tent . . . placed--literally, "caused to dwell," set up (Jos 18:1). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh - The tabernacle or tent which had been erected at Shiloh. He forsook that as a place where he was to be worshipped; that is, he caused his tabernacle, or his place of worship, to be erected in another place, to wit, on Mount Zion. See Psa 78:68. The name Shiloh means properly a place of rest, and seems to have been given to this place as such a place, or as a place where the ark might abide after its migrations. Shiloh was a city within the limits of the tribe of Ephraim, on a mountain north of Bethel. Here the ark of God remained for many years after it came into the promised land. Jos 18:1; Jdg 18:31; Jdg 21:12, Jdg 21:19; Sa1 1:3, Sa1 1:24; Sa1 2:14; Sa1 4:3-4. The ark, after it was taken by the Philistines, was never returned to Shiloh, but was deposited successively at Nob Sa1 21:1-6, and at Gibeon Kg1 3:4, until David pitched a tabernacle for it on Mount Zion Ch1 15:1. The meaning here is, that in consequence of the sins of the people, the place of worship was finally and forever removed from the tribe of Ephraim, within whose limits Shiloh was, to the tribe of Judah, and to Mount Zion.
The tent which he placed among men - It was the place which he selected as his abode on earth. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The rejection of Shiloh and of the people worshipping there, but later on, when the God of Israel is again overwhelmed by compassion, the election of Judah, and of Mount Zion, and of David, the king after His own heart. In the time of the Judges the Tabernacle was set up in Shiloh (Jos 18:1); there, consequently, was the central sanctuary of the whole people, - in the time of Eli and Samuel, as follows from Sa1 1:1, it had become a fixed temple building. When this building was destroyed is not known; according to Jdg 18:30., cf. Jer 7:12-15, it was probably not until the Assyrian period. The rejection of Shiloh, however, preceded the destruction, and practically took place simultaneously with the removal of the central sanctuary to Zion; and was, moreover, even previously decided by the fact that the Ark of the covenant, when given up again by the Philistines, was not brought back to Shiloh, but set down in Kirjath Jearm (Sa1 7:2). The attributive clause שׁכּן בּאדם uses שׁכּן as השׁכּין is used in Jos 18:1. The pointing is correct, for the words to not suffice to signify "where He dwelleth among men" (Hitzig); consequently שׁכּן is the causative of the Kal, Lev 16:16; Jos 22:19. In Psa 78:61 the Ark of the covenant is called the might and glory of God (ארון עזּו, Psa 132:8, cf. כבוד, Sa1 4:21.), as being the place of their presence in Israel and the medium of their revelation. Nevertheless, in the battle with the Philistines between Eben-ezer and Aphek, Jahve gave the Ark, which they had fetched out of Shiloh, into the hands of the foe in order to visit on the high-priesthood of the sons of Ithamar the desecration of His ordinances, and there fell in that battle 30,000 footmen, and among them the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests (1 Sam. 4). The fire in Psa 78:63 is the fire of war, as in Num 21:28, and frequently. The incident mentioned in Sa1 6:19 is reasonably (vid., Keil) left out of consideration. By לא הוּלּלוּ (lxx erroneously, οὐκ ἐπένθησαν = הוללוּ = הילילוּ) are meant the marriage-songs (cf. Talmudic הלּוּלא, the nuptial tent, and בּית הלוּלים the marriage-house). "Its widows (of the people, in fact, of the slain) weep not" (word for word as in Job 27:15) is meant of the celebration of the customary ceremony of mourning (Gen 23:2): they survive their husbands (which, with the exception of such a case as that recorded in Sa1 14:19-22, is presupposed), but without being able to show them the last signs of honour, because the terrors of the war (Jer 15:8) prevent them.
