinguished itself by immediately returning to its allegiance and obeying the call to fight on the side of Yahweh. We need not doubt that the 3,000 who were slain were those who persisted in resisting Moses. The spirit of the narrative forbids us to conceive that the act of the Levites was anything like an indiscriminate massacre. An amnesty had first been offered to all by the words: "Who is on the Lord's side?" Those who were forward to draw the sword were directed not to spare their closest relations or friends; but this must plainly have been with an understood qualification as regards the conduct of those who were to be slain. Had it not been so, they who were on the Lord's side would have had to destroy each other. We need not stumble at the bold, simple way in which the statement is made.
Exo 32:29
Consecrate yourselves to day to the Lord ... - The margin contains the literal rendering. Our version gives the most probable meaning of the Hebrew, and is supported by the best authority. The Levites were to prove themselves in a special way the servants of Yahweh, in anticipation of their formal consecration as ministers of the sanctuary (compare Deu 10:8), by manifesting a self-sacrificing zeal in carrying out the divine command, even upon their nearest relatives.
Exo 32:31
Returned unto the Lord - i. e. again he ascended the mountain.
Gods of gold - a god of gold.
Exo 32:32
For a similar form of expression, in which the conclusion is left to be supplied by the mind of the reader, see Dan 3:15; Luk 13:9; Luk 19:42; Joh 6:62; Rom 9:22. For the same thought, see Rom 9:3. It is for such as Moses and Paul to realize, and to dare to utter, their readiness to be wholly sacrificed for the sake of those whom God has entrusted to their love. This expresses the perfected idea of the whole burnt-offering.
Thy book - The figure is taken from the enrolment of the names of citizens. This is its first occurrence in the Scriptures. See the marginal references. and Isa 4:3; Dan 12:1; Luk 10:20; Phi 4:3; Rev 3:5, etc.
Exo 32:33, Exo 32:34
Each offender was to suffer for his own sin. Compare Exo 20:5; Eze 18:4, Eze 18:20. Moses was not to be taken at his word. He was to fulfill his appointed mission of leading on the people toward the land of promise.
Exo 32:34
Mine Angel shall go before thee - See the marginal references and Gen 12:7.
In the day when I visit ... - Compare Num 14:22-24. But though the Lord chastized the individuals, He did not take His blessing from the nation. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Before Moses left the mountain, God told him of the apostasy of the people (Exo 32:7, Exo 32:8). "Thy people, which thou hast brought out of Egypt:" God says this not in the sense of an "obliqua exprobratio," or "Mosen quodammodo vocare in partem criminis quo examinetur ejus tolerantia et plus etiam maeroris ex rei indignitate concipiat" (Calvin), or even because the Israelites, who had broken the covenant, were no longer the people of Jehovah; but the transgression of the people concerned Moses as the mediator of the covenant.
Exo 32:8
"They have turned aside quickly (lit., hurriedly):" this had increased their guilt, and made their ingratitude to Jehovah, their Redeemer, all the more glaring.
Exo 32:9-10
"Behold, it is a stiff-necked people (a people with a hard neck, that will not bend to the commandment of God; cf. Exo 33:3, Exo 33:5; Exo 34:9; Deu 9:6, etc.): now therefore suffer Me, that My wrath may burn against them, and I may consume them, and I will make of thee a great nation." Jehovah, as the unchangeably true and faithful God, would not, and could not, retract the promises which He had given to the patriarchs, or leave them unfulfilled; and therefore if in His wrath He should destroy the nation, which had shown the obduracy of its nature in its speedy apostasy, He would still fulfil His promise in the person of Moses, and make of him a great nation, as He had promised Abraham in Gen 12:2. When God says to Moses, "Leave Me, allow Me, that My wrath may burn," this is only done, as Gregory the Great expresses it, deprecandi ansam praebere. God puts the fate of the nation into the hand of Moses, that he may remember his mediatorial office, and show himself worthy of his calling. This condescension on the part of God, which placed the preservation or destruction of Israel in the hands of Moses, coupled with a promise, which left the fullest freedom to his decision, viz., that after the destruction of the people he should himself be made a great nation, constituted a great test for Moses, whether he would be willing to give up his own people, laden as they were with guilt, as the price of his own exaltation. And Moses stood the test. The preservation of Israel was dearer to him than the honour of becoming the head and founder of a new kingdom of God. True to his calling as mediator, he entered the breach before God, to turn away His wrath, that He might not destroy the sinful nation (Psa 106:23). - But what if Moses had not stood the test, had not offered his soul for the preservation of his people, as he is said to have done in Exo 32:32? Would God in that case have thought him fit to make into a great nation? Unquestionably, if this had occurred, he would not have proved himself fit or worthy of such a call; but as God does not call those who are fit and worthy in themselves, for the accomplishment of His purposes of salvation, but chooses rather the unworthy, and makes them fit for His purposes (Co2 3:5-6), He might have made even Moses into a great nation. The possibility of such a thing, however, is altogether an abstract thought: the case supposed could not possibly have occurred, since God knows the hearts of His servants, and foresees what they will do, though, notwithstanding His omniscience, He gives to human freedom room enough for self-determination, that He may test the fidelity of His servants. No human speculation, however, can fully explain the conflict between divine providence and human freedom. This promise is referred to by Moses in Deu 9:14, when he adds the words which God made use of on a subsequent occasion of a similar kind (Num 14:12), "I will make of thee a nation stronger and more numerous than this."
