turned their heart--God controls men's free acts (compare Sa1 10:9). "When Saul had turned his back to go from (God's prophet) Samuel, God turned (Margin) him another heart" (see Exo 1:8, &c.). Whatever evil the wicked man plots against God's people, God holds bound even his heart, so as not to lay a single plan except what God permits. Thus Isaiah (Isa 43:17) says it was God who brought forth the army of Pharaoh to pursue Israel to their own destruction (Exo 4:21; Exo 7:3). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
He turned their heart to hate his people - God turned their heart. That is, He so ordered things that they became the enemies of his people, and made it necessary that they should be removed into another land. It is not said that God did this by his direct "power;" or that he "compelled" them to hate his people; or that he in any way interfered with their "will;" or that he regarded this "as a good" in itself; or that he "approved" of it: but this is said in accordance with the usual representations in the Bible, where God is spoken of as having all things under his control, and where it is constantly affirmed that nothing takes place without his own proper agency and government in the matter. Nothing - not even the human will - free as it is - is independent of God; and not even the worst passions of men are "outside of his plan," or independent in such a sense that he does not afford the opportunity for their development and display. Compare the notes at Isa 6:10; Isa 10:5-7, Isa 10:15.
To deal subtilly - In a fraudulent, or deceitful manner. See Exo 1:10. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Narration of the exodus out of Egypt after the plagues that went forth over that land. Psa 105:25 tells how the Egyptians became their "oppressors." It was indirectly God's work, inasmuch as He gave increasing might to His people, which excited their jealousy. The craft reached its highest pitch in the weakening of the Israelites that was aimed at by killing all the male children that were born. דּברי signifies facts, instances, as in Psa 65:4; Psa 145:5. Here, too, as in Ps 78, the miraculous judgments of the ten plagues to not stand in exactly historical order. The poet begins with the ninth, which was the most distinct self-representation of divine wrath, viz., the darkness (Exo 10:21-29): shā'lach chō'shech. The former word (שׁלח) has an orthophonic Gaja by the final syllable, which warns the reader audibly to utter the guttural of the toneless final syllable, which might here be easily slurred over. The Hiph. החשׁיך has its causative signification here, as also in Jer 13:16; the contracted mode of writing with i instead of ı̂ may be occasioned by the Waw convers. Psa 105:28 cannot be referred to the Egyptians; for the expression would be a mistaken one for the final compliance, which was wrung from them, and the interrogative way of taking it: nonne rebellarunt, is forced: the cancelling of the לא, however (lxx and Syriac), makes the thought halting. Hitzig proposes ולא שׁמרו: they observed not His words; but this, too, sounds flat and awkward when said of the Egyptians. The subject will therefore be the same as the subject of שׂמוּ; and of Moses and Aaron, in contrast to the behaviour at Mê-Merı̂bah (Num 20:24; Num 27:14; cf. Kg1 13:21, Kg1 13:26), it is said that this time they rebelled not against the words (Ker, without any ground: the word) of God, but executed the terrible commands accurately and willingly. From the ninth plague the poet in Psa 105:29 passes over to the first (Exo 7:14-25), viz., the red blood is appended to the black darkness. The second plague follows, viz., the frogs (Exo 8:1-15); Psa 105:20 looks as though it were stunted, but neither has the lxx read any ויבאו (ויעלו), Ex. 7:28. In Psa 105:31 he next briefly touches upon the fourth plague, viz., the gad-fly, ערב, lxx κυνόμυια (Exo 8:20-32, vid., on Psa 78:45), and the third (Exo 8:16-19), viz., the gnats, which are passed over in Ps 78. From the third plague the poet in Psa 105:32, Psa 105:33 takes a leap over to the seventh, viz., the hail (Ex 9:13-35). In Psa 105:32 he has Exo 9:24 before his mind, according to which masses of fire descended with the hail; and in Psa 105:33 (as in Psa 78:47) he fills in the details of Exo 9:25. The seventh plague is followed by the eighth in Psa 105:34, Psa 105:35, viz., the locust (Ex 10:1-20), to which ילק (the grasshopper) is the parallel word here, just as חסיל (the cricket) is in Psa 78:46. The expression of innumerableness is the same as in Psa 104:25. The fifth plague, viz., the pestilence, murrain (Exo 9:1-7), and the sixth, viz., שׁחין, boils (Exo 9:8-12), are left unmentioned; and the tenth plague closes, viz., the smiting of the first-born (Exo 11:1.), which Psa 105:36 expresses in the Asaphic language of Psa 78:51. Without any mention of the institution of the Passover, the tenth plague is followed by the departure with the vessels of silver and gold asked for from the Egyptians (Exo 12:35; Exo 11:2; Exo 3:22). The Egyptians were glad to get rid of the people whose detention threatened them with total destruction (Exo 12:33). The poet here draws from Isa 5:27; Isa 14:31; Isa 63:13, and Exo 15:16. The suffix of שׁבטיו refers to the chief subject of the assertion, viz., to God, according to Psa 122:4, although manifestly enough the reference to Israel is also possible (Num 24:2). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Turned - That is, suffered them, to be turned. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
He turned their heart - "Their heart was turned." So the Syriac and Arabic. After befriending the Hebrews on Joseph's account, to whom they were so deeply indebted, finding them to multiply greatly in the land, and at last to become more powerful than the Egyptians themselves, they turned their attention to the adoption of measures, in order to prevent the Hebrews from possessing themselves of the government of the whole land; they curtailed them of their privileges, and endeavored to depress them by all possible means, and by a variety of legal enactments. This appears to be the sole meaning of the phrase, "He turned their heart;" or, "their heart was turned." |
3 And I will harden [07185] Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820], and multiply [07235] my signs [0226] and my wonders [04159] in the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
21 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], When thou goest [03212] to return [07725] into Egypt [04714], see [07200] that thou do [06213] all those wonders [04159] before [06440] Pharaoh [06547], which I have put [07760] in thine hand [03027]: but I will harden [02388] his heart [03820], that he shall not let the people [05971] go [07971].
17 Which bringeth forth [03318] the chariot [07393] and horse [05483], the army [02428] and the power [05808]; they shall lie down [07901] together [03162], they shall not rise [06965]: they are extinct [01846], they are quenched [03518] as tow [06594].
8 Now there arose up [06965] a new [02319] king [04428] over Egypt [04714], which knew [03045] not Joseph [03130].
9 And it was so, that when he had turned [06437] his back [07926] to go [03212] from Samuel [08050], God [0430] gave [02015] him another [0312] heart [03820]: and all those signs [0226] came [0935] to pass that day [03117].
10 Come on [03051], let us deal wisely [02449] with them; lest they multiply [07235], and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out [07122] any war [04421], they [01931] join [03254] also unto our enemies [08130], and fight [03898] against us, and so get them up [05927] out of the land [0776].
15 Shall the axe [01631] boast [06286] itself against him that heweth [02672] therewith? or shall the saw [04883] magnify [01431] itself against him that shaketh [05130] it? as if the rod [07626] should shake [05130] itself against them that lift it up [07311], or as if the staff [04294] should lift up [07311] itself, as if it were no wood [06086].
5 O [01945] Assyrian [0804], the rod [07626] of mine anger [0639], and the staff [04294] in their hand [03027] is mine indignation [02195].
6 I will send [07971] him against an hypocritical [02611] nation [01471], and against the people [05971] of my wrath [05678] will I give him a charge [06680], to take [07997] the spoil [07998], and to take [0962] the prey [0957], and to tread them down [07760] [04823] like the mire [02563] of the streets [02351].
7 Howbeit he meaneth [01819] not so, neither doth his heart [03824] think [02803] so; but it is in his heart [03824] to destroy [08045] and cut off [03772] nations [01471] not a few [04592].
10 Make the heart [03820] of this people [05971] fat [08080], and make their ears [0241] heavy [03513], and shut [08173] their eyes [05869]; lest they see [07200] with their eyes [05869], and hear [08085] with their ears [0241], and understand [0995] with their heart [03824], and convert [07725], and be healed [07495].
2 And Balaam [01109] lifted up [05375] his eyes [05869], and he saw [07200] Israel [03478] abiding [07931] in his tents according to their tribes [07626]; and the spirit [07307] of God [0430] came upon him.
4 Whither [08033] the tribes [07626] go up [05927], the tribes [07626] of the LORD [03050], unto the testimony [05715] of Israel [03478], to give thanks [03034] unto the name [08034] of the LORD [03068].