With Psa 78:65 the song takes a new turn. After the punitive judgment has sifted and purified Israel, God receives His people to Himself afresh, but in such a manner that He transfers the precedence of Ephraim to the tribe of Judah. He awakes as it were from a long sleep (Psa 44:24, cf. Psa 73:20); for He seemed to sleep whilst Israel had become a servant to the heathen; He aroused Himself, like a hero exulting by reason of wine, i.e., like a hero whose courage is heightened by the strengthening and exhilarating influence of wine (Hengstenberg). התרונן is not the Hithpal. of רוּן in the Arabic signification, which is alien to the Hebrew, to conquer, a meaning which we do not need here, and which is also not adapted to the reflexive form (Hitzig, without any precedent, renders thus: who allows himself to be conquered by wine), but Hithpo. of רנן: to shout most heartily, after the analogy of the reflexives התאונן, התנודד, התרועע. The most recent defeat of the enemy which the poet has before his mind is that of the Philistines. The form of expression in Psa 78:66 is moulded after Sa1 5:6. God smote the Philistines most literally in posteriora (lxx, Vulgate, and Luther). Nevertheless Psa 78:66 embraces all the victories under Samuel, Saul, and David, from Sa1 5:1-12 and onwards. Now, when they were able to bring the Ark, which had been brought down to the battle against the Philistines, to a settled resting-place again, God no longer chose Shiloh of Ephraim, but Judah and the mountain of Zion, which He had loved (Psa 47:5), of Benjamitish-Judaean (Jos 15:63; Jdg 1:8, Jdg 1:21) - but according to the promise (Deu 33:12) and according to the distribution of the country (vid., on Psa 68:28) Benjamitish - Jerusalem.
(Note: According to B. Menachoth 53b, Jedidiah (Solomon, Sa2 12:25) built the Temple in the province of Jedidiah (of Benjamin, Deu 33:12).)
There God built His Temple כּמו־רמים. Hitzig proposes instead of this to read כּמרומים; but if נעימים, Psa 16:6, signifies amaena, then רמים may signify excelsa (cf. Isa 45:2 הדוּרים, Jer 17:6 חררים) and be poetically equivalent to מרומים: lasting as the heights of heaven, firm as the earth, which He hath founded for ever. Since the eternal duration of heaven and of the earth is quite consistent with a radical change in the manner of its duration, and that not less in the sense of the Old Testament than of the New (vid., e.g., Isa 65:17), so the לעולם applies not to the stone building, but rather to the place where Jahve reveals Himself, and to the promise that He will have such a dwelling-place in Israel, and in fact in Judah. Regarded spiritually, i.e., essentially, apart from the accidental mode of appearing, the Temple upon Zion is as eternal as the kingship upon Zion with which the Psalm closes. The election of David gives its impress to the history of salvation even on into eternity. It is genuinely Asaphic that it is so designedly portrayed how the shepherd of the flock of Jesse (Isai) became the shepherd of the flock of Jahve, who was not to pasture old and young in Israel with the same care and tenderness as the ewe-lambs after which he went (עלות as in Gen 33:13, and רעה ב, cf. Sa1 16:11; Sa1 17:34, like משׁל בּ and the like). The poet is also able already to glory that he has fulfilled this vocation with a pure heart and with an intelligent mastery. And with this he closes.
From the decease of David lyric and prophecy are retrospectively and prospectively turned towards David. |

Shiloh - Which was placed in Shiloh. Among men - Whereby he insinuates both God's wonderful condescension, and their stupendous folly in despising so glorious a privilege. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh - The Lord, offended with the people, and principally with the priests, who had profaned his holy worship, gave up his ark into the hands of the Philistines. And so true it is that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, that he never returned to it again. See Sa1 6:1; 2 Samuel 6; Kg1 8:1; where the several removals of the ark are spoken of, and which explain the remaining part of this Psalm. Because God suffered the Philistines to take the ark, it is said, Psa 78:61 : "He delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand;" and Psa 78:67, that "he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim;" for Shiloh was in the tribe of Ephraim the son of Joseph; and God did not suffer his ark to return thither, but to go to Kirjath-jearim, which was in the tribe of Benjamin, from thence to the house of Obed-edom: and so to Zion in the tribe of Judah, as it follows, Psa 78:68.