Exo 32:11-13
"And Moses besought the Lord his God." יי את־פּני חלּה, lit., to stroke the face of Jehovah, for the purpose of appeasing His anger, i.e., to entreat His mercy, either by means of sacrifices (Sa1 13:12) or by intercession. He pleaded His acts towards Israel (Exo 32:11), His honour in the sight of the Egyptians (Exo 32:12), and the promises He had made to the patriarchs (Exo 32:13), and prayed that for His own sake, and the sake of His honour among the heathen, He would show mercy instead of justice. בּרעה (Exo 32:12) does not mean μετὰ πονεερίας, or callide (Vulg.), but "for their hurt," - the preposition denoting the manner in which, or according to which, anything took place.
Exo 32:14
"And Jehovah repented of the evil, etc." - On the repentance of God, see at Gen 6:6. Augustine is substantially correct in saying that "an unexpected change in the things which God has put in His own power is called repentance" (contra adv. leg. 1, 20), but he has failed to grasp the deep spiritual idea of the repentance of God, as an anthropopathic description of the pain which is caused to the love of God by the destruction of His creatures. - Exo 32:14 contains a remark which anticipates the development of the history, and in which the historian mentions the result of the intercession of Moses, even before Moses had received the assurance of forgiveness, for the purpose of bringing the account of his first negotiations with Jehovah to a close. God let Moses depart without any such assurance, that He might display before the people the full severity of the divine wrath. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Thy people - have corrupted themselves - They had not only got into the spirit of idolatry, but they had become abominable in their conduct, so that God disowns them to be his: Thy people have broken the covenant, and are no longer entitled to my protection and love.
This is one pretense that the Roman Catholics have for the idolatry in their image worship. Their high priest, the pope, collects the ornaments of the people, and makes an image, a crucifix, a madonna, etc. The people worship it; but the pope says it is only to keep God in remembrance. But of the whole God says, Thy people have corrupted themselves; and thus as they continue in their idolatry, they have forfeited the blessings of the Lord's covenant. They are not God's people, they are the pope's people, and he is called "our holy father the pope." |
22 Because all those men [0582] which have seen [07200] my glory [03519], and my miracles [0226], which I did [06213] in Egypt [04714] and in the wilderness [04057], and have tempted [05254] [0853] me now these ten [06235] times [06471], and have not hearkened [08085] to my voice [06963];
23 Surely they shall not [0518] see [07200] the land [0776] which I sware [07650] unto their fathers [01], neither shall any of them that provoked [05006] me see [07200] it:
24 But my servant [05650] Caleb [03612], because [06118] he had another [0312] spirit [07307] with him, and hath followed [0310] me fully [04390], him will I bring [0935] into the land [0776] whereinto he went [0935]; and his seed [02233] shall possess [03423] it.
7 And the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] unto Abram [087], and said [0559], Unto thy seed [02233] will I give [05414] this [02063] land [0776]: and there builded [01129] he an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068], who appeared [07200] unto him.