16 Fear [0367] and dread [06343] shall fall [05307] upon them; by the greatness [01419] of thine arm [02220] they shall be as still [01826] as a stone [068]; till thy people [05971] pass over [05674], O LORD [03068], till the people [05971] pass over [05674], which [02098] thou hast purchased [07069].
13 That led [03212] them through the deep [08415], as an horse [05483] in the wilderness [04057], that they should not stumble [03782]?
31 Howl [03213], O gate [08179]; cry [02199], O city [05892]; thou, whole Palestina [06429], art dissolved [04127]: for there shall come [0935] from the north [06828] a smoke [06227], and none shall be alone [0909] in his appointed times [04151].
27 None shall be weary [05889] nor stumble [03782] among them; none shall slumber [05123] nor sleep [03462]; neither shall the girdle [0232] of their loins [02504] be loosed [06605], nor the latchet [08288] of their shoes [05275] be broken [05423]:
33 And the Egyptians [04714] were urgent [02388] upon the people [05971], that they might send [07971] them out of the land [0776] in haste [04116]; for they said [0559], We be all dead [04191] men.
22 But every woman [0802] shall borrow [07592] of her neighbour [07934], and of her that sojourneth [01481] in her house [01004], jewels [03627] of silver [03701], and jewels [03627] of gold [02091], and raiment [08071]: and ye shall put [07760] them upon your sons [01121], and upon your daughters [01323]; and ye shall spoil [05337] the Egyptians [04714].
2 Speak [01696] now in the ears [0241] of the people [05971], and let every man [0376] borrow [07592] of his neighbour [07453], and every woman [0802] of her neighbour [07468], jewels [03627] of silver [03701], and jewels [03627] of gold [02091].
35 And the children [01121] of Israel [03478] did [06213] according to the word [01697] of Moses [04872]; and they borrowed [07592] of the Egyptians [04714] jewels [03627] of silver [03701], and jewels [03627] of gold [02091], and raiment [08071]:
51 And smote [05221] all the firstborn [01060] in Egypt [04714]; the chief [07225] of their strength [0202] in the tabernacles [0168] of Ham [02526]:
36 He smote [05221] also all the firstborn [01060] in their land [0776], the chief [07225] of all their strength [0202].
1 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Yet will I bring [0935] one [0259] plague [05061] more upon Pharaoh [06547], and upon Egypt [04714]; afterwards [0310] he will let you go [07971] hence: when he shall let you go [07971], he shall surely [01644] thrust you out [01644] hence altogether [03617].
8 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872] and unto Aaron [0175], Take [03947] to you handfuls [02651] [04393] of ashes [06368] of the furnace [03536], and let Moses [04872] sprinkle [02236] it toward the heaven [08064] in the sight [05869] of Pharaoh [06547].
9 And it shall become small dust [080] in all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], and shall be a boil [07822] breaking forth [06524] with blains [076] upon man [0120], and upon beast [0929], throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
10 And they took [03947] ashes [06368] of the furnace [03536], and stood [05975] before [06440] Pharaoh [06547]; and Moses [04872] sprinkled [02236] it up toward heaven [08064]; and it became a boil [07822] breaking forth [06524] with blains [076] upon man [0120], and upon beast [0929].
11 And the magicians [02748] could [03201] not stand [05975] before [06440] Moses [04872] because [06440] of the boils [07822]; for the boil [07822] was upon the magicians [02748], and upon all the Egyptians [04714].
12 And the LORD [03068] hardened [02388] the heart [03820] of Pharaoh [06547], and he hearkened [08085] not unto them; as the LORD [03068] had spoken [01696] unto Moses [04872].
1 Then the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Go [0935] in unto Pharaoh [06547], and tell [01696] him, Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] God [0430] of the Hebrews [05680], Let my people [05971] go [07971], that they may serve [05647] me.
2 For if thou refuse [03986] to let them go [07971], and wilt hold [02388] them still,
3 Behold, the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068] is [01961] upon thy cattle [04735] which is in the field [07704], upon the horses [05483], upon the asses [02543], upon the camels [01581], upon the oxen [01241], and upon the sheep [06629]: there shall be a very [03966] grievous [03515] murrain [01698].