The tabernacle which Moses had constructed in the wilderness remained at Shiloh even after the ark was taken by the Philistines and afterwards sent to Kirjath-jearim. From Shiloh it was transported to Nob; afterwards to Gibeon, apparently under the reign of Saul; and it was there at the commencement of Solomon's reign, for this prince went thither to offer sacrifices, Kg1 3:4. From the time in which the temple was built, we know not what became of the tabernacle of Moses: it was probably laid up in some of the chambers of the temple. See Calmet. |
1 And the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] assembled together [06950] at Shiloh [07887], and set up [07931] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] there. And the land [0776] was subdued [03533] before [06440] them.
1 And David made [06213] him houses [01004] in the city [05892] of David [01732], and prepared [03559] a place [04725] for the ark [0727] of God [0430], and pitched [05186] for it a tent [0168].
4 And the king [04428] went [03212] to Gibeon [01391] to sacrifice [02076] there; for that [01931] was the great [01419] high place [01116]: a thousand [0505] burnt offerings [05930] did Solomon [08010] offer [05927] upon that altar [04196].
1 Then came [0935] David [01732] to Nob [05011] to Ahimelech [0288] the priest [03548]: and Ahimelech [0288] was afraid [02729] at the meeting [07125] of David [01732], and said [0559] unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man [0376] with thee?
2 And David [01732] said [0559] unto Ahimelech [0288] the priest [03548], The king [04428] hath commanded [06680] me a business [01697], and hath said [0559] unto me, Let no man [0376] know [03045] any thing [03972] of the business [01697] whereabout I send [07971] thee, and what I have commanded [06680] thee: and I have appointed [03045] my servants [05288] to such [06423] and such [0492] a place [04725].
3 Now therefore what is [03426] under thine hand [03027]? give [05414] me five [02568] loaves of bread [03899] in mine hand [03027], or what there is present [04672].
4 And the priest [03548] answered [06030] David [01732], and said [0559], There is no common [02455] bread [03899] under mine hand [03027], but there is [03426] hallowed [06944] bread [03899]; if the young men [05288] have kept [08104] themselves at least [0389] from women [0802].
5 And David [01732] answered [06030] the priest [03548], and said [0559] unto him, Of a truth [0518] women [0802] have been kept [06113] from us about these three [08032] days [08543], since I came out [03318], and the vessels [03627] of the young men [05288] are holy [06944], and the bread is in a manner [01870] common [02455], yea, though it were sanctified [06942] this day [03117] in the vessel [03627].
6 So the priest [03548] gave [05414] him hallowed [06944] bread: for there was no bread [03899] there but the shewbread [03899] [06440], that was taken [05493] from before [06440] the LORD [03068], to put [07760] hot [02527] bread [03899] in the day [03117] when it was taken away [03947].
3 And when the people [05971] were come [0935] into the camp [04264], the elders [02205] of Israel [03478] said [0559], Wherefore hath the LORD [03068] smitten [05062] us to day [03117] before [06440] the Philistines [06430]? Let us fetch [03947] the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] out of Shiloh [07887] unto us, that, when it cometh [0935] among [07130] us, it may save [03467] us out of the hand [03709] of our enemies [0341].
4 So the people [05971] sent [07971] to Shiloh [07887], that they might bring [05375] from thence the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], which dwelleth [03427] between the cherubims [03742]: and the two [08147] sons [01121] of Eli [05941], Hophni [02652] and Phinehas [06372], were there with the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of God [0430].
14 And he struck [05221] it into the pan [03595], or kettle [01731], or caldron [07037], or pot [06517]; all that the fleshhook [04207] brought up [05927] the priest [03548] took [03947] for himself. So they did [06213] in Shiloh [07887] unto all the Israelites [03478] that came [0935] thither.
24 And when she had weaned [01580] him, she took him up [05927] with her, with three [07969] bullocks [06499], and one [0259] ephah [0374] of flour [07058], and a bottle [05035] of wine [03196], and brought [0935] him unto the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] in Shiloh [07887]: and the child [05288] was young [05288].