34 Therefore now go [03212], lead [05148] the people [05971] unto the place of which I have spoken [01696] unto thee: behold, mine Angel [04397] shall go [03212] before [06440] thee: nevertheless in the day [03117] when I visit [06485] I will visit [06485] their sin [02403] upon them.
20 The soul [05315] that sinneth [02398], it shall die [04191]. The son [01121] shall not bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the father [01], neither shall the father [01] bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the son [01121]: the righteousness [06666] of the righteous [06662] shall be upon him, and the wickedness [07564] of the wicked [07563] shall be upon him.
4 Behold, all souls [05315] are mine; as the soul [05315] of the father [01], so also the soul [05315] of the son [01121] is mine: the soul [05315] that sinneth [02398], it shall die [04191].
5 Thou shalt not bow down [07812] thyself to them, nor serve [05647] them: for I the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] am a jealous [07067] God [0410], visiting [06485] the iniquity [05771] of the fathers [01] upon the children [01121] unto the third [08029] and fourth [07256] generation of them that hate [08130] me;
34 Therefore now go [03212], lead [05148] the people [05971] unto the place of which I have spoken [01696] unto thee: behold, mine Angel [04397] shall go [03212] before [06440] thee: nevertheless in the day [03117] when I visit [06485] I will visit [06485] their sin [02403] upon them.
33 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Whosoever [0834] hath sinned [02398] against me, him will I blot out [04229] of my book [05612].
5 He that overcometh [3528], the same [3778] shall be clothed [4016] in [1722] white [3022] raiment [2440]; and [2532] I will [1813] not [3364] blot out [1813] his [846] name [3686] out of [1537] the book [976] of life [2222], but [2532] I will confess [1843] his [846] name [3686] before [1799] my [3450] Father [3962], and [2532] before [1799] his [846] angels [32].
3 And [2532] I intreat [2065] thee [4571] also [2532], true [1103] yokefellow [4805], help [4815] those women [846] which [3748] laboured [4866] with me [3427] in [1722] the gospel [2098], with [3326] Clement [2815] also [2532], and [2532] with other [3062] my [3450] fellowlabourers [4904], whose [3739] names [3686] are in [1722] the book [976] of life [2222].
20 Notwithstanding [4133] in [1722] this [5129] rejoice [5463] not [3361], that [3754] the spirits [4151] are subject [5293] unto you [5213]; but [1161] rather [3123] rejoice [5463], because [3754] your [5216] names [3686] are written [1125] in [1722] heaven [3772].
1 And at that time [06256] shall Michael [04317] stand up [05975], the great [01419] prince [08269] which standeth [05975] for the children [01121] of thy people [05971]: and there shall be [01961] a time [06256] of trouble [06869], such as never was since there was a nation [01471] even to that same time [06256]: and at that time [06256] thy people [05971] shall be delivered [04422], every one that shall be found [04672] written [03789] in the book [05612].
3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left [07604] in Zion [06726], and he that remaineth [03498] in Jerusalem [03389], shall be called [0559] holy [06918], even every one that is written [03789] among the living [02416] in Jerusalem [03389]:
3 For [1063] I [1473] could wish [2172] that myself [846] were [1511] accursed [331] from [575] Christ [5547] for [5228] my [3450] brethren [80], my [3450] kinsmen [4773] according [2596] to the flesh [4561]:
22 What if [1487] [1161] God [2316], willing [2309] to shew [1731] his wrath [3709], and [2532] to make [1107] his [846] power [1415] known [1107], endured [5342] with [1722] much [4183] longsuffering [3115] the vessels [4632] of wrath [3709] fitted [2675] to [1519] destruction [684]:
62 What and [3767] if [1437] ye shall see [2334] the Son [5207] of man [444] ascend up [305] where [3699] he was [2258] before [4386]?
42 Saying [3004], If [3754] [1487] thou hadst known [1097], even [2532] thou [4771], at least [2534] in [1722] this [5026] thy [4675] day [2250], the things [3588] which belong unto [4314] thy [4675] peace [1515]! but [1161] now [3568] they are hid [2928] from [575] thine [4675] eyes [3788].
9 And if [2579] [3303] it bear [4160] fruit [2590], well: and if not [1490], then after that [1519] [3195] thou shalt cut [1581] it [846] down [1581].