4 And the LORD [03068] shall sever [06395] between the cattle [04735] of Israel [03478] and the cattle [04735] of Egypt [04714]: and there shall nothing [01697] die [04191] of all that is the children's [01121] of Israel [03478].
5 And the LORD [03068] appointed [07760] a set time [04150], saying [0559], To morrow [04279] the LORD [03068] shall do [06213] this thing [01697] in the land [0776].
6 And the LORD [03068] did [06213] that thing [01697] on the morrow [04283], and all the cattle [04735] of Egypt [04714] died [04191]: but of the cattle [04735] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] died [04191] not one [0259].
7 And Pharaoh [06547] sent [07971], and, behold, there was not one [0259] of the cattle [04735] of the Israelites [03478] dead [04191]. And the heart [03820] of Pharaoh [06547] was hardened [03513], and he did not let the people [05971] go [07971].
25 So is this great [01419] and wide [07342] [03027] sea [03220], wherein are things creeping [07431] innumerable [04557], both small [06996] and great [01419] beasts [02416].
46 He gave [05414] also their increase [02981] unto the caterpiller [02625], and their labour [03018] unto the locust [0697].
35 And did eat up [0398] all the herbs [06212] in their land [0776], and devoured [0398] the fruit [06529] of their ground [0127].
34 He spake [0559], and the locusts [0697] came [0935], and caterpillers [03218], and that without number [04557],
25 And the hail [01259] smote [05221] throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] all that was in the field [07704], both man [0120] and beast [0929]; and the hail [01259] smote [05221] every herb [06212] of the field [07704], and brake [07665] every tree [06086] of the field [07704].
47 He destroyed [02026] their vines [01612] with hail [01259], and their sycomore trees [08256] with frost [02602].
33 He smote [05221] their vines [01612] also and their fig trees [08384]; and brake [07665] the trees [06086] of their coasts [01366].
24 So there was hail [01259], and fire [0784] [03947] mingled [08432] with the hail [01259], very [03966] grievous [03515], such as there was none [03808] like it in all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] since it became a nation [01471].
32 He gave [05414] them hail [01259] for rain [01653], and flaming [03852] fire [0784] in their land [0776].
33 He smote [05221] their vines [01612] also and their fig trees [08384]; and brake [07665] the trees [06086] of their coasts [01366].
32 He gave [05414] them hail [01259] for rain [01653], and flaming [03852] fire [0784] in their land [0776].
16 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Say [0559] unto Aaron [0175], Stretch out [05186] thy rod [04294], and smite [05221] the dust [06083] of the land [0776], that it may become lice [03654] throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
17 And they did [06213] so; for Aaron [0175] stretched out [05186] his hand [03027] with his rod [04294], and smote [05221] the dust [06083] of the earth [0776], and it became lice [03654] in man [0120], and in beast [0929]; all the dust [06083] of the land [0776] became lice [03654] throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
18 And the magicians [02748] did [06213] so with their enchantments [03909] to bring forth [03318] lice [03654], but they could [03201] not: so there were lice [03654] upon man [0120], and upon beast [0929].
19 Then the magicians [02748] said [0559] unto Pharaoh [06547], This is the finger [0676] of God [0430]: and Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820] was hardened [02388], and he hearkened [08085] not unto them; as the LORD [03068] had said [01696].
45 He sent [07971] divers sorts of flies [06157] among them, which devoured [0398] them; and frogs [06854], which destroyed [07843] them.
20 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Rise up early [07925] in the morning [01242], and stand [03320] before [06440] Pharaoh [06547]; lo, he cometh forth [03318] to the water [04325]; and say [0559] unto him, Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Let my people [05971] go [07971], that they may serve [05647] me.
21 Else, if thou wilt not let my people [05971] go [07971], behold, I will send [07971] swarms [06157] of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants [05650], and upon thy people [05971], and into thy houses [01004]: and the houses [01004] of the Egyptians [04714] shall be full [04390] of swarms [06157] of flies, and also the ground [0127] whereon they are.
22 And I will sever [06395] in that day [03117] the land [0776] of Goshen [01657], in which my people [05971] dwell [05975], that no [01115] swarms [06157] of flies shall be [01961] there; to the end [04616] thou mayest know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068] in the midst [07130] of the earth [0776].