3 And this [01931] man [0376] went up [05927] out of his city [05892] yearly [03117] [03117] to worship [07812] and to sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] in Shiloh [07887]. And the two [08147] sons [01121] of Eli [05941], Hophni [02652] and Phinehas [06372], the priests [03548] of the LORD [03068], were there.
19 Then they said [0559], Behold, there is a feast [02282] of the LORD [03068] in Shiloh [07887] yearly [03117] [03117] in a place which is on the north side [06828] of Bethel [01008], on the east side [04217] [08121] of the highway [04546] that goeth up [05927] from Bethel [01008] to Shechem [07927], and on the south [05045] of Lebonah [03829].
12 And they found [04672] among the inhabitants [03427] of Jabeshgilead [03003] [01568] four [0702] hundred [03967] young [05291] virgins [01330], that had known [03045] no man [0376] by lying [04904] with any male [02145]: and they brought [0935] them unto the camp [04264] to Shiloh [07887], which is in the land [0776] of Canaan [03667].
31 And they set them up [07760] Micah's [04318] graven image [06459], which he made [06213], all the time [03117] that the house [01004] of God [0430] was in Shiloh [07887].
1 And the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] assembled together [06950] at Shiloh [07887], and set up [07931] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] there. And the land [0776] was subdued [03533] before [06440] them.
68 But chose [0977] the tribe [07626] of Judah [03063], the mount [02022] Zion [06726] which he loved [0157].
34 And David [01732] said [0559] unto Saul [07586], Thy servant [05650] kept [07462] his father's [01] sheep [06629], and there came [0935] a lion [0738], and a bear [01677], and took [05375] a lamb [07716] [02089] out of the flock [05739]:
11 And Samuel [08050] said [0559] unto Jesse [03448], Are here all [08552] thy children [05288]? And he said [0559], There remaineth [07604] yet the youngest [06996], and, behold, he keepeth [07462] the sheep [06629]. And Samuel [08050] said [0559] unto Jesse [03448], Send [07971] and fetch [03947] him: for we will not sit down [05437] till he come [0935] hither [06311].
13 And he said [0559] unto him, My lord [0113] knoweth [03045] that the children [03206] are tender [07390], and the flocks [06629] and herds [01241] with young [05763] are with me: and if men should overdrive [01849] them one [0259] day [03117], all the flock [06629] will die [04191].
17 For, behold, I create [01254] new [02319] heavens [08064] and a new [02319] earth [0776]: and the former [07223] shall not be remembered [02142], nor come [05927] into mind [03820].
6 For he shall be like the heath [06199] in the desert [06160], and shall not see [07200] when good [02896] cometh [0935]; but shall inhabit [07931] the parched places [02788] in the wilderness [04057], in a salt [04420] land [0776] and not inhabited [03427].
2 I will go [03212] before [06440] thee, and make [03474] the crooked places [01921] straight [03474] [03474]: I will break in pieces [07665] the gates [01817] of brass [05154], and cut in sunder [01438] the bars [01280] of iron [01270]:
6 The lines [02256] are fallen [05307] unto me in pleasant [05273] places; yea, I have a goodly [08231] heritage [05159].
12 And of Benjamin [01144] he said [0559], The beloved [03039] of the LORD [03068] shall dwell [07931] in safety [0983] by him; and the LORD shall cover [02653] him all the day [03117] long, and he shall dwell [07931] between his shoulders [03802].
25 And he sent [07971] by the hand [03027] of Nathan [05416] the prophet [05030]; and he called [07121] his name [08034] Jedidiah [03041], because of the LORD [03068].
28 Thy God [0430] hath commanded [06680] thy strength [05797]: strengthen [05810], O God [0430], that which [02098] thou hast wrought [06466] for us.