15 Now [03705] if [02006] ye be [0383] ready [06263] that at what time [05732] ye hear [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], and dulcimer [05481], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], ye fall down [05308] and worship [05457] the image [06755] which I have made [05648]; well: but if [02006] ye worship [05457] not [03809], ye shall be cast [07412] the same hour [08160] into the midst [01459] of a burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861]; and who [04479] is that God [0426] that shall deliver [07804] you out of [04481] my hands [03028]?
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive [05375] their sin [02403]--; and if not, blot [04229] me, I pray thee, out of thy book [05612] which thou hast written [03789].
31 And Moses [04872] returned [07725] unto the LORD [03068], and said [0559], Oh [0577], this people [05971] have sinned [02398] a great [01419] sin [02401], and have made [06213] them gods [0430] of gold [02091].
8 At that time [06256] the LORD [03068] separated [0914] the tribe [07626] of Levi [03878], to bear [05375] the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068], to stand [05975] before [06440] the LORD [03068] to minister [08334] unto him, and to bless [01288] in his name [08034], unto this day [03117].
29 For Moses [04872] had said [0559], Consecrate yourselves [04390] [03027] to day [03117] to the LORD [03068], even [03588] every man [0376] upon his son [01121], and upon his brother [0251]; that he may bestow [05414] upon you a blessing [01293] this day [03117].
26 Then Moses [04872] stood [05975] in the gate [08179] of the camp [04264], and said [0559], Who is on the LORD'S [03068] side? let him come unto me. And all the sons [01121] of Levi [03878] gathered [0622] themselves together unto him.
27 And he said [0559] unto them, Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478], Put [07760] every man [0376] his sword [02719] by his side [03409], and go [05674] in and out [07725] from gate [08179] to gate [08179] throughout the camp [04264], and slay [02026] every man [0376] his brother [0251], and every man [0376] his companion [07453], and every man [0376] his neighbour [07138].
28 And the children [01121] of Levi [03878] did [06213] according to the word [01697] of Moses [04872]: and there fell [05307] of the people [05971] that day [03117] about three [07969] thousand [0505] men [0376].
37 And thou shalt become an astonishment [08047], a proverb [04912], and a byword [08148], among all nations [05971] whither the LORD [03068] shall lead [05090] thee.
4 We are become a reproach [02781] to our neighbours [07934], a scorn [03933] and derision [07047] to them that are round about [05439] us.
13 Thou makest [07760] us a reproach [02781] to our neighbours [07934], a scorn [03933] and a derision [07047] to them that are round about [05439] us.
25 And when Moses [04872] saw [07200] that the people [05971] were naked [06544]; (for Aaron [0175] had made them naked [06544] unto their shame [08103] among their enemies [06965]
23 For they said [0559] unto me, Make [06213] us gods [0430], which shall go [03212] before [06440] us: for as for this Moses [04872], the man [0376] that brought us up [05927] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], we wot [03045] not what is become of him.
22 And Aaron [0175] said [0559], Let not the anger [0639] of my lord [0113] wax hot [02734]: thou knowest [03045] the people [05971], that they are set on mischief [07451].
13 Notwithstanding the land [0776] shall be desolate [08077] because of them that dwell [03427] therein, for the fruit [06529] of their doings [04611].
14 Feed [07462] thy people [05971] with thy rod [07626], the flock [06629] of thine heritage [05159], which dwell [07931] solitarily [0910] in the wood [03293], in the midst [08432] of Carmel [03760]: let them feed [07462] in Bashan [01316] and Gilead [01568], as in the days [03117] of old [05769].
21 And I took [03947] your sin [02403], the calf [05695] which ye had made [06213], and burnt [08313] it with fire [0784], and stamped [03807] it, and ground [02912] it very small [03190], even until it was as small [01854] as dust [06083]: and I cast [07993] the dust [06083] thereof into the brook [05158] that descended out [03381] of the mount [02022].
20 And he took [03947] the calf [05695] which they had made [06213], and burnt [08313] it in the fire [0784], and ground [02912] it to powder [01854], and strawed [02219] it upon [06440] the water [04325], and made the children [01121] of Israel [03478] drink [08248] of it.
19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh [07126] unto the camp [04264], that he saw [07200] the calf [05695], and the dancing [04246]: and Moses [04872]' anger [0639] waxed hot [02734], and he cast [07993] the tables [03871] out of his hands [03027], and brake [07665] them beneath [08478] the mount [02022].