23 And I will put [07760] a division [06304] between my people [05971] and thy people [05971]: to morrow [04279] shall this sign [0226] be.
24 And the LORD [03068] did [06213] so; and there came [0935] a grievous [03515] swarm [06157] of flies into the house [01004] of Pharaoh [06547], and into his servants [05650]' houses [01004], and into all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714]: the land [0776] was corrupted [07843] by reason [06440] of the swarm [06157] of flies.
25 And Pharaoh [06547] called [07121] for [0413] Moses [04872] and for Aaron [0175], and said [0559], Go [03212] ye, sacrifice [02076] to your God [0430] in the land [0776].
26 And Moses [04872] said [0559], It is not meet [03559] so to do [06213]; for [02005] we shall sacrifice [02076] the abomination [08441] of the Egyptians [04714] to the LORD [03068] our God [0430]: lo, shall we sacrifice [02076] the abomination [08441] of the Egyptians [04714] before their eyes [05869], and will they not stone [05619] us?
27 We will go [03212] three [07969] days [03117]' journey [01870] into the wilderness [04057], and sacrifice [02076] to the LORD [03068] our God [0430], as he shall command [0559] us.
28 And Pharaoh [06547] said [0559], I will let you go [07971], that ye may sacrifice [02076] to the LORD [03068] your God [0430] in the wilderness [04057]; only ye shall not go [03212] very [07368] far away [07368]: intreat [06279] for me [01157].
29 And Moses [04872] said [0559], Behold, I go out [03318] from thee, and I will intreat [06279] the LORD [03068] that the swarms [06157] of flies may depart [05493] from Pharaoh [06547], from his servants [05650], and from his people [05971], to morrow [04279]: but [07535] let not Pharaoh [06547] deal deceitfully [02048] any more [03254] in not [01115] letting the people [05971] go [07971] to sacrifice [02076] to the LORD [03068].
30 And Moses [04872] went out [03318] from Pharaoh [06547], and intreated [06279] the LORD [03068].
31 And the LORD [03068] did [06213] according to the word [01697] of Moses [04872]; and he removed [05493] the swarms [06157] of flies from Pharaoh [06547], from his servants [05650], and from his people [05971]; there remained [07604] not one [0259].
32 And Pharaoh [06547] hardened [03513] his heart [03820] at this time [06471] also, neither would he let the people [05971] go [07971].
31 He spake [0559], and there came [0935] divers sorts of flies [06157], and lice [03654] in all their coasts [01366].
20 The king [04428] sent [07971] and loosed [05425] him; even the ruler [04910] of the people [05971], and let him go free [06605].
1 And the LORD [03068] spake [0559] unto Moses [04872], Go [0935] unto Pharaoh [06547], and say [0559] unto him, Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Let my people [05971] go [07971], that they may serve [05647] me.
2 And if thou refuse [03986] to let them go [07971], behold, I will smite [05062] all thy borders [01366] with frogs [06854]:
3 And the river [02975] shall bring forth [08317] frogs [06854] abundantly [08317], which shall go up [05927] and come [0935] into thine house [01004], and into thy bedchamber [02315] [04904], and upon thy bed [04296], and into the house [01004] of thy servants [05650], and upon thy people [05971], and into thine ovens [08574], and into thy kneadingtroughs [04863]:
4 And the frogs [06854] shall come up [05927] both on thee, and upon thy people [05971], and upon all thy servants [05650].
5 And the LORD [03068] spake [0559] unto Moses [04872], Say [0559] unto Aaron [0175], Stretch forth [05186] thine hand [03027] with thy rod [04294] over the streams [05104], over the rivers [02975], and over the ponds [098], and cause frogs [06854] to come up [05927] upon the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
6 And Aaron [0175] stretched out [05186] his hand [03027] over the waters [04325] of Egypt [04714]; and the frogs [06854] came up [05927], and covered [03680] the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
7 And the magicians [02748] did [06213] so with their enchantments [03909], and brought up [05927] frogs [06854] upon the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
8 Then Pharaoh [06547] called [07121] for Moses [04872] and Aaron [0175], and said [0559], Intreat [06279] the LORD [03068], that he may take away [05493] the frogs [06854] from me, and from my people [05971]; and I will let the people [05971] go [07971], that they may do sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068].