12 And of Benjamin [01144] he said [0559], The beloved [03039] of the LORD [03068] shall dwell [07931] in safety [0983] by him; and the LORD shall cover [02653] him all the day [03117] long, and he shall dwell [07931] between his shoulders [03802].
21 And the children [01121] of Benjamin [01144] did not drive out [03423] the Jebusites [02983] that inhabited [03427] Jerusalem [03389]; but the Jebusites [02983] dwell [03427] with the children [01121] of Benjamin [01144] in Jerusalem [03389] unto this day [03117].
8 Now the children [01121] of Judah [03063] had fought [03898] against Jerusalem [03389], and had taken [03920] it, and smitten [05221] it with the edge [06310] of the sword [02719], and set [07971] the city [05892] on fire [0784].
63 As for the Jebusites [02983] the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389], the children [01121] of Judah [03063] could [03201] [03201] not drive them out [03423]: but the Jebusites [02983] dwell [03427] with the children [01121] of Judah [03063] at Jerusalem [03389] unto this day [03117].
5 God [0430] is gone up [05927] with a shout [08643], the LORD [03068] with the sound [06963] of a trumpet [07782].
1 And the Philistines [06430] took [03947] the ark [0727] of God [0430], and brought [0935] it from Ebenezer [072] unto Ashdod [0795].
2 When the Philistines [06430] took [03947] the ark [0727] of God [0430], they brought [0935] it into the house [01004] of Dagon [01712], and set [03322] it by [0681] Dagon [01712].
3 And when they of Ashdod [0796] arose early [07925] on the morrow [04283], behold, Dagon [01712] was fallen [05307] upon his face [06440] to the earth [0776] before [06440] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068]. And they took [03947] Dagon [01712], and set [07725] him in his place [04725] again [07725].
4 And when they arose early [07925] on the morrow [04283] morning [01242], behold, Dagon [01712] was fallen [05307] upon his face [06440] to the ground [0776] before [06440] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068]; and the head [07218] of Dagon [01712] and both [08147] the palms [03709] of his hands [03027] were cut off [03772] upon the threshold [04670]; only the stump of Dagon [01712] was left [07604] to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests [03548] of Dagon [01712], nor any that come [0935] into Dagon's [01712] house [01004], tread [01869] on the threshold [04670] of Dagon [01712] in Ashdod [0795] unto this day [03117].
6 But the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068] was heavy [03513] upon them of Ashdod [0796], and he destroyed [08074] them, and smote [05221] them with emerods [02914] [06076], even Ashdod [0795] and the coasts [01366] thereof.
7 And when the men [0582] of Ashdod [0795] saw [07200] that it was so, they said [0559], The ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478] shall not abide [03427] with us: for his hand [03027] is sore [07185] upon us, and upon Dagon [01712] our god [0430].
8 They sent [07971] therefore and gathered [0622] all the lords [05633] of the Philistines [06430] unto them, and said [0559], What shall we do [06213] with the ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478]? And they answered [0559], Let the ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478] be carried about [05437] unto Gath [01661]. And they carried [05437] the ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478] about [05437] thither.
9 And it was so, that, after [0310] they had carried it about [05437], the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068] was against the city [05892] with a very [03966] great [01419] destruction [04103]: and he smote [05221] the men [0582] of the city [05892], both small [06996] and great [01419], and they had emerods [02914] [06076] in their secret parts [08368].
10 Therefore they sent [07971] the ark [0727] of God [0430] to Ekron [06138]. And it came to pass, as the ark [0727] of God [0430] came [0935] to Ekron [06138], that the Ekronites [06139] cried out [02199], saying [0559], They have brought about [05437] the ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478] to us, to slay [04191] us and our people [05971].
11 So they sent [07971] and gathered together [0622] all the lords [05633] of the Philistines [06430], and said [0559], Send away [07971] the ark [0727] of the God [0430] of Israel [03478], and let it go again [07725] to his own place [04725], that it slay [04191] us not, and our people [05971]: for there was a deadly [04194] destruction [04103] throughout all the city [05892]; the hand [03027] of God [0430] was very [03966] heavy [03513] there.
