A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
roast with fire--for the sake of expedition; and this difference was always observed between the cooking of the paschal lamb and the other offerings (Ch2 35:13).

unleavened bread--also for the sake of despatch (Deu 16:3), but as a kind of corruption (Luk 12:1) there seems to have been a typical meaning under it (Co1 5:8).

bitter herbs--literally, "bitters"--to remind the Israelites of their affliction in Egypt, and morally of the trials to which God's people are subject on account of sin.

8 Therefore [5620] let us keep the feast [1858], not [3361] with [1722] old [3820] leaven [2219], neither [3366] with [1722] the leaven [2219] of malice [2549] and [2532] wickedness [4189]; but [235] with [1722] the unleavened [106] bread of sincerity [1505] and [2532] truth [225].
1 In [1722] the mean time [3739], when there were gathered together [1996] an innumerable multitude [3461] of people [3793], insomuch that [5620] they trode [2662] one upon another [240], he began [756] to say [3004] unto [4314] his [846] disciples [3101] first of all [4412], Beware [4337] ye [1438] of [575] the leaven [2219] of the Pharisees [5330], which [3748] is [2076] hypocrisy [5272].
3 Thou shalt eat [0398] no leavened bread [02557] with it; seven [07651] days [03117] shalt thou eat [0398] unleavened bread [04682] therewith, even the bread [03899] of affliction [06040]; for thou camest forth [03318] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] in haste [02649]: that thou mayest remember [02142] the day [03117] when thou camest forth [03318] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] all the days [03117] of thy life [02416].
13 And they roasted [01310] the passover [06453] with fire [0784] according to the ordinance [04941]: but the other holy [06944] offerings sod [01310] they in pots [05518], and in caldrons [01731], and in pans [06745], and divided them speedily [07323] among all the people [01121] [05971].
11 The fourteenth [0702] [06240] day [03117] of the second [08145] month [02320] at even [06153] they shall keep [06213] it, and eat [0398] it with unleavened bread [04682] and bitter [04844] herbs.
12 Then [5119] understood they [4920] how that [3754] he bade [2036] them not [3756] beware [4337] of [575] the leaven [2219] of bread [740], but [235] of [575] the doctrine [1322] of the Pharisees [5330] and [2532] of the Sadducees [4523].
6 Then [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto them [846], Take heed [3708] and [2532] beware [4337] of [575] the leaven [2219] of the Pharisees [5330] and [2532] of the Sadducees [4523].
7 Purge out [1571] therefore [3767] the old [3820] leaven [2219], that [2443] ye may be [5600] a new [3501] lump [5445], as [2531] ye are [2075] unleavened [106]. For [1063] even [2532] Christ [5547] our [2257] passover [3957] is sacrificed [2380] for [5228] us [2257]:
8 Therefore [5620] let us keep the feast [1858], not [3361] with [1722] old [3820] leaven [2219], neither [3366] with [1722] the leaven [2219] of malice [2549] and [2532] wickedness [4189]; but [235] with [1722] the unleavened [106] bread of sincerity [1505] and [2532] truth [225].
4 And Abel [01893], he [01931] also brought [0935] of the firstlings [01062] of his flock [06629] and of the fat [02459] thereof. And the LORD [03068] had respect [08159] unto Abel [01893] and to his offering [04503]:
6 Your [5216] glorying [2745] is not [3756] good [2570]. Know ye [1492] not [3756] that [3754] a little [3398] leaven [2219] leaveneth [2220] the whole [3650] lump [5445]?