9 And Moses [04872] said [0559] unto Pharaoh [06547], Glory [06286] over me: when [04970] shall I intreat [06279] for thee, and for thy servants [05650], and for thy people [05971], to destroy [03772] the frogs [06854] from thee and thy houses [01004], that they may remain [07604] in the river [02975] only?
10 And he said [0559], To morrow [04279]. And he said [0559], Be it according to thy word [01697]: that thou mayest know [03045] that there is none like unto the LORD [03068] our God [0430].
11 And the frogs [06854] shall depart [05493] from thee, and from thy houses [01004], and from thy servants [05650], and from thy people [05971]; they shall remain [07604] in the river [02975] only.
12 And Moses [04872] and Aaron [0175] went out [03318] from Pharaoh [06547]: and Moses [04872] cried [06817] unto the LORD [03068] because of [01697] the frogs [06854] which he had brought [07760] against Pharaoh [06547].
13 And the LORD [03068] did [06213] according to the word [01697] of Moses [04872]; and the frogs [06854] died [04191] out of the houses [01004], out of the villages [02691], and out of the fields [07704].
14 And they gathered them together [06651] upon heaps [02563]: and the land [0776] stank [0887].
15 But when Pharaoh [06547] saw [07200] that there was respite [07309], he hardened [03513] his heart [03820], and hearkened [08085] not unto them; as the LORD [03068] had said [01696].
14 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820] is hardened [03515], he refuseth [03985] to let the people [05971] go [07971].
15 Get [03212] thee unto Pharaoh [06547] in the morning [01242]; lo, he goeth out [03318] unto the water [04325]; and thou shalt stand [05324] by the river's [02975] brink [08193] against he come [07125]; and the rod [04294] which was turned [02015] to a serpent [05175] shalt thou take [03947] in thine hand [03027].
16 And thou shalt say [0559] unto him, The LORD [03068] God [0430] of the Hebrews [05680] hath sent [07971] me unto thee, saying [0559], Let my people [05971] go [07971], that they may serve [05647] me in the wilderness [04057]: and, behold, hitherto [03541] thou wouldest not hear [08085].
17 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], In this thou shalt know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068]: behold, I will smite [05221] with the rod [04294] that is in mine hand [03027] upon the waters [04325] which are in the river [02975], and they shall be turned [02015] to blood [01818].
18 And the fish [01710] that is in the river [02975] shall die [04191], and the river [02975] shall stink [0887]; and the Egyptians [04714] shall lothe [03811] to drink [08354] of the water [04325] of the river [02975].
19 And the LORD [03068] spake [0559] unto Moses [04872], Say [0559] unto Aaron [0175], Take [03947] thy rod [04294], and stretch out [05186] thine hand [03027] upon the waters [04325] of Egypt [04714], upon their streams [05104], upon their rivers [02975], and upon their ponds [098], and upon all their pools [04723] of water [04325], that they may become blood [01818]; and that there may be blood [01818] throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], both in vessels of wood [06086], and in vessels of stone [068].
20 And Moses [04872] and Aaron [0175] did [06213] so, as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680]; and he lifted up [07311] the rod [04294], and smote [05221] the waters [04325] that were in the river [02975], in the sight [05869] of Pharaoh [06547], and in the sight [05869] of his servants [05650]; and all the waters [04325] that were in the river [02975] were turned [02015] to blood [01818].
21 And the fish [01710] that was in the river [02975] died [04191]; and the river [02975] stank [0887], and the Egyptians [04714] could [03201] not drink [08354] of the water [04325] of the river [02975]; and there was blood [01818] throughout all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
22 And the magicians [02748] of Egypt [04714] did [06213] so with their enchantments [03909]: and Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820] was hardened [02388], neither did he hearken [08085] unto them; as the LORD [03068] had said [01696].
23 And Pharaoh [06547] turned [06437] and went [0935] into his house [01004], neither did he set [07896] his heart [03820] to this [02063] also.
24 And all the Egyptians [04714] digged [02658] round about [05439] the river [02975] for water [04325] to drink [08354]; for they could [03201] not drink [08354] of the water [04325] of the river [02975].