12 And the men [0582] that died [04191] not were smitten [05221] with the emerods [02914] [06076]: and the cry [07775] of the city [05892] went up [05927] to heaven [08064].
66 And he smote [05221] his enemies [06862] in the hinder parts [0268]: he put [05414] them to a perpetual [05769] reproach [02781].
6 But the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068] was heavy [03513] upon them of Ashdod [0796], and he destroyed [08074] them, and smote [05221] them with emerods [02914] [06076], even Ashdod [0795] and the coasts [01366] thereof.
66 And he smote [05221] his enemies [06862] in the hinder parts [0268]: he put [05414] them to a perpetual [05769] reproach [02781].
20 As a dream [02472] when one awaketh [06974]; so, O Lord [0136], when thou awakest [05782], thou shalt despise [0959] their image [06754].
24 Wherefore hidest [05641] thou thy face [06440], and forgettest [07911] our affliction [06040] and our oppression [03906]?
65 Then the Lord [0136] awaked [03364] as one out of sleep [03463], and like a mighty man [01368] that shouteth [07442] by reason of wine [03196].
8 Their widows [0490] are increased [06105] to me above the sand [02344] of the seas [03220]: I have brought [0935] upon them against the mother [0517] of the young men [0970] a spoiler [07703] at noonday [06672]: I have caused him to fall [05307] upon it suddenly [06597], and terrors [0928] upon the city [05892].
19 And it came to pass, while Saul [07586] talked [01696] unto the priest [03548], that the noise [01995] that was in the host [04264] of the Philistines [06430] went [03212] on [01980] and increased [07227]: and Saul [07586] said [0559] unto the priest [03548], Withdraw [0622] thine hand [03027].
20 And Saul [07586] and all the people [05971] that were with him assembled [02199] themselves, and they came [0935] to the battle [04421]: and, behold, every man's [0376] sword [02719] was against his fellow [07453], and there was a very [03966] great [01419] discomfiture [04103].
21 Moreover the Hebrews [05680] that were with the Philistines [06430] before [0865] that time [08032], which went up [05927] with them into the camp [04264] from the country round about [05439], even they also turned to be with the Israelites [03478] that were with Saul [07586] and Jonathan [03129].
22 Likewise all the men [0376] of Israel [03478] which had hid [02244] themselves in mount [02022] Ephraim [0669], when they heard [08085] that the Philistines [06430] fled [05127], even they also followed hard [01692] after [0310] them in the battle [04421].
2 And Sarah [08283] died [04191] in Kirjatharba [07153]; the same is Hebron [02275] in the land [0776] of Canaan [03667]: and Abraham [085] came [0935] to mourn [05594] for Sarah [08283], and to weep [01058] for her.
15 Those that remain [08300] of him shall be buried [06912] in death [04194]: and his widows [0490] shall not weep [01058].
19 And he smote [05221] the men [0376] of Bethshemesh [01053], because they had looked [07200] into the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], even he smote [05221] of the people [05971] fifty [02572] thousand [0505] and threescore and ten [07657] men [0582]: and the people [05971] lamented [056], because the LORD [03068] had smitten [05221] many of the people [05971] with a great [01419] slaughter [04347].
28 For there is a fire [0784] gone out [03318] of Heshbon [02809], a flame [03852] from the city [07151] of Sihon [05511]: it hath consumed [0398] Ar [06144] of Moab [04124], and the lords of the high places [01181] of Arnon [0769].
63 The fire [0784] consumed [0398] their young men [0970]; and their maidens [01330] were not given to marriage [01984].
21 And she named [07121] the child [05288] Ichabod [0350], saying [0559], The glory [03519] is departed [01540] from Israel [03478]: because [0413] the ark [0727] of God [0430] was taken [03947], and because of her father in law [02524] and her husband [0376].
8 Arise [06965], O LORD [03068], into thy rest [04496]; thou, and the ark [0727] of thy strength [05797].
61 And delivered [05414] his strength [05797] into captivity [07628], and his glory [08597] into the enemy's [06862] hand [03027].