17 And when Joshua [03091] heard [08085] the noise [06963] of the people [05971] as they shouted [07452], he said [0559] unto Moses [04872], There is a noise [06963] of war [04421] in the camp [04264].
18 And he said [0559], It is not the voice [06963] of them that shout [06030] for mastery [01369], neither is it the voice [06963] of them that cry [06030] for being overcome [02476]: but the noise [06963] of them that sing [06031] do I hear [08085].
35 And Samuel [08050] came no more [03254] to see [07200] Saul [07586] until the day [03117] of his death [04194]: nevertheless [03588] Samuel [08050] mourned [056] for Saul [07586]: and the LORD [03068] repented [05162] that he had made Saul [07586] king [04427] over Israel [03478].
6 And it repented [05162] the LORD [03068] that he had made [06213] man [0120] on the earth [0776], and it grieved [06087] him at [0413] his heart [03820].
10 And God [0430] saw [07200] their works [04639], that they turned [07725] from their evil [07451] way [01870]; and God [0430] repented [05162] of the evil [07451], that he had said [01696] that he would do [06213] unto them; and he did [06213] it not.
13 And rend [07167] your heart [03824], and not your garments [0899], and turn [07725] unto the LORD [03068] your God [0430]: for he is gracious [02587] and merciful [07349], slow [0750] to anger [0639], and of great [07227] kindness [02617], and repenteth [05162] him of the evil [07451].
16 And when the angel [04397] stretched out [07971] his hand [03027] upon Jerusalem [03389] to destroy [07843] it, the LORD [03068] repented [05162] him of the evil [07451], and said [0559] to the angel [04397] that destroyed [07843] the people [05971], It is enough [07227]: stay [07503] now thine hand [03027]. And the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] was by the threshingplace [01637] of Araunah [0728] the Jebusite [02983].
30 And it came to pass on the morrow [04283], that Moses [04872] said [0559] unto the people [05971], Ye have sinned [02398] a great [01419] sin [02401]: and now I will go up [05927] unto the LORD [03068]; peradventure [0194] I shall make an atonement [03722] for [01157] your sin [02403].
31 And Moses [04872] returned [07725] unto the LORD [03068], and said [0559], Oh [0577], this people [05971] have sinned [02398] a great [01419] sin [02401], and have made [06213] them gods [0430] of gold [02091].
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive [05375] their sin [02403]--; and if not, blot [04229] me, I pray thee, out of thy book [05612] which thou hast written [03789].
33 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Whosoever [0834] hath sinned [02398] against me, him will I blot out [04229] of my book [05612].
14 And the LORD [03068] repented [05162] of the evil [07451] which he thought [01696] to do [06213] unto his people [05971].
24 And Jacob [03290] was left [03498] alone; and there wrestled [079] a man [0376] with him until the breaking [05927] of the day [07837].
25 And when he saw [07200] that he prevailed [03201] not against him, he touched [05060] the hollow of his thigh [03409]; and the hollow [03709] of Jacob's [03290] thigh [03409] was out of joint [03363], as he wrestled [079] with him.
26 And he said [0559], Let me go [07971], for the day [07837] breaketh [05927]. And he said [0559], I will not let thee go [07971], except [0518] thou bless [01288] me.
27 And he said [0559] unto him, What is thy name [08034]? And he said [0559], Jacob [03290].
28 And he said [0559], Thy name [08034] shall be called [0559] no more Jacob [03290], but Israel [03478]: for as a prince hast thou power [08280] with God [0430] and with men [0582], and hast prevailed [03201].
29 And Jacob [03290] asked [07592] him, and said [0559], Tell [05046] me, I pray thee, thy name [08034]. And he said [0559], Wherefore is it [02088] that thou dost ask [07592] after my name [08034]? And he blessed [01288] him there.
10 Now therefore let me alone [03240], that my wrath [0639] may wax hot [02734] against them, and that I may consume [03615] them: and I will make [06213] of thee a great [01419] nation [01471].