25 And seven [07651] days [03117] were fulfilled [04390], after [0310] that the LORD [03068] had smitten [05221] the river [02975].
29 He turned [02015] their waters [04325] into blood [01818], and slew [04191] their fish [01710].
26 And when the prophet [05030] that brought him back [07725] from the way [01870] heard [08085] thereof, he said [0559], It is the man [0376] of God [0430], who was disobedient [04784] unto the word [06310] of the LORD [03068]: therefore the LORD [03068] hath delivered [05414] him unto the lion [0738], which hath torn [07665] him, and slain [04191] him, according to the word [01697] of the LORD [03068], which he spake [01696] unto him.
21 And he cried [07121] unto the man [0376] of God [0430] that came [0935] from Judah [03063], saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Forasmuch as [03282] thou hast disobeyed [04784] the mouth [06310] of the LORD [03068], and hast not kept [08104] the commandment [04687] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] commanded [06680] thee,
14 For ye rebelled [04784] against my commandment [06310] in the desert [04057] of Zin [06790], in the strife [04808] of the congregation [05712], to sanctify [06942] me at the water [04325] before their eyes [05869]: that is the water [04325] of Meribah [04809] in Kadesh [06946] in the wilderness [04057] of Zin [06790].
24 Aaron [0175] shall be gathered [0622] unto his people [05971]: for he shall not enter [0935] into the land [0776] which I have given [05414] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], because ye rebelled against [04784] my word [06310] at the water [04325] of Meribah [04809].
28 He sent [07971] darkness [02822], and made it dark [02821]; and they rebelled [04784] not against his word [01697].
16 Give [05414] glory [03519] to the LORD [03068] your God [0430], before he cause darkness [02821], and before your feet [07272] stumble [05062] upon the dark [05399] mountains [02022], and, while ye look [06960] for light [0216], he turn [07760] it into the shadow of death [06757], and make [07896] [07896] it gross darkness [06205].
21 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], Stretch out [05186] thine hand [03027] toward heaven [08064], that there may be darkness [02822] over the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], even darkness [02822] which may be felt [04959].
22 And Moses [04872] stretched forth [05186] his hand [03027] toward heaven [08064]; and there was a thick [0653] darkness [02822] in all the land [0776] of Egypt [04714] three [07969] days [03117]:
23 They saw [07200] not one [0376] another [0251], neither rose [06965] any [0376] from his place for three [07969] days [03117]: but all the children [01121] of Israel [03478] had light [0216] in their dwellings [04186].
24 And Pharaoh [06547] called [07121] unto Moses [04872], and said [0559], Go [03212] ye, serve [05647] the LORD [03068]; only let your flocks [06629] and your herds [01241] be stayed [03322]: let your little ones [02945] also go [03212] with you.
25 And Moses [04872] said [0559], Thou must give [05414] us [03027] also sacrifices [02077] and burnt offerings [05930], that we may sacrifice [06213] unto the LORD [03068] our God [0430].
26 Our cattle [04735] also shall go [03212] with us; there shall not an hoof [06541] be left behind [07604]; for thereof must we take [03947] to serve [05647] the LORD [03068] our God [0430]; and we know [03045] not with what we must serve [05647] the LORD [03068], until we come [0935] thither.
27 But the LORD [03068] hardened [02388] Pharaoh's [06547] heart [03820], and he would [014] not let them go [07971].
28 And Pharaoh [06547] said [0559] unto him, Get [03212] thee from me, take heed [08104] to thyself, see [07200] my face [06440] no more [03254]; for in that day [03117] thou seest [07200] my face [06440] thou shalt die [04191].
29 And Moses [04872] said [0559], Thou hast spoken [01696] well [03651], I will see [07200] thy face [06440] again [03254] no more.
5 I will speak [07878] of the glorious [03519] honour [01926] of thy majesty [01935], and of thy wondrous [06381] works [01697].
4 Blessed [0835] is the man whom thou choosest [0977], and causest to approach [07126] unto thee, that he may dwell [07931] in thy courts [02691]: we shall be satisfied [07646] with the goodness [02898] of thy house [01004], even of thy holy [06918] temple [01964].
25 He turned [02015] their heart [03820] to hate [08130] his people [05971], to deal subtilly [05230] with his servants [05650].