19 Notwithstanding [0389], if the land [0776] of your possession [0272] be unclean [02931], then pass ye over [05674] unto the land [0776] of the possession [0272] of the LORD [03068], wherein the LORD'S [03068] tabernacle [04908] dwelleth [07931], and take possession [0270] among [08432] us: but rebel [04775] not against the LORD [03068], nor [0408] rebel [04775] against us, in building [01129] you an altar [04196] beside [01107] the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] our God [0430].
16 And he shall make an atonement [03722] for the holy [06944] place, because of the uncleanness [02932] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and because of their transgressions [06588] in all their sins [02403]: and so shall he do [06213] for the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], that remaineth [07931] among them in the midst [08432] of their uncleanness [02932].
1 And the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] assembled together [06950] at Shiloh [07887], and set up [07931] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] there. And the land [0776] was subdued [03533] before [06440] them.
2 And it came to pass, while [03117] the ark [0727] abode [03427] in Kirjathjearim [07157], that the time [03117] was long [07235]; for it was twenty [06242] years [08141]: and all the house [01004] of Israel [03478] lamented [05091] after [0310] the LORD [03068].
12 But go [03212] ye now unto my place [04725] which was in Shiloh [07887], where I set [07931] my name [08034] at the first [07223], and see [07200] what I did [06213] to it for [06440] the wickedness [07451] of my people [05971] Israel [03478].
13 And now, because ye have done [06213] all these works [04639], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], and I spake [01696] unto you, rising up early [07925] and speaking [01696], but ye heard [08085] not; and I called [07121] you, but ye answered [06030] not;
14 Therefore will I do [06213] unto this house [01004], which is called [07121] by my name [08034], wherein ye trust [0982], and unto the place [04725] which I gave [05414] to you and to your fathers [01], as I have done [06213] to Shiloh [07887].
15 And I will cast you out [07993] of my sight [06440], as I have cast out [07993] all your brethren [0251], even the whole seed [02233] of Ephraim [0669].
30 And the children [01121] of Dan [01835] set up [06965] the graven image [06459]: and Jonathan [03083], the son [01121] of Gershom [01647], the son [01121] of Manasseh [04519], he and his sons [01121] were priests [03548] to the tribe [07626] of Dan [01839] until the day [03117] of the captivity [01540] of the land [0776].
1 Now there was a certain [0259] man [0376] of Ramathaimzophim [07436], of mount [02022] Ephraim [0669], and his name [08034] was Elkanah [0511], the son [01121] of Jeroham [03395], the son [01121] of Elihu [0453], the son [01121] of Tohu [08459], the son [01121] of Zuph [06689], an Ephrathite [0673]:
1 And the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] assembled together [06950] at Shiloh [07887], and set up [07931] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] there. And the land [0776] was subdued [03533] before [06440] them.
4 And the king [04428] went [03212] to Gibeon [01391] to sacrifice [02076] there; for that [01931] was the great [01419] high place [01116]: a thousand [0505] burnt offerings [05930] did Solomon [08010] offer [05927] upon that altar [04196].
68 But chose [0977] the tribe [07626] of Judah [03063], the mount [02022] Zion [06726] which he loved [0157].
67 Moreover he refused [03988] the tabernacle [0168] of Joseph [03130], and chose [0977] not the tribe [07626] of Ephraim [0669]:
61 And delivered [05414] his strength [05797] into captivity [07628], and his glory [08597] into the enemy's [06862] hand [03027].
1 Then Solomon [08010] assembled [06950] the elders [02205] of Israel [03478], and all the heads [07218] of the tribes [04294], the chief [05387] of the fathers [01] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], unto king [04428] Solomon [08010] in Jerusalem [03389], that they might bring up [05927] the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] out of the city [05892] of David [01732], which is Zion [06726].
1 And the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068] was in the country [07704] of the Philistines [06430] seven [07651] months [02320].
