Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
The pious, however despised of men, are distinguished in God's sight by a regard for His law. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
I am small and despised - The word here rendered "small" may mean "small" in respect to number - that is, "few," Mic 5:2; Isa 60:22; or in respect to age - "young," Gen 19:31; or in respect to dignity - "low;" least in rank or esteem. The language here may be applied to the church as comparatively few; to one who is young; or to one in humble life. Either of these may be a reason why one is regarded as of little consequence, or may be subject to reproach and ridicule. It is not possible to determine in which of these senses the word is used here, or in which sense it was applicable to the psalmist. The word "despised" means treated as unworthy of notice; passed by; looked upon with contempt. This might be on account of age, or poverty, or ignorance, or humble rank: or it might be simply on account of his religion, for the friends of God have been, and often are, despised simply because they are religious. The Saviour was despised by people; the apostles were; the most excellent of the earth in all ages have been. Compare Heb 11:36-38; Co1 4:13.
Yet do not I forget thy precepts - I am not ashamed of them. I am not deterred from keeping them, and from avowing my purpose to obey them, because I am despised for it. This is often one of the severest tests of religion, and to be faithful in such circumstances is one of the clearest proofs of true attachment to God. There are few things which we are less able to bear than contempt, and one of the best evidences of attachment to principle is when we adhere to what we regard as right and true, though we are despised for it by the frivolous, the worldly, the rich - by those who claim to be "wise." He who can bear contempt on account of his opinions, can usually bear anything. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
I am small and despised - And on these accounts have every thing to fear. Being small, I cannot resist; being despised, I am in danger; but even all this does not induce me to start aside, or through the fear of man to be unfaithful to thee. |
13 Being defamed [987], we intreat [3870]: we are made [1096] as [5613] the filth [4027] of the world [2889], and are the offscouring [4067] of all things [3956] unto [2193] this day [737].
36 And [1161] others [2087] had [2983] trial [3984] of cruel mockings [1701] and [2532] scourgings [3148], yea [1161], moreover [2089] of bonds [1199] and [2532] imprisonment [5438]:
37 They were stoned [3034], they were sawn asunder [4249], were tempted [3985], were slain [599] with [1722] the sword [5408] [3162]: they wandered about [4022] in [1722] sheepskins [3374] and [1722] goatskins [122] [1192]; being destitute [5302], afflicted [2346], tormented [2558];
38 (Of whom [3739] the world [2889] was [2258] not [3756] worthy [514]:) they wandered [4105] in [1722] deserts [2047], and [2532] in mountains [3735], and [2532] in dens [4693] and [2532] caves [3692] of the earth [1093].
31 And the firstborn [01067] said [0559] unto the younger [06810], Our father [01] is old [02204], and there is not a man [0376] in the earth [0776] to come in [0935] unto us after the manner [01870] of all the earth [0776]:
22 A little one [06996] shall become a thousand [0505], and a small one [06810] a strong [06099] nation [01471]: I the LORD [03068] will hasten [02363] it in his time [06256].
2 But thou, Bethlehem [01035] Ephratah [0672], though thou be little [06810] among the thousands [0505] of Judah [03063], yet out of thee shall he come forth [03318] unto me that is to be ruler [04910] in Israel [03478]; whose goings forth [04163] have been from of old [06924], from everlasting [03117] [05769].