8 They have turned [05493] aside quickly [04118] out of the way [01870] which I commanded [06680] them: they have made [06213] them a molten [04541] calf [05695], and have worshipped [07812] it, and have sacrificed [02076] thereunto, and said [0559], These be thy gods [0430], O Israel [03478], which have brought thee up [05927] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
8 Again [3825], the devil [1228] taketh [3880] him [846] up [3880] into [1519] an exceeding [3029] high [5308] mountain [3735], and [2532] sheweth [1166] him [846] all [3956] the kingdoms [932] of the world [2889], and [2532] the glory [1391] of them [846];
9 And [2532] saith [3004] unto him [846], All [3956] these things [5023] will I give [1325] thee [4671], if [1437] thou wilt fall down [4098] and worship [4352] me [3427].
10 Then [5119] saith [3004] Jesus [2424] unto him [846], Get thee hence [5217], Satan [4567]: for [1063] it is written [1125], Thou shalt worship [4352] the Lord [2962] thy [4675] God [2316], and [2532] him [846] only [3441] shalt thou serve [3000].
11 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], How long will this people [05971] provoke [05006] me? and how long will it be ere [03808] they believe [0539] me, for all the signs [0226] which I have shewed [06213] among [07130] them?
12 I will smite [05221] them with the pestilence [01698], and disinherit [03423] them, and will make [06213] of thee a greater [01419] nation [01471] and mightier [06099] than they.
13 And Moses [04872] said [0559] unto the LORD [03068], Then the Egyptians [04714] shall hear [08085] it, (for thou broughtest up [05927] this people [05971] in thy might [03581] from among [07130] them;)
14 And they will tell [0559] it to the inhabitants [03427] of this land [0776]: for they have heard [08085] that thou LORD [03068] art among [07130] this people [05971], that thou LORD [03068] art seen [07200] face [05869] to face [05869], and that thy cloud [06051] standeth [05975] over them, and that thou goest [01980] before [06440] them, by day time [03119] in a pillar [05982] of a cloud [06051], and in a pillar [05982] of fire [0784] by night [03915].
15 Now if thou shalt kill [04191] all this people [05971] as one [0259] man [0376], then the nations [01471] which have heard [08085] the fame [08088] of thee will speak [0559], saying [0559],
16 Because the LORD [03068] was not [01115] able [03201] to bring [0935] this people [05971] into the land [0776] which he sware [07650] unto them, therefore he hath slain [07819] them in the wilderness [04057].
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power [03581] of my Lord [0136] be great [01431], according [0834] as thou hast spoken [01696], saying [0559],
18 The LORD [03068] is longsuffering [0750] [0639], and of great [07227] mercy [02617], forgiving [05375] iniquity [05771] and transgression [06588], and by no means [05352] clearing [05352] the guilty, visiting [06485] the iniquity [05771] of the fathers [01] upon the children [01121] unto the third [08029] and fourth [07256] generation.
19 Pardon [05545], I beseech thee, the iniquity [05771] of this people [05971] according unto the greatness [01433] of thy mercy [02617], and as thou hast forgiven [05375] this people [05971], from Egypt [04714] even until now [02008].
20 And the LORD [03068] said [0559], I have pardoned [05545] according to thy word [01697]:
21 But as truly [0199] as I live [02416], all the earth [0776] shall be filled [04390] with the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068].
22 Because all those men [0582] which have seen [07200] my glory [03519], and my miracles [0226], which I did [06213] in Egypt [04714] and in the wilderness [04057], and have tempted [05254] [0853] me now these ten [06235] times [06471], and have not hearkened [08085] to my voice [06963];
23 Surely they shall not [0518] see [07200] the land [0776] which I sware [07650] unto their fathers [01], neither shall any of them that provoked [05006] me see [07200] it:
11 And Moses [04872] said [0559] unto God [0430], Who am I, that I should go [03212] unto Pharaoh [06547], and that I should bring forth [03318] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] out of Egypt [04714]?
3 (Now the man [0376] Moses [04872] was very [03966] meek [06035] [06035], above all the men [0120] which were upon the face [06440] of the earth [0127].)
14 And the LORD [03068] repented [05162] of the evil [07451] which he thought [01696] to do [06213] unto his people [05971].
6 And it repented [05162] the LORD [03068] that he had made [06213] man [0120] on the earth [0776], and it grieved [06087] him at [0413] his heart [03820].
14 And the LORD [03068] repented [05162] of the evil [07451] which he thought [01696] to do [06213] unto his people [05971].
12 Wherefore should the Egyptians [04714] speak [0559], and say [0559], For mischief [07451] did he bring [03318] them out, to slay [02026] them in the mountains [02022], and to consume [03615] them from the face [06440] of the earth [0127]? Turn [07725] from thy fierce [02740] wrath [0639], and repent [05162] of this evil [07451] against thy people [05971].
13 Remember [02142] Abraham [085], Isaac [03327], and Israel [03478], thy servants [05650], to whom thou swarest [07650] by thine own self, and saidst [01696] unto them, I will multiply [07235] your seed [02233] as the stars [03556] of heaven [08064], and all this land [0776] that I have spoken [0559] of will I give [05414] unto your seed [02233], and they shall inherit [05157] it for ever [05769].
11 And Moses [04872] besought [02470] [06440] the LORD [03068] his God [0430], and said [0559], LORD [03068], why doth thy wrath [0639] wax hot [02734] against thy people [05971], which thou hast brought forth [03318] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] with great [01419] power [03581], and with a mighty [02389] hand [03027]?
12 Therefore said [0559] I, The Philistines [06430] will come down [03381] now upon me to Gilgal [01537], and I have not made supplication [02470] unto [06440] the LORD [03068]: I forced [0662] myself therefore, and offered [05927] a burnt offering [05930].
12 I will smite [05221] them with the pestilence [01698], and disinherit [03423] them, and will make [06213] of thee a greater [01419] nation [01471] and mightier [06099] than they.
14 Let me alone [07503], that I may destroy [08045] them, and blot out [04229] their name [08034] from under heaven [08064]: and I will make [06213] of [0854] thee a nation [01471] mightier [06099] and greater [07227] than they.
5 Not [3756] that [3754] we are [2070] sufficient [2425] of [575] ourselves [1438] to think [3049] any thing [5100] as [5613] of [1537] ourselves [1438]; but [235] our [2257] sufficiency [2426] is of [1537] God [2316];
6 Who [3739] also [2532] hath made [2427] us [2248] able [2427] ministers [1249] of the new [2537] testament [1242]; not [3756] of the letter [1121], but [235] of the spirit [4151]: for [1063] the letter [1121] killeth [615], but [1161] the spirit [4151] giveth life [2227].
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive [05375] their sin [02403]--; and if not, blot [04229] me, I pray thee, out of thy book [05612] which thou hast written [03789].
23 Therefore he said [0559] that he would destroy [08045] them, had not [03884] Moses [04872] his chosen [0972] stood [05975] before [06440] him in the breach [06556], to turn away [07725] his wrath [02534], lest he should destroy [07843] them.
2 And I will make of thee [06213] a great [01419] nation [01471], and I will bless [01288] thee, and make [01431] thy name [08034] great [01431]; and thou shalt be a blessing [01293]:
6 Understand [03045] therefore, that the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] giveth [05414] thee not this good [02896] land [0776] to possess [03423] it for thy righteousness [06666]; for thou art a stiffnecked [06203] [07186] people [05971].
9 And he said [0559], If now I have found [04672] grace [02580] in thy sight [05869], O Lord [0136], let my Lord [0136], I pray thee, go [03212] among [07130] us; for it is a stiffnecked [07186] [06203] people [05971]; and pardon [05545] our iniquity [05771] and our sin [02403], and take us for thine inheritance [05157].
5 For the LORD [03068] had said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Say [0559] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], Ye are a stiffnecked [07186] [06203] people [05971]: I will come up [05927] into the midst [07130] of thee in a [0259] moment [07281], and consume [03615] thee: therefore now put off [03381] thy ornaments [05716] from thee, that I may know [03045] what to do [06213] unto thee.
3 Unto a land [0776] flowing [02100] with milk [02461] and honey [01706]: for I will not go up [05927] in the midst [07130] of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked [07186] [06203] people [05971]: lest I consume [03615] thee in the way [01870].
9 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], I have seen [07200] this people [05971], and, behold, it is a stiffnecked [07186] [06203] people [05971]:
7 And the LORD [03068] said [01696] unto Moses [04872], Go [03212], get thee down [03381]; for thy people [05971], which thou broughtest [05927] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], have corrupted [07843] themselves:
